How This Works:
This is the In Character thread. Anything you post here should be completely in character. No smilies please. Anything out of character should be put in a spoiler.

Make all your rolls in this thread, and again, in a spoiler. I will do some rolls for you to make things go smoother if needed.

Active posting would be nice to give a beginner DM an easier time, if someone doesn't post in a couple days, like 48 hours, I will go ahead and move the game along anyway.

The town of Travensburg has had a rough winter, and although the promise of spring seems just around the corner, the town has had to purchase food from a nearby village. The area feels peaceful, but the winter has driven a few small bands of others to search for food outside their normal territory. To protect the valuable shipment of supplies, four guards were sent to escort the wagon. Now the shipment of food is overdue.

The five of you have gathered at the town hall in the middle of the afternoon per the lord's request. You soon see a man walking towards you. A man stands before you, looking worried and impatient. He introduces himself quickly as Alexi Traven, the lord of the town, and gets down to business. "We’ve got a missing shipment of food," he says. "Two boys went out to meet the wagon this morning, and no one has returned. I’m busy here until the morning, and I need someone to go check on that wagon. The village needs the food -- scraping up the money for it was no easy chore. The path to the north should lead up to them."

Your first post:
Feel free to talk amongst yourselves and decide on what your next action is.

Oh ba ba ba ba, not so fast, my good gentleman.

A sly smile spreads across Darwin's face, as his sleepy eyes turn to inspect the lord of the town. His hands run down his coat, playing with lowermost buttons.

I wonder, and I suppose you should be able to answer my wondering, what sort of reward we will get for this.. quest. Task. Contract?Thing.

Natalie heard the orders and would depart as soon as everyone else had prepared. She in the meantime sat down on her knees, giving a prayer for the journey ahead.

"Oh beloved Pelor, give us your watching and guiding hand in our journey. Please let us reach our destination so we may deliver our food and supplies to our village, and thank you once again for your protection among the horrors of the world. Amen..."

Finishing her prayer, Natalie stands up, her attitude changing from her focused demeanor a few seconds earlier to a more bubbly one.

"So, have are we all prepared? We should set off before the sun hits the horizon."

The Kobold of the party eyed the others, his hands on his Kukri, but didn't speak. Making fun of the cleric wasn't worth it, and if the lord of the town wanted to get talked back to for being unclear, not his problem.

Not to mention the gnome. That hadn't been mentioned, and he resolved to avoid the damn thing like the plague.

Xepher smiled and patted his belly, looking at Darwin after he spoke.

"Shouldn't the fact you'll get to eat be enough for ya, mate? It's certainly enough for me."

He pats Natalie on the back on his way around her. He knew her from the temple, and he showed his appreciation for Pelor through his pat.

Putting himself next to Darwin, he looked up at the taller man waiting for his answer.

Natalie started to have her mind wandering, thinking about her times at the church and her preperation for this journey. She was really anxious to go, worried even. She was afraid that we would not return, that she could end up like the others...

Her mind awakens back to reality thanks to the pat from Xepher. She appreciated his help around the church, but was a bit shy ever since that incident in the temple... But considering he is the only that in the group she knew, she knew that she would have to trust him.

Natalie turned to the kobold. She had heard about these creatures and she found herself in an uneasy situation having to work with this kobold, even if he was associated with Father Lucius. Wanting to know more, Natalie slowly walked up to him and asked, "You were requested to come with us by Father Lucius right? How long have you known him?

"The crazy priest who looks prettier than you? He ran up and made me an offer all of 32 hours ago. Crazy old guy started yellin at me in Draconic like we were old friends, but if I'd ever met him before i'd've stabbed him by now." Natalie just had her mouth open, speechless at what to respond. She just gave a nod and walked away, thinking to herself, "I guess Xepher is the only one I can count on..."

She walked over to the gnome, still a bit wary of him, but he felt the most comforting to chat with. "Well..." she began, whispering in Xepher's ear, "We have quite a quintet don't we?

Hierro watches all of this in silence, awaiting his Lordship's answer on the payment issue. He's ready to move out, but would never pass up the opportunity of some money in the palms of the hands he gets to keep...

As skilled in charm and wit as I am, my dear vertically inferior friend, I can aquire more for a hunk of cheese worth in silver, than a silver worth of cheese.

Looking down at the gnome besides him, Darwin blinks, spinning his fingers around the hilt of his gun in the process.

And a most say, that's an exquisite coloration on that robe of yours. My name's Dawin. But you can call me Reaper.

Smiling, Darwin reaches out with his hand, waiting for a handshake.

"We have quite a quintet don't we?"

"Indeed, we do!" His cheerful tone overshadowed the grim nature of the assignment at hand.
"I do hope we can find that caravan, though. I'm hungry enough to eat like a smigledwaf!"
He hops on the balls of his feet impatiently, waiting for the others to be ready to go. If they didn't leave soon, he would have to go off by himself. And, Pelor knows, a gnome by his lonesome was always a tasty target...

After waiting for you to finish your quick discussion, Alexi addresses the issue. Looking a bit flustered, he talks quickly.

"After paying for the food, there is only a measly bit of tax left. Right now I can only offer you 10 gold pieces a piece to find the wagon of food and the others and bring them back.

But I honestly fear the worst may have fallen on our brethren. I have accepted you five incase my fears are reality. If that is the case, the reward to bring those responsible to justice will be much greater.

Please hurry, the town is starving."

Some Rolls:
[roll0]

[roll4]

For the eyes of Damien only:
You know that the town raised almost 2500 gold pieces to buy the food, and spent close to all of it. You also know that population of the town is only around 500 people.

For the eyes of Hierro and Darwin only:
You know that the town raised almost 2500 gold pieces to buy the food, and spent close to all of it. You also know that the population of the town is only around 500 people.

You are also aware that of the inhabitants of this town they consist of around the following:
High Class - 2%
Middle Class - 18%
Low Class - 70%
Poor - 20%
You know that a few of the poor have died of starvation already, and everyone is hungry, even the rich (though they still eat better than everyone else).

Despite Natalie taking the first step, Damien is only a half pace behind, easily keeping pace with the cleric, albeit a short ways to the side. He didn't care for the gold particularly; with some luck he could swap it for something of more value among the savage races; or, better yet, find a wizard to help him with it. Doing odd jobs around town to get enough funds for his gear to be upgraded sounded like a good idea. Everyone loves enchantments, after all.

Xepher follows behind the Kobold and Cleric, taking the seeable dagger from his sheathe and levitating it above his hand nonchalantly, spinning it in lazy arcs.

" A Warrior Kobold? Hope you can hold your own, lizard boy," Xepher says, a little chuckle at his own comment issuing from closed teeth.

"Come on, Sars! Don't stay behind!" In a nearby tree, an owl hoots with recognition, and lands quietly on Xepher's shoulder.

Alertness gained. +2 to all spot and listen checks.

Alexi hurries back to town hall without a word as the 5 of you leave.

Fast Forward:

You walk along for not long, just under an hour. As you crest a small hill you begin to notice something just ahead on the road.

Hierro, Darwin, and Damien only:
As you walk just a tiny bit more, the fate of the food wagon is revealed. Below you, two unknown figures bundled against the cold struggle to lead a resistant horse off the road. Two fearsome-looking orcs holding what look like huge battle axes are standing guard; one of them watches the wranglers with apparent amusement. The snow-covered ground is stained red in places, and a half-dozen bodies lie in the snow. They don't seem to notice you.
Friendly tip, if you play your cards right, you might get a surprise round.

Damien has always been quick on his feet, for various reasons that he didn't care enough about to discuss. While he probably wasn't the first to see it, he immediately turned and walked back, grabbing two of the others at random and pulling them back the way they came.

"Quiet, mammals. It appears we found our caravan." he says in a low tone as he let's go of the party members he grabbed. "Can any of you scout?"

While quick on the start, Natalie found herself at the rear. She had not the experience of the males and she felt that she was holding them back.

Listening to Damien's warning, Natalie got down on her knees to level with the kobold. She took a look at Hierro and gave a little nod, using her body language to tell him that he should scout. Hierro was a thief that was difficult to catch back in the town, so he should be perfect for this.

Hierro sniffs in disdain at this presumption. However, he sees that his skills are needed, and from his position at the rear of the party, looks at the lay of the land, trying to find the best route to get a bit closer. Having picked his favoured path, he attempts to ghost off to get as close as possible.

Is this how I do this? I think I'm the only true noob in the group, let me know what the right way of doing this is. My modifier is +8...

Hierro attempts to stealthily get closer to the figures and see what's going on. As he is walking slowly down the hill, he accidentally steps on a twig and it snaps, gaining one of the orc's attention. He cries out a guttural alarm to the others. Hierro and the others attempt to hide from the orcs, but without success. One of the figures who was wrangling the horse looked up quickly before any of the party hid themselves and the figure runs off to the west, apparently disliking the idea of a confrontation. You all seem to get behind various rocks, shrubbery, or the hill, except for Natalie. She just stands around not paying attention to what's going on, it looks like she is watching a butterfly flutter around. The Orcs see her and start moving forward while drawing their huge battle axes. The remaining figure who was wrangling the horses seems to be concentrating on something, and then a tiny flash of white light emerges from his hands for a split second.

How this works:
You are your respective color with the first letter of your PC's name.
The enemies are the gray circles with the numbers in them so you can differentiate between them.
The white spots are snow, sorry for my crappy MSpaint skillz.
The wagon is, well, the wagon.
Each square represents 5 feet, as normal.

Post what your character will do, roleplay-wise, in character. Then make a spoiler to say the OOC stuff, like 'PC walks from D5 to D7 and attacks.' Yada yada, you get the point.
Post any rolls you want to/think you should make.

When you attack, post your rolls like this.
Attack: (roll)
Damage: (roll)
Crit Threat: (roll)
If you do not hit, or do not get a critical hit, don't worry, those rolls will be ignored, just do it all at once instead of waiting to hear back from me to see if you hit, it will make combat go a lot smoother.

For the newbies, feel free to post ANY questions about combat in the out of character thread. Happy to help.

You all notice by this point that the figure messing with the horse (which the second figure escaped on by the way) is a male human.

The spellcaster is quick to the punch and casts yet another quick spell and immediately runs behind the orcs, obviously for protection, and picks up his crossbow. Darwin the Reaper runs forward, pulling out his pistol. His gun goes off with a loud Bang that many of you find agitating, not used to the sound. Unfortunately, in Darwin's haste, his aim was sacrificed, and the bullet missed the orc completely. Hierro meanwhile is running across the field with great speed and stops at a stable spot. He kneels down, readies his bow, and launches an arrow at the spellcaster, determined to take him out of the fight. While the arrow missed the human, one of the orcs happened to step right in front of it luckily, and caught a nasty blow in the shoulder. The arrow went clean through, causing blood to splatter on the orc and his comrades. Natalie decides to take a different approach to the quick and violent, and insteads immediately sets to pray to Pelor for help. In a heap of shining light, those nearby are almost blinded by it for a moment, a fearsome dog of magnificent beauty and silver fur appears before Natalie. She commands the dog to charge straight at the orc who was wounded already. However, the orc somehow manages to nimbly dodge the dog's ferocious teeth. Meanwhile, Damien has a plan of his own, he runs across the field, following Hierro, yet passing him, sprinting on his tiny little lizard feet like you never did see. He shouts out a warning, hoping to fool his enemies; it's too bad they completely ignore him. Furious at his predicament, the wounded orc yells from the back of his throat ferociously and charges straight towards the little Kobold. He swings his giant axe! Damien leans back just in time for the axe to give him a very close shave of his neck, but it didn't seem to harm him. Xepher has moved forward at this point, putting away his weapon, obviously preparing to tear the orcs' very world apart with arcane masteries far too complicated for their stunted minds. His owl chases after the rogue human, but alas, his escape on horseback proved too fast for the owl. With the wounded orc leaving to attack the Kobold, the second orc is left to deal with the dog in front of him. The orc raises his axe high above his head, and like an executioner, he swings it down and beheads the poor dog. The dog begins to fade away, back to the realm from whence it came. Suddenly, a third orc steps out of the caravan and screams bloody murder at all of you, yet you can't understand a word he says. The first thing he does is pick up his javelin and hurls it at the closest thing he can find, Damien. Luckily the kobold is quick to notice this Orc, who looks even more menacing than the first two, and has a very large sword by his side. Just as the javelin is inches in front of his face, Damien swings his Kukri, knocking the javelin to the ground and slicing it in half.

The clouds part a little and the sun shines down upon the ground.

Darwin deftly strides over to his new position and fires at the other orc with a second pistol. The bullet strikes him square in the arm, a direct hit. However, he doesn't seem very frazzled by the shot. Hierro on the other hand, fires an arrow at the same orc from behind Darwin, luckily missing him, but unluckily completely missing his target. Natalie, in the meantime, moves straight towards that nasty orc who killed her dog and swings wildly at him. She hits him in the chest with her mace, but it just bounces off his armor with no effect. The dastardly deadly lizard, however, takes a mighty swing with his kukri at the orc right in front of him. His overhand swing manages to lop off the orcs ear and slices right into his shoulder! The orc staggers down to one knee and holds the bloody side of his head with one hand. He tries to swing his mighty axe at the kobold, but Damien easily ducks under the swing. Using up the last of his energy on that swing, the orc passes out from exhaustion and falls to the ground, bleeding all over the snow.

But Natalie didn't even need to dodge it, his axe goes straight into the ground in front of her, no danger there. The third orc however, moves over in front of the human mage and draws his giant sword, determined to protect him. With that, the caster fires another bolt from his crossbow, this time aiming at the warrior who cut down one of the orcs. Damien can hear the whizzing of the bolt as it passes inches by his ear. A quick calculation from her head let her mind rest for a second as she watches the orc whiff his strike. Feeling Xepher behind her, she uses the opportunity to strafe around the orc in an attempt to flank it, just like she was taught before she left on this journey. In position, she realizes that it might be easier to make the enemy defenseless rather than killing it, so she uses her chance to disarm the orc.

Natalie moves to G14.

Hierro tries to lobby off yet another arrow at the caster, and yet again, it misses. It looked like it bounced off of something right in front of him. Natalie sidesteps the orc and attempts to disarm him. With his great strength and giant weapon, it is to no avail, and the orc ends up knocking her weapon to the ground instead, slashing her in the process! Damien meanwhile runs up to the orc protecting the caster and slashes away at him, staining his steel with blood. The master of arcane might however, runs up right next to Damien, shouts a warning, and pure power explodes from his hands. Lights of all the colors imaginable spray out, knocking both the orc and the caster off of their feet! Their weapons fall to the ground, along with them, and they stop moving. The last orc standing takes one final swing at the unarmed cleric, slashing her yet again, and tries to run away. Natalie, however, does not get beaten so easily, she grabs onto him with all her might and forces him to stay and fight, hurting him in the process. Darwin comes up behind the last orc standing, and stabs him right in the back with his rapier, dealing a mighty blow! The orc is now on one knee, ready to make a last attempt to fight. He swings his mighty axe at Natalie once more, but it's no match for her armor, and he falls to the ground, bleeding profusely from the wound to his abdominal aorta.

48 hours have passed, Darwin is moving to the bottom of initiative for round 3, he decides to flank the orc Natalie is fighting with his rapier, and is quite successful I might add.

Round 3:
Caster 1- fires crossbow, misses, misses orc 3, reloads
Hierro - fires arrow at caster, misses
Natalie - moves to g14, attempts to disarm orc 2, orc 2 AOO hits her, 4 damage, orc 2 disarms her
Damien - Moves to F12, attacks orc 3, # damage
Orc 1 - dead
Xepher - moves to f11, casts color spray, orc 3 and caster both hit
Orc 2 - attacks natalie again, 3 damage, then tries to run away, provokes AOO, Natalie grapples, # damage
Orc 3 - Not Moving
Darwin - moves to g12, attacks orc 2, hits, # damage

Round 4:
Caster 1- Not Moving
Darwin -
Hierro -
Natalie -
Damien -
Orc 1 - Dead
Xepher -
Orc 2 - Dead
Orc 3 - Not Moving

@Natalie
You take 4 damage, then 3 damage, for a total of 7, I assumed you wanted to use your AOO against the orc, but with no weapon, all you could do is grapple, so I rolled for you, you won.

Damien, wiping his blades on the poor unfortunate Orc, wanders back over to the caster, eying him before lifting his Kukri and inspecting the edge. Normally he'd clean it up more fully, but for now a more bloody image would do.

"Wake him up. I'll bet an edge on his throat will be enough." The kobold obviously wasn't joking, moving in to hold the kukri near the prisoner's neck.

"Have any of you thought of what it means to have taken him prisoner? We can't take him with us." To Damien, it was obvious. No prisoners on a strikeforce (which is what they were, in all but name. Even had a sociopath along! But the kobolds logic likely was at odds with the others' despite the rationale.

During your search of the wagon, you notice it has definitely been pilfered through and some of the food is missing. However, the wagon appears to still be mostly filled up with wheat, rice, produce, etc... Among the barrels of rice you find a very fine looking piece of armor. A breastplate. It appears to be exactly your size and shines as bright as the sun in your eyes. You believe you were meant to find it.
During your search of the wagon you also notice again the carnage around you. You see 6 more human bodies, 4 of which were obviously the guards, and the other 2 appear to be the teenagers sent this morning to retrieve the wagon. There are also 2 other heavily armed orcish bodies on the ground other than the three you slew.

Because orcs also have light sensitivity I have been paying attention, don't worry. Besides, you live with normal people, it's an okay guess that you can become accustomed to more light.

As Damien approaches the cave mouth, suddenly the shadow moves quickly. A crossbow bolt whizzes out of the cave, landing in the ground right in between Damien's feet.

You're about 10 feet away from the cave, but looking inside you can't quite see what shot at you but you know the direction it came from.

Damien, right before the shooter slipped behind the pillar, you caught a glimpse, and you don't think it's an Orc. Damien can see the inside of the chamber just fine, though in black and white. There appears to be light coming from deeper down the cave, but that doesn't help you 4 see the entrance any better, especially since the sun is setting at the moment.

Sorry for bad quality, I made this VERY quickly.

Damien, cursing, advanced, noting the split in the cave, and drew his Kukri as he halted at the intersection, glaring down both paths; he figured there would be a chamber just beyond, but he wanted to hold there first, and he glared down the two paths, as though DARING someone to take a shot at him.

Move to H13 (I believe), making a spot check, holding position.

Draw mace, move to H11.

Unsure what he could do to the aid the fight, Xepher moves foward, looking around the lip of the cave to see anything he could see.
"Come, Sars!" a little owl landed on Xepher shoulder, and together they looked into the darkness.

"Guys? The best spells I can use hit... Well, just about everyone. There's not much I'm gonna be able to do for ya."

2 moves actions to F17.

Readying his bow, Hierro pads silently towards the left fork, straining his senses to gain any inkling of a surprise attack.

The enemy jumps out from behind the wall and fires 2 bolts from his crossbow, one at Natalie, and one at Damien. Natalie's new armor proves itself easily against the feeble bolt, but Damien takes one to his foot.

You all can see that this is a male human with a crossbow.

@Hierro
You think you see another figure deep in the back of the cave. It was just a flicker, and if it was something, it stopped moving now.

Edit:
Map now up.
And Damien takes 1 damage.

Noticing a flicker of movement further down the cave, Hierro calls a warning to the others:
There's another one back there!

Then, moving forward to get a clear shot, Hierro looses an arrow at the first enemy.

Damien mutters curses as he hops on one foot, moving behind cover and checking to see if it impaired his movement ability. Satisfied, he is quick to move (not toward the crossbow wielded) but down the other path.

Move to I8, examine the room, and have my standard action be "retreat to I9" if more than one crossbowman is apparent.

Seeing Damien hide, Natalie gets into cover and assumes a defensive position.

Move to G16 (or G15 if otherwise). Draw weapon and shield if I have not done so already.

Damien heads farther down the cave trying to see anything else down there. As he is peering down the cave, he notices the second figure coming straight at him, another orc swining a giant axe. Natalie and Xepher go into defense mode. Meanwhile, Hierro is on the offense, unfortunately his arrow just narrowly misses the crossbowman. The crossbowman returns fire, but both of his bolts also narrowly miss Hierro, sinking into the ground beneath him. The orc however has a different approach to combat, and charges straight at Damien and swings his giant axe, but Damien of course nimbly dodges out of the way.
