View Full Version : [3.5/General D&D] Equipment damaged by aoe?

I've heard stories, mostly from older editions of D&D, of character's equipment being damaged or lit on fire by attacks, spells, etc. Today, I stumbled across this note on Red Dragons from the 3.5 SRD:

"A red dragon lands to attack small, weak creatures with its claws and bite rather than obliterating them with its breath weapon, so as not to destroy any treasure they might be carrying."

Now, it also says elsewhere that instantaneous fire attacks (like, I suppose, a Fireball spell) "rarely" set a character's clothes on fire, due to how short the duration of the flames is.

Does anyone bother with checking for damage to equipment for anything other than sunder attempts? Is it just too much of a hassle? Too cruel to the players?

I think most DMs would only bother when a PC has a particularly annoying/broken piece of equipment they want to eliminate.
