I'm contemplating running a game in which characters may only take a single level in any class or prestige class. I think it could have some interesting results, and it might even help to balance everything a bit more, as the top tier classes are likely to lose at least three caster levels.

What do you all think? Would you want to play a game like this, or is it too restricting?

I would consider some other options like making the maximum number of Tier 1 and 2 class levels equal to 1/2 a character's total level.

So, you can't take a level of wizard until level 2 and you can't take a second level of wizard until you'r level 4.

This will limit all of the Tier 1 and 2 classes to becoming more varied and encourage the players to take only levels in Tier 3 spellcasters and classes.

it will pretty much make magic minor utilities until 6th lvl, when they will start dipping into every full caster prestige they can find. except I think most will require more caster levels than they will have....
so pretty much no full casters. You would only take a level of a caster class for utility.

I would perhaps play in it, but I think it would reduce most character concepts to absurd chimeras. >.>;

It wouldn't really be that hard to get a good caster progression going, it would just be delayed a little.

Something like

Rogue/Specialist Wizard/Something/Something/Something/Unseen Seer/Ruathar/Master Specialist

or

Cleric/Something/Something/Something/Something/Divine Oracle/Ruathar/Radiant Servant of Pelor

might be good ways to get started, and there are lots of others.

You could take a level in some of the racial paragon classes. Some, like elf advance your spellcasting.

I've also decided that anytime I need an unleveled NPC (besides adept), I'll use the paragon classes, rather than the generic 1 HD commoner. It's weird how much dwarfier your dwarves seem when they have different skills from a human farmer.

You could, but oddly enough the Drow Paragon is the only with a caster level increase at first level.

Taking that one feat (forgot the name - it's from the FRCS I think) that lets you cast a single level 2 spell, you could get into Master Specialist at level three rather than "Something".

Also, throwing in Ur-Priest, Mystic Theurge and Lyric Thaumaturge will make for yum.

Spellthief with Master Spellthief feat is also yum.

By the by, there've been two threads like this one rather recently. Might be worthwhile to look up.

If you're going to do that, ban Sublime Chord and Ur-Priest.

Here's why. (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=9215621&postcount=6)

Yeah, for arcane casters (and to a lesser extent, divine casters), once you employ a few tricks to get a sufficient caster level and/or spell level, it's easy to continue progressing spellcasting by single-level dips.

Yeah, I guess so. I guess I figured it would be harder to find the prereqs for the casting PrCs. I guess I underestimted the sher amount of classes available :P
P.S. I laughed when I read your name, Duke.
