The small city of Reavin had seen better days. It had been a booming mining town around twenty years ago, but the vein of ore that had been found in the surrounding mountains dried up. Since then the town could do little try and raise itself up to the money and prosperity that it once saw.

Today, the town had a sadness for a different reason though. Today happened to be the wake for the local resident wizard, Graettin. He had died two weeks earlier because of, unknown circumstances. That is all the local clerics would say about the matter. The word murder was on everyone's lips though.

Graettin had passed away over three week ago, but the local clerics knew he had friends all over the land, so they waited on the wake until all of his friends could arrive. The wake was being held outside in the graveyard, just over Graettin's grave, his coffin above it, waiting for the events to finish before it would be slowly lowered to the ground.

It looked like adventurers from every part of the country showed up. People in sandals and snow boots, people in robes and thick armor that shook the ground as they walked, people with sharpened blades and well used bows. Every different kind of person one could imagine seemed to have some connection to this wizard, and wanted to say their goodbyes.

There were some people of note in this large crowd. To a keen eye passing over the crowd these people would seem... if not out of place perhaps simply noteworthy.

A young boy no more than 14 years old, in dark wizards robes in the front. He looks solemn, but he keeps trying to sneak glances up at everyone in the crowd from time to time.

Two gnomes who are identical. They are talking to themselves, and occasionally a chuckle or a sob can be heard from them.

The mayor of Reavin is here along with his wife and two small children. None of them seem particularly sad, in fact the children are fidgety and keep asking if they can go and play in the graveyard.

A dwarf who tried his best to clean the coal from his beard, but it is still noticeable. He fidgets and keeps his head pointed directly at his very expensive shows.

There is a man in the back with a dark cloak. No one can see his face, but whenever he moves, one can catch a glance at his sword on his hilt. It looks sharp, deadly, and as if it were made precisely for him.

Elona, the cleric of Iomedae, gets up in front of the crowd and begins to speak. He shares Graettin's life and where he lived. Speaks kindly of his studies, and how much he helped the town. Spoke of a time for healing and letting go, but sharing a friend's good memories. he speaks as if he too were a kind friend to this man.

"Now," Elona says as he wraps up his sermon, "Is there anyone here who would like to share a few words? Anything at all, a story or maybe some advice Graettin once gave you. Anyone may speak their peace."

The cleric sits down, and people in the crowd begin to look at each other.

Jax Male half-orc in full plate

A half-orc clad in resplendent full plate stands near the back of the assemblage and watches those in attendance. His huge greataxe is nearly as tall as a man and is strapped to his back. A strange scar-like mark covers the left side of his face and eye. Not knowing what to say, nor feeling it is his place to say anything, he remains quiet.

Shar Rendayne (http://www.dndsheets.net/view.php?id=8418)

A male human with shoulder length dark auburn hair and deep grey eyes. He looks as if just recently arrived from the road, his garments are of that of a veteran traveler, certainly worn, but not completely unkempt either. He wears his armor, well fashioned full plate, although some evidence of combat clearly can be seen upon it. Across his shoulders, fastened by a chain, drapes a large black fur cloak of some unknown creature. A pommel of a greatsword juts out off of his right shoulder, resting comfortably on the man's back.

As he slowly lumbers up to the gathering of people attending Graettin's wake, his eyes are cast slightly downward, as if his mind is in some deep reflection of the past... or of deep thoughts... or perhaps a visage not dissimilar to that of guilt. Every so often, during the course of the ceremony, he will look up into the faces of the other folk that have been connected to the wizard in some way as well. In his gloved hands, he seems to be fidgeting absently with some small object.

The emotions of guilt are genuine on Shar's face, as he feels that he wished he could have been there for Graettin more so...or perhaps even been there to perhaps protect him, if foul play seems fairly obvious. He is no fool however, and certainly takes in the scene around him carefully, even as he mourns his friend's death. He remains silent through the coarse of the ceremony, and when Elona finishes the eulogy, Shar will meet the cleric's gaze and nod a simple, yet heartfelt thanks.

The object in his hands is that of the his favorite scrimshaw pipe Graettin made for him, many years ago, and Shar intends to rest that in the wizard's hand or if not able, the crook of the wizards elbow, to send with him on his way to the afterlife.

*** Quick question: Is it here, in the "spoilers" that I ask questions for just you and me to see? Or does everyone see this?

Vaiska entered the graveyard and made her way to the odd assemblage of folk that were attending Graettin's funeral. She slips into the back of the crowd and casually works her way to the front, standing above his coffin. She is undoubtedly human although much of her fair skin is covered in a dark dress, hands gloved in black and face obscured by a veil. A wide brimmed hat is pulled onto her hair, the luscious crimson locks trailing down her back, vibrant streaks of red against her mourning garb. Regardless of her attire, it is clear that she is a strikingly attractive woman, although she isn't dressed to draw attention.

She seems to be speaking something to herself, under her breath, as if reminding herself of what she once knew. From her purse she draws a rose and lets it fall onto the casket. As she turns to dip back into the crowd, you catch the telltale bulge of a knife or two underneath her skirt, just below the hip. She may have been crying before, but now she stands quietly as the rest, hands folded politely in front of her.

"Goodbye, friend."

When she first got into town, Vaiska found relatively inexpensive accommodation for the next few days, and purchased herself something to wear for the wake. She's removed her armor and carries only her spring-sheathed blades hidden on her arms and a pair of daggers on her thigh. Although acting like a lady is out of place for her, in this situation she understands its importance, and will play the part she was raised to play.

Elenna Starward stood in silence among the among the crowd. Her pointed ears, bright azure eyes, and eloquent looks clearly mark her as an elf. Her face shows a solemn expression. On hear is a headband of silver links. Her clothing consists of a blue-white tunic and black trousers with a pair of gloves covering her hands.

She listens attentively to cleric's words, but her senses remain of aware of the people surrounding her. Memories play through her mind. Image and voices of Graettin. She remembers how his appearance changed as he aged. Becoming stronger and wiser as years gone by, but never less kind. Another kind of thought exists but it remained unformed into neither words or image even in her mind. It persisted, yet it remained on the back of her mind for now she is focused on the wake.

When Elona called for someone, she walked toward Graettin's grave. For a short moment, she just stood still looking at the mound.

How?

She turns toward the crowd. Her eyes scan them briefly. Some faces are familiar from her previous visits, some are not.

"Graettin," she begins to speak. Her voice is soft and solemn, yet it is clearly heard by everyone present. "Without doubt is a great person."

Truly you are.

"For each of us, his deeds and words has left a unique meaning."

Is there some people for whom you meant nothing but ill? Possibly. In this strange world, even your seemingly unending kindness can bring ire.

"For myself, he was a source of inspiration. It was him who taught me that there are inexhaustible things to learn in this world and how there are many ways to see things so that you may always find another meaning of it"

What meaning your death may have?

"And then, he was a friend to me. In the truest sense of that word."

She stops for moment before continuing, "The time I had known him was short, according to my people's reckoning."

How I wish there is more.

"Yet, many precious things I have gained from it. I shall remember those times ever."

One good thing of this long life is that I'll be able to preserve memories of my friends longer.

Her sight falls again at the grave. "Rest well, dear friend"

Because you know me. Whatever has happened, I will find the truth of it and make sure to take care of it for you. That's why, rest well. For there will be nothing here you need to worry about.

Inwardly, she smiles as if facing the old wizard. Looking at the grave where he now rest forever, she feels she can imagine him smiling back at her.

Finished, she returns to where she stands before, to wait till the whole ceremony finished.

Eh, I hope the format is fine:smalltongue:

Because it always good to pay attention in a mystery story:

Versatile performace: perform (oratory) check in place of sense motive on the crowd
[roll0]

Perception check for anything unusual:
[roll1]

Knowledge local check to see if Elenna knows something of the mentioned personae:
[roll2]

Plus, Perform (oratory) on the speech. In the honor of Graettin and just because.
[roll3] EDIT: should have put plus+8 on the roll

Since Elenna supposedly has been in Reavin since a day or two before, she should already have a room in an inn. I'll cut 20 GP for upfront payment of a week of a good room and meals.

Neb is nervous, he moves cautiously among the forest of legs, keeping a suspicious eye and a safe distance from the two badgertalkers. He's dressed simply in his cloak and boots, with his axes tucked respectfully in his belt, he's wearing a formal head-dress of squirrel fur.

Neb is uncertain what to do, he's never been to a funeral for these large people before and he's not sure why everyone is so quiet. In his tribe funerals involve drinking large amounts of ooozqu (a beverage of fermented forest mushrooms), wild yodeling, and launching a vicious raid on whatever tribe was responsible for the deceased's death (or on trees, rocks or the ground if the death was by natural causes or if the tribe drank too much ooozqu). However, the last time Neb tried any of his yodeling he was banished from town for a month and he didn't have any idea who to attack!

Cautiously Neb approaches the podium, finding it too tall he simply shimmies his way up and stands on top of it.

"Uhm....hello big folks." Neb waves, "Neb is called Neb, and Graettin was a good friend. He tried to help Neb and did much kindness for me. Neb knows he is hard to be around, Neb's tribe brothers always say 'you horrible person Neb, go away an stop doing that thing to the dog.', they only keep Neb around because Neb is so tall and mighty. But here everyone is big but Graettin doesn't make Neb go away." Neb tears up a bit, and dabs his eyes on a handing squirrel tail, "Neb is sorry Graettin is gone now, but what Neb will always remember about him is how tall he was."

With that Neb hops off the podium, and scurries back into the audience, silently vowing to go into the woods later, yodel and attack a tree for Graettin.

Everyone is moved by Elenna’s speech. A few other people stand up and say something. It is not as elegant or moving as the bard’s words, but they all come from the heart and everyone tries to hold back tears as they speak.

The man in the black robes at the back gets up and walks towards town.

The mayor says nothing, he sits with his family. He is holding his wife as she sobs softly on her husband’s shoulders.

The two gnomes get up and begin to tell a rambling story about Graettin.

They seem to correct each other on details here and there, but the story is pleasant enough. Graettin was, at one time, a treasure hunter. He met the two gnomes deep underground, and they all decided to follow a treasure map. Unfortunately by the time they got to the treasure, someone had found it already. They only found an empty chest and a few scattered ruby fragments on the floor.

Still, it was a grand adventure. And the gnomes never forgot their wizard friend.

Elona then gets up and thanks everyone for attending and sharing. He bows his head for one final prayer. He says there are snacks and drinks inside the temple if people want to stay and share stories. Some people begin to leave, while others linger to say a last goodbye at the coffin, or talk with some friends out here.

“I knew Graettin,” the young boy in wizard’s robes says quietly as he stands up, “He was a mentor, and a good friend of mine. And I know he was murdered. Someone killed him. I don’t know who, I don’t know how, but I know something happened to him. And I will pay a thousand gold to any person who can bring justice to the memory of Graettin! A thousand!”

He seems to scream this last part, shaking in his boots, before he falls back to the bench he was sitting on. Elona goes over to the boy and begins comforting him.

Vaiska

You notice one of the knights that has shown up has an emblem on his shield that looks very familiar. In your home town this was the crest of one of the noble families. The knight is paying his respects, but he seems to look over at you an awful lot.

Elenna

There are rumors flying around everywhere. Some are wild, such as a dragon killed Graettin or he was part of a secret cult that practiced regular sacrifice. The rumor that keeps repeating over and over though, is the night before Graettin’s body was found he and the mayor of the town were seen having a pretty heated argument.

Your perception shows you that, while there are many stages of grief being displayed throughout the crowd, the mayor seems, if anything, bored by the entire event. Even after your motivational speech.

Oh, and with those rolls, if people weren’t crying before, they are now.

Shar

Since you were with Graettin for so long, you know that, since Reavin’s ore deposits dried up the town has slowly gone down hill. In fact the last few years it has become quite a dangerous place to live in, and even Graettin tried not to go anywhere at night if he couldn’t help it.

One of the factions that grew in this town was a gang of half orcs called the Reds, noticeable from their blood red nose rings that they all wear.

You only remember this piece of information because you can see two of these half orcs with red nose rings in the crowd now, plus two more looking on the funeral with great interest about a hundred feet away.

You may not have been with Graettin until the very end, but even you know he never knew anyone from this group, or did any business with them.

Jax

Right before the funeral, one of the acolytes for the local church recognizes your holy symbol. He comes up to you and begins talking, and when he finds out you are here for the funeral, his voice gets low and he looks around nervous to see if anyone else is listening.

He tells you he was with Elona when he examined the body after it was found. There were no marks on it at all. Elona thought it might be magic that killed Graettin, and when he detected magic he did find there was faint necromancy coming from the body. Elona and the rest of the temple know that the wizard was murdered.

You can ask him more questions, but he doesn’t know anything else… and he looks around even more nervous until he walks away from you as fast as he can. You don’t get a chance to talk to Elona as the funeral is about to start. So that’s where you are now.

Neb

Since you were with Graettin close to his death, you would know for the past couple of months he’s been acting a bit off. He hadn’t slept as much, and spent most of his time down in his laboratory. Every once in a while he would go off with no explanation and come back two days later just to do more experiments.

You thought, but weren’t sure, that he had taken on an apprentice. Graettin took great pains to make sure no one knew about the young boy that he was training. You figured it out though, and you also know that he is here at the funeral. He is in the front, the 14 year old in wizard’s robes who just had an emotional breakdown asking for people to find the murderer.

Keeping her hat down, Vaiska moves toward Elona and the still fuming boy. She nods as Elona notices her approach, and Vaiska pauses in front of the pair of grievers. She extends a gloved hand, "I am so sorry," the sorrow on her face is genuine. She takes a knee, so as to be looking up at the apprentice, and speaks directly to him, not as an adult would to a child, but as someone wholly capable of bringing a swift end to those responsible. "Tell me now, why do you think Graettin was murdered?"

Vaiska takes note of the knight, being sure to keep her face away from him at all times. She is planning on tailing him when he leaves the graveyard and finding out where he is staying. She'll be ditching her fine clothes at the soonest possible instant and retrieving her equipment from the hotel. If he does in fact know who she is, she'll be on the run shortly, and doesn't want to worry about leaving things behind.

“He said he would be,” The young boy’s eyes well up with tears. Elona is right beside him, holding his hand. It takes a few moments for the boy's breathing to get back to normal before he can speak again.

“He was researching something in his tower. I don’t know, I wasn’t allowed into his laboratory. He said he needed to be careful. They were after him. He would never say anything else about it though, even when I kept asking. The night before he died he was very exciting. He had found something, and locked himself up in his laboratory. He wouldn’t even come down for dinner.

"The next morning they found him outside in the woods, completely naked without a mark on his body.”

Elona nodded his head. From what he knew of the story, that was all true.

“They won’t let me into his tower to investigate. They say I’m just a little kid who should let it go, but I won’t. I can’t. I have money… please… if you can help in any way, I will make sure you will get paid for your troubles.”

Vaiska
At the moment the knight is sitting where he was. It seems easier to watch you now that you are next to the crying boy.

The group has mostly gone into the temple for the rest of the wake. The only people left outside are the boy in robes, a couple of half orcs, a knight with a crest on his shield, Elona and the rest of you.

Jax listens to the bard's eulogy and his heart stirs. If only I had known about Graettin sooner, he muses to himself. Then when the lad speaks up about murder, Jax snaps to attention.

The half-orc's armor gives away his approach to the group around the boy. When an opportunity to speak presents itself, he speaks in a bellowing voice, "The murderer of Graettin Greatwizard shall be found, young one. Jax of Erastil shall repay the debt owed."

Both the cleric Elona and the young boy in wizard's robes look up at the group of adventurers surrounding them. It looked as though perhaps Graettin's death may yet be avenged.

The boy gave a slow smile and wiped away some tears.

"I'll answer any questions you have."

Elona sat next to the boy and nodded at the rest of the group.

"I do recall a few rumors being spread around myself. Not sure how much I know, but if you ask I will try to get an answer for you. I hope you can find what happened and put this whole thing to rest."

Neb clambers onto a bench next to the boy so he's merely eye-to-chest of most everyone around, "Murder you say, murder is no good at all. Graettin should have let Neb know, and Neb would have removed the knees from anyone responsible. Now Neb will find them and take all their joints!" Neb pats the boy's shoulder uncertainly (seeing someone taller than him weeping is new and uncomfortable), "Neb could not save Graettin but Neb will avenge him and protect what he left. You can be Neb's apprentice now, Neb does not know magic but Neb can show you how to kill two birds using another bird. Then you have three birds."

Shar Rendayne (http://www.dndsheets.net/view.php?id=8418)

Shar waits until most of the folks disperse and then moves up to the coffin. His head lowered, he glances at the wizard's face. "Strange, isnt it" Shar absently thinks to himself, "even now, it looks as though you are merely sleeping, my old friend." Shar takes the valued pipe and places it into Graettin's hand, and closes the hand back over the pipe, almost reassuringly. "You will be missed, Old Fox.... I shall never forget you." his voice now but a soft whisper And if these rumors I hear whispered are true, your death shall be avenged, my friend...by Calistra's undying vengeance, I swear!
After a few minutes of standing there by the coffin, Shar eventually composes himself briefly, then turns to hear the conversations between the boy apprentice and the others still remaining.

For ElennaOne person certainly stands out in Shar's mind...the bard Elenna. He had met her some winters ago (perhaps 6?) when he was residing at Graettin's for that brief period in his life. The three of them enjoyed many a night together, each one exchanging some grand tale or another, the laughter and merriment sometimes drifting to near dawn. And her voice, by the gods! It oft times could seem to sing the soul back into a banshee, so stirring and moving it was. Her presence here now is a great comfort.
Shar moves up to the small group gathered around the boy, "Forgive this brief intrusion" Shar says as he faces the bard fully, "Good Lady Elenna, it is truly a boon to see you here in Reavin once again, but alas, amidst dire days.

The young boy smiles, and even laughs aloud when he hears the halfling want him to be an apprentice.

"I would very much like that. I don't know how to kill birds with anything but magic. It might be good to know how to do it your way."

He enjoys hearing such rough words coming from such a small and friendly person.

"My name is Temon. I was the one who found Graettin. I saw him the morning after the murder when I went out to fetch water for breakfast. He was lying just beyond his tower, completely naked."

Temon thinks about it for a second. He didn't see anything strange around the body. No marks on his person or in the surrounding area.

"I can take you to his tower, but we can't go inside. The mayor had it locked up until they can find a will. Apparently they are having a hard time finding it."

Elona picks up the story, "The boy came into town and I sent my acolytes to pick up the body. It had no marks that I could find. I assumed he was murdered by magical means, and a simple detect magic confirmed my suspicions. There was a faint necromantic aura on the body."

Elona realized it was not much. He had little to go on, and was not any sort of investigator himself. He had too many church obligations to do anything more than preserve the body and wait for friends and family to come.

"That is all I know as well."

Temon nodded, looking back at Neb, "You will avenge him, won't you?"

Vaiska quickly found herself surrounded by strangers, all different, but together united through his death. In her mind, she repeats what she knows of them, as if to remember them better. "The bard from before, Ellena; a fighter of some sort, Shar; a berserking half-squat, Neb; and Jax, a half-orc holy man. All of these people seem to be capable," she looks at each one in detail, gauging their skill. "We may get to the truth of this yet," she tosses a glance at the knight that's been eying her, "if I can loose my tail first."

After Elona finishes, she takes a moment to gather her speech before stepping forward. "Excuse me, I have failed to introduce myself before now. I am Vaiska, and I too knew Graettin as well, if only for a short time," she glances at the boy, "and if what you say about his death is true, then I'll look into it until the end." She turns to address everyone gathered, "Those of you that knew him as I did know that he did not deserve such a despicable fate -- and if you agree with me then we should join forces. If there is a plot to uncover, it's best done together. This tower bears further investigation, and I'd bet that what he was working on recently is connected to his murder. So friends, who is with me?"

Hopefully the people gathered would agree to this partnership, giving Vaiska the distraction she would need to slip away as they left the graveyard. Maybe then she could see what this tin can peeping tom was up to, and give him a piece of her mind. Or her blade.

"Neb will find those responsible and smite their puny heads! Neb will descend on them like Riki-Tik the great flying squirrel of vengeance himself!" To punctuate his point Neb hurls a throwing axe over the heads of the small crowd, planting it deep into the side of a tree. Immediately regretting losing his axe Neb hurries over to the tree and yanks furiously at the deeply embedded axe, continuing his tirade against the theoretical murderers, "Neb...*grunt*...will smite! *huff* Neb's fury is terrible -hnrgh- to behold!"

Finally pulling the axe free, falling to the ground and scrambling back over to the group, he buffs out his tiny chest and declares "Among Neb's people, Neb is a great hunter!" (Neb was primarily used to flush prey from hiding by sending him screaming in the opposite direction of the actual hunting party) "Show Neb where Graettin was found and Neb will find any signs of nasty-murder-crooks!"

Before rushing off to Graettin's tower Neb's brow furrows and his head aches, a sure sign of a very rare thing indeed...Neb had an idea. "Maybe...maybe someone who knew Graettin might know who would want to murder his nice old head...Lots of people who know Graettin are around here...maybe while Neb is hunting them with his nose and his eyes, someone else could hunt with their words and ears. Neb is no good with questions...everyone looks at him weird." Neb spins and points his finger at the hulking half-orc "You! you look friendly."

As an outsider among those who seem familiar to each other, Jax continues to watch and listen. He is accustomed to such things when on the hunt. He has found that it is better to remain quiet and thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.

When the talk of the necromantic magic is mentioned again, Jax ponders the implications behind an evil afoot. He watches as Neb demonstrates his hunting skills and is a bit surprised by his comment regarding him as friendly. When he finds his tongue, he understand Neb's request and states, "Neb Axe-hunter wishes to know who would gain from Graettin Greatwizard's death? Did Graettin Greatwizard have enemies?"

Elenna can't help not to feel slightly amused by the halfling behavior. Not that she disregard him. He is clearly sincere and even if his act, looks childish that was no sign of incompetence. She took a look again at everyone who gathers there.

Quite an interesting friends you have. Just as always, eh Graettin

"Certainly I will help, as I has said before." On Neb's and Jax's inquiry, she nods. Though the question is really about who can do it than who want to. Shar smiles at the halfling's counsel, and nods in agreement. "Yes, I am in agreement that questions must be asked, little friend...and answered in full." Shar then turns to face the half-orc named Jax, "And knowing who would benefit with Graettin's death will certainly help us stay on the proper path in finding clues to his murder." Shar then glances back towards the small city of Reavin in the distance. "But I must warn you all, the city of Reavin is not what it once was. Since the ore deposits have dried up, Reavin has unfortunately changed, and not for the better. It has grown more and more desperate and dangerous upon every return journey I made when visiting Graettin. I even recall him mentioning one evening on how he would avoid traversing about during the late hours of darkness, as many a'dangerous folk now wander the city in search of an easy mark or prey." He reaches down to adjust a strap on his boot and continues. "In fact," his voice becoming lower "One such group of predators that were growing in power in Reavin were a gang of Half-Orcs known only as the 'Reds', if I recall correctly. And now with saying that” Shar seems thoughtful a moment, “I wonder as to the reason of their presence during Graettin's wake, as the good wizard would never associate with scum such as those. And yet, I espied four of them looking upon the ceremony with particular interest. Perhaps it is another lead we may need alookin' into." Shar then fixes his grey gaze upon Vaiska. "I agree with your sound counsel, m'lady...if there is a plot to uncover...it is truly best done together. And I agree the tower would make an excellent start," Shar then reaches into a leather pouch on his belt and produces a small wad of chewing tobacco, which he promptly places into his mouth. "and if our other boon companions are in similar agreement, I suggest we go there post-haste.” Shar then moves over to his steed Tempest, and untethers her from a nearby pine tree, checking her over quickly before planning on setting out.

Vaiska's pleased with the turn of events, and how everyone has agreed to investigate this. "Graettin, you would be impressed." As her new companions begin to head out, she comments casually, "I will need to change into something more fitting after I run a quick errand, shall we all meet up at the Sledgehammer in say, 30 minutes? That should give each of us enough time to get any personal affairs in order," she gives a light chuckle and looks over herself, "and change, in my case, before heading out to the tower."

I fabricated the existence of the Sledgehammer, the town's most used bar and a common landmark that everyone should be able to find. I'm thinking it has a heavy mining feel and a majority of Reavin's workers find drink there on a nightly basis.

By this time you are all now alone next to Graettin’s coffin. Temon and Elona are here with you, but that is all. The half orcs have either left or gone inside with the rest of the group. The knight lingered around, listening until he felt like he had heard enough, and then wandered towards the temple as well.

Vaiska

Although, you can still see him outside with a small group, his interest still in your direction.

Elona seems pleased that you are all about to head out and search for clues, but his face completely changes when you speak of the mayor. He grips the young boy’s hand harder than usual, his knuckles going white.

“No…” He says, his tone flat, “I know nothing about that. Mayor Bergen is pretty private with his dealings.”

Elenna

Yeah… he’s lying.

Temon gets up from his seat, “I want to thank you all for taking this on. Believe me when I tell you I am thankful for all of you. Graettin had some pretty amazing friends. I am staying at the Sledgehammer for now. If you need anything, you can find me there. For now, I should go and say thank you to all the other guests who have arrived. If you will excuse me.”

It seems that, after his outrage and breakdown, the young boy looks a lot better now. Perhaps it was just something that needed to get out of his system, and now he can feel somewhat normal again.

The Sledgehammer (thank you for that name… I am horrible with names) is in the better part of town. When Reavin was popular, it used to be the watering hole for the town. Since its demise, most of those who come to the Sledgehammer are merchants wandering through for trade, and adventurers such as yourself.

There is a large wooden sledgehammer rising up from the front of the building, and it is very easy to find.

And even though it’s the most popular tavern in town, even on good nights there usually isn’t more than half a dozen people there at any given time. Even one of the few places that is profitable in this town has seen better days.

The owner of the Sledgehammer is a dwarf with a light scar running down his cheek. He’s pretty gruff until he’s had a few drinks, and then he will share all sorts of random adventuring/mining stories he’s had throughout his long life.

He is a tall dwarf, pushing 5 feet. He has a dark scraggly beard that’s braided, and a balding head. He walks with a bit of a limp.

He was here for the funeral as well, and shed a small tear when Elenna made her speech.

Shar returns with his steed, and moves back to the group and as he attempts to adjust Tempest's bridle, calls out to Elenna for some quick assistance.

For Elenna, whispered to her in the Elven tongue as he continues adjusting the bridle:
"Forgive my apparent haste, my friend, but that was more for the benefit of our 'audience' than anything else." *Shar turns his head away and spits out a stream of tobacco juice* "I also intend to dig a bit deeper while we have the opportunity. Particularly with the apprentice Temon, who I may confront later when he is alone in the Sledgehammer. Whatever information we can get before exploring the tower will, of course, be useful... and as the Sages often quip..." *Shar smiles and winks* "...forewarned is forearmed."

He first stops off at city's stables to see if the usual stable hand is there, and will leave the usual additional incentive (1 gold) to make sure extra attention is given to Tempest. "He had a rough past few days of riding, Titch" Shar looks about casually, as he reaches into a pocket in the edge of his cloak and continues "make sure he's well taken care of, and you shall profit from it." As Shar subtly slips the gold piece into the young man's palm, he nods a quick farewell and walks on over to the 'Sledgehammer'.

On his way over to the tavern, Shar will make a point to stop over at the town's market to briefly peruse some wares. Everyone seems to go different directions. It is up to you who you want to go with. If it’s Neb, you can read his spoiler. If you want to wait at the Sledgehammer, read Shar’s spoiler.

Neb

North of town you go through the familiar road that takes you to the Wizard’s tower. This road used to go up to the mines in some of the mountains further north, but since the mining has all but gone in this town it is now rarely used.

A path cuts from the main road into a beautiful garden. Graettin loved to occupy himself with many things, and having a nice garden was one of them. You search through some of the rose bushes and petunia plants, but don’t spot anything out of the ordinary.

There are fresh tracks on the path though. This is odd. It has been 3 weeks since the wizard passed away, and if the apprentice is living in town, there should be no fresh tracks at all. You soon see the problem though.

After you pass through the garden there is a small clearing that leads up to Graettin’s wizard tower. Here you can see there are two city watch guards sitting next to the door. One has a crossbow and the other a short sword. You recognize both of them.

Edgar and Belinda, both human. They are not the smartest of watch guards, and usually get the worst of guarding duties. In fact, as you emerge from the garden you notice that Belinda is sleeping softly and Edgar seems to be preoccupied with a butterfly.

Edgar finally does see you though, “Halt… who goes there?”

He raises up the crossbow, sees that there’s no bolt in it and then frantically scrambles back up the hill to where his quiver is. He hits Belinda in the arm to wake her up.

Belinda falls over her chair, looking down at you, and tries to get her short sword out of her scabbard, but it gets stuck on something. Although, after a few seconds she stops as she stands up.

“Oh… it’s Neb!”

Edgar finds his quiver, but drops it as soon as he heard the name, “Neb? Wow. Good to see you back here… although, sorry it’s under such bad circumstances. It was a shock to us all when they found the wizard.”

You also see that on the wooden door of the wizard’s tower there is a very large lock.

“We’re in charge of making sure no one gets inside of Graettin’s tower and starts stealing stuff. Mayor put us here as a special assignment. Although I don’t know why… ain’t been no one up except us for weeks.”

That is odd though. The fresh tracks you found showed a lot more than just two people.

“What can we do for you Neb?”

Vaiska

The knight notices you right away. He walks forward towards you as soon as you wave to him. You see that his full plate that he wears has never seen a battle. It’s also been recently cleaned and shines very brightly.

Cellan is a tall gangly man, but it’s hard to tell in the armor he’s wearing. He has curly blonde hair and piercing blue eyes that look bored half of the time.
There is a longsword at his side and a shield which he half carries and half drags. It doesn’t look like he’s very proficient in either of them.

“It’s been a long time Vaiska. You know your parents are worried about you.”

He was trying to make small talk, but the way he wiggles his nose when he speaks about your parents makes it fairly obvious of what he thinks of you and what you did.

“It took quite a bit of money to track you down. I’m happy to see we finally get to meet. I was hoping we weren’t going to have this conversation at some lowly tavern with commoners walking all over the place.”

This is a man who rarely, if ever, sees commoners.

“So… what do I need to do to bring you back home with me? Is it money? I brought a lot with me… you can pay off your gambling debts or whatever it is you’ve been doing with these people and we can be on our way.”

Elenna

Your trip to the smith is uneventful. There is a short dwarf covered in soot that smiles and shows you his collection. The daggers he has on display look simple but effective.

You arrive back at the Sledgehammer. There are only two people in the common area, a middle aged woman who is drinking what looks like beer, and the dark robed stranger you remember from the funeral. He is sitting by the fire smoking from a pipe.

The dwarf owner from behind the bar asks if you want anything to drink.

Shar arrives here a little after you do.

Shar

On your way through the market place you do think you notice a half orc with a red nose ring. You spot him several times, enough to make you think you are being followed.

By the time you leave the market and take the road less traveled, you do not see him anymore. It’s up to you if you think he’s just really clever at following you, or it was just your imagination about the whole thing.

You arrive back at the Sledgehammer. There are three people in the common area, a middle aged woman who is drinking what looks like beer, and the dark robed stranger you remember from the funeral. He is sitting by the fire

The half-orc follows Neb. Though small in stature, it is evident to the half-orc that this one has the heart twice the size of a man and the penchant for being dangerprone. He doesn't intrude, and keeps a safe distance. Jax doesn't hide his intentions, either.

He remains in the garden for some time, enjoying the lush flowers. The sound of alarm from the guard brings him around quickly. Keeping low, he moves ahead and surveys the scene in case Neb needs assistance.

"Ho big folks," Neb wanders over. "Neb is here for justice! Neb is glad to see Edgar and Belinda, because Neb knows they are good pals of Justice and of Neb! Edgar, Belinda and Neb! Together we shall stand and face the evil killers, dark wizards and the huge monsters with big pointy teeth who no doubt lie in wait all around." Neb hoots and tosses one axe in the air, catching it and waving his arms in anticipation, "Even Neb would be scared, but not with good chums Belinda and Edgar to stand by his side against the pointy fangs of evil! But for now, Neb is going over there. Looking for clues. Let Neb know if you see anything big and pointy." Following this, Neb will casually continue searching about for any further clues.

Belinda smiles a very friendly but spacey smile. She never understood half of the things that Neb said, but the things she did hear seemed pleasant enough. She hoped that they found whatever it was they were looking for.

"Big and pointy?" Edgar had a confused look wash over his face, "You mean like a bunch of half orcs?"

Belinda gave him a cross look.

Edgar shrugged, "What? I didn't wake you cause our orders were to protect the tower... they weren't interested in the tower. They just wanted to know where the wizard died."

Edgar motioned for everyone to follow him. He took them around to the back of the tower. Here there is a small clearing that ends in a hedge. This hedge has one clear cut trail opening up into a meadow. Anyone who has lived here with Graettin knows that on the other side of this meadow is a babbling brook that the wizard used for water.

"They found his body in that meadow somewhere. I told the orcs that and they rushed over. There were 5 of them, I think. They arrived about ten minutes before you did."

Now that Edgar thought about it, maybe he shouldn't have told the half orcs where the wizard was found.

From where you are standing you can see one half orc just behind the hedges. He appears to be searching for something. You can also hear muffled voices.

The voices are in orc. Neb, they sound like guttural gibberish to you.

Jax

The best you can hear are bits and phrases:

"... keep searching..."
"get rid of..."
"... nothing left to..."
"He'll want to know..."

You guys are about 80 feet away from the meadow and the half orc that you can barely see. He has not noticed you yet.

What do you do?

Elenna

The dwarf behind the counter makes a growling sound in his throat and begins searching through his inventory. After the klinking and moving of many bottles, he brings out a small jug with the word SPICE written in charcoal across the front.

"Knew I had it somewhere," He smiles as he pours it out.

A young barmaid wipes a tired lock of hair away from her face as she comes over to your table and sets down your mug of spiced wine.

This what Cellan and the others had never understood, it was never a question of money, and it was a question of trying to find what made her happy. It was clear she wouldn’t need to kill him; she’d just need to convince him to leave her in peace.

She smiles kindly at him, “Oh Cellan,” she rubs her hand along his arm, before taking it away. They weren’t like that, not anymore.

“I can’t go back Cellan, not now, not ever. There’s no debt, there’s no money owed; I am free now, and I’m never going back. I am sorry that you had to spend so much to track me down, but that should make it clear that I did not want to be found. If you truly have a large sum of coin, I'd advise you to take it with you and go -- Reavin is no place for you.”

She takes a step back, motioning for him to clear her path, “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a murder to solve.”

The touch seems to affect Cellan, and the hardened exterior he was trying to keep up melts away, but only for a second. He stiffens, as if a cold wind came up from behind him as he turns to walk away.

As Cellan walks away, Vaiska lets herself sink momentarily into her memory, to the one summer night they shared. "No, that isn't my life anymore." Cellan fades into the distance behind her as she walks back into town.

She slips into her hotel and hurriedly changes her clothes, tossing the dress into a mess in the corner. It reminds her of an earlier time, where she was forced to wear such finery on a daily basis. She hates that dress now. After tightening the last buckles on her boots and armor, she grabs her sword belt from the table and heads out.

Vaiska enters the Sledgehammer through the main door. She's changed from the mourning garb to something far better suited to the task at hand. A pair of elegantly crafted swords hang off her hips, a dagger sheathed on each boot and another across her chest. Over her mobile, form-fitted leaf armor (tinted brown), she wears a dark brown over coat. Covering her long, full, red hair is a wide brimmed black hat, often pulled down to hide her face, as it was before in the graveyard.

She walks up to her companions that have already gathered. "Hello again, were you waiting long?"

Vaiska is now equipped with everything on her character sheet as normal.

As he turns to leave, he quickly adds "It is a boon to see you are doing well and in good health, my old friend" Shar moves to the corner table and joins Elenna, sitting so he has a decent view of the entrance. "Friendly talk?" Edgar knew enough about Neb to know there was going to be trouble. He even grimaced when he saw the halfling take out both of his axes. He grabbed Belinda's hand and took here away from the scene. They had a job to do, protect the tower. It seemed like a good excuse as any to get away from whatever was about to happen.

Jax, you try to silence your armor as you walk down the hedge, but there is a distinct sound of metal clanking against metal that is simply too loud to ignore.

By the time you get close enough to hear more than snippets of what's going on, this is what you hear:

"Sounds like one of those guards coming over."

"Just go scare them off. We're almost done here."

"Whatever."

That is when the half orc emerges from the break in the hedge, crossbow drawn but aimed at the ground. He is tall, with simple clothing that has seen better days and has a red nose ring.

"Oh..." He stares at the two of you, then yells back to the others in orc:

"It's two new ones. Must be replacements."

"What do I care? Do your job!"

"Listen," His common is almost as gruff as his orcish, "Why don't you go back to your silly little tower and keep it from falling down or something. We're almost done here."

Neb

Since you are closer to the break, (about 20 feet away from the half orc with a crossbow) you can clearly see two more half orcs searching through part of the meadow. You recognize one of them as a half orc that was at the funeral. They have the same rough exterior, ripped clothing and red nose rings as their friend.

One of them kneels down, spotted something, and then steps away as he takes out a vial and throws it to the ground. There is a small explosion as a 3x3 foot section of the meadow goes up in flames.

Seems like they are throwing down alchemist's fire.

There is one particular spot in the middle of the meadow that looks very charred over.

You only see 2 half orcs in the meadow searching, but you can hear two others that must be somewhere else working in a similar fashion.

Jax, you are 40 feet away from the half orc that you see, you hear the small explosions happening in the meadow... easy to guess alchemist's fire.

Neb, you are 20 feet away from the half orc. You see two other half orcs, and hear two more.

Darius, I asked for an initiative roll, but never got one from you. Considering what’s about to happen you might want to roll one.

Jax and Neb

The half orc can’t help but smile at your request, revealing his sharp yellowed teeth. He was hoping to get a little fun from all of this. He had been a little sad the guards at the watch tower didn’t put up any fight at all. This was much better.

“Of course, Jax of Erastil. How silly of me. We’ll tell you what’s going on.”
He calls out behind you, “ Boys! Jax of Erastil here wants to know what we’re searching for! I need help in telling him.”

One of the half orcs laughs at that, but they all start moving towards your location. Now you can easily see all 5 half orcs. Two of them pull out greatswords, one a great axe. The final half orc is wearing dark robes and carrying a shield. He has a vial in his hand.

“Jax of Erastil?” The robed half orc in the back has a sneer on his face as if he'd just eaten bad mutton, “Interesting... you don’t look like a watch guard.”

Everyone is within charging distance of you except the robed half orc in the back.

“Make this quick… I want to get back home before we have any more problems.”

The half orcs let out a ferocious howl, and run towards you.

And this will be where initiative begins.

Neb. The half orc with the crossbow is the only one who has seen you yet. The others haven’t noticed you.

The half orcs will go first, unless Darius rolls very well on his initiative.

Sledgehammer

The robed stranger looks up at you. He smiles as he takes off the hood, revealing a human male in his sixties or so. He has a kind face, light blue eyes and silvery hair pulled back into a pony tail.

His eyes light up when he sees the leaf you bring out, “Rustic Tenabar? It’s been a few years since I have tried any of that. Do you mind?”

“I saw you at the funeral, didn’t I? Graettin. There were a lot of people there I did not recognize. It seems as if Graettin lived a life filled with friends and adventures. I wish I could have had such a life as he did.”

You notice his calloused hands and a small scar running across his cheek. He might not have had as many adventures as Graettin, but it looks as if he’s seen his fair share of experiences.

“My name is Kelban. I am a wizard from the Shatterspun mountains. It is a pleasure to meet you, good Sir. Please… sit and let’s talk. I imagine you have a few good stories to tell about an old friend.”

Neb remembers when fighting kobold raiders it wasn't the kobolds dressed in chainmail and hefting spears and swords who were the worst, it was the ones in dresses who threw fire and lightning. Realizing that most of the orcs don't know he's there Neb will charge past, axes wide for the one in black.

Neb will charge the robed orcs, since the half-orcs who failed to see him are flat-footed to him he should avoid any attacks of opportunity, assuming any are still in the way after they charge jax. He'll attack the robed one, activating his rage.

Shatterspun Mountains are to the far east. It is a huge mountain range that runs down the length of the entire continent. They are known for being particularly rough, not only cause of the landscape but it is home to many a nasty species such as: goblins, kobolds, bugbears, owlbears, dragons and even worse things underground.

There are only two kinds of people who have ever adventured to the Shatterspun Mountains.
1. Incredibly stupid people.
2. Incredibly smart people.

And, because of that, there are only two kinds of people who have ever come back from the Shatterspun Mountains.
1. Incredibly resourceful people.
2. Incredibly dead people.

As for the name Kelban, you have heard of his name from time to time. His name usually comes up when Graettin does. They apprenticed under the same wizard growing up, and became either… friends or rivals depending on who is telling you the story.

Graettin never really talked about him. However, from this day alone there are a lot of things about Graettin’s life you just did not know. So, take that however you will.

Shar sits down, curiously eyeing the older man as he slides his pouch of pipe weed across the table to Kelban "I do not mind at at all...indeed, take as much as you wish. Although good pipe weed may be a challenge at times to acquire, I find potential friends in difficult days much harder to come by" Shar chuckles as continues sizing up the man. *Draws another drag from his pipe before continuing* "and I noticed you as well, Kelban. My name is Shar, and I am indeed friends with Graettin. And as for stories, perhaps I do have a tale or two I may recount, if not but to ease the grief that still sits in mine heart." Shar begins to tell of how the two first met, in this very bar, in fact. As his eyes focus on the glowing embers of the fire near them, the young warrior begins to recall his dear friend...slowly at first, but then the words flow out of Shar more and more, like blood from a grievous wound. He goes on to tell of past deeds, both simple and great, that he shared with his late friend. Without realizing it, Shar's vision blurs some, and he absently wipes the tears that began to form. "Forgive me friend...I do not even know you, yet I find myself rambling on like my ole' Nan, Gods rest her soul." Shar blinks a moment as if coming out of a spell, and then shoots a sidelong glance towards Kelhben. Still unsure of what to make of him, Shar reaches down and pulls a finishing draught of his ale. Strange...I never let my guard down like that. Step softly here, Shar…step softly. You mustn’t forget your purpose here "Perhaps you would honor me with a bit on how you knew Graettin as well, if you would indulge me." Without waiting for a reply Shar gestures to the barmaid, and orders a second round of autumn stout.

Elenna and Vaiska

Two doors down from the Sledgehammer is a simple two story building with fresh pine walls and crude windows. It looks very out of place next to the old and tired buildings surrounding it.

There is a hanging sign that rocks back and forth in the faint wind that says, "MAYOR" in a fancy calligraphy. It looks like it was just done.

Inside there is a reception area with a very large desk. There is a halfling with fiery red hair that is wandering around back and forth between this desk and the back wall covered in various books, scrolls, writing instruments and candles.

He gives a small jump when he notices the both of you, and then sits back at his desk.

"I'm sorry, the mayor is very busy today... he won't be seeing anyone. You can make an appointment to come back-"

As he is saying this a door opens up behind him and Bergen peeks his head out. Bergen is short with a barrel chest and shifty chipmunk eyes. He looks like if he grew a beard he would look like a dwarf.

"Do you have the..." His eyes go to the both of you, and he stops speaking immediately, "Hello, yes, what can I do for you?"

Shar

The old man listens to your story with great interest. He sits there quietly, smoking from his pipe and nodding at the tale told.

"You should have been a bard," Kelban says as he pulls out his own leather pouch of pipeweed. He fills up his pipe, offering some of the leaf to you. It is Frostwood, a gray sharp leaf that looks similar to holly.

"Graettin and I go way back. We apprenticed as young boys under the same wizard. He was a year behind me, but the way he studied and practiced you never would have known..."

And Kelban spins his own tale. Two boys growing up as rivals, eventually becoming friends. They learned many things together, not just of magic but heartbreak and loss, courage and determination. His tale isn't as grand as yours, but he tells it as an old man looking back at the fondest of memories.

"We grew apart, as friends sometimes do. I went east and he came west to this place. We still kept in touch from time to time with magic, but as the years went on that was less frequent. Until a few months ago."

The old man searched through his satchel until he found a small scrolled up piece of paper, "He visited me once more and gave me this."

The words on the top of the scroll as easily identified as Graettin's, "The last Will and Testament of Graettin Eddinson, Guild Initiate of the Talon's Keep."

"He said he was researching something very dangerous. He would not go further into it however. But he promised me if anything happened to him, that I would contact all of his friends and make sure his will was carried out."

Neb and Jax

The robed half orc screams out in pain as the halfling's axe cuts into his side. Everyone can hear the clink of metal underneath the robes. The robed half orc withdraws from Neb, growling at the others to attack.

Two half orcs go after the Neb, one wielding a greataxe, the other a greatsword.

The half orc swings his greatsword high in the sky, but as he slices down it bounces off your armor.

The great axe has more success as it comes down on your shoulder.

*Neb takes 7 points of damage.*

The third half orc charges at Jax.

The half orc with the crossbow drops it and grabs a morningstar from his side. He advances on Jax as well.

The charging half orc slices at you with his greatsword. He hits you square in the chest.

*Jax takes 10 points of damage.*

The wielding morningstar half orc flails his weapon wildly, giving you little more than a nice breeze.

"Kill them!!" You can hear the robed half orc growling as he holds his side.

Shar taps his pipe in the ash-cup briefly, thanks Kelben for the Frostwood with a silent nod and smile, then adds some of the old man's leaf into his pipe, giving it a few drags to kindle the tobacco. Mmm...quite tasty, this Frostwood. Almost similar to mint leaves in flavor... He listens silently to Kelben as he begins speaking, using his mind's eye to envision yet another life Graettin has touched, and the deeds the two shared. Shar smiles wistfully during points of the old man's telling, as if he himself were there...sharing in the two old friends past lives and adventures. When Kelben finishes, and withdraws the apparent will of Graettin, Shar's eyes steel a bit. He looks into the eyes of Kelben for a moment longer, as if deciding whether or not to go on, and then seemingly makes his decision. Leaning forward to the wizard, Shar speaks in a low whisper: I'll have you know, there are those who feel Graettin was brought low through foul play. And I count myself as one of them.Shar glances a bit around before continuing, "And as for his will being carried out" Shar says as he glances down at the rolled scroll parchment "You may count me, as well as a few other good souls here with me, as his true friends. And if murder is truly the source of my friends demise," Shars eyes suddenly light up as if steel fire was ablaze from deep within, "rest assured, there will be much more carried out than simply his last will and testament. Half orc strikes you, but the greatsword bounces off your shoulder.

The half orc laughs at your little display of weaponry, until the first axe digs into his shoulder. He screams when the second axe hits him in the other shoulder. It looks as if you've created a little symmetry... of PAIN!

Despite your vast array of knowledge, you do not recognize the Talon's Keep as any sort of guild, group, gang, or affiliation of any kind. You've never heard of it before just now.

Your sense motive and your gut have the same reaction, this guy is on the up and up as far as you can tell.

At best there may have been some times in his ramblings where he wanted to say something more, but stopped himself... but that could easily have been an old man catching himself rambling and trying to stay on track.

Kelban can not help but give a soft smile when he hears the way you speak so passionately about his old friend. It is times like these when he wished he did not have the disease of age running through his bones. He imagined if he were a mere ten years younger he might be out with your group, trying to find whoever had done this himself.

"The will says as much," Kelban took a small look around the tavern and then slips the parchment back into his satchel. He fumbles through the pack and grabs a second piece of paper, this one much smaller.

"Whatever he was looking into, there were people trying to oppose him. Have you ever heard of a gang running around this town known as the 'Reds?' The will mentions them as one group."

Kelban refills his pipe, his hands slow and methodical with the frostwood. He takes a long drag, staring into the depends embers of the fire before he continues.

"I must confess I know of you, Shar. The will speaks of you too. And a few other friends that Graettin had. I need to speak with them all."

He hands you the smaller piece of paper. There are six names on the paper, scribbled in what looks like Kelban's own handwriting.

Shar, Elenna, Vaiska, Neb, Jax, Fayle.

"I recognized some of the names, but not all of them. The will mentions each of them specifically. Graettin had... last words for all of them in his will. I was hoping, since you seem to know so much about him, you could help me find these others."

Vaiska and Elenna

The mayor eyes the both of you up and down with a less than noble glance at each of you, before nodding his head and opening the door to his office.

"We gotta make it quick. I'm about to head over to Elson's market and see if I can settle some dispute over some venison. You can not believe them down there. I swear some days I think I am little more than a den mother to these people."

His office is slightly smaller than the reception area outside. There is a small ledger desk in the corner with a chair, and a simple wooden bench along the far wall. Other than this furniture, the room is bare.

Bergen quickly begins covering up papers on the desk, but not before you read a heading on one of them that says, "MINING PROSPECTS."

"Sit... sit," He eases himself into his own relaxed chair and stares at each of you.

"I saw you both at the funeral... so let's make this quick. Yes, I am sorry he's dead... no I didn't kill him. And no, you can't go into his tower."

Bergen has a wide smile on his face as if he had just done something very clever. You both imagine this is the kind of person who doesn't get clever ideas all that often.

"So... unless you want to make a rather generous donation to my re-election efforts, I don't think we have anything more to talk about."

Kelban follows the young man’s glance around the room. The only person in here is the gruff dwarf who is cleaning out a mug. He seems to be half paying attention to your conversation. He is, after all, a bartender. Being nosy is his job.

“Perhaps up in my room,” He says, “You are right about being cautious. If there is some conspiracy about the town involving our friend’s death, then everyone could be suspect. I can put up a ward in my room to prevent any sort of scrying. Then we should be able to talk in private.”

The old man eased onto his feet. He finished with his pipe and put it in one of his pockets.

“Find whoever you can and come up to my room. Number 4. I will be waiting. Thank you for all of your help, Shar. Graettin would have been proud.”

He offers the man a firm handshake and then slowly walks towards the rooms.

Elenna and Vaiska

The mayor frowns at the question. He knew there would be people who wanted to poke around in the wizard’s affairs after this funeral. The fool wizard knew too many adventurers for his own good. Bergen will be quite pleased once these strangers have left his town in peace.

“At the moment the wizard’s tower belongs to the city. There was no will left for the wizard, and no next of kin that we know of. Unless someone claims to be some sort of heir, the tower and everything in it belong to me… I mean… to the city.”

Bergen curses himself at his little slip up. He quickly tries to slick his hair back and adjust his clothes. When he looks back up at the both of you, his small eyes are darting around the room.

Elenna and Vaiska

I know you both want a sense motive. So here you go. Something is not right here at all. There is some other reason for him keeping that wizard's tower locked up.

“I am sorry your friend passed away, but there’s nothing in that tower that’ll help you. If you want to play 'detective' I’m afraid you’re going to have to do it somewhere else. Like I said, I am extremely busy.”

Having dealt with many a scoundrel in her day, Vaiska knew of a few ways of getting people to talk without speaking, so she makes it a point to interject: "If you want we could just use the key and head up ourselves, where might the key be?" The real trick was to read Bergen when she mentioned the location of the key, to see if he glanced at a drawer or held his coat pocket tighter. Eventhough it maybe futile anyway, Elenna decide at least to try once again talking the mayor to sense. "Major Bergen, right now there may be a powerful necromancer wandering around Reavin for gods what kind of evil purpose. Are you just going to let it be?

"You know about Graettin's fame. Right now there is already a lot of strange rumors abound about his death. If the murderer kill again, they sure would not look favorably to your ability to keep them secure. And can you keep them secure for that matter? From someone capable to murder a great wizard like Graettin?

"Look, we are not looking Graettin's wealth. What we want is justice for our friend's death. And we would like you cooperation in this matter." Not that she will let this person loot Graettin's posessions, but that a matter to be settled later.

After a moment Elenna adds "We are not the only one who does. Until the murderer found more of Graettin's acquintance may come to you. Some, regrettably may has ... less patience than others. If there's indeed nothing in the tower of importance, why not let us check it so we can vouch for you if such trouble ever arise?"

"You really want to get in there, don't you?" That's what he was waiting for... you to reveal how much you wanted to get inside the wizard's tower.

"How about we make a deal? I have a problem that I would have normally gone to Graettin for, but I believe his friends should do in helping me."

On his desk, Bergen begins leafing through papers until he reveals a crude map of the town. It shows a northern path from the town to the mine.

"For nearly a month now none of the miners in town have been able to make it to the mine's entrance. A gang of gnolls has come and raided anyone who tries to go down this road."

The mine is north of town, about two miles. This northern path winds through several hills until it comes to a cliffside that reveals the entrance to the mine.

"I need this road cleared so we can continue production. If you can take care of all the gnolls... then I will give you free access to the Wizard's tower."

The robed half orc twins (I 2 and J 2) pull an obsidian holy symbol depicting the face of a terrifying three eyed monster from their robes. It dangles on a chain around his neck.

Jax:
You recognize this as Lamashtu's holy symbol.

He speaks a dark word and all of a sudden a burst of pain hit the both of you. It is like dark energy trying to worm its way into your skin.

Half orc with a falchion channels negative energy in a 30 foot burst.

I just wanted to remind Sillycomic that all of the orcs (excluding the cleric that channeled if he desires) will need to make the same Will save, for the damage is non-selective in a 30' burst. If the orc has the Selective Channeling feat, he can only pick CHA modifier number to not be affected. Since the DC save is 13, I am going to assume that the CHA of said channeler is 12, so only one is not affected.

Neb's vision blurs as he is struck by the wave of evil, but the little battle-rager is determined to fight so long as there's blood left in his guts and then some. North of town you go through the familiar road that takes you to the Wizard’s tower. This is the Mining Road that the mayor was talking about, but you don't travel on it for very long.

A path cuts from the main road into a beautiful garden. Graettin loved to occupy himself with many things, and having a nice garden was one of them.

There are fresh tracks on the path.

Belinda is holding a crossbow, but it is at her side. She is crying softly. Edgar is holding her, his shortsword thrown to the ground. He looks surprised when he sees you, but then recognizes you and something melts in him.

"Look, it's more friends," Belinda looks up and smiles at your approach.

"Hurry, please. In the back... it's Neb and a friend of his. They fought a bunch of reds. It sounded pretty bad. But... but it's all quiet now. I'm too scared to go look."

And… since he answered all that was asked of him, he will begin to walk away. He keeps a very wary eye on both of you as he slowly steps away from the situation, not turning his back for any reason. He will begin running as soon as he’s far enough away that he can’t be hit.

You both hear sounds of footsteps coming from the Wizard's tower behind you.

Ooc: no one asked any other questions, readied any actions (apart from if he did any funny business, which he did not) or gave me any indication that you wouldn’t let him go. However, he would use a full action to withdraw, so he’s about 30 feet away before he starts to run. You could easily charge and attack if you so wished. Plus Jax, you are right next to him. With your enlarged you could get an AoO if you so wished since he will be moving through 10 feet of your threatened area to get away.

I don't know all of it, I haven't seen much of the inside, but I know there's traps if you don't know where you're going."

"There is a password that lets you get around our territory easy enough. I just have to talk to a bar tender at the River's Bend. Only a red can vouch for outsiders.

"But, that'll only let you walk through the east side. You won't be able to get into the base or the warehouse. There is no password for that. No one gets into the hideout but a red. No exceptions.

"The warehouse doesn't have a password, but that's because the guards know who is allowed to come in and out. If you aren't supposed to be there, they'll know.

"The warehouse should have lumber at the moment, but I think there's some mining materials too. I don't know, it's been a while since I was in there. A few months at least. The base holds... well a little bit of everything. We have drugs, coin, looted supplies, weapons.

"The password is Golarion. I say it to the bartender and he gives word to the other reds that you won't be harmed while walking in our territory. The password can only be said by a red."

He looks back up at the group now surrounding him, pleading eyes going from one to the next, "I don't know about the warehouse guards. I told you, I don't go there all that often. Neb

You search the area thoroughly, but there is nothing within the burned areas of the meadow to find. These guys did a pretty thorough job of hiding whatever it was they were supposed to hide.

You imagine the large area scorched in the middle would be where Graettin's body was found, that matches the story that Temon told you. There is nothing left but blackened earth and a few charred twigs that used to be plants.

Shar is silent now as he tries to weigh out the options on what to do next. As he hears the evil priest of Lamashtu spitting out information to barter for his life, the warrior moves over towards were Neb is, among the charred ground. He crouches down and watches the halfling barbarian for a moment, silently amazed at his companion's fortitude. He's a tough one Shar thinks to himself as he absently looks down at the charred ground Now what exactly were you trying to destroy here with alchemical fire...evidence? Something else? But what is required to be destroyed in such a way. Why with alchemical fire? Shar watches Neb continue in his searching, and then grabs a handful of charred earth, letting it trickle slowly through his fingers, as he continues in his silent musings. And what to do about this evil priest? Keeping him alive would seem to place his troupe in more danger than if we simply killed him outright...but...there are always consequences to every action...and the rub is...which one is the best course, overall? Shar stood up and looked around the area a bit more, as if to maybe glean something about this particular position he now stood Indeed, what were you up to, 'Ole Fox'? Shar glances back at the prisoner And what indeed that would involve the likes of them? Shar gazes back over at the tower, still thinking, his mind recollecting his old friend's voice, almost as if he was speaking to him now. "Remember Shar" He could barely smell the scent of pipeweed as he recollected a better time "when faced with a problem that seems to offer no solution, sometimes... sometimes its best to place yourself into the mind and life of the person your trying to understand, to better lend a fresh perspective of things..." Shar smiles slightly as he recalls his friend and oft time mentor’s words...and taking a deep breath to clear his head, prepares to replay in his own mind a day in the life of Graettin...

Elenna glances at the Red cleric and each of her companions, thinking about the next course of action.

Elenna ask to Jax "Are you done with your questioning?"

If he say yes, otherwise Elenna will wait for him to finish before continuing.

"So, what should we do next?" Her voice somber "If we want to talk to Kelban and scout the Red's base first, we need to find a place where we can secure this fellow for a time... what is your name anyway?" A little courtesy never hurts "Preferably without too many people knowing. Perhaps I can talk with those guards" She makes a gesture to where Edgar and Belinda supposed to be. Unless we kill him here and now.

Eventhough, Elenna has no compulsion about killing opponents in battle, killing an surrendering prisoner after giving a hope by promising, only to discard that promise when he serve no purpose any more ... doesn't resonate well with Elenna's principle.

Still,...

"Not that we need him to vouch any of us you know." She touches her headband with a hand. Suddenly her appearance changing into uncanny resemblance of the Red cleric. Well, plus any headgear that would be inconspicuous for him to wear

Looking back at the half orc priest of Lamashtu, Shar sizes him up briefly, as his thoughts wrestle with the current dilemma. The path we walk sometimes offers hard choices...and this is certainly one of them. There is little course but to slay this adversary (and any others that may yet live here) outright, as he is an enemy...an enemy that directly drew blood on my companions and an enemy involved with the murder of Graettin. An enemy, who if left alive, will continue to place our troupe and any other innocents in danger. If only the town of Reavin could be trusted with this evil priest's imprisonment, than that would allow us an additional option...but the mayor himself may very well be entwined in such corruption. No… Shar continues in his thoughts, as a bitterness edges in the back of his throat ...this is truly the only way, by Calistra. And for such a task he wouldn’t expect others to do what he personally wasn’t prepared to do himself... Shar stands up and moves over to where the party is gathered with the half orc priest. "Well spoken, Vaiska." As Shar's steely gaze locks fully onto the evil priest's eyes "Why don’t the rest of you meet up with me over to where we were originally planning on gathering today, and I will be along shortly."

"You wish to know my name before you kill me?" He asks as he slowly stands up, holding out his hands to show he means nothing more than to be on his feet.

"Trock. Second priest of Lamashtu. Acolyte for the Yaenit."

OOC Shar will pull out some rope, enough to bind the half orc priest with tightly behind his back, and begin tying him up...then will gag him, by taking some piece of cloth off one of the corpses, and stuffing it in the half orcs mouth, then securing it with some more rope...(I will take off 10 ft of rope from my character sheet, if that sounds reasonable) I will then wait for the rest of the group to set off back to the Sledgehammer, (or if some or all the companions decide to remain, will continue regardless) and then here is what Shar plans to do:

Shar's gaze seems to look past the half orc, as if he isnt truly there...perhaps as if the young warrior was lost in some distant memory or thought. As the rest of his companions move out of sight, he finally draws out Myrthelvian and his grey eyes lock fully onto the half orc's red. Shar moves in front of him, and tells the evil cleric to kneel. As he continues to hold the half orcs gaze in his own, Shar speaks cooly, "Trock, Second priest of Lamashtu. Acolyte for the Yaenit...in consequence for attempting to kill two of my companions, I do sentence you to die." Shar lifts his greatsword high above his head, never taking his eyes off that of Trock's, and brings it down fully on the half orc's neck.

The half-orc listens and watches the others. He shakes his head at Elenna's query about having more questions and says, "Jax of Erastil has no more questions." He then shrinks down to his normal size and continues to gather all of the items from the fallen and captured orcs for use to sell later (including the priest's). Since he most likely cannot carry all of it himself, he will either recruit the others or hide the armor and weapons to in the garden.

As Jax finishes, he will wait for Shar. When the deed is done, he will nod and drag the unconscious red to lie next to the dead priest. In a show of solidarity, he will decapitate him as well using his axe.

Jax then rounds up the Red corpses and heads and places near in the same place where Graettin was killed. He gathers tinder to make a pyre on the same spot where Graettin was killed. Jax then piles the corpses and heads as well as unusable clothes over the sticks and branches. He then takes out one of the vials of alchemical fire and says a prayer over the corpses, "Erastil, let these become better dirt in death than they were in life." Jax then will toss the alchemical fire on the pyre and make sure they are consumed and no fire spreads.

Regardless, this will should prove to be a windfall, one way or the other." As Shar approaches, she pipes up. "Well well, looks like our friend won't be joining us after all." She smiles, "guess he didn't make the cut then?"

"You know he was right to do it, don't you?" a voice inside her says; it's what little remains of her conscious. "I know it was, but come on, look at him," she takes note of his solemn face. This was not an easy decision to make. "He was asking for it! Oh, alright, alright."

Edgar bids you all a nice enough goodbye. He is holding Belinda who is crying softly. She's thankful you are all safe, but that sends her into another burst of tears that she can not seem to control.

You are all heading back down Miner's Road and into town.

It is getting towards evening time now and the Sledgehammer is picking up in business. As you arrive there are a good dozen or so people in here enjoying themselves and some fine drink.

Among those in here are Temon, solemnly sitting by the fire and sipping some elven wine. Cellan Vanhosen is here as well. no longer in his full plate, he now dons rather very impressive noble's clothes. And the woman you saw earlier at the bar. Kelban opens the door to his room cautiously, he glances over each one of you before his eyes light on Shar and he smiles.

"That was quick... come in, come in."

He opens the door wide enough for you all to come in.

The room is simple enough. There is a bed with covers that looks slept in, a small writing desk with a chair in the corner and a single window that looks out into the evening skyline.

"Thank you all for coming. You have my condolences for what happened today. I think this is something you should all see."

Kelban points you all to the writing desk. He pulls out Graettin's will and flattenss out the parchment for all of you to read. There is a shimmer of magic as you all look upon it.

The first part everyone can read:

"The last Will and Testament of Graettin Eddinson, Guild Initiate of the Talon's Keep."

Underneath you can all read the names of everyone within your party. Shar, Elenna, Jax, Neb and Vaiska. There are other names as well, including some that you recognize: Kelban, Fayle, Cellan, Terran, Edgar, Trock. Plus a few other names you do not recognize.

There is a blank space underneath each name, except if it is your name. You have text written underneath your name that you can read easy enough. Whatever sort of magic is in this document prevents you from reading anyone else's part of the will.

Shar

If you are reading this, than my worst fears are true. Something has happened to me. Hopefully this will finds you, and finds you well. When we left last I remember you were still on a search to find yourself. I hope that search was not in vain. You have made me proud throughout the years.

Trust no one. That is the best advice I could ever give you. There will be people you meet once I have passed that will claim to be my friends, or know me personally, not all of them speak the truth. Keep your wits about you. I can't be honest enough to tell you to drop whatever mysterious circumstances surround my murder, but we both know you won't do that.

Look in the mines. If there is an answer to my demise, they will be in the mines.

I have left you a +1 ring of protection. I hope it protects you as it did me.

Jax

I met you once, when you were but a child. Even then you showed such promise to what you could be. I wish I could have known you more, but my recent endeavors don't give me much time to do the things I want.

I am glad you grew up the way you did. The start of your life may have been filled with tragedy, but you make your own fate in how it ends. Please remember that. My advice to you is to not forget your roots, but always keep looking for the future.

I know I have left you with many questions, but I am sure the quest you are on now will answer some of them.

I have left you a +1 cloak of Resistance to help protect you on your journey. I hope it protects you as it did me.

Elenna

We have grown close these last few years. You seem to be just starting out in your adventure of life, and it seems as if... since you are reading this, I have just ended mine. Take comfort that I have gone to a better place.

I wish I could give you all the answers you ever asked, but I am afraid that is a little beyond me. I do hope you use your curious nature to keep on with your own life and pursuits. I could tell you that while you are curious about my death, it might be in your better interest to leave it alone, but we both know that won't do much good.

I hope you put my hat of disguise to good use.

My gift for you is a simple one. You may ask a single question. If I know the answer, I will give you one. Simply write it here on the will. A cleric friend of mine gave me a simpler version of a speak with dead spell attached to this will. So, if you write down a question I will answer it.

I can only answer the question if I knew it when I was alive though. So, asking who killed me might get you no answer at all. If I do know it, I will tell you. I hope this can help you on your journey to finding out the truth.

Neb

I tried to send you home good friend, but that power was a little beyond me. I do hope that you have found good friends and good food while you have been here.

I am sorry that I had to keep things from you. I had to keep a lot of things from a lot of people. I feel bad about that, but the good news is whoever killed me will not go after you... at least not yet. Perhaps once you start figuring out everything they will.

Be careful! And if you do find the person who killed me, make them all taste your axe!!!

Here are some weapons that will help you: 2 masterwork throwing axes, and a +1 battleaxe of your size. They have your name encrafted on the blades.

Vaiska

I hope you have kept out of trouble since the last time I saw you. I would have enjoyed having another evening in your company. I realize too late at my old age that the gift of youth is what I truly wish to have back. I wish there was a spell for that, but it is not within my power.

The cloak I have given you will serve you well. I fear you may have found friends, and now you are all together for some sort of quest to solve my murder. I might tell you how foolish that all sounds, but there wouldn't be much too that. If I knew you had some odd demise I would want to find out what happened as well.

The only advice I can give you is to trust no one. Even friends of mine will have their own agenda when talking with you. Keep your wits about you.

Stay away from Kelban. Because I asked him to help me with my will does not mean I trust him.

I have left you a handy haversack to help you. I imagine a bag with many small pockets would be very helpful for someone like yourself. I hope it helps you.

Once you are done reading Kelban will hold out a bag of holding, "If Kelban left you anything, it will be in here."

He then looks at all of you, curiousity and expectation in his eyes, "Well... what did he say?"

He will accept the bag if it is given to him to look for it himself or he will take the it if someone fishes it out of the bag. After the barmaid gone with everyone's order, she speak to her companions in low voice "So, what should we do now? And what was your thoughts on the will? Clearly going for the Reds is the obvious step from now, but it will wise to gather some more information first"

"Personally, I'm interested in finding this Fayle. Though, I've never heard the name, I have an intuition she may have an important role in this".

"I'll have the mutton as well," Shar says as he waits until the barmaid finishes taking the group's orders and leaves before beginning in a hushed voice, "I feel that a strike against those that Jax and Neb encountered earlier today would be our best course, at this point in time... before they begin to get suspicious of what happened to their men, among other things..." Glancing down into his goblet, the warrior pauses before continuing. "They are obviously involved with Graettin's death, and possibly even murder, and a strike into their base may unveil pertinent insight and answers to the questions behind our friend's death." Shar looks at the faces of his four companions in turn before continuing. "This course will be dangerous for all of us, naturally..." he says with a sardonic smile, "but the justice for our friend and the removal of this oppressive presence upon this town should require no less." Shar pauses as a random patron walks a bit near to their table, and waits a moment longer until he moves away again. "This is what I propose..." *Shar begins to go into length on his plan of assaulting the Red's main base of operations...*

Potential plan
"For our first phase of this plan, we split into separate groups: One group will focus on gathering information. This will include attempting to possibly learn more details or information concerning Graettin's death...on basic information with the Red's in general (we don’t want to seem too obvious on our inquiries on that subject, to avoid arising suspicion)...and lastly, to learn about the "Lay of the Land" concerning current events here in Reavin....that task shall fall to myself and Elenna."
"Our next group, consisting of Vaiska and Neb, focuses on a reconnoiter involving stealth, basically in the area where Trock suggested is the Reds main base to verify his information as being accurate. Basically this will require looking over their two-story base and get an assessment of potential patrols, sentries on the ground as well as the roof, and perhaps anything else you may learn to be of value for our intrusion into their base. After that, you return back to here to report."
"And finally our good Jax remains...that I shall leave to your discretion, my friend, on what you feel can better aid our group...whether it's needing to personally rest some more to regain your spiritual focus, or if not necessary, then assisting in whatever you think may better aid us for success...so long as it doesn’t involve" Shar glances at the clerics full plate armor with a wink and a smile "personal stealth."
"I’m thinking we do these tasks simultaneously, so as not to waste too much time...as the saying goes...strike while the iron is still hot. And we return after midnight...go over any pertinent information we may have collected...adjust our plan some, if necessary...and then strike out against them, with the hopes of having surprise as our ally."

"For the second phase of this proposed plan...before arriving to the east portion of town, Elenna can quickly slip out of sight nearby, use her magic to take the form of" *barely audible whisper* "Trock...and then continue traveling with the rest of us ala escort, until we reach the main base on east side of town. With" *again, in soft whisper* “Trock” as our "guide", that should hopefully stave off any ‘Reds’ patrols we may meet along the way. At this point, we take out the sentries on the roof by using stealth. If the evil priest's information was true and accurate, there should be 2-3 sentries posted up on the roof. We take them out quickly by first going to the most undetectable portion of the building from our prior gathered intelligence...then using rope to negotiate the wall, along with Elenna's ability to cast magical silence around our group, we climb to the roof undetected and take out the sentries quietly. Once on the roof, we find the way into the building from up top, and work our way down. By going this unusual route, we hopefully accomplish an unusual and unexpected form of assault...and potentially avoid main traps and sentries at the entranceway, below. We may also find their leader's abode faster if he is located in the higher portion of the building, as is more the like."
"This is what I hope will work best in our favor if we decide on this course... and please feel free to add to this or take away as you deem best, my friends."
...and then hesitates a bit as their food arrives, before continuing again.

"One last thing...in my portion of the will addressed to me, Graettin mentioned a few things...the main one being: Trust no one! He mentioned that there would be some here that would claim to be his friend...and some that know Graettin personally. Not all of those who claim that will be speaking the truth." Shar pauses, looking at the faces of his companions again before continuing. "I know in my heart, as well as my mind that such deception does not include you four, so I will trust you with this final portion of information he left me as well." He pauses briefly before continuing in a hushed voice. "He mentioned to look also in the mines...if there is an answer to his demise, it will be in the mines." Shar takes another pull on his ale, before finally adding "There are many paths that lay before us, my friends...so I look to your counsel to help us find the best course, together."

Jax listens intently to Shar. When his expertise is brought up, Jax simply says, "The iron is as hot as my anger. Jax of Erastil would have no life if not for Graettin Greatwizard. If Jax of Erastil's life be forfeit to exact the price of vengence than so be it. That is the price Jax of Erastil is willing to pay. "If not, then I say we begin our respective courses post-haste, and then report back here after midnight but before the first hour bell, here in my room... Room number 8" Shar then looks to both Vaiska and Neb, "Your path tonight will likely be the way more dangerous, and there is no real contingency if something does go awry, save your own resourcefulness, luck, and guile...so remember, rely heavily on your skills in stealth and avoiding danger, at every possible turn" Shar places a hand on the small barbarian's shoulder, while his eyes level upon Vaiska's "If you are not back here before the break of dawn at the very latest... we can assume then that something is amiss. If that happens, we will do what we can to assist you. Apart from that, keep a low profile...observe...gather intelligence...and then get back here to report. Good Luck, my friends, and may the gods watch over you in favor." His eyes follow them as the both get up and leave the table. "Now", the warrior's eyes rest upon his remaining two companions, "what say we gather a little information of our own" His eyes dart quickly towards Temon. "but I would like us to talk to the boy alone...somewhere private. Jax, you are certainly welcome to join us if you feel that rest isnt warranted for this evenings...pleasantries. She had sat quiet as Shar had laid out their battle plan. It was a good plan, and she had nothing ill to say of it. Overall combat tactics had never been her strong suit, it was the one on one scenario is where she knew a thing or two. So she would be travelling with the short one, Neb. He was skilled with the axe, that she had seen, but how well he would be at being covert she had yet to find out.

In the end though, it went without saying that Vaiska loved the plan: being sneaky with a high chance of combat could have easily been her description of a perfect evening. Vaiska and Neb

You venture out from the tavern into the twilight. The sun has now gone passed the horizon, but some lingering light still lets you see your surroundings easy enough. You head east.

The back alleys are easy to navigate. Vaiska, you have not been to this city before, but if you've seen one set of back alleys you've seen them all. With a little help from Neb, who knows the town a lot better than yourself, you easily make your way through the town, avoiding all main roads.

You know when you finally step over to the east side of town. There is a feel to the place. The buildings haven't been well maintained and graffiti is all over the walls. Most of the graffiti is for the reds, marking territory. There is also some unsavory language, and crudely drawn pictures.

There is hardly a light on in any of the buildings. No one is out. While there was a person or two wandering around in the west side of town, on this side it is empty.

Ahh, but that's not the case. Looking up you can easily see a half orc searching for something. He is on top of a two story building and has a crossbow out. He glances down one side of the building, and then another.

You can't quite make out if he has a red nose ring or not.

He hasn't spotted you yet.

Elenna

You make your way up to the room. Once you hit the landing of the second floor, the door to room number 7, which was slightly open, slams shut.

You open the door to room 8 with your key. It is a standard common room with a single bed and a small chest at the foot of that bed.

(and if Shar has left anything in the room, you notice those things in the room as well)

Temon sits by himself by the fire. He is stuffing some tobacco leaves into a pipe and doing a very novice job of it. When he finally gets the thing lit he coughs up half of the embers onto his lap.

Smiling politely and with a quick nod in answer to Temon, Shar moves past the apprentice to where Terran is working behind the bar. Sliding out a few silvers across the old wooden bar top, he requests two ales and a goblet of wine, speaking in a cheerful tone "And one of the ales are for you, dwarf", Shar adds with a quick wink and a warm grin. He takes the goblet of wine and ale and heads back towards Temon, placing the goblet in front of him. Shar then moves over to a table where others were talking kindly about Graettin, to join in with them as well.

After studying this half orc for a few minutes, you realize he must be a watch guard of some kind. He is just looking down the empty alley ways to see if anyone goes through.

You slip along the edge of the building, keeping quiet in the shadows and while he is right above you, doesn't seem to notice.

Shar turns away from the door to face Temon fully, taking a step towards the apprentice, his armor creaking ominously. Temon is happy to see so many of you now in the room, but his face turns from boyhood charm to a confused fear. He hears everything that you says, but the tone seems to shake what little resolve there is inside the boy.

"How would I know?" He asks, searching around the room for something. Whatever it is, he doesn't find it.

"They said they found necromantic auras on him... so I assume it was some sort of necromancy spell. It makes sense a wizard or sorcerer, someone with access to those kind of powers murdered Graettin. "The mayor did. He came by several times talking about the mines. He's been trying to get them opened up since the gnolls arrived. He asked Graettin and I to clear them, but Graettin refused to help the mayor. He never really said why."

This answer came out in a spurt, the words rapidly coming out one after another until he was done with what he had said.

"Other than that? I'm not sure. Graettin was gone a lot during his last few weeks. I only saw him every other day. He never told me where he went or what he was doing. I was kept around mostly to do research and scribe scrolls for him."

"A lot of it was digging through old tomes and journals. There was one half elf that Graettin was just fascinated with named Torullia. He claimed wild predictions about future events. Most people thought he was merely a crazy sorcerer, but from what I can tell at least a few of his predictions came true.

"He lived over 200 years ago, so it's not like any of his work is still just lying around. The best I can tell Graettin was looking for the Torullian Prophecy. A tome or book that Torullia wrote down which predicated a great demon coming to devour our world... apparently in this prophecy there is a way to stop it. I am thinking that's what Graettin wanted me to research. I couldn't find much of anything. The best I got was that during the later years of his life Torullia lived right around here."

"I wish I could help you. Graettin kept me in the dark about what he was doing though... now I think... if he truly was caught up in something sinister, it was for my own protection. He was a kind enough man. I wish I could have helped him more when he was here."

He rests his hands in his lap, nodding with that statement.

"I have been his apprentice for 6 months now. He took me from the Wizarding Academy in South Paelo. I came up here and instantly went to work searching through tomes and journals. Honestly, I thought most of it was boring. I had been trained to learn the ways of magic and Graettin had me reading accounting logs from Hedgar the Blacksmith or the journal entries of a young Betwin Cordeelain who hated when boys threw worms in her hair.

"Although... come to think of it. Graettin was pretty excited when he saw that Torullia was in the blacksmith's logs. Apparently he had bought some mining equipment."

The fighter noticeably calms at Elenna's touch, but still looks sternly upon the young apprentice as his mind seems to be working over the word's Temon just spoke. Many different paths seem to be converging and leading back to the mines.

One path was the prophet and sorcerer, Torullia, who seemed to be searching for something in the mines, and may even be linked to his prophecy...

Also, there is the Mayor himself who certainly has apparent interest there, and wanted Graettin's help, which the Ole Fox refused. Perhaps that was what their argument was based on. And now wishes our assistance in clearing the gnolls out of the mines...

Graettin is also yet another path, who was personally dedicated into investigating and researching the mines above all things...even having his own apprentice assist in mainly nothing else, not even personal magical studies. Graettin was not a selfish man, and must have thought this research was for a much greater good, then for personal gain. Something that may even involve, perhaps endanger, the town itself if not looked into, and looked into with much urgency...
He then rubs the stuble starting to grow on his face as he ponders some more, trying to put the pieces together.
"Damn." He whispers to no one in particular, as he continues his silent musings.

And by Calistra, he even mentioned the mines in his will...what was it he said?

"Look to the mines. If there is an answer to my demise, they will be in the mines."

What in the name of the Abyss did you get yourself into Ole Fox...and more importantly, why was it enough to have you murdered? Shar shifts and turns to look back out the window over Reavin, as if he can actually see the mines from his vantage and then speaks the words out loud "Truly, what in the name of the Abyss..." pauses before speaking "The Mines..." and then quickly following... "Murder..." His mind seemed to almost grasp a common link. “…the Abyss!”

The Torullian Prophecy.
A Great Demon coming to devour the world.
The Mines.
Gnolls.
Murder.

Shar felt the blood drain from his face as his heart raced with this next thought he voiced aloud, looking directly at his companions. "Correct me if I'm wrong, but is it the race of Gnolls that supposedly worship some kind of abyssal demon lord of blood and .....murder?"

I may be "all over the map" here, and my train of thought may be just coincidence, but...I don’t like coincidence mixed in the area of murder. I’m not a sage or bard, but ... I would like to see if I happen to know a small bit on the following:

Im going to keep looking at the base of the door and see if there is a dark shadow there now (or throughout the remainder of the conversation) ...if so, I will immediately move to the door, unlock and open it quickly to see who’s there. Despite your constant watch on the small slit in the door, you see nothing peculiar.

"I don't know anything about the gnolls," Temon said, "The mayor was talking about them and what a menace they are. He tried to get Graettin to use magic to remove them but Graettin refused. They've been here for a few months at least... you should talk to the mayor if you want to know more about them."

Once more he looks down at the floor. His shoulders shrink and he is trying hard not to start shaking.

"I... I don't know. My research was boring. Graettin told me to look for two things during my research: more about the town of Reavin and all I could find about Torullia and his prophecy. Six months and all I found was what I told you just now. That's all I know. Don't you think if I knew something more, something relevant that I would tell you? Why... why are you doing this to me? I hired you to find the killers..."

Temon's eyes grew wide and he jumped back from where he was sitting, "You don't think I did it?"

He looked to the door, and then the three of you. He was locked in here alone with all of you, and these hard questions. Panic starts to rise as he breathes in faster.

"Sorry I couldn't be more help."

he's just looking to leave at this point... you aren't even sure he thought about the question, much more answered it honestly

"Look, I'm staying in room 7 all right. So... you have anything more to add just let me know. Otherwise, we can have all sorts of questions being answered next time down in the common room, where there's more light."

He was about to say witnesses, but his mind couldn't think of that right this moment.

Shar opens his door and then turns down the lantern fully, before continuing. "We have learned a good deal, but my appetite for more knowledge is great. We have a good while before midnight. As soon as you all step out of room 8, you hear a strange sound from room 7. It is a strange muffling sound, and then a small crash followed by a dull thud, as if a sack of potatoes fell out on the floor.

It is then quiet. If you have not been right next to the door you would not have even heard of it.

At that exact moment, Elenna, you remember something. Perhaps it was the lighting in this hallway or that your attention is drawn to room 7...

When you were going upstairs didn't someone slam the door shut in room 7?

Isn't that supposed to be Temon's room?

You can now hear the shuffling of feet. There is at least two if not more people in room 7 at this point.

Elenna, Jax and Shar

With the combined efforts of all three of you pounding on the door, you all hear the tearing of nails as the hinges let loose and the door itself falls to the ground.

Inside you see a room much the same as the one you just left. There is a simple bed and a chest.

Two dwarves look at you with eager sneers and the blonde haired woman you saw in the bar earlier is just outside the open window. Out there with her is a flying broom. Slumped over the broom is what could only be the limp form of Temon.

"I do want to thank you for asking such important questions," The blonde says as she climbs aboard her broom.

"Saves me the trouble of torturing them out of him myself.... this way I only get to torture him for fun."

With a delightful cackle she rides off into the night.

This leaves you with two dwarves to deal with. The first dwarf is decked out with full plate and has a large steel shield. He rushes to where the door used to be, plants himself firmly and takes a swing with his warhammer at Shar.

*With a sickening thud the hammer slams into Shar's leg for 8 points of damage*

The other dwarf lingers behind his friend (although, even for dwarves they have very similar features, they could possible be brothers). He is only wearing chainmail and has no weapon that you can see. He instead has a satchel at his side. He reaches into this satchel and pulls out a small vial with strange liquid. He drops a pinch of what looks like black powder and throws the vial at all of you.

The vial hits the floor between all of you, exploding and shaking the entire building.

Downstairs people begin screaming.

*The bomb explodes around the three of you, take 4 points of damage.*

You both step out into the hallway, which is more of a landing for the second story. You can clearly see into the darkened room below. Considering the lavish fireplace in the corner you can only assume this was one a very nice place to live.

At the moment there is a bunch of rubble on the first floor. Remnants of furniture and random wood are thrown loosely around the room. Some of it is piled up so there is a small walkway from the door to the stairs off to your left.

The front door looks barely on its hinges.

The landing goes off into a ladder built into the wall that leads up to a latch.

Nothing else of particular interest in this room, unless you want to go searching through rubble.

There's a couple of other rooms off to your right, both look as abandoned and undisturbed as the rest of the house.

Neb, unfortunately the moment you step out onto this landing you step onto a particularly bad floorboard and it groans very loudly.

At one you hear footsteps above you. There is talking in orcish, yelling down to you.

And then in English, "Jerald... would you hurry up? You're late. I'm starving. You better have brought some wine. I ain't doing another all night shift without something to drink."

Neb, you quickly pat down your new friend. He has a coin purse that has 6 silver pieces, a crude gold ring and a tiny key that looks like it would fit that coffer you found.

You also hear the front door open on the floor below you.

Someone calls up in a very halfling-like voice, "I'm sorry I'm late!"

And you hear the patter of footsteps coming your way.
