Inspired by The Moff's cowardice :smalltongue::

I hear that. I'm afraid of posting the Hip Hop thread I've been thinking about for a while, because the metal kids would get pissed off at me.

Rappity rap stuff I'm fond of:

Danger Doom
Danger Mouse
Del the Funkee Homosapien
Deltron 3030
Dr. Octagon
E-Dubble
El-P
Gangstagrass
Immortal Technique
Jedi Mind Tricks
P.O.S.
Prefuse 73
A Tribe Called Quest
Virtuoso

AND NEWS:

In an August 2010 interview (http://triassicsquints.blogspot.com/2010/08/my-interview-with-del-funky-homosapien.html), Del said that Deltron Event II (the second album) was "just about finished actually."

Which is exciting.

That said, they've been saying it's "just about finished" or close to being finished for years now, so I don't know how much I trust that...

(And for anyone who doesn't know Deltron 3030, here's a link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7_jbluF0qo))

The form itself is cool, but I utterly loathe the mainstream gangsta version. Glorifying violence, crime, self-hate and horrible misogyny, it's pretty much a textbook example of pop-culture causing real damage.

My faves tend to be of the old-school more politically astute variety - Public Enemy, Paris, KRS-One. The Beastie Boys are still great.

I have pretty mixed feelings about Eminem. Very very good at what he does, but the content of his earlier stuff completely turned me off. He strated getting much more interesting with his later stuff though, and I absolutely loved Mosh (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNVV2umbJ9A&ob=av2n).

Cartoonist Kieth Knight of the K Chronicles and Knight Life has a great band, The Marginal Prophets.

I have a friend who's recently gotten me into underground hip hop.

Some favorites, in a vaguely best to less best order:
Blue Scholars: Hands down one of my favorite groups, Seattle-based duo with some of the most meaningful lyrics I've heard as well as great flow.

Atmosphere: Performs with a live band, focuses more on stories than getting a real message across. Always a great listen though.

Mos Def/Black Star (Mos Def and Talib Kweli): Just good, 'nuff said.

Del tha Funkee Homosapien: I only know Mr. Bob Dobalina well out of all his work but I love it dearly.

Who says you can't be a fan of metal and hip-hop? I listen to just as much Behemoth, Blind Guardian, Satyricon, Immortal, Baroness, Arch Enemy & Cthonic (and a great deal more) as I do hip-hop artists. Most of my commonly listened to hippity-hoppity musicians are:

Aesop Rock
Atmosphere
Busdriver
The Beastie Boys
Beck (okay, not really hip-hop, but a fair few of his songs and albums are heavily influenced, like Odelay! & Guero)
Busta Rhymes (his older works like ELE & When Disaster Strikes)
Cage
Cannibal Ox
Dangermouse
EL-P
Eyedea & Abilities
Felt
Gnarls Barkley
Hakiu D'Etat
Hangar 18
Illogic
MC Frontalot
Mos Def
MURS
Peeping Tom (Mike Patton's hip-hop influenced collaboration album featuring DoseOne & Kool Keith)
The Weathermen

There are more, I just can't seem to think of all of them right now.

I'm pretty boring when it comes to the Hippity-hop. Off the top of my head I'm into:

B.I.G., obviously
Beastie Boys
Public Enemy
Nas
The Wu
Eminem
Ice Cube
RATM, if they count
A little bit of Tupac

Although my interest in rap, and pretty much any other kind of music, stops right around the time the 21st century hits. I've got an unopened copy of The Blueprint on my desk, one day I'll be brave enough to make the jump.

Only real artist that I listen to is Aesop Rock, who I adore. In fact, I think it was a poster on GitP mentioning him that put me in his general direction in the first place. Probably the best thing I like about Aesop is just the amazing mastery of beat and rhythm he has. It just... flows so well. Can't describe it well. Fast Cars is probably my favourite song of his, followed by Catacomb Kids.

I probably should listen to some Del the Funkee Homosapien, since they're compared a lot in some circles.

I'll just say that I went to high school with Slug from Atmosphere, so no, I think I'll pass on them.

Glad to see Aesop Rock getting deserved respect on this thread. Big ups also to Jurassic 5, Company Flow, Dr. Octagon, Wildchild (http://www.videosurf.com/video/wildchild-renegade-master-on-totp-62895651), Dead Prez, Abstract Tribe Unique, The Roots, Pedestrian, Odd Nosdam, Why?, pedestrian, Sage Francis, Doseone, Awol one, Outkast, Buck 65, Slick Rick, Roots Manuva, A Tribe Called Quest, Dungeon Family (Of 'Follow The Light (http://www.videosurf.com/video/dungeon-family-follow-the-light-8968555?vlt=ffext&vlt_position=inline)' fame) and for the really brave, Mantronix (http://www.videosurf.com/video/mantronix-who-is-it-79388274)

Whoo hoo, a thread for us hippity hoppity folk!

I'm definitely a fan of A Tribe Called Quest, The Black Eyed Peas, The Orishas (technically raggaeton, I think...), and assorted songs by Michael Franti/Spearhead, Dead Prez and M.I.A. (who may actually count as electronica, but at least her first album was for sure hip hop). Also, I like Handlebars by the Flobots. Just putting it out there. And I think Lady GaGa counts as hip hop? No clue. But I love her.

You MAY be able to tell that my definition of the genre is broader than some people's.

Basically, I'll listen to any hip hop that isn't about killing people gratuitously to prove you can, or considering women less than people. I.e., I like non "gangsta rap."

Just a bit, :smalltongue:.

As far as the difference between hip hop and rap, I've always gone with the definition that hip hop puts more emphasis on lyrics, while rap focuses more on beats. Of course Blue Scholars and Lupe Fiasco are two artists with the best of both worlds from both genres. Also, the definitions are so vague depending on which ones you use it's pretty much up to personal opinion.

In other news, I'm not sure if they count as hip hop as most of their music is instrumental but I've started listening to Black Violin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCXVCpcopa8). Great stuff.

That was nice. :smallcool: If it's hip-hop beats with classical-ish stuff over the top you want, then Emancipator (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wy28qRyQfEE) or Saltillo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dH8GW0C3pzs) is the way to go. Though they're more trip-hop than hip-hop... still both amazing, though.

For those of you who don't know, Michael Larsen, AKA Eyedea from Eyedea & Abilities passed away last week. We lost an amazing artist.

I like the Emancipator one a lot, Saltillo didn't do it for me as well.

@Moff, interesting stuff, I like it.

Dam. That's terrible. I didn't know. He will be missed.

Big ups to some female lyricists, Dessa, MC Lyte, and Mystic (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CkrdiABTcaI&feature=youtube_gdata).

No love for Dälek (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTeIq8CCG3s) yet? Sharp-tongued, intelligent lyrics coupled with dark, noisy, sample-less production.

And you gotta intrigued by a hip-hop duo that has such a wide range of non-hip-hop influences (Black Flag, John Coltrane, Einstürzende Neubauten, Faust, Godflesh, and My Bloody Valentine just to name a few).

Well if you like that then this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EtT7x2jojvY) could be the thread's theme... (Acey is the bomb)

Also big ups to The Fugees, Method Man, Kool Kieth, Biz Markie, Chubb Rock, Pete Rock, & add to the De La Soul pile.

Plus, Method Man was in The Wire. **** yeah.

Oh, and here. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ME9cHn6j88o) Tobacco ft. Aesop Rock. God damn. Tobacco should produce a whole rap album.

I'm practically obliged to post a link to Until The End Of Time (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7JuArhpTB8), I suppose.

I'd put in a good word for Outkast, too. Stankonia is the album that probably gets the most love, but I also like me some Aquemini.

Ooh looks like a good chance for some recommendations judging by the number of Aesop Rock likes flying around. I'm trying to get into hip hop and loved Flobots Handlebars and Aesop Rock's None Shall Pass and Labor Days but apart from those individual songs not much else has appealed (except surprisingly I liked Death of Auto-Tune despite hating everything else Jay Z has done). Could anyone recommend similar songs?

If you liked the song "None Shall Pass", then the rest of the album of the same name will probably appeal to you.

The only thing I know about underground hip-hop is that this song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xwnfCVO1tw) blew my mind once. Here's an appropriate link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfCAZtVzqQo) for Halloween to show off how neat the Anticon label can be and lead to other projects like Deep Puddle dynamics, Themselves, Mush records and cLOUDDEAD. The critics call it 'avant garde' hip hop.

I remember DoseOne onstage at 1st Ave about ten years ago doing live sampling during songs through a tiny toy megaphone and then layering more effects on top. Jel (I think it was Jel) had one of those beat pads with the motion sensor button, and he would headbang to activate it. Nice to see how they pulled off the crazy innovative sound and kept the timing while talking over each other.
