Not asking for a discussion of the Warlock as an arcane caster, simply asking - if a warlock uses an invocation to alter his eldritch blast, does it last until he dismisses it, or is it useable as part of the eldritch blast action?

Eldritch essences are a part of Blast action.
As are Eldritch Shapes.

Eldritch essences are a part of Blast action.
As are Eldritch Shapes.

Would that provoke an attack of opportunity for casting the eldritch essence and for the blast, or just for the blast? Say, if you had a way of applying your eldritch essence to a melee attack, making the question more pertinent.

Applying the blast essence is part of the same action as casting the eldritch blast, only casting the eldritch blast provokes. Kind of like how applying metamagic doesn't provoke an extra AoO, it's just part of casting the spell.

Both essence and shape are considered a part of the blast itself, an eldric blast that is modified by hideous blow, for example, is still only one "spell". (I don't even consider the warlock as a spellcaster. he is a guy with lots of spell-like-abilities that are usable at will. not a caster.)
