So, some friends at school are trying out d&d 3.5 with a DM, and since I've been playing for a while I said I'd drop in and help out. Since I'm coming in late they already have a balanced party so I get to play what I want.

What I'm thinking at the moment is a Gish of some sort. I've always liked that type of character for the flavor if nothing else.

I have played with Nine Swords, but I'd like to try something different since it's a little funky compared to what they are working with. So, What would you suggest?

BTW I don't mind being a little underpowered as long as the class is fun to play. We start at first level.

What classes did they pick? If it's balanced then any class can't hurt. Support classes like bard are a good direction for staying core; but on the can't hurt side you can Gish/multi-class your heart out.
Personally, I'd probably look at class variants from Unearthed Arcana. Maybe like the battle sorcerer. But that's just me.

Paladin2/Sorcerer4/Spellsword1/Abjurant Champion is something I really want to play some time.

Pretty Gishy and seems like it's be fun.

Duskblade (http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php?topic=525.0) = made of gish (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18443).

Psychic warriors make for really fun characters if you can stand psionics. Powers have lots of variety as you can have buffs, utility powers or even a few offensive ones.

I often forget to mention psywar , simply because it's usually not an option is most games (unfortunately).
but yeah .... psywar = win

Make a half orc, high strength, high intelligence (I know I know)...

1 level barbarian
1 level extra specialist wizard transmuter with the option of taking the swift action shape change instead of a familiar and head for abjurant champion.
Any extra non spell casting levels go fighter for the feat.

Get power attack, leap attack and hit for full power attack every time. The idea is to have an enlarged high bab wizard using wraithstrike to hit people very hard with a big stick. Plus you get all the role play of playing an honest to god, half orc wizard. The lowish intelligence does not matter too much because you don't cast save or die spells. You cast haste, bulls strength, wraith strike, bigbys shocking grasp and stuff like that.

You also have some generally useful spells to help out the party. With abjurant champion and swift shield etc you are laughing. A good class to go into with this could be swiftblade, or the prestige class from the dmg for gishes, I forget the name.

I built a character like this at level 11, he was completely awesome in play and loads of fun (Yes not optimised, but great fun to play).
