First; Props to Drolyt and Vaynor for the work they have done in the original (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=140428) and Expanded (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=8708645&postcount=68) Vow of Poverty Fix. This proposal is a derivative of that work.

The basic proposal is that instead of sacreficing ALL wealth for ALL the VoP rewards, choose to "buy" VoP on a level-by-level basis.

The following table is a merging of Drolyt's and Vaynor's VoP fix, with a gold value associated for each level of the vow attained:

You may choose to take the vow at any time. you may attain as many levels of the vow as the character has ECL.... but may choose to take LESS than the full ECL of the vow.
FOr example, a 10th level character can choose to skip the Vow option, and acquire equipment as normal, or may choose to acquire a number of levels equal or less than the character's ECL... for example, a 10th level fighter could choose 10 levels of the Vow, and surrender ALL wealth, or may instead choose only 7 levels of the vow. The fighter would then get all the benefits of 7th level vow, and also retain some material wealth.

The amount of wealth allowed to be retained is the ECL - the level of Vow taken; the result is the level of value allowed as indicated on the VoP Table above.

Our 10th level fighter with 7 levels of Vow has all the abilities of a 7th level Vow:

Vow of Poverty
{table=head]Level | value | Benefits
1st|150|Force Armor +4
2nd|950|Deflection +2
3rd|2750|Force Armor +5, Natural Armor +2, Endure Elements
4th|5450|Empowered Strike +1, Ability Score Enhancement +2, Resistance +1
5th|9050|Sustenance, Bonus Feat
6th|13050|Force Armor +6, Deflection +3, Natural Armor +3, Flight (Base Land Speed, Average Maneuverability)
7th|19050|Empowered Strike (Special Ability), Bonus Feat, Fortification (25%)
[/table]

The level of wealth able to be retained is 3 (ECL 10 - 7 levels of Vow)
The table shows 3rd level wealth is valued at 2750 gold. The fighter could have 2750 gold worth of wealth; magic items, property, weapons, armor...

Another example is a 1st level character takes the Vow.. gaining Force Armor +4, then subtracts the Vow level 1 from ECL 1... the result is zero... the character may have no possessions beyond clothing and minimum equipment required to perform their roles.

A character could take the Vow at level 1 as above, but from then on, take normal wealth... maximum wealth always 1 less than the max value for their ECL. . then at level 20th level could take 17 levels of Vow... abandoning all but 950 gold of wealth.

At the DM's discretion, a Vow could be relaxed, reducing the benefits of the Vow, and allow the character to accumulate additional wealth as makes sense to the player and DM.

Reflavoring:
a vow you can pick up or discard isn't much of a Vow, but permissible as the DM deems appropriate for the campaign.
One possibility is the Vow is actually a supernatural tattooing process.... as the character grows stronger in the Vow, the tattoos spread over the user. Glyphs forming on their own accord as the player chooses to take additional levels.. the glyphs would recede if the vow is relaxed. The runes and glyphs are very unique. it would be a simple history, arcana, spellcraft, or any other appropriate skill check to identify that a vow is active.

Non-sentient/unwilled creatures:
This could be administered to animals, constructs, etc... it's not a conscious decision to forego material wealth and thus rewarded as per Exalted feats.... it is a mechanical process. the Supernatural glyphs take a life of their own as an evolving armor and enhancement... as the carrier becomes stronger from the benefits of the Vow, it continues to upgrade. a wizard could apply the Vow to a golem, and the golem would gain Vow benefits equial to it's CR.

Familiars, companions, pets:
Someone could apply the vow to their familiar, pets, companions so they can more easily remain viable and survive.... the animal that is already incapable of using wealth automatically accepts benefits equal to their master's ECL... a 10th level ranger with a wolf companion would receive the normal benefits of a 5th level druid, and also 10th level Vow.
