Ok so you know why you are here, so start being random... within reason.

The Rules would you kindly read these, and obey them...

1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

14. Once you have made a Random Banter thread, you must wait 50 threads before making another one.

15: good, now Would you kindly stab the hippie

Well, I'm speaking from a differed perspective. I imagine a little sister would be great if you were a sister yourself.

I never had a biological brother, only the two younger sisters... and they were nightmares and a half. That is to say, they were three nightmares combines...

Speaking as a Big Sister and Eldest, they're all annoying. I'm not exactly much of a girl either, so Little Sister's the 'girliest' girl in the house (she has two cute posters and once wore a skirt of her own free will to a non-formal event).
Little Sisters are shrill and annoying.
Especially when they're the baby of the family.
The only people younger than her on the maternal side of the family are great-grandchildren! The oldest of which is . . . eight.
Baby Sisters get away with everything. And it's the Bigger Sister that gets all the blame.

At least we don't get into physical altercations more than five or six times a year.

Blanket statement is hurtful. I wasn't that bad... Well, at least I knew when to stop being annoying...

You have any Little Siblings?
If yes, then you know how annoying they always are.
If no, Little Siblings are always annoying. Sometimes they can be endearingly so, or simply annoying as a catchy song can be annoying.

From this thread:

Heh, I'll just have one more turn...
What do you mean it's 4am and I've got work in 3 hrs...
Just one more turn.

College Husband is a Civ lover and I know he's been looking forward to Civ V. A lot.

Not to mention that I got to play Civ IV for a few weeks back in March or so. I lost ten hours to that game in my first sitting.
In my case it was a "Well, it must be dinner time now, I've probably been playing for a couple of hours." *looks at clock* "Four in the morning?! I have a lecture at nine and I haven't done any reading for tomorrow's class!"

Ahh, New thread.

And, ahh, Civ V. I got it the same day it was released (last Friday), but I still haven't played it especially much (I blame little brother for hogging it, despite it being my game and mine alone. However, I'm not going to shove him away like he does to littlest brother, because I really don't want to sink to his level).

And for you fellow Civ addicts out there, there is still hope (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03g5nzM6tTI).

What saddens me is that it's not as lucid as it used to be, that the automated citizen allocation only seems to focus on food production and nothing else, and that the AI can be plain stupid at times, despite your chosen difficulty.

I don't find the AI particularly dull on the higher difficulties, and the automation will favor food over any other, but you are free to toggle to a different city focus, and the city will adjuster their workers to fit that. Also, manual allocation is still allowed.

Also... Germany's ability, Furor Teutonicus, is only useful in the early stage of the game, and then it's debatable. I cleared well over a dozen barbarian encampments, defeating a barbarian unit that was stationed on a camp, and only got 2 units to join me despite the 50% rate... very disappointing.

Well, I haven't gotten into any war yet in my game (Prince difficulty), and my little brother is only playing on Warlord difficulty, but there, it's happened multiple times that the AI ignores exposed Cannons next to their units in favour of fully functional Riflemen, and I've read that it's the same way in the higher difficulties. Yeah, I really should play a bit more before passing a judgement.

And I know that I can toggle the focus, but I'm pretty averse to using them thanks to Civ IV being a bit too focused when one is picked (practically stopping growth for production, for example), and the standard focus is supposed to be balanced. There is should be a reason to there being a growth focus too, after all

Well, the special ability might not be the best, but the Landsknecht is really fast to build, and the Panzer is a good late-game unit. Some of the other nations doesn't really have that amazing powers either.

On Christmas comming early, I haven't seen any Christmas decorations yet, but I can bet all I own on the first comming up before the first snowfall here in my town. Now, it would actually be possible to bet on wether there has been any snowfall at all before Christmas itself... and I won't be so stupid as to bet everything I own either. :P

Now, admittedly, the Landsknecht won me two seperate wars (one involving the allied antagonists) and I haven't played with the pikemen of another Civ just yet so I have no comparison.

The one I'm thinking of stars Loveable Furry Ol' Grover, and starting at the very first page, he's worried about the monster who will show up at the end of the book, doing things like begging the reader to not turn the page and building brick walls to keep you from being able to turn it.

At the end, the monster turns out to be Grover himself.

Should I see if I can sneak in?

Absolutely. I would, if I wasn't lazy, and also not in Oxford.

Happy birthday, Trobman.

ION: So, it turns out the first NUGSS rehearsal was this evening. I discovered this about an hour before it started, with my dinner not going to be ready for another 20 minutes. Managed to get there only 10-15 minutes late, but for some reason the Union had been shut until 7:30, so I had to wait around. But then, I got in and all was well. Saw a bunch of people I haven't seen for months, sang some G&S, ate some muffins (There were muffins to help entice the freshers).
Good numbers of new people, hopefully they'll stick around. It should be a good show this one.

I'm still not really all that keen on him. But it's a lecture series on Tolkien.
Besides, three of the lectures are on Tolkien's Mythmaking (and therefore worldmaking), and as an aspiring writer, knowing how to build such a well-built world is important.
THen Tolkien's Reuse of Medieval Literature. Also know as How To Reuse Really Good Plots.
Then there's Tolkien's Languages aka: how to conlang.

These three are all the reason I need.

Knife is dug in deeper . . .

There is some Marlowe.
Of course, there's also a six week lecture series solely on Christopher Marlowe as well.

Oh yeah, and I agree with Pyrian and Interryobobob.
Some accents might make me find someone less attractive, maybe. Due to me associating them with the kind of people I really don't like. But I can't think of a case where an accent would cause me to find someone more attractive than otherwise.

*boogies alone in corner*

I just got back my first university paper. It was a small one and we had to do it with someone else. We ended up getting a 64%:smallyuk:

We were really unorganized so we just split it up into sections for each of us to do. When we got it back the marks were broken down for each section. In the sections I wrote it said it was well done, good description, etc etc. Under my partner's section it was the exact opposite:smallsigh:

I suppose we should have got organized and did it together and this all could have been avoided, but it still bothers me.

Because we're all first year students and he was feeling kind (pitying us) my prof gave the entire class a chance to fix our essays and resubmit them. My partner doesn't want to bother, but I think I'm just going to fix it myself. I really want to get a good grade.

Accents are really disassociated with cuteness as far as I'm concerned. The real cuteness factor is not the region from which their speech is associated, but the way in which they speak.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

I don't know that book.... I used to read a book about a puppy who always arrived later at home than his brothers. The brothers arrived late and were sent to bed with no dinner, but he got home later and snuck into the kitchen to eat.

Until one day..... SPOILER ALERT! His brothers arrived home early and ate everything. Poor puppy.

The book, by the way, was called the Pokey Little Puppy. I used to read it to my sister.

GAH!!
I just had a call from a guy at work (he's working from home today) complaining about the fact that our team's mail server size has been exceeded again, only a day after they archived a whole load of e-mails.

Turns out that he's the main cause of the mail server exceeding the 250MB limit we have because he's been engaging as a go-between between two guys that seemingly can't speak to each other directly, and they're sending mails with over 9MB worth of attachments that no longer are important to the mail conversation because they both have the attachments.
These attachments take up over 9MB per e-mail, and when I went through the sent folder and this guy's personal folder on the mail server I found seven (yes, 7!) e-mails from this conversation all sitting there, happily containing the attachments all having been sent either on Monday or yesterday.

No bloody wonder the mail server size is exceeded.

GAAH!!

Personally, although I officiate football according to the NCAA rules (slightly amended for the UK market) I can't seem to get into college football in the US.
Too many teams to keep track of, and too many 'power house' schools playing what can only be described as sacrificial lambs to pad their standings.

I'm also not a fan of the BCS ranking system, where racking up points against a hapless opponent is generally seen as a good thing.

Edit: That being said, I'll probably try to remember to watch the Sooners/Longhorns game this weekend.

I just saw the first ever Dutch horror movie.

It's about a elevator.

Was it an evil elevator? Or was it misunderstood and trying to save everyone from the real threat? Or was the elevator just some mundane set piece?

I have been summoned back! By the power of this ethernet cable, I HAVE THE POWEEEEERRRRR!!!

Oh, and PMing you. :smalltongue:

Replied.
My internet has been down for the entire day. Only been up for the last half hour.
I ended up doing eighty odd lines of translation today. Productive day is productive.
And I got a sore throat because Littlest Brother threw an hour long shouting hissy fit, while I, the incompetent computer girl, did her best to fix everything.
He stopped screaming when I iust gave up and screeched in his face.
His face was a picture.
His reaction: "No need to shout."
Mum heard that and burst out laughing.

No, I may not, considering that in my 2nd year I'll have the chance to do pretty much the exact same thing if I choose a certain option, since one of the lecturers is a Tolkien expert. :smallamused:

English degrees are never impractical!
In fact, my timetable seems quite suited for me. Lots of time for reading and such.

Except for that stupid presentation tomorrow. :smalltongue:
And yet I still have more free time.

I really need a new fountain pen. My fingers are black as pitch. Except where they're silvery graphite coloured.
And I've a lingering cramp.

Say, can anyone think of any famous/notable mythological/fictional sisters, more specifically older female sisters to male characters? I'm drawing a bit of a blank.

...Ok, now how about nanny/surrogate mother type figures? All I can think of offhand for this one is the Capitoline Wolf which nursed Romulus and Remus.

One of my friends has been mistaken for or called the girlfriend, nanny, sister, and most recently (as of yesterday) mom of this kid of a neighbor of hers who she picks up from school and drops off at home.

I managed to hit Jocasta immediately, followed by Ophelia, but petered out when I couldn't think of anything for sister and the best I could do for nanny was the wolf.

That's probably why comic-book land differs so dramatically in this respect from real-life land. In real-life, the mad scientists want to take over the world but aren't engineers, while the mad engineers just like blowing stuff up.

Who doesn't?

I've always preferred freezing things myself. Blowing stuff up is so loud and messy. There's an artistic beauty to freezing things. It's the gentleman's using-science-to-destroy-things.

There were worse and weirder games. They were going for about £7 or so in the shop.

...>w<; I have no idea what this means, but it sounds hilarious already.

Please explain. I must know.

There was an exhibit of paintings at the museum we went to, and each painting had a little box that people put comments on about the painting in question.
There was a painting called something like Eastern Coast of Scotland and it was a mother and daughter standing on a coastal path looking at flowers.
And one person had written HORSE LAND!! on one of the comments. It was so innappropriate and wrong that it was hilarious.
We probably spent over an hour in that gallery after we discovered that every painting had at least a dozen little cards of comments.
We kept giggling and laughing in a predominantly quiet museum.

For such a dinky city I'm told that museum is fairly good. Not fantastic, but fairly good.

I've seen things just as bad on console shelves, just not ever in the same quantity as with PC games. <.<; Personally I think it's just because computer games are easier to program and marketers figure it is more likely to attract people who have no idea what gaming is about.

ION: When I went to the shop this evening to get some groceries, I had to get some money from the ATM machine. When I got to it, it kept beeping incessantly, and on further inspection, there was a wad of cash just sitting there in the cash slot.
A £200 wad of cash.
With no one around looking to collect them, I figured I'd put the wad of cash out of it's misery and handed it in to the store's 'Lost and found' at the customer service station before I went about my shopping.

I found a DVD I wanted, while shopping, and after paying for my stuff, I had to go back to the customer service station to get the actual DVD, and when I got there, the woman that I handed the wad of cash in to said that someone had called and asked if anyone had handed them in, even if she figured no one would have done so.
She asked me to hang around for a few minutes until the woman that called arrived to get her money.

Got £20 from her for being honest enough to hand the money in instead of just taking it for myself.

This is true.

To be totally honest, though, after I'd handed the money in, I spent most of the time while shopping beating myself up for being too honest for my own good and that I could really use £200.

Those thoughts were greatly lessened when the woman turned up tp collect her money, though.

Jigglypuff is a gorram waste of space in Smash Bros. "Characters from the games, not the anime" my ass. We could've had Mega Man...

Kirby is all the pink-sphere-of-cute we need.

In Brawl, she's a waste of space. In Melee, she's like this unstoppable killing machine. I used her on 4 people free for all matches and wont by like 10 points. Considering she has an ability to knock you out of the stage when you only have like 30 damage.

EDIT: And we couldn't have had MegaMan. Search your feelings, you know it's true.

Inafune said he'd let Sakurai add Megaman. Inafune CREATED Megaman. We could've, easily. Instead we got.....Sonic...and Jigglypuff....and another Fire Emblem swordsman....and a THIRD Fox McCloud.

I'd better stop before this turns into one big SSB war...
I'm licking my wounds and awaiting the announcement of SSB4.
