View Full Version : Jewelery For Dudes

So, I was pondering this the other day - the only real jewelery I have is my highschool class ring. And I don't like that. I kinda wanna get a real ring, that I could just have and let it become a heirloom or whatever. But...any rings I see being sold these days are all feminine and such. Where does a guy go to get a neat ring nowadays?

On a tangentially related note, I have this big bag of uncut gemstones. Once I find a lapidary, would any jewelery store be willing to buy them or set them in stuff, do ya think?

.....Mordor?

Nowadays it's not really common, if you ask me....

Hippy shops and biker shops and stuff like that always has masculine jewellery. It's always very chunky and stuff, though, so I don't know whether it'd be to your taste.
And if you ask around, there should be some jewellers who do custom jewellery who should be fine to set your stones. I'm intending to hire one to do a fancier replacement of a necklace of my mother's that I (kicking myself) lost <.<

I don't really feel like beating up some short hairy guys on their way to a volcano just to get a ring that'll get me hunted by spectres. Thanks though. :P

There are places online that specialize in male rings, I'd bet. Most local jewelers also will size up and down rings appropriately. Resizing rings is quite possible, and assuming the ring starts somewhere close to the end size, isn't that expensive to have done.

On a tangentially related note, I have this big bag of uncut gemstones. Once I find a lapidary, would any jewelery store be willing to buy them or set them in stuff, do ya think?
Depends entirely on the jeweler in question. Ask them and see what they say. Most probably would (from my experience), but I can't exactly promise anything.

Also, on the subject of male jewelry, I really want to find a ringsmith around here that will make rings for my massive hands. :smallsigh: I've got huge hands and very thick fingers, so finding a ring that fits me is... tough, at best.

Been thinking the same thing really, I have the added problem of having "piano fingers" aka really long but rather skinny compared to most men's hands. Best damn fingers for playing a guitar but not that great when I want to wear a ring haha. Ive had a look at a few online stores but buggered if i know how size's work overseas and the like.

As for uncut gemstones most Jewelers will be more then willing to help carve a stone and set it for you but i don't believe they would buy them.

Do you have something in particular in your mind, Muncher? Does it involve jewels?

Or what makes a man's ring?

I have four jewelled silver rings that I consider masculine. (And others I do not.)

FAQ on tungsten/tungsten carbide (http://www.fiercetungsten.com/tungsten-information.html). It doesn't say it there, but yes, it is also used in electrical applications, including incandescent light bulbs. Gold, copper, silver, etc. also have electrical applications too.

P.S.
Australia = AU
AU = Gold
Therefore: Australia = Gold

Yes. Also, tungsten is crazy strong, very light, and very VERY cheap. Dad got a tungsten ring that's saved his hand from a (literal, by weight) ton of bricks before. They're nice stuff actually.

EDIT: Innis, I'd do that, but... uh... well... my foes are all alive. :smallfrown:

Do you have something in particular in your mind, Muncher? Does it involve jewels?

Or what makes a man's ring?

My ideal ring would be one with a largeish stone set in the middle, and just a plain simple band around it otherwise. Or, barring that, something badass, like a dragon or something (my mother's friend from when I was but a wee lad had a huge silver dragon ring, and it stuck with me).

And by man's ring, I mean one not specifically marketed to women. Many these days are just the bare minimum for the band, and then GEMSGEMSGEMS all over the place.

EDIT: I suppose something akin to a signet ring might be what I'm looking for, but not exactly.

Your first description can be found for certain, Muncher. The second I know not: it's a little kitschy for my tastes.

We are on the right track. (Also, the fact that that store is based in Tel-Aviv makes me slightly happy.) Square or circle shaped would be better than heart, IMO, and possibly inlaid as opposed to raised.

I think that one would be good for a pinky ring. They're doing one for me with an amethyst.

They make this (http://cgi.ebay.com/beautiful-and-massive-hand-made-genuine-Garnet-ring-/380266113359?pt=US_Fine_Rings&hash=item5889a0694f) style often, with peridots, amethysts, garnets, or moonstones; I bought one with garnets. It's a very masculine style in spite of the seven juicy jewels around it.

Just letting you know, stuff is out there if you can find a good place to look.

I know several shops that sell male rings (wearing a golden wedding ring and fun tin ring with funky waves at the moment, more than two is a show-off) and also now at least one shop that will make it for you, just give a design and your size and they'll make it. Just hop over the ocean and I'll show them to ya.

I'd used to wear necklaces a lot, seem to have dropped that with the years. No gold though, never gold!

Try going to a local privately owned jeweler. If you go to one of the chain shops, particularly those found in malls, you're going to get generic and a very limited men's selection, but if you go to a small jeweller, you're actually likely to find more of a selection, particularly if they deal with estate jewelry.

They'll also be more likely to be willing to custom make something for you. The jeweler I use here in Kansas was willing to custom make my wife's wedding and engagement rings, did a brilliant job, and didn't charge me an arm and a leg.

I caution you most gravely against this vendor. One can see these kinds for sale online only too often. Not to speak of the settings or the style, but the rings are plated base metal, and the stones are synthetic CZs at the best. I can't tell you what that green 'jade' is made of.

I hate to say it so plainly, but don't buy from China.

Because it's impossible to be accurate with a tape measure when a 1/4 size, which is a fraction of a millimetre, will make the difference between a ring fitting comfortably and not. I've tried.

Sharktooth necklaces are only awesome if you went and punched the shark in the face to obtain the tooth.
Not really, they're pretty cool all the time.

That can be organised...

On a sad note, google image search of "D&D ring" shows up several pictures of onion rings in the first page of results. :smallmad:

That strikes me as less sad and more hilarious.

Good. Go out and do it and report back to me.

Yes. This.

I disagree, I find that the plainer the band is the less interesting it is to wear. I'd rather have a ring with designs along the entire outside of the band over a set stone.

It is personal preference though

Tsk tsk tsk, Munchy, those first two are each of them desperately overpriced and the jewels are not so nice! A simulated emerald (and in silver, for three digits!)?! An unfaceted garnet of rusty hue and dubious clarity? Your ringlore is deficient!

Although I have an idea of what you like now, so if something hits my eye in my weekly sessions of jewel-drool I will send the link your way.

I must concur with this gentleman as far as my own fingers, but it seems Munchy prefers otherwise.

I'm sorry Kneen, I forgot to put ranks in Appraise! And my racial bonus does NOTHING.*

And I don't MIND designs on the sides of the ring, it's just I've already GOT one of those so I'd like something different.

* Another terrible joke made at my Jewish heritage. Don't hate. Don't you be drinkin' that Haterade, and don't you dare eat any Hatertots.

EDIT: Also, if you're drooling jewels...does that mean you're eating jewels as well? Isn't there a monster that eats gems...?

I disagree. I really like simplistic visual art and the same in jewelry. For a long time, the only jewelry I would wear was a medallion of a celtic knot on a leather cord. Now I wear no jewelry because that started to irritate my neck.

Hey Munchy. What do you think of these Jew-els?

This (http://cgi.ebay.com/ANTIQUE-STERLING-SILVER-HEMATITE-INTAGLIO-CAMEO-RING-12-/260416952035?pt=Vintage_Fine_Jewelry&hash=item3ca20f56e3) is neat, but it's a size 12. That's pretty big (there's this (http://cgi.ebay.com/ANTIQUE-STERLING-SILVER-HEMATITE-INTAGLIO-CAMEO-RING-9-/350246327909?pt=Vintage_Fine_Jewelry&hash=item518c4ed665) one as well in size 9 but the band is not as interesting).
This (http://cgi.ebay.com/ANTIQUE-SILVER-RECTANGLE-RED-TOPAZ-ART-DECO-MEN-RING-9-/350270047438?pt=Vintage_Fine_Jewelry&hash=item518db8c4ce) is neat: I'm not sure I trust the seller's description of the gem, but in spite of some small visible inclusions, if it really is a red topaz then it's at a decent price.
This (http://cgi.ebay.com/Mens-Tigers-Eye-Ring-Brushed-Silver-Size-10-/280560979071?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4152bccc7f) is kind of cool: tiger's eye is nice for masculine rings. The lustre of the stone in that ring might not be well lit for the larger photographs... or it might just be unacceptably dull.

Speaking of tiger's eye, I can't decide if I really like this (http://cgi.ebay.com/VICTORIAN-10K-GOLD-TIGERS-EYE-INDIGO-RING-SZ-7-Signd-G-/120620590546?pt=Vintage_Fine_Jewelry&hash=item1c158c25d2) or if it's super tacky.

EDIT: Also, if you're drooling jewels...does that mean you're eating jewels as well? Isn't there a monster that eats gems...?

Only pearls.

Re: Kneensy - I really like the red topaz one, and to a lesser extent the second cameo ring. Rather spifflicious.
