I was driving through paris (were i live) and noticed a gas station labeled ELAN, its seems this was the name of the company but i have never really noticed their stations in france before, or maybe i have i just hadnt been reeding OoTS yet :smallannoyed:
is anybody else aware of this ELAN gas company and could anybody give me some more info about it?

I highly doubt Rich has given someone the rights to build oots-related gas stations*, so the name is just a coincidence. Therefore, this has nothing to do with oots and shouldn't be in this forum.

*Although that would be awesome.

So... what's your point?

Well, as seen by recent strips, Elan likes dinosaurs a lot and petroleum comes from the remnants of dinosaurs millions of years old. It makes sense using Elan logic.

Maybe this means there's an alternative fuel company named Nale.

It would have to be a solar lunar electric company.
That goes to the Moon to get the energy just to make it more complicated.

It's not that rare a word, you know, as has been said above. I could probably think of half a dozen things with that name if I spent some time. There was at least some hair product with that name.

You mean unnecessary complications? No, that would be the NALE gas company:smallsmile:

You mean...

"Mwahahah! No one will be expecting that I'm digging for fossil fuel on Venus!"?

That be the the point, my friend.
Also the bill is written in Backwards French and must be paid in Eastern Caribbean Dollars to prevent forgery.

So who would the other character match up to? Is Roy Texaco? Is Belkar OOTS's ExxonMobil? It just doesn't make much sense. Obviously, Xykon was intended as a stand-in for BP, but other than that I'm drawing a blank.

Additionally, by writing the bill in encrypted ancient Sumerian you receive a 9.9198% discount.

Maybe Rich saw the coincidence and decided to go with it. You know, one of those, 'story's that write themselves' kinda things.
He probably got Elan's name from somewhere else, and when he heard or read about the gas company (He seems very well read) he just decided it was too good of a subtle gag to leave alone.
Or something.
I dunno.

You mean Rich decided to implant a really, really obscure and unfunny joke about a French gas company that 99% of his readership would never encounter? I'm not really seeing it myself...

It so happens that "Elan" is a very suitable name for someone like Elan:smallannoyed:

The man is a writer. He is highly proficient with language. If Rich used any outside reference to help him pick the name for Elan I wager it would be a Thesaurus or some such.

*Bows to Dr. Epic*

Fyi the theme colors of Elan gas were green white and brown (ironically the brown of elans sash)

I've seen those gas stations! They made me grin.

More hilariously, I think, there's an office somewhere in Dublin labelled "Elan - a Manpower Company".

God forbid that a company based in France would use a French word for their name.

Omg! Look at all those similarities! And Ponies! I bet all of them are intended jokes by Rich!

And also check out all the references to "V":

In all honesty: Here's simply nothing to see.

edit: Ah, the links that end with a ")" are wrong. You have to add that by hand.

Welcome at Elan (http://www.stations-elan.fr/Fr/elan.nsf/VS_OPM/E3D3BD80D3BE2973C12572F8002F30DE?OpenDocument), a Total (http://www.total.com/en/home-page-940596.html) company.

And BTW Nimrod's Son, "élan" is a French word.

Then i didn't get it, sorry.
I thought you were making irony about the many French companies which have not French name. Whether English or loosely Latinish-Greekish new words.

For those who want to know, "élan" more or less means "impulse", it can mean "dash" also.

Incidently, it can also mean "moose".
