Hi forum. Im sure im not the first nor the last to ask this question, so please link me to those threads if u find them :-)

Im creating a halfling sorcerer. Going for 9 levels sorc before going into argent savant. But im not very fond of keeping a familiar. Im not gonna choose spells that will augment. If there are some good alternatives out there, please point me to them. Ive checked metamagic specialist from phb 2 and it didnt excite me. Might pick it up if i decide to go blaster, not confirmed yet though.

Got any alternatives?

http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/magic/itemFamiliars.htm There's always the Item Familiar, if you're starting at 3rd level or higher.

If you're not fond of keeping a familiar, why not just take one and keep it on your person at all times? A familiar offers a nice little passive bonus to either a skill check or a saving throw. And under most circumstances, the familiar does not require any attention, maybe requiring a separate saving throw under exceptional circumstances. (But you shouldn't stand in poisonous fumes anyway.)

Additionally, a raven familiar can be used as a messenger (because it can speak), saving you a cantrip.

What Jornophelanthas said, plus Imbue Familar with Spell Ability. It's 6th level spell from Complete Arcane that allows you to give some spell slots to out familar. So, in one round, you and your familar can cast.

It's still a few evel until you will be able to pick the spell up, and you'll probably want some other 6th level spells before getting Imbue Familar with Spell Abilty. So you can always get some scrolls of the spell.

Get a white Persian cat, an eye patch, and maybe a mustache.

Talk a lot with the DM one on one. Make other PCs paranoid and have a great use for your otherwise crappy familiar...

Seriously take the raven - it gives a lot. Free spy/scout/messenger it's as good as it gets without blowing a feat on it.

If I'm reading the OP correctly it's not just that they're worried about losing the familiar, but that having a familiar doesn't fit with the concept in the first place...

See if your DM will allow this flaw from Dragon Magazine:

or this one

I think he just doesn't want it. Not that it's out of characters concept...

If you want you could find crystallkeep PDF on base classes it has variants for sorc without a familiar.

Badly phrased. I meant for the people giving advice on protecting the familiar, it didn't sound like that was the OP's primary concern.

Swap it out for a feat. It's the easy way.

Or do like V does, and have a familiar that gets ignored until the bonus becomes relevant.
