Thread Necromancy - why is it bad?

I understand that in the general scheme of things, you don't want threads rising from the dead all the time - it makes the place look untidy. But if someone has a pertinent point to continue a discussion on, why is it preferred practise to start a new thread rather than resurrect the old one?
