View Full Version : Dice? We Don't Need No Stinkin' Dice! [3.5]

Okay, you quirky novelty optimizers...I'm trying to put together a character who doesn't take chances as a thought exercise. I want to see if there's a way to build a character who never needs to roll a single die. Right now, I've got the following:

Changeling Rogue 1/Wizard 3/Master Specialist 2/Warblade 1/Jade Phoenix Mage 3/Exemplar 8/Jade Phoenix Mage +2

He can forego rolling the following:

Initiative: instead, he uses Aura of Perfect Order (gained as stance at JPM 5)
Attacks: instead, he uses Aura of Perfect Order or falls back on spells that don't require attack rolls. Who doesn't love Magic Missile?
Skills: Due to the Changeling Rogue substitution level and 8 levels in exemplar, if we assume 18 starting INT+1 age bonus+5 levels, we can take 10 on 20 skills
Saves: one of our skills will be Concentration, so we can use the Diamond Mind maneuvers to replace our saves with Concentration checks. Of course, we need a way to regain maneuvers.
Damage: Maximize Spell, naturally.
Caster level checks: Arcane Mastery
Stabilization checks: Tempting Fate can be used sometimes--only if the attack takes you from positive HP to dead.
Miss chance: True Strike.

What other feats/classes/gear are available to let me take 10, take 11, or forego rolls? Also, what other things will this character have to roll?

Hit points at every level, unless you DM says otherwise.

P.S. Diehard to avoid stabilization checks.

The Steady Concentration feat (Races of Stone), you can Take 10 on Concentration checks. That should bypass the need for Exemplar, assuming you're willing to forgo using other Skills.

Hmm, I rather like the use of Exemplar, as it adds to the list of skills I can take 10 on. However, I hadn't thought about Diehard.

How are you getting Aura of Perfect Order at only Warblade 1/JPM 5? It's a 6th level stance for which you need 11 initiator levels.

Forgive my ignorance, I'm not a heavy TOB user, though I like the book.

Classes that don't add to your initiator level directly give you half their level as an initiator level.

Does making other people (i.e. enemies) roll saving throws count?

Ring of Feather Fall, so you don't need to roll 20d6 for falling damage.

What about damage from your spells/attacks?

Interesting. That's good to know. Thanks. I'm usually more of a straight caster player myself, so that's good info.

No, no, that's okay. They can take all the chances they want--just not us.

Maximize Spell would be used on anything that inflicts variable damage, but of course. Now, I know it's not totally optimal...I just want to see how much we can not roll.

Some Luck rerolls would fit this well; given how few d20s you're rolling, even one or two a day mean you could pretty much reroll any low number you want.

The Clerical Pride domain is excellent if you have good saving throw modifiers, as its granted power lets you reroll any 1 on a saving throw, once per die rolled.

Ideally, your saves will be a flat number, though: they'll all be Concentration checks that you can take 10 on.

Exactly. While rerolls are always nice (trust me, my last Iron Chef entry was all about them), I want to be able to go through as many sessions as possible without opening my dice tin.
