Hello playgrounders. Due to a very unfortunate and infuriating moving mishap I lost all my minis/tokens.

One of the workers forgot the box, that I stored them in, out on the street and of course when I came back they were long gone... :smallfurious: Thankfully my WH40k ones were in their suitcase and I personally carried that...:smallsigh:

Now I am in need of tokens for the campaign I am running (and the ones I may run in the future) but I can't replace a years old collection at once (nor have a D&D combat look like Tyrranids&Dark Eldar CO). So I need your advice - and possibly some linkies :smallwink:

What tokens do you use to replace minis on the grid and where do you get them from?

Well one time we had every player in our party create his own Lego avatar that was used in combat. It was awesome because you could customize your character piece and change its arms and armor to match your actual character. For enemies we went the cheap patch and used dice. It is nice though because using die color and type you could place each die with a certain number pointing up for quick reference.

"I tumble past red d8 and attack white d6 number 2"

its so useful because my players are lazy and no one wants to get off their butts and move their pieces around, lol.

My group just uses spare dice. The players use the d12 from their sets (since they never get used otherwise) as their characters, and enemies are generally d6s since there is an overabundance of those.

Like above though, I'm trying to get legos worked in.

Edit: We also end up using cardboard squares, the plastic dice containers and their lids, and coins when we run out of dice or need something bigger.

TokenTool
Inkjet printer
Bloody/number templates from gnomestew.com (forget the acutal link)
GIMP
Glossy paper
1" washers (1/8" center) - 8/$1 at Home Depot
Glue stick
1" hole punch from Michael's

Use TokenTool to quickly create tokens from images. Import to GIMP. Add bloody to second copy. Add numbers as necessary.

Print out sheets of tokens on high quality from the printer (you can use lower, but it's not as nice). About 6 tokens (3 double-sided) works well, with 1/4"-1/2" between rows.

Punch out tokens with hole punch.

Use glue stick to apply token to washers.

They end up looking nice, being stable, and have a nice weight to them. Cost is <$10 to set up (assuming you have a printer), and probably somewhere in the vicinity of $.20/token.

I'll snap a picture of some of mine when I get home and post them.
Doing a sheet of 20 or so will probably take about an hour, 30 minutes to set up the sheet for printing, and 30 minutes to assemble afterwards.

me, on using how to use tokentool for this very end (redirect to the WotC site) (http://community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/75882/22430693/Making_bad-guy_tokens&post_num=2#390638029)

The Essentials series will have tokens, it makes the monster book (compendium?) very tempting

HDMI cable + laptop + TV + maptools application + video game sprites (fire emblem, final fantasy) = Serious win

You can even have multiple users logged into maptools so one person isn't always stuck moving around all the tokens by himself. And customizing your tokens is as easy as a few minutes in MS Paint.

Uh... this, just on a 42 inch TV with everyone comfortably seated around the room instead of crowded around the dinner table. Definitely an upgrade from our old setup. Oh! And the mouse-over display means I never have to ask "What's your Fortitude again?"

I get mine from

Dragon Fire Signs (http://www.dragonfiresigns.com/store.php?crn=206&rn=378&action=show_detail)

They are laser engraved generic monster tokens...they have varietys of different sets and if you want to get custom ones you can spend more money on them. Just for example...the set I linked is $20 and it includes:

12x Medium Tiles
6x Large
2x Huge
1x Gargantuan
1x Collosal Tile

Condition Tiles
3x flying
3x invisible
1x enlarged

1-inch white glazed ceramic tiles, as used for bathrooms and such. The surface is basically glass, so you can write on the top and edges using a dry-erase or permanent marker. We just wrote the initials of the monster on a tile, so the tile with "KS" written on it was the Kobold sorcerer.

Good for monsters because they take no time to create. Not as good for players, though they can make a nice base for a paper stand-up.

I draw OoTS style ones on Adobe Illustrator, then print them out on cardstock and stick them on bases.

Like so:

Here's a small sample - the wolf and goblins were kind of low res, but the iron defender and dwarf were a little higher res to start:

Beer bottle caps are just the right size, and the soft plastic liner on the inside takes ballpoint pen very nicely. If, for whatever reason, you happen to have several dozen beer bottle caps lying around.

Glass tokens of various colors and sizes. For elevation, we place them on D6s.

I also use a variety of models, but tokens are the general fallback for whenever I lack the appropriate quantity of appropriate models. The warhammer fantasy line certainly has a number of options for mooks as well, though.

Well one time we had every player in our party create his own Lego avatar that was used in combat.

I like this idea so much I just went out and bought This. (http://kingdoms.lego.com/en-us/Products/Default.aspx#7950) Lego catapult with 2 minifigs, 2 swords, and an axe :) Perfect for my sword/axe fighter
