Your group of adventuring friends has been on a few minor quests together, but you have yet to face anything truly dangerous or exciting. Your current quest certainly seems a little dull too: running errands for a librarian is hardly the stuff of epic legends. But the aged dwarf was looking for someone to deliver a message to a friend of his, and since the pay was good - 100 gp for a simple delivery! - you accepted. Sealed in a scrollcase, you are to bring the message to a wizard known by the name of Grayfinch from the port city of Silverhex. That was yesterday. The trip to Silverhex should take about three days total, so you expect to be there by tomorrow. The well-travelled road leading there is mostly through woodlands.

Dusk is approaching fast, but luckily, there's an inn by the forest road in the middle of the woods. No doubt, with this location, the owners make a pretty penny from travellers like yourself. As you get nearer, you see a sign on the side of the building, showing a prancing horse above the name "The Hungry Stallion Inn". From inside you sense the sound of clinking mugs and the smell of roasting meats.

"Maybe here I can manage to grab a decent drink, so far this journey has been the same as all the others only with a grand increase in pay for us afterwards."Veit said out loud while doing his best to keep a watchful eye on his comrades, some of them looked quite eccentric and unable to stand up to a brawl if one broke out.

Samihl Pithgale

Samihl is walking towards the end of the group. He has a dull expression on his face. Berra, his owl companion, is out of sight, but Samihl is aware of her presence in the trees to their left.

"Hopefully the extra money means this will be more exciting than or previous adventures. I'm getting tired of running errands."

Samihl looks around, examining the woodlands surrounding them.

Sounds like a good idea. I think we might have to watch what we say in there though. If we mention that we were hungry enough to eat a horse they might take that as our order. He Grins.

Iwyn Myostade

Drawn by the nice smells and outburst of laughter, Iwyn and his friends find themselves standing at the front door of 'The Hungry Stallion'. 2 more days of travel to go until they arrive in Silverhex, and if every stopping place will be an inn of some sorts, the reward won't be worth the trip.

Before entering Iwyn just speaks up: 'So that's agreed that if there are sufficient rooms available, each one gets his own, right?' When saying these words, his eyes rest on Veit for a moment. The prospect of sharing a room with that woodland strider does not appeal to him.

You enter the inn. As you walk in, the bartender, a middleaged elf, looks up, leaves the bar and approaches you. Welcome to the Hungry Stallion. What can I do for you? A place to sleep and something to eat?, he suggests as he points at a nice buffet with meat and plenty of fresh looking bread, salads and grilled vegetables. In the kitchen visible through the door behind the counter, you see another elf in an apron cutting more meat from a boar roasting over a fire, no doubt the source of the delicious odors. In fact, all of the staff seems to be elves. Do you have any steeds that need to be taken care of?, he inquires.

The inn looks rather well visited and is pretty clean and tidy. About thirty or so travellers are here, mostly humans. Some are eating, some drinking and yet others playing dice in the corner.

If you want to orient yourself in the inn, you can make appropriate rolls. Unless you're doing some diligent searching, spot checks and possibly sense motive checks are probably the most relevant here. If you want to find someone specific, gather information may be appropriate.

Garwain: you notice nothing other than this looking like a nice place to spend an evening.

Iwyn likes seeing some elvan faces around. It makes him think of home. His father and mother, his old town neighbours. On the other hand it is an exciting view, seeing al sorts of adventurers packed togheter. With enough beer or wine, there will be a lot of stories to be heard.

No thanks, I don't have a mount. We would like to rent 4 rooms for the night, and a nice warm meal for dinner.

Looking at all the other travellers, it might not be a bad idea to inquire about the roads ahead.

Who else than the bartender is the gatherer of information?
Please tell me, is there anything particular we should be aware of while traveling further to Silverhex? Did you hear of any perrils that were encountered by travellers?

The bartender smiles at you as you order the four rooms. The single rooms are 4 gp a night for each, including two meals and beverages. All payment is done at check-in, he tells you. It is not particularly cheap, but that's what you get for being the only available inn along this stretch of the road. At least, it looks like the quality is high. As for the dangers of the road, he shakes his head. No sir, I haven't heard about any dangers ahead. Travelling to Silverhex should be perfectly safe.

"4 gold seems to be a bit high, but you do seem to have a good quality place here. But I must ask, what is the quality of your drinks?Veit calmly asked the bartender hoping that the drink quality would be enough to persuade him that this inn is worth the price tag.

RebelRogue
2010-10-12, 04:28 AM
William makes a good case for him, regarding the price tag of the stay. You mest remember, that the price includes our luxurius menu and beverages. Well..., he hestitates. I'll make that 3 gp for each of you, he whispers, making sure none of the other patrons hears it. But please keep your drinking reasonable then, or you'll ruin me!, he says half joking. Speaking of drinks, he continues, adressing Veit, They're all locally produced, from our wine to our spicy ales made from the local flora of the forest - old elven recipe. Not as strong as your kin usually make it, but I think you'll like it none-the-less. Also, we have freshly pressed fruit juice and of course crystal clear spring water for those who prefer non-alcoholic beverages.

William:
History: You know, that the elves of the area have been running the Hungry Stallion for over a hundred years now. Some say that they've become greedy over the years as the hefty price tag indeed indicates. It's a quiet area usually, but occasionally footpads and rogues roam the roads as they do most places. Once in a blue, some of them even manage to steal a bit of gold from the customers of the inn while they're there. Other checks: Unfortunately, you haven't really heard any recent stories of what is happening around here.

hardRAWKR:
Spot and sense motive: As you enter, the elves certainly watch you, but since you more or less look like rich adventurer types, you see nothing particularly odious about that. A few of the patrons seems to keep an eye on you too, particularly two of the shadier looking dice players.

Before Veit can get his swing in, the cook lunges out at him with his knife. He fails miserably from his prone position and is swiftly knocked unconscious by the side of the dwarf's axe. The bartender - now halfway through the doorway, but still prone - does not look happy about these turns of events.

Readied action, though it is hard for him to hit, lying down: [roll0] vs. AC, damage [roll1] if he hits.

Since he is prone, Veit's attack connects, and the cook is knocked unconscious.

At this point, the south door is slammed open to have two elves in chain shirts and longbows enter the room, swiftly nocking an arrow each. You recognize them as the ones who helped you with you luggage (or at least offered to do so). The eastern door is opened as well, and a younger looking elf enters, also with a bow, though with no armor. All bows are pointed at you in a silent warning, grim expressions on all their faces.

The new elves have rolled an initiative of 10. They all ready actions. However, Iwyn's prepared action will take place now...

Unfortunately for Iwyn, Samihl is somewhat in the way of his arrows, and therefore Silaqua is not hit. Seeing this, all three of them release their arrows at Iwyn and his friends. Apparantly, they have no qualms of attacking a fellow elf. Fortunately for him, the cover his friends grant him works to his advantage this time, and he is left unhit.

Cover grants Silaqua a +4 AC bonus, unfortunately :smallfrown: The elves use their readied actions to shoot at Iwyn (and if he drops, those nearest to him, i.e. Samihl, then William):

Seeing that William is now threatening both of the elven warriors, Himo briefly points at him, waiting for the stableboy to fire his bow before he and Silaqua meaneuvers close to the gnome, firing at him at point blank range. The gnome is quick though, so only the stableboy's arrow hit him for a minor fleshwound.

Hmm, my MapTool file seem to have been corrupted/erased for some reason, so no map atm. In any case, Himo and Silaqua close in on William, 5-foot stepping to H7 and I8 respectively, getting inside his reach and fire at him at point blank range. Also, it seems I forgot the +1 for their PBS on damage, the last time: Hilmo and Silaqua have composite bows. They also carry falchions, btw. If William drops, they shift to Samihl (and then Iwyn).

The innkeeper, lashes out at Berra as she closes in on him, landing a good blow of the bird. To add injury to insult, the innkeeper is too quick for her to let her grab the whistle.

Warning! Rule Wall-of-Text: In order to grab the whistle, Berra must enter the innkeeper's space. This provokes an Opportunity Attack. Even though the innkeeper does not possess the Improved Unarmed Strike Feat, the AoO is made as the owl is out of melee reach, so no counter-AoO is possible.

"Aha!" says Iwyn with a smile, "Now we're getting somewhere."

Something is odd about the way this information seems to come out and Iwyn perceives that this could be a lie.

He puts the arrow back in his quiver, and holds his bow in one hand. "See, that wasn't so bad. Now let's all get back to the inn where you will show us the rooms of those 2. Not any room, but the one that is listed in your visitors log. You told us they went of in a hurry. Well show us where they started their rush so that I'll find their tracks."

Iwyn is secretly enjoying his bad attitude. He used to be calm and gentle. Maybe a bit naive. This whole adventuring thing was really a good decission.

"And since you're not a thief, you won't mind that my friends have a look in your personal quarters?"

Will that make you stop your violent rampage?, he asks? But yes, I will show you that I hide nothing suspicious in my personal quarters if you pay me adequate compensation for hurting my friends - I need them as guards around here, and magical healing is not free! He is still fighting the magically animated vines, but seems to be cooperative now.

As long as you help us, it is only fair to provide compensation. Although you might want to get better guards, those weren't much use defending. Veit said cautiously, hoping to not incite more anger from the bartender.

"You do have a plan, right? I don't think we should trust him just yet," Samihl whispers to Iwyn.

Your gut feeling tells you, that he is right about you finding nothing incriminating in his quarters, but there's still something suspicious about all of this. Like he's hiding something from you.

Iwyn cuts 5' from his 50' hempen rope and approaches the bartender. He does a search on the body, to make sure there are no hidden weapons or items and binds the hands behind the back. The remainig length of the rope is used as a leech, although Veit was thinking of a whip.

With the bartender bound, they make their way back to the inn. Iwyn hisses to Samihl. So far my plan. I really have no clue next.

"Works for me," Samihl replies. "Even if he won't talk, we can use him. Obviously there's something strange going on here."

The elf reluctantly lets you bind him and walks back to the secret door to his room. Search all you want! I haven't stolen anything. And as for healing, 50 gp for each seems reasonable. Clerics don't come by here too oftenm you know! He's clearly pushing it somewhat, but then again, magic aid isn't cheap.

Iwyn senses that something is off, but he can't quite put his finger on it. He searches the private bartender room, looking for clues. He pays close attention to find a visitor log to find out who checked out in a haste.

Searching the room, Iwyn finds such a log. Everything seems to correspond with the elf's explanation. Also of interest is a key board with a key cooresponding to each room, some extra cross bow quarrels, a short sword, two daggers and another smokestick. Apart from that, it's all ordinary, personal stuff.

Iwyn turns to his friends and says (out of hearing range of the innkeeper): "I think we can exclude him from being the thief. After all, who would use lockpicking tools when he has spare keys. Even if it was one of his acolytes, then he could have given them a copy of the key fairly easy".

It's hard to realise that they spend valuable time chasing the wrong clue. But still, things don't add up. Maybe William has found a better clue...

"Now that you mention it, the thief wouldn't have had time to trash the room and find the scrollcase between when I heard them picking the lock and when I went into Veit's room. Maybe whoever did it had the keys and was trying to make it look like they didn't."
Samihl glares at the innkeeper.

I assure you, that no one has used any of your spare keys while you've been staying here, if that's what you're trying to imply. He points at the key board. They're right here, and they've been so the entire time! You all feel convinced he's telling the truth here.

Samihl draws his scimitar and holds it to the innkeeper's throat.
"Are you sure about that?"

I swear it's the truth!, the elf assures you as his face grows a little paler in the proximity of the curved blade.

"Then maybe you can offer a better explanation?"
He keeps the blade at the elf's throat.

"An explanation would be good to get from you," Veit points towards the drawn scimitar "I'm afraid that I can't guarantee your safety in this current situation, but any actual information you have can help us."

Iwyn tries to play the nice guy and questions in a more polite way:

"Tell me, who of these men are skilled with thiefing tools?", he points to the log, "Which of these men can sneak into your room unnoticed?"

If they were robbed wihtout spare key and the artefact was stolen before we found the thiefing tools, then it must be a very skilled thief. Iwyn thinks.

OOC:
I'm asking if there are any rogues on his log.

RebelRogue

Well, do you remember those dice players in the corner? A few of them has been known to... be less than honorable. They're staying not too far from your rooms if I remember correctly... Is it ok, if I check the log?

You think he's telling the truth here, although Iwyn has a feeling it's perhaps not the full truth.

Samihl removes the blade from the innkeepers throat, but keeps it in his hand, and gives the innkeeper a look that tells him he could still slit his throat at any time.
