I typically play wizards, so I rarely have any sort of weapon at all. Recently, however, in a Tomb of Horrors game where I was playing a survivalist wizard (surprise), I managed to convince the DM to let me use a custom weapon.

This weapon was a normal quarterstaff with a peculiar magical effect: whenever someone used detect magic and tried to scan the staff, it showed up as not a staff, but a Great Wyrm Gold Dragon. It cost my wizard about 75 gp, though it may have been a good idea to leave the item for use in a campaign where characters recurred from one session to the next.
