Trouble Running Hearts of Iron 2

I've been trying to run this game on my laptop (see spoiler for system specs) and every time I run the game, it gives me an error message saying it failed to initialize the video.

I've tried patching it, disabling the intro video, running it in compatibility modes, everything I can think of.

Please help me! I want to play this game *sob*.

HOI 2 System Requirements
PC: Pentium III with 800 MHz, 128 MB RAM, 1 GB of free hard drive space, 4 MB DirectX-compatible video card, DirectX-compatible sound card.

Laptop System Specs
Intel Atom 1.60GHz, 1 GB RAM, lots of space, my cards can handle newer games, so they are not the issue.

Sounds like you're trying it on a Netbook. If it's one of the newer ones, it may be an issue with Windows 7. If it's one of the XP ones, it may be an issue with the fact that the on board GPU doesn't support certain aspects of DX9, i.e. hardware T&L.

Then again, a brief search on the interweb tubes indicates that people can play it on netbooks so likely there are workarounds.
