I need a map of japan at the beginning of the kamakura period complete with towns, provinces, and physical features for a campaign setting I'm (almost finished with) designing. Something along the lines of the awsome Eberron map here (http://sancus.off.net/Eberron_Khorvaire_Map_1.3.pdf) would be ideal. Does anyone know how that map was made or if such a map exists for the region I'm after?

How historically accurate and detailed do you want? There weren't very accurate maps of Japan until Ino Tadataka (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ino_Tadataka)'s surveying in the late 1700s (so about 600 years post what you are looking for). That said, some of the historical maps here (http://www.davidrumsey.com/japan/) might be close enough for your purposes. I doubt any of them go back far enough to the Kamakura time period, but most major features should not have changed that much.

You can make maps of this sort using the Campaign Cartographer software from ProFantasy:

I can't help you with a specific map of Japan in that era, though. :smallfrown:

That site's pretty cool, thanks for the link. I can probably use those, if I can figure out how to save/print them.

Maybe Kamakura was too specific. What I intended was a map of the ancient provinces with major towns and topography included. I want basically this: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/76/Ancient_Japan_provinces_map_japanese.gif Combined with this http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/01/Japan_topo_en.jpg. I dont have photoshop, or I could probably use it to overlap the two, but I also need it to be fairly high-resolution so everything isnt as crowded. My google-foo has failed me thus far.

Ninja'd.

Wow, that's an awesome utility, thanks.

I wonder how long it will take me make what I want though... :smallfrown:
::edit:: I also noticed that it costs money... :smallfrown::smallfrown:

Incidentally, if anyone's interested in such a project, I could definately use some help. I cant pay anything, but I'll put your name on the cover page.

Edit: Never mind, I've got it aken care of.

You mentioned not having photoshop -- have you looked at The GIMP? It's an open source photoshop tool I use for touching stuff up after creating it with Campaign Cartographer, hehe.

FIND THEM HERE (http://www.cartographersguild.com/)

I take all my maps from them! There are some really wonderful ones mixed in!

Wow, there needs to be a "useful links for campaign-building" thread. I should have come to the playground first. Thanks a lot!
