Amusing hat ideas/the making of said amusing hat

So, hi guys.

Next saturday, my BF is having a Mad Hatter's Party. Thing is, I don't have a hat.

So, ideas for hats? Preferably cheap; definitely mad.

I have a small amount of sewing skills, so can probably attempt to make something from scratch. I was previously considering sewing a toy octopus to a beret, but I can find any toy octopi :(

If my experiences are anything to go by, just get a coonskin hat. Ya know, Davy Crockett style.

For crazy hat day at school, very long ago, I once took a closed shoebox, gift-wrapped it with a ribbon and everything, then cut a hole for my head on the bottom and wore it as a hat. It was fun.

Take one pillbox hat and tack on some twig wreaths large enough to fit around said pillbox until the hat is fully covered. Build the back up with twisted willow branches or ting ting and skeleton leaves. Nest some large coloured eggs in the crown of the pillbox; clip on some of those sequin bird decorations (add some extra feathers to the tails.) Have recording of some birds tweeting on your person; play at all times.

Attach a metal rod to the top a helmet. The other side of th rod is attached to the inside of a garbage can. If the rod is the right length, it should look like the garbage can is levitating over your head.

It wouldn't be too difficult to make. There are hats shaped like squids/octopi. All you need to do is get one, decapitate a doll, sow the body onto the squid, and make it look like an occult, evil creature.

I just went shopping. I managed to obtain a cow hat for free as a backup...it's pretty cool (photos later).

However, there were no octopi toys or hats.

I've decided to make my own illithid. Said party will be filled with gamers who will get it. So I figure it's a pretty cool idea.

Digging through mum's fabric stash now...if anyone has any handy hints, they'd definitely be welcome ^^

Too bad. If I had any hat crafting skills I'd make that for my family's Halloween party. Apparently its really fun and everybody goes all out with costumes. On second thought you don't mind if I steal your hat idea do you? :smallbiggrin:
