View Full Version : If you could choose any D&D class, what would you choose?

I'll go with Wizard, no sport, lots of reading in a dark room, lots of sleep (needs to regain spells) and I can shoot magic from my hands ad everyone WILL always listen to what I say, becuase I'm the Smart One

How about you?

Hmm. Let me see.

*flips lucky coin*

Apparently, I'd be a Binder. Dark deals with eldritch beings from beyond space and time? It's like I'm in the Cthulhu Mythos without the risk of death and/or dismemberment and/or absorption into an Elder God. :smallamused:

In real life? Yeah, wizard. It might not be the *best* choice, but it's damned good, and certainly the most awesome.

Something that doesn't require sleep to keep on truckin'. Something Int-based. Something stylish. Also books.

So yeah, Factotum (possibly a level in Chameleon after 8th). With a Wild Cohort. If I could take Obtain Familiar, I'd also take that. And lots of other things for more minions to fullfill roles I don't feel like fullfulling at the moment. Mainly buffers just to be cool.

...better yet, make it Factotum//Warblade. FTFW.

Wizard going into alienist, if limited to official classes.

If allowed homebrew, I'd have to go for true xenotheurge. then I'd wander around breaking reality for fun. punch a couple people from across the room, make a haunted looking forest while taking a nap.

Bard, definitely. I like being a bit of a jack-of-all-trades, and the Bard is definitely that. I also seem to have chosen the "Stealthy" feat, as there isn't a week that goes by without me scaring the living bejesus out of someone completely by accident because I walked too softly. Plus I'm from a family of musicians (my father actually recorded on a song that hit #1), and I'm always singing.

However, I think I took a few levels of Fighter, too. I used to be a hockey goon. :belkar:

If we're assuming races are a part of this? Orc Paragon. Cause I know some people who'd be elves. And they need a punch.

If not? Monk. Seriously. I look perfectly normal but can run at ridiculous speeds, leap heck-a-far, speak any language, walk like a ghost, teleport, and am more than willing to win a bar fight with no weapons. Heck, take run as a feat.
90ft times 5 for the run feet, so 450 ft every six seconds. 75 ft a second, 270000 ft an hour, 51 mph.

Probably wildshape ranger; the shapeshifting abilities of a druid, the style of a rogue, the spellcasting of a (low level) wizard, and no messy moral/ethical/religious restrictions. What's not to like?

Wizard would be cool, but in real life, magic would be fun but you don't need to be a walking tactical nuke, and I don't want to mind control people or tear the fabric of reality when I'm in a bad mood, so lower level spellcasting is better.

If racial classes are allowed, Dragon.

Big question: Level?

Assuming just going a base class and seeing it through till the end... probably Bard with Bardic Knack and Jack of all trades. Literally every single skill at 1/2 character level, including all knowledges.

That. Would. Be. Awesome.

If we're multiclassing and whatnot:
My Omistopher Carma'il (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=6151519&postcount=1054) character.

Spellthief + (Domain Casting) Wizard
Ultimate Magus.

Ultimate power is neat. This class gets 9th level spells only at level 21, but caster level outstrips character level by a bunch. I got him to Caster level 32 and am using Spellthief spells as a Metamagic Battery.

It uses 1 custom feat:
Spell Focus(All): 1/8 chance of improving the DC of a spell. You may take this feat up to 8 times, each time increasing the range of the success. (2/8, 3/8, 4/8, etc.)

It's tempting of course to pick Bard for the huge usefulness of charismatic abilities in real life, and I am a huge fan of Monk, but I'd choose Psion. The ridiculous abilities that would entail... and I have the control to not go crazy (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AGodAmI).

It’s a toss up between the bard and the Factotum. Both fit the same roll in a party. The bard just does it with song, and since music runs in the family that fits. But the factotum has that pulpy adventure movie feel (read Indiana Jones), and I love that.

I would have to be a Bard/Cleric. I did take one of those "What D&D class are you?" tests, but I have to admit, it fits like a glove. I'm really into my faith, and I'm training to be an opera singer.

Plus, I'm too damn pretty to not be a bard.

Hold on, a lot of people are picking prestige classes... are they actually included in the thread's question? My answer changes to Chameleon if so. Chameleons are basically the most fun things ever in a game. I imagine that it would be about twice as fun in real life.

Psion or StP Erudite. I'm a wizard but nobody sees me waggling my fingers when their SUV is suddenly thrown across the street. The Ectoplasmic Walls of fire that spell out "DONT PARK IN FRONT OF MY MAILBOX" will still probably give me away though.

Plus, I can always psychic reformation myself into something else later, if I grow tired of phenomenal cosmic power and my own demiplane.

Wizard. I can't imagine anyone ever wanting anything less then teleportation, dimension traveling, Genesis, conjuring stuff out of thin air (and selling it). The first thing I'd do once i'm high enough level and protected by contingencies and such is ensure permanent non-dispellable immortality such as that gained by class features.

Probably Rogue, although that might just be because that's the role I usually play. That, or Bard.

That sounds like a pretty cool class combination ... but if I'm not mistaken, you would need to be Level 24 or so to really get the combo fully working.

I've been wrestling with a way to do it pre-epic but still getting ninth level spells, but it doesn't seem to want to work. I think I can get them with some heighten spell+versatile spellcaster shenanigans (isn't Shadowcraft Mage wonderful?).

StP Erudite for the sheer power or Warlock for the ability to shoot things with lazorz whenever, wherever.

Ok, I have to say this. All y'all in the "I'd be X,Y, and/orZ" camp. You start out at 1st. Even if we assume we follow PC chargen rules (max HP at 1st level), that's still iminently capable of death, even if we use "RL physics interacts with us like Dnd mechanics" as our guideline for the effects of things like, say, guns.

Personally, since we are talking about Dnd classes in RL, I think we use RL physics as the rule. So X spell functions in reality like you would expect it to, more or less, even if the way the rules work it might not do quite that. And a bullet to the head will kill you unless you are somehow magically toughened (stoneskin, etc), no matter what level you are.
(of course some spells defy reality by their very nature, so we can make allowances for that :D)

So I think it unwise to plan on char paths that require loads O'levels.

Personally, its be hard to choose. The ones that spring to mind are:
Druid, if I could make it to 5th. I'd love wildshape, the communion with "nature" would be wonderful, and the spells would allow me healing and smiting my enemies :D.
Cleric: healing. I know clerics can do much more, but with cure minor/light wounds, lesser restoration, and cure disease (oh and lets not forget purify food and drink, divinations, and create water), I could make sure that no one I loved would die or be crippled as long as it didn't instantly kill them.

Wizard. I think enough people will see the benefit of free sharing of spells that there will be plenty of access to spells, and you can always barter for the spells anyway. (or Sorc for the neatness of just knowing all my spells)

Warlock: at will would come into play a looot more in RL than in Dnd.

Swordsage: lots of awesome maneuvers, and how kickass would Shadowstride be? (obtainable easily, too)

Honorable mention: Monk. a lot of martial abilities that you can't actually do in RL, instant martial arts expert skills, and the ability to not have to gear up to whup ass like most of the other martial badass classes.

And finally (what a long post >.>;), thank you, OP. I have thought about this subject muchly (though on a personal level, not a mass level), though I have been too sheepish to bring it up. :D

Wizards: with today's technology, there will soon be an international spell sharing program. Spell libraries. If someone manages it, internet spell databases.

And well, I have survived 23 years so far without getting into any serious fights,I think I can continue that tendency. So I don't worry too much about bullets to the head and more about heart disease and car accidents.

Even being a level 1 caster would be cool, if I got it on top of my own 2-3 expert levels.

@Eldan RE Bullets: I was just talking about those who claimed that they could just go farm EXP and raise in levels, and that SWAT teams would be no problem because of their levels :P

I would say that you have no expert levels, though. You have skills ( I am assuming :P) that would probably put you at 2nd or 3rd level in DnD terms, but that would be transposing yourself to a DnD world, not adding classes to a normal world. :D

Hold on, a lot of people are picking prestige classes... are they actually included in the thread's question? My answer changes to Chameleon if so. Chameleons are basically the most fun things ever in a game. I imagine that it would be about twice as fun in real life.

Good choice. and I believe they are allowed because it says `class`not `base class`.

Since people have started explaining their reasons I might as well explain mine better.

Urban Soul, inside urban areas you don't have to eat. And using the variation level 10 ability don't age. You can teleport at will through your city, hide in walls, and have one of the greatest ways to prevent crime ever. The ability to talk to the city itself.

Cop 1: "This woman was killed on this road and there isn't a single piece of evidence at all."
Urban Soul: "I'll just ask the road who did it."

Plus with the variant level 10, you get disintegrate, stone shape, and wall of stone 5/day total. Ignoring the whole "blast people into dust" part of it. Summoning walls of stone, shaping them into statues and selling them would make for a good life.

Oh and in your favored cities you "don't age" not "timeless body" meaning you don't die when your time is up.

Paladin of Tyranny with the Malasynep (http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk61/Jonathon_Morris/Picture94.png) mount from Frostburn, with the Rollers (http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk61/Jonathon_Morris/Picture96.png) graft attached on it to give it 30 ft land speed, and the Feathered Wings (http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk61/Jonathon_Morris/Picture95.png) graft to give it 60 ft fly speed with average maneuverability. Basically think I can walk on water, I can fly. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFA4lPhnh1U)

I just started running a level 5 campaign with 20k starting gold (I hate being poor, but I also don't want level 5 characters with 10th level items, and I also plan to have them fight ECL 6 encounters) and this is what one of my players' character is. Its what I would be if I could be any one character IRL. That, or a druid with an elemental companion.

I'd actually go with rogue. After all, the wizard may cast all sorts of spells, the fighter may be tougher, the bard may be more inspirational, but, in the end, I'd be the one who best knows where all of their weak points are, which I could use for good or ill.

But then, I'm a DM, and thus fit the rogue perfectly. As a DM, I have to make sure the game is interesting (much like rogues can make life interesting) and, occasionally, I have to utterly, but more importantly, tactically relieve the characters of their possessions, their livelihoods, and, in extreme cases, their lives. That last is generally reserved for a-holes and munchkins, but the first two are natural DM reactions for a game which has gotten slightly OP.

Almost certainly wizard, especially, but not limited to, if I'm the only one in the world who gets this choice.
