Pantheon of the Stick

This is just a weird thought I had go through my mind as I was perusing some of my old comic books. One I pulled out had a storyline where the Justice League was worshipped as a pantheon of Gods. This got me thinking what it would be like in the DC universe if this was true, then I got to thinking on other comic universes such as Marvel, and eventually OotS.

So, all rambling aside, this is the project. If the Order of the Stick were a group of deities instead of adventurers, what would their respective areas of influence be? What would they be gods of (I'm pretty sure I know where Belkar will fall in this), alignments of the followers they would accept, relations with other 'gods' (Like, say, the Linear Guild, Team Evil, Celia, Miko, whoever you want to include), domains granted to their clerics, etc.


Personally I'd like to start off with Roy, as he's the one I see as ending up head of the Pantheon and a patron god of Fighters. His followers would be primarily Lawful Good of course, but I can see him accepting any Non-evil. Domains would be Law, Good, Courage, Strength, Planning, and Knowledge. Favored weapon of his clerics/paladins would of course be the Greatsword.
He has mostly good relations with other non-evil gods in his pantheon, but is frequently exasperated by the disorganized pantheon he's supposedly in charge of.
Married to Celia and, unlike some other gods who are in charge of their pantheon (*cough, Zeus, cough*), does not cheat on her.
Has a major rivalry with the pantheon's biggest evil deity Xykon. Also has a one-sided (Roy does not consider it a true rivalry) rivalry with Miko, who does not accept him as leader of the pantheon. Miko is also the one law/good-aligned deity in his pantheon he does not get along with at all, mostly due to her extreme views.

Anyone else want to give this a shot?

I'd be interested in constructing my own idea of the pantheon (will do later, have stuff to do now) but I'd like to say that I find it hilarious that everyone is casting Lien as Goddess of the Sea. It fits her perfectly, but it's hilarious to me because the name of the Goddess of Water/Happiness/Creation in the pantheon of my own story is Leena. Coincidence? Probably.

I'm working on a comprehensive list of the PotS deities including alignment, possible domains and some personality and relationship bits. I will be giving credit to those of you who posted anything I used when writing this, you have all been quite helpful.

We don't all have the time to write the LONG essay that would be needed to cover all those characters. Hell you can notice that OP only went into detail with nothing more than couple of characters. Frankly, listing out the respective domains of the cast makes the way for a good starting point... If someone wants to go into detail they are free to do so

I'm not insulted. I'm typically very hard to insult, especially when I have the internet between me and the other person. I do, however, sometimes have trouble conveying my emotions properly, so I can come across as either insulted or insulting when I don't mean to.

You're thinking, making fairly intelligent observations, and expressing your opinion.

Yeah, alot of this is people listing alignment and a fair amount of listing potential God titles as well, with very little of the rest. However, I find that what is being posted is enough to jump start my creative juices and flesh them out myself. I probably won't bother with the whole cast like other people are doing, but I am definitely going to be writing up a significant portion of the more memorable characters.

I don't want to just add to the random alignment guessing, but I have to wonder why people consider Thog to be evil. Chaotic, sure, but why evil? I think he would at least be neutral, especially since he *helped* Elan at one point, and didn't turn his back on him after that. I mean, if he were truly evil, he would have (at least attempted) killed Elan as soon as he found Nale.

Enjoying it isn't so much the issue- killing people without reasonable justification is. Nale and Thog are arrested on 417 counts of murder in Cliffport- that's a lot of people killed.

It's not unheard of for a hero to enjoy battling, and even to enjoy killing, their enemies- but they usually show a lot more discrimination than Nale & Thog did.

Haley Starshine - Goddess of Freedom, Stealth, Trickery and Wealth
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Description: Haley Starshine is primarily a patron of rogues, but occasionally receives veneration from bards, druids and other adventuring types whose ideals line up with her own. These ideals include helping those in need, preventing the suffering of innocents and loyalty to friends and comrades. They do not, however, include overt charity, trust or reliance in strangers or a sigma against greed, which placed her slightly closer to Neutral than some of the other Good gods in her pantheon.
Primary domains: Luck, Trickery and Liberation. Other possible domains: Chaos, Travel.

Elan the Bard - God of Art, Dance, Festivals, Forgiveness, Music and Song.
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Description: Elan the Bard is perhaps the most carefree and adventurous deity of the Pantheon of the Stick, and as such, lacks a true following that many deities possess. He may receive casual worship from many places, but due to his nature, he very rarely gains devoted followers. He sees life as one great story, and encourages those who do follow him to go out and play their part instead of remaining in a church or temple.
Primary domains: Charm, Glory, Travel. Other possible domains: Chaos, Good.

Vaarsuvius - God(dess?) of Androgynism, Magic, Scholarship, Secrets and Writing.

Description: Patron of the arcane arts, little is known about the mysterious Vaarsuvius other than his fondness for magic, study and especially long-winded speeches. Wizards and some adepts revere him, though he draws less attention from bards, sorcerers and other casters to who their magic comes naturally.
Primary domains: Knowledge, Magic, Rune.

You're doing it wrong. You don't figure out what domain each character has. You figure out which character fits in which domain.

First the planar rulers:

Earth: Shojo/Girard
Underworld: Xyklon

Roy currently rules the Heavens and is the one the common people look up too. Xyklon is the opposite. Rift guardians share the domain of the earth. Shojo was one of the rulers of the land but was killed.

This makes the OotS and those who directly wish to delay Xylkon's access to the Snarl/Rifts the Heavenly aspect. Team Evil would be the villiainous Underworld group and Non-Oots as the lesser concept deities.

Thog: Choatic Evil god of cute fluffy things and sweet deserts

Thog originally rose to power as a God of destruction and Chaos, but Thog soon decided that he wanted to have dominion over puppies and ice cream. The gods of good thought that this was an advantageous event; they had thought by allowing Thog this dominion it would make him a less threatening god; one less evil god for the gods of good to worry about. This worked to a certain extent in that Thog did not attract that many powerful followers (clerics, paladins, nobles); those who choose religion tend to believe their are more important things to worry about. However, there was an unexpected side effect... Thog's position actually made him a favorite amongst children, and he also attracted a great deal of sympathy for the evil gods..

This fact was made even worse because of gods such a Miko, the Lawful Good Goddess of Judgement, often served to make the gods of good appear strict and wrathful. As such many believe that fate had brought forth Miko and Thog to act as a sort of additional balancing element between the gods of good and evil.


It should also be noted that if not for the intervention of Nale, Lawful Evil God of Trickery, the world would be covered in puppies and ice cream... this only added to Nale's Infamy. One point that often baffles religious scholars is that Thog is one of the few Evil gods that is always invited to any party thrown by Elan, the God of Lore, much to the other gods of good discontent. Miko is often not invited since she tends to ruin the parties (The presence of evil gods always made this far worse).

Redcloak doesn't hate paladins... He hates everyone who isn't a goblin. He even despised hobgoblins and other goblinoids until one sacrificed himself to save Redcloak; before that point, he was liberally (and quite happily) using hobgoblins as cannon fodder, sending them on suicide missions for no reason other than he wanted to see them either suffering or dead. I think Redcloak does have a pretty strong claim to being a God of Hate.

I don't think Kazumi's defining factor should be that she happens to be pregnant as we see her. We could make Eugene and Sara Greenhilt gods of fertility and parenthood because they happened to have a child, but they have much stronger characteristics, just like the Katos.
