Who is Your favourite Video Game Character?
Mine Has to be Celes from Final Fantasy 6

Master Chief, no contest. I wish he was my dad.

I gotta go with Link on this one. He's changed a little over the years but is still my favorite.

That'd be Rose from The Legend of Dragoon. That right there is the CORRECT way to do a female badass :p.

Followed by Nordom from Planescape: Torment. I want a modron of my very own.

And when I saw the thread title, the first person I thought of was Link. He's definitely my first choice. After that, I thought of how cool Auron was, so he's probably number 2.

That would have to be Link, from Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The other Links were good, but he was by far the best. Never has a game made me emphasise and care for a character as much as Ocarina of Time did, and that my friends is the sign of a good, well written game.

Jon Irenicus is probably my all-time favourite. Apart from having rule-bendingly powerful magic, he had the most amazing voice. It had just the right blend of megalomania, condescension and sheer malice. Outstanding stuff.

After some deliberation, I'll say Cecil from FFIV. This was no easy decision, but he's still really cool as not only my first ever example of a paladin, but also a good example of what a paladin should be. I haven't found a paladin yet that I liked more.

Other possible candidates ranged from Gerald from Radiata Stories, Glenn from Chrono Trigger, and Sabin from FFVI to Hans from Growlanser, Bowser from Super Mario RPG, and Mr. Saturn or Dr. Andonuts from EarthBound. I like each for their own reasons, so it's tough to pick just one. I made a decision, though, even though I'll probably not stick to it.

Damn, hard choices. Glenn from Chrono Trigger, Cecil and Kain from FFIV, J.C. Denton from Deus Ex, Tassadar from StarCraft...

My favourite character shifts routinely, but at the moment I've got a real thing for Lord Uther Lightbringer of WarCraft fame.

I like Glenn from Chrono Trigger (Frog FTW!), and I love Auron, but I have to say that Murray is quite simply the best.

"How can you see without eyeballs?"
"How can you walk around without a brain? Some things no one can answer."

EDIT: Oh, and I also like Minsc and Xan, the former for obvious reasons, and the latter for his apathy. "Our quest is in vain!"

EDIT2: As the great saying goes: It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but it doesn't take any to just sit there with a dumb look on your face.

Raziel from Legcy of Kaine: Soul Reaver

+1, at least as he was in the first of the Soul Reaver games.

For dialogue I'd say Motormouth from the PS1 combat driving game "Rock and Roll Racing II" :D

I keep hearing about this guy. Who is he and what's he from.

2. Minsc from BG. "What, no effect?! I need a bigger sword..."
3. Mastercief from Halo. *Tosses grenade up and down in one hand.*
4. HK-47 from KOTOR. "Love is shooting off the knee-caps of a moving target at six-hundred paces with an Aratech sniper rifle."
5. Bard from A Bard's Tale. "What is this bloody X button you're talking about?!"

How could I forget Cecil and Glenn?! You're right, they're definitely contenders. I agree about Cecil being the best example of a Paladin thing, too (and Glenn could hold that honor too, probably, even though he isn't specifically called a paladin).

The Prince of Persia. ;D

The Warrior Within Version, hell no.

Oh God, there's no way I can pick a favorite video game character. Most of the ones I would have picked have already been said (HK-47, Link, Samus, etc.) so I'll pick one that I havn't seen anybody mention so far: Clive Winston from Guitar Hero. You just can't beat the old school '60s British rock god.

Oh, how could I have forgotten HK-47? Yes, brilliant indeed. Minsc is also great: "Go for the eyes, Boo, go for the eyes! Raaagh!"

They're good for comedy value, I suppose, but you hardly remember them for anything else (except that Minsc often screwed up any negotiations you were trying to make).

And I have to say that most of the PCs from Planescpe:Torment are incredibly well done.

I like the Dwaven Sappers from Warcraft II:

"I love blowin' things up!"
"bombs are greeeeet!"
"Tilt one back wit me lad!"

as well as some of the Terrans from Starcraft:

Tank commander:
"I'm gonna drop the hammer!"
"And dispense indescriminate justice!"

Battlecruiser captain:
"I have to go. Number One."

Goliath pilot:
"Running level 1 diagnostic"
"USDA approved"
"FDIC insured"
"Checklist complete... S.O.B."

Wraith pilot:
"I'm just wondering... Why am I soooo good?"
"You know who's the best pilot in the fleet?"
"Yours truly!"

Marine:
"you want a piece o' me, boy?"
"How do I get out of this chicken--- outfit?"

Vulture driver:
"Maybe you got time to ------ around, but I don't!"

Firebat:
"Want information about propane? And propane accessories?"

And some of the demons from Diablo II:

"Cratchety-doo!"
"Karo Baak!"
"fight-fight!"
"You jerk!"

No Nordom? He was awesome. He and Grace had some great dialogue together. I found him better fleshed-out than Grace, actually. Really cared for the little guy. Dak'kon, though, was wonderful. They communicated his age fantastically; he always felt tired, worn down, just wanting this to end.

Also: Lord Yuna from Breath of Fire 4, because he was a total manipulative, uncaring, horrible little jerk, and he gets away with all his evil plans, is alive at the end, and is actively plotting more horrible stuff. Awesome villain.

You know, I never really kept Nordom around. I think I picked him up right before I dropped him in favor of Vhailor. Maybe next time I play (because you just HAVE to keep coming back to P:T), I'll get him early and keep him around for a while....

I so agree on Dak'kon. And the scene where you find out Morte's little secret from Grace and talk to him about it, and then he tells you his version of hooking up with you while you have a memory of the true events was incredibly well done. Morte never felt so real to me as he did after that moment.

yeah, OK, I'm gonna go with Agent 47. Strangling people just to steal their outfits always entertains me and his voice is wicked.

Also:
Richard Grey, the Master of the Super-mutants. He appeared in Fallout for all of five minutes, but absolutely owned it. His evil plan even almost made sense. One of my favourite villains ever.

Kyle Katarn, Jan Ors, Sariss, Jerec, 8T88 and basically everyone from Dark Forces II were awesome. Except for Boc. I still hate Boc.

Chun-Li is cool. Ryu, Ken and Vega aren't bad either.

JC Denton. The cold-blooded killer that just wanted to be loved. (At least that's how I played him. You may have him as a cyborg pro-hacker or the fairy ninja.)

A good female lead would have to be Joanna Dark. She seemed to be a less-godlike version of JC, and with a more flexible work ethic.

They should mate and make the ultimate action hero.

(For sheer one-liner awesomeness, I vote Gordon Freeman's broter, the Postal Dude. He can make any situation comedy gold.

I said it first and if you don't agree oh well Thunder God Cid from Final Fantasy tatics.

I really don't have a number #1 but if I HAD to give only one Squall by far skrew cloud he is just a clone anyway and on the note of Squall 'Leon' as they call him in KH sucks but I do like that he wears a black and red version of Rinoa's jacket.

Now for the list.
ANY and ALL characters of FFVIII in fact Ill list them.
Seifer
Raijin
Fujin
Rinoa
Zell
Irvine(I would go gay for him)
Langura(repeat of above ()'s)
Squall(same)
Watts & Biggs(but they are FF clasic characters in general)
Edna
Headmaster Cid
Selphie
Ifrit, Shiva, Quazaquatal(spelling?), Laviathin, etc...
Qustest Trepp(Drools)
Need I say more? YES! But later.
All characters from FFVII accept Cloud cause he sucks.
Wakka
Auron
Kumari
Lulu
Rikku(I don't know how the two are splled different so...)
Yuna
NOT Tidus just because.
Cecil
KOTOR I & II
The Exile
Revan
Malak

HK-47 Do you need me to kill someone master?

I see alot of people picked characters from FF IV, but no Rydia and Edge? Those two had so many moments it was priceless. Granted you had to get the snes hard mode version to see the real lines but hey, it was worth it.

Flonne from Disgaea was a riot too. Actually, all the characters in Disgaea were so stupid they were hilarious. But Flonne takes the cake.

I'm going to have to fourth (fifth? Ah, I've lost count) Murray. And then, let's see, there's...

Mira (KOTOR2)

Ad Avis (Quest for Glory series)- Just love to hate that guy. It was a pleasure to kill him twice! ...And can I toss in John Rhys-Davies for the QFG4 narrator work? :)

To Chrono Crow:

Um... mostly because I've played the other games more recently... and because I happen to like those characters a bit more? Though, I will admit to intentionally making the list all-femaile. My other list is below.

And as for your comment... nope... they don't make a woman. It takes more than just that, physiologically. After all, there are men with those, as well. :P

My Other Top 10 list:

10. Kusanagi Kyo (King of Fighters)
9. Ryu (Street Fighter)
8. Auron (FF X)
7. Locke Cole (FF VI)
6. Kazama Jin (Tekken)
5. Mitsurugi Heishiro (Soulcalibur)
4. Kratos (God of War)
3. Galford D. Weiler (Samurai Spirits)
2. Vincent Valentine (FF VII)

Guybrush Threepwood.

How appropriate, you fight like a cow.
Best comeback ever.

Axel from Kingdom Hearts II. A-X-E-L. Got it memorized?

Captain Qwark. He's so horribly misguided you can't help but like him, even though you wish you could shove your Plasma Rifle up his nose.

Dr. Nefarious is, to me, the funniest villain I've ever found on the PS2.

Sonic the Hedgehog: He's Blue, he's got super speed and he looks nothing like a hedgehog. I don't know but he's just plain fun.

Ryudo, he was just so badass. Definately better than those namby-pamby silent types or idealistic heroes.

Vyse: Idealistic, sure, but you got to make some CHOICES. and he got his own little nickname. ranging from Vyse the Ninny to Vyse the Unimpressive to Vyse the Legendary

Megaman: He's Megaman. Come on!

It has just occured to me that each of these characters uses Blue as a primary costume color.

General Celes is, of course, another favorite of mine from the same game.

In further RPGs, we have Ayla and Robo both from Chrono Trigger, The Turks from FFVII, Jolee and HK-47 from KOTOR, and most of the supporting cast from Lunar. And lest I forget:

"Butt-kicking for goodness!"

Viconia was fun to have around as well.

As you can see, I can't really pick one. And that was just from one genre.

Huh. As the evil cleric said, it's not [thread] necromancy if they're already up and walking around.

All the main characters in PS:T, for obvious reasons.

Auron was very cool, and so was Solid Snake and Revolver Ocelot. I also liked Glenn and Magus very much.

And a now a new addition: Kain. You know, the vampire.

He's arrogant, scarily intelligent and he can suck blood at a distance. That's just awesome.

Oh, and his voice rules.

Hands down Sephiroth. To me he was the ultimate badass.

SPOILER (as if everyone hasn't already seen it by now)

The part where he kills Aeris is the first time I ever felt any kind of real emotion while playing a video game. Sephhiroth is the ultimate villian. But I actually felt sorry for him by the end of the game.

Most of mine have been said (HK, Murray and Minsc) but one that I would have been expected to have been mentioned hasen't. Stan, from the Monkey Island series. Irwin John Finster, Wasteland.

Metal Maniac and Mad Dog Fargo weren't bad allies but Finster was a bloody dangerous individual. Shadow panthers and rodento grosso and humongeous coyotes, oh my!

Dogmeat, Fallout.

I loved that mutt, he got critical hits more often than anyone.

Marcus the Mutant, Fallout 2.

"I'll just, stay here, and tighten the vises on my shoulder."

The Horned Reaper and Dark Mistresses, DK 1 & 2.

A scythe wielding demon and a horde of leather clad S&M ladies at your command. There really is no better way to conqure the world.

Ramona, CoC:DCotE.

"Mummy bites... Daddy says we have to lock her upstairs for her own good." Possibly one of the best NPCs in a game I've seen, the setting is perfect.

SPOILERS AHEAD FOR THE OBLIVIOUS

Villain: Wiegraf/Velius from Final Fantasy Tactics. Right up to his transformation, when you're dealing with him he's enraged, thirsting for vengeance for his sister, and then he takes help from Lucavi... and the next time you meet him, he's bleached. The first time I fought that boss fight was disturbing, because I saw a character that had so much raw anger in him, turned into a monster somehow by not caring. Watching him turn in the first place was painful too.

Also Villain: Father Karras, from Thief: The Metal Age. I can't believe everyone can say Garrett and not also mention this guy. I will never forget that disfigured, slightly lispy voice blaring over loudspeakers in the last level. "THOU ART GAWRETT, AWRE THOU NOT?... See, how eeeasily eeviwl is fewlled, when the wrighteous wield the mace!"

Also Also Villain: The Wizard of Yendor, from Nethack. There's no good story behind him, but you gotta hand it to a boss that NEVER DIES. Well, he dies, but he ALWAYS comes back for more, and stronger every time. "So, thou thought thou couldst kill me, fool."

I can't believe no-one's mentionned this guy yet.

Tex Murphy, from the eponymous game series. Private detective in the 2040s who looks like he just stepped right out of the 1940s. This guy absolutely rocked, as did his games. He's the perfect "loser" type...and yet, in his cases, displays ressourcefullness on Macgyver's level.

Cloud and Sephiroth. FF7. No contest whatsoever.

In second place: Riku. Kingdom Hearts 1. Haven't played 2 yet, so I don't know if he's in 2.

In a close third, I thought Ansem from both Kingdom Hearts was really a cool villain.

Yes, Master Chief is on my list.

Squall Leonheart from FF8.

Vincent Valentine from FF7.

Kefka from FF6.

Who else, who else...

Ahh yes, of course, Nathyrra from NWN: HOTU.

Solid Snake from the Metal Gear series.

Last that I can think of has to be Link.

I've played to many video games to think of someone else... I'll add as I can think of them.

I'm going to second someone from like, page 3 that Ryudo is my favorite. I mean, he's voice acted by Leonardo (the turtle) and he's a sarcastic mercenary thrown into the role of hero, and he doesn't accept the role of hero without payment and without a witty remark.

Honorable mentions would have to include Garrett, greatest of all master thieves.

Also, Terra from final fantasy 6. Female main character, too much of a badass to have a love interest, spends a year protecting orphans instead of being unconscious or losing hope or basically sitting on her hands like many other characters seem to do.

...Actually, its more like:

"Hey, Arthas, Undead are everywhere! The people are in danger!"

"Oh no, I'd better protect them, because I'm a really great paladin guy!"

"Oh no! they're over here as well! And they've tainted our grain supply, anyone that eats it turns into a zombie!"

"Well ****, better to kill those that are infected than to let them swell our enemy's ranks"

"Oh hey, this Dreadlord is responsible for this mess, and is running off to the frozen north!"

"Then let us follow him and end this once and for all!"

"Crap, this guy is too strong for our weapons!"

"Hang on, isn't there a really kickass sword out here somewhere? Lets go find it!"

The 'kickass sword' was cursed, and THATS what turned him evil, not just "oh hey, more undead." If you're gonna bash someone, get their story straight. Otherwise you just look foolish.

Jerthanis

If you're gonna bash someone, get their story straight. Otherwise you just look foolish.

I dunno... when he slaughtered an entire village to "save" them he was flirting with crazy... when he destroyed his own ships to prevent his own troops from escaping the barren snowfields where only death awaited them he was getting in there with the crazy pretty solidly... then when he ignored all semblance of warning and caution by everyone around him in acting the way he was, and by sacrificing his friend to get power... that was where you knew he was already heading towards crazy, and it didn't seem like the undead had to work particularly hard to finish the job.

Arthas made a great villain though. It was just wierd how you had to play as him for so long.

My favorite gaming character is Samus Aran. you can keep your lara crofts and your scantiliy clad volleyball players, my favorite character could kick ther asses repeatedly. she was the original gaming girl. now I want to see a metroid RPG. i even found D20 modern stats for her (set during super metroid). she single handedly took down the space pirates, laid some chozo ghosts to rest, ended the luminoth/ing war and still goes back for more!

Another of my favorite gaming characters is Julius belmont. Julius because he is possibly the most powerful Vampire Hunter of the belmont line. Defeat Graham with the succubus, flame demon and giant bat souls equipped and you can actually battle Julius. (hint, equip the black panther soul before fighting him)

(Galatea is especially convincing, partly because of the brilliant way she deals with exhausted conversation topics:)

Early in Galatea:

">ASK GALATEA ABOUT MAXIMS

"There's nothing else to say," she says. "You've heard what I know."

You feel a twinge of disappointment. Other things about this piece are so promising [...]. No piece is going to get a serious critical reception with such a limited database."

Later in Galatea, at least on some playthroughs:

"> ASK GALATEA ABOUT SHADES

Her hand clenches the fabric of her gown. "You keep asking me things when I've told you I don't know any more. Why is it so hard for you to understand? My life experience is limited. It's not that I'm trying to hide some great wonderful truth on the subject."

"I believe you," you say.

- - - -

(Another way of doing it, which says just as much about Princess Charlotte:)

"> ASK CHARLOTTE ABOUT HERSELF

"How have you been?" you ask.

"i am locked in a cell," she says. "and yourself?"

(Later:)

> ASK CHARLOTTE ABOUT HERSELF

"How have you been?" you ask.

"i dreamed you asked that before," Princess Charlotte says. "and when i woke up, my pillow was missing!"

- - -

"I'll crush you into jelly - ochre jelly!"
- Necrotic Drift

(I totally recommend ND for OOtS readers, by the way. Duffy alone would make the game.)

Meh! This wouldn't be so hard if there weren't so many games I liked.

Let's see...
1. Minsc from BGII, like everybody else, insert generic awesome Minsc quote here
2. Cortana from Halo
3. Alyx from Half-Life 2
4. Sergeant Johnson from Halo. Why? "When you find the enemy, you will rip their skulls from their spines and toss them away, laughing! ...Am I right, Marines?!" "Sir, yes sir!" That's why.
5. Tassadar from Starcraft, because repeated self-sacrifice is awesome.
6. Illidan from Warcraft III, because he's so well-meaning but completely undone by his megalomania. I like well-meaning but dangerous characters.
7. Jim Raynor from Starcraft

Minsc, Jon Irenicus and Jan Jansen from BG2.
Aldaris from Starcraft.
Jolly Bindo from KOTOR.

does the user-named protagonist from most things count?

Kyo Kusanagi, Sol Badguy (actually a goodguy), Chipp Zanuff, Makoto (from Eternal Fighter Zero) and Makoto (From Street Fighter 3, not that I'm any good with her)

What? Guilty Gear and yet no Bridget? No Dizzy? No Zappa? No Faust?
They're the best characters from GG!

Also, Terra from final fantasy 6. Female main character, too much of a badass to have a love interest, spends a year protecting orphans instead of being unconscious or losing hope or basically sitting on her hands like many other characters seem to do.

You think Terra is Badass? Protecting Orphans isnt Badass at all.

Um, Agent 47 from the Hitman series. Good and Evil both come after him and he completly creams both and gets paid for it too!

I don't know if anyone mentioned it, but Phoenix Wright. He is so totally cool. Also, Miles Edgeworth, and Jon Irenicus are the other two favourites.

EDIT: I would also like to say, that for whatever reason, I always HATED minsc. So bloody annoying.

Well, he hasn't been mentioned yet, so throw Zetta from Makai Kingdoms onto the list.

"Disperse, loyal battle monkeys! Do my bidding and bust a cap!"
"Sacred Tome? HAH! More like Sucky... Dumb... Thing."
"Know your place universe! I OWN you!"

You have to love a man with lines like this.

Yes, yes you have. Zetta is awesome. "I am one freaking badass overlord!"

Some other very loved characters:

- Flonne, Disgaea. If you have played Disgaea and don't like Flonne, you obviously have no soul and are but a walking corpse. Go watch the beginning of Chapter 3 (Enter Flonne) and come back to me, and then try to tell me she's not the most funny and adorable thing ever :smalltongue: .
- Samus Aran, Metroid. Because that's how you do a truely badass female. No "I'm awesome"s or sexy outfits. Just ten gallons of whoop-ass bounty hunter inside a Varia suit armed with enough heavy weaponry to level a small town.
- Zero, Megaman X, Megaman Zero. He's idealistic, he's brave, he's ready to do whatever it takes -having sacrificed himself two times for his friends-, and he's a cyborg fighting with a beamsword. You just don't get much cooler than that.
- Lyn, Fire Emblem. Because she's quick-witted, strong, knows what she wants, and is all-around pretty admirable. Also, it's good to have a Lord around who is not a pansy (*coughMarthEliwood*) or a rash and easily manipulated idiot (*coughHectorEphraim), for a change.
- Kirby, Kirby series. Yes, I have a pink fluffball among my favorite characters. Sue me. Kirby is awesome.
- Metaknight, Revenge of Meta Knight. Because when a guy can pull off a badass look despite his height being better measured in centimetres and being round and fluffy, you know you have a winner
- Terra, FFVI. Because she's just that good. Uber-powerful, yet very caring and down-to-earth. With more issues than Time Magazine, yet she beats them on her own and lets none of them bother the party (learn a bit from the lady here, Cloud :smallwink: ). All in all, I love this girl.
- HK-47, Knights of the Old Republic. HK needs no presentation. His quotes are among the most funny in any non-NIS game ever.
- Midna, TloZ: Twilight Princess. A new adition to the roster, but a worthy one nonetheless. Midna is cute, witty, sarcastic and empathic. Being the Twilight Princess herself, she is theargumental line of the game. It's been a while since I felt so much for a Zelda character. And I love that little laugh of hers.

Whoops, gotta go for now. I'll probably continue later :smallwink:

For me it was Yuri from the Shadow Hearts games, a hero with an edge, and with some proper personality unlike a lot of main characters...

Argilla from Digital Devil Saga and Prier from La Pucelle should also get honourable mentions.

What? Guilty Gear and yet no Bridget? No Dizzy? No Zappa? No Faust?
They're the best characters from GG!

Okay, I'll list all the most awesome characters from Guilty Gear: Johnny, Bridget, Baiken, Zappa, Ky, I-no, Slayer, Testament, Dizzy, Faust, May, Chipp, Sol, Axel, Millia, Potemkin and Eddie... did I miss anyone? (What I'm saying here is that they're ALL horribly badass)

You think Terra is Badass? Protecting Orphans isnt Badass at all.

...obviously I disagree with you, or else I wouldn't have said that it was in fact, badass to do so. I mean, when I think "What's the most heroic thing you can do?" my first instinct is "Save orphans from a burning building", so protecting those orphans full time is like that, but better. And especially in the world created by Kefka, more of a trial and even more difficult and dangerous.

Drascin here put it better than I possibly could, the reasons to love Terra's character.

I used Terra to solo all 4 forms (levels?) of Kefka once, it was awesome... and disappointingly easy.

Surprised there's been no mention of Kane from C&C, when you actually wanted to follow the bad guy cos he was so much cooler than the rest.

Actana
2007-08-25, 11:33 AM
"Kane lives in death! Kane lives in death! Kane lives in death!"
"Kane lives!"

One of my favourite game quotes, Kane is the badass leader.

Other than Kane, I'd say:
-Altair, he just looks so cool, and he has that awesome hidden-palm-dagger-weapon-thingy.
-The NOD guy who debreifs you in C&C3, Holloway is great in that role. And because NOD is awesome too.
-The NOD guy who gives you your orders in C&C Tiberian Sun, he is awesome too.
-Minsc, because everyone loves butt-kicking for goodness.
-The protagonist in System Shock 2, because his only line in the game is "Naah", and after that he kicks Shodan's virtual ass.
-Shodan, the virtual psychopathic AI bitch.

Can't think of anyone else right now, but I'll probably return to add to the list.
