(Spoilering to make things easier to read)

Then:
Months. It had been months since you boarded the black painted thunderhawks of Deathwatch which had in turn ferried you to frigates of great speed and subtlety. You had spent a short time aboard these ships, it's crew of oath-sworn serfs and servitors respectful to you, however silent to any and all questions of time and locations passed. Occasionally you sparred or drilled with the handful of Deathwatch Marines on board, some of which had been from your chapter, however they too remained silent for the most part. Despite not seeing the great Jericho-Maw Warp Gate, you were alerted to it's presence by klaxons and vox alerts and the sudden feeling of being suddenly somewhere else across the galaxy. Despite your training and hardened resolve, it is still somewhat unsettling, especially without the aid of the ship's Gellar Field. The klaxons and vox alerts continue for a short time, signalling the ship's transit through the Well of Night: the deadly area of space in which no ship save for the cruiser class warship of the Adeptus Mechanicus, used as a relay point for passing ships, should tarry for too long. Some time after the klaxons had died down and the ship returned to normal duties, you hear an announcement that you have reached Watch Fortress Erioch: the grand space bastion that serves as Deathwatch's headquarters, it's exact location only known to a few dozen navigators and trusted captains.

Disembarking from the ship is the final reminder that you have left your old life in your old chapter behind; perhaps temporarily, perhaps permanently. Other recruits from various Chapters disembark with you and you are led to a small assembly area next to the void dock. You steel yourself as a large Deathwatch Marine approaches you moments after you have all been accounted for. An Ultramarines emblem engraved on his right shoulder pauldron, the rest of his armor black and his left arm silver incorporated with the Deathwatch emblem; signifying his membership to Deathwatch. His voice is booming and his face shows years of battle scars and faded memories.

"I am Watch Captain Ticanus. I have been assigned to oversee your training into Deathwatch. It is I who forwarded your names for recruitment to the Watch Commanders, if not your Chapter Masters. Leave your past behind, but do not forget it! For you past has shaped you into the warrior you are today. Some of you may not survive the challenges of training. Some of you may not survive long enough to return to your Chapters. But rest assured Brothers, should you fall, your gene-seed shall live on and be sent back to your Chapter so that more warriors may rise from your remains. You were summoned here for your exceptional faith, skill and physical abilities, however you are but neophytes to me. It is my hope that through your training we will forge you into something far greater. It is my hope that through your training you will become an even greater force against the enemies of Man. It is my hope that through your training you will be reborn... Deathwatch." The Watch Captain let's those words hang in the air for a moment. "Gather what possessions you have, serfs will show you all to your quarters. You will then be assembled in Training Hall B to begin your training. Welcome to Deathwatch Brothers."

After being led away and shown your quarters, which is nothing more than a small room with a raised stone platform for a bed and housings for weapons, armor and keepsakes, you and the rest of the recruits, which had also been housed next to you, made your way to Training Hall B.

What you experienced during training is best left untold. What you thought were ardous trials beforehand to merely join the Adeptus Astartes were trivial compared to the trials of Deathwatch training. Long weeks you were forced to study countless varients of Xenos without sleep or sustinance. Live combat simulations were you had nothing but a combat knife to battle some deadly Death world creature. Countless days you spent drilling with your fellow recruits in countless combat situations. Not all of your fellow recruits survived and their loss was mourned, only to be replaced with a burning determination to survive where others failed. All of these storms were weathered against you and yet you emerged triumphant. It was a day of great pride for you and the other recruits who survived training to have your armor painted black, the Deathwatch emblem engraved on your left shoulder pauldron, and to be welcomed into the ranks of Deathwatch by your Watch Captain. The final part of your induction into the ranks of Deathwatch was done solely by yourself, as you were brought before the giant adamantine plated doors of the Omega Vault and took the Oath of Vigil. In quiet contemplation upon completion of the Oath, you wondered what lies beyond these sealed vaults, what mysteries they contain and whether or not those mysteries should ever be revealed. You then left the Vault to meditate on your Oath.

Now:
You are all currently eating beside one another in one of Erioch's many refectories. As is tradition, Deathwatch marines of the same rank often eat and drink together, today is no exception. You sit beside the fellow members of your kill-team, which you were quickly assigned to upon completing your Deathwatch Training. Since then you have drilled with them and developed a strong bond of brotherhood of each of them, despite possible rivalries between your Chapters of origin. Some of you have shared stories of your past deeds with your kill-team and others have chosen to remain silent. The food and drink sitting in front of you on the simple iron table is much like everything else you have come to expect from Erioch: minimal, yet adequate for a Deathwatch Marine. You are about halfway through today's meal when a call goes out over the vox system:

'Kill-team Beta Gamma Secundus report to Briefing Theatre C immediately. All members of kill-team Beta Gamma Secundus report to Briefing Theatre C immediately.'

The message repeats itself once, then ceases. Kill-team Beta Gamma Secundus is your kill-team's designation and you respond almost automatically every time you hear it called. You and your brothers quickly finish your meal and make haste to Briefing Theatre C, cleaning servitors taking your plates and cleaning the iron table by the time you leave the refectory. You arrive at Briefing Theatre C, some of you more than eager to begin your first mission, having spent all your time in the Jericho Reach training and studying Xenos and other foul creatures. Watch Captain Ticanus stands at the back of the small Theatre and nods to you as assemble inside in front of him.

"Welcome Brothers. Today is the day you will be given your first mission as part of Deathwatch. Do your duty, remember your training and have faith in the Emperor and you will prevail. But, on to the briefing!"

Ticanus presses a button on a cognitor beside him and a hololith image is projected in front of you. The image itself is that of a planet. Looking closely enough you can make out the tiny specs of ships, both intact and some broken and smashed into hulks of debris. The ships, as far as you can tell, are of Imperial and of the design of Chaos. Brother Weylin instantly recognises the planet as Khazant.

"This is the planet Khazant. A war world located in the Cellebos Warzone. As you may or may not know, the planet, and indeed much of the sector, is contested by the Imperial forces of the Acheros Salient and the forces of Chaos. Up until recently, the planet was under Imperial control; the details of which I will reveal in a moment. Having reclaimed the planet, Imperial forces discovered an excavation site used by forces of Chaos. Within that excavation site they found an artefact of unknown design and immediately contacted their superiors for orders on what to do with the artefact. The issue then became known with the Inquisition who dispatched an Inquisitor and their cadre to Khazant to examine the artefact and extract it if deemed necessary. The last report from the Inquisitor suggests the artefact is of the same design and craftsmanship as the Jericho-Maw Warp Gate." Ticanus let's those words sink in before continuing. "However, before the Inquisitor, their cadre and the artefact could be extracted, the sector came under heavy attack from the forces of Chaos and all contact with Khazant was lost." Ticanus presses another button and the area around the planet begins to fill with hulks of both Imperial and Chaos design with a large number of intact Chaos ships in orbit. "The Inquisitor of the Chamber has decreed that a kill-team be dispatched to the planet with the primary objective of extracting this artefact for study back here at Erioch. Based on reports of the artifact, it is roughly 5 feet high by 2 feet wide by 2 feet deep, weighs 100kg, is rectangular is design and is has a smooth outer layer which is etched with as of yet undeciphered runes." Ticanus presses another button and a roughly created image of the artifact is displayed. Due to the size, design and weight of artifact, you realise that someone is going to have to carry it using both hands, unless some sort of transport can be found. "Your secondary objective is to locate and if possible, rescue the Inquisitor and their cadre for extraction." Another button on the cognitor is pressed and the image of the artifact is replaced with the image of a woman in white carapace armor, alongside her are 4 others, a female assassin, a male psyker, a male guardsman and a tech-priest. Ticanus goes through each of them in turn, listing their personal attributes. "Another secondary objective is to weaken the Chaos forces attacking the planet, through destruction of their armor or assassination of their leaders, for a follow up counter-invasion by Imperial ships of the Acheros Salient. All other objectives are tertiary. Brothers, I need not remind you that some of the Imperial forces may have turned heretic or may sway to the side of Chaos during the mission. Cleanse them if you can, but remember your primary objective. You will be transported to the planet using one of our rapid strike vessels. We have timed your entry to co-incide with a counter attack from space by Imperial forces. This should give our ship the opportunity to enter orbit, dispatch you via drop pod to the planet surface and seek cover before the Chaos forces in orbit can respond to it. Once you have the artefact, place this beacon at a suitable landing sight and we will dispatch a Thunderhawk to extract you. Only place and activate the beacon once you are ready to leave the planet." Ticanus displayed a tube like device and sets it down by the cognitor. "If there are no further questions, Brothers, please elect a mission leader and take your oaths. Assessment of the mission has granted you access to 65 requisition with which to use on weapons and wargear for the mission." Ticanus then pauses and allows you to ask questions.

Summary:
Primary Objective: Locate and extract the artefact from Khazant
Secondary Objective: Rescue Inquisitor Velvo and her cadre for extraction
Secondary Objective: Weaken Chaos forces on the planet
Requisition: 65
Special Gear: Extraction Beacon (this can be attached to the back or belt of any of you and offers no penalties or difficulties to carry and does not require a test to use)

Sitting in the back throughout the briefing, Charon seems to be a statue, unmoving and hooded in plain robes. Only when the Watch-captain calls for questions, does his head raise slightly. Rumbling from the shadows, he calls out a query, intense hatred evident in his voice. "Have their been confirmed sightings of the vile Traitor marines on Khazant? What type of armored vehicles are the Enemy using and do we have any further intelligence on the opposition forces?"

OOC:

For reference, I usually use bold for spoken word and italics for thoughts. Let me know if that's a problem.

Azirel, stands up from his place, tall and noble, nodding to his fellow battle-brother and then turns to the Watch Captain, speaking in a calm manner, coinciding with the serenity of his features, who look almost like a statue's carved from an expert craftsman's hand.

"Indeed Captain. Has there been confirmed contact with the vile traitor legions and even more any evidence indicating possible presence of other, viler denizens of the Warp, since you mentioned that we should "weaken their leadership" if possible?

Apart from the opposition is there any additional information on that excavation site which we should secure to obtain the artifact and where is the closest imperial encampment - concentration of allied forces? Any morphological information precluding certain methods of approach, for example low aerial assault via jump pack, to speak for my preferred method of insertion?

Regarding the Inquisitor and her cadre, are we to assume that their last known location was the excavation site or has there been any reason to believe otherwise, if for example a different rendezvous point for extraction had been set for them?

Finally, to adress the last matter, before proceeding to take our oaths prior to our departure, i would say that leadership for this mission should go to the battle brother among us who has evidently displayed the clearest tactical and analytical mind throughout our training, for it's his gift by the Emperor to assess such situations better and coordinate the rest of us effectively to enact our holy duties and carry out the mission. We are all blessed by His grace and it is an honour to be alongside such brave and faithful souls. Yet i know, that despite my eagerness and my prowess in close quarters combat, where i feel His guiding hand on my shoulder and His blade of piety upon my hand, meting out His righteous justice, i am not fit to be a leader.

It is with faith that i temper my inner eagerness to rush into combat and also with great exertion of will that i restrain myself in the thick of it. It is my personal tribulation to endure, my personal test in the eyes of the Emperor. For He has taught me humility through this and my only aspiration is to carry out His divine will. As such, i would propose the choosing of a battle brother possessing the aforementioned qualities and strategic mind for the leader position and i will agree with whomever you choose to appoint".

Azirel then takes his place again, grasping in his palm a small golden icon, shaped like a teardrop, awaiting the responses of his captain and his brothers.

Ticanus responds to these questions thusly:

"We have unconfirmed reports of the Traitor Legions of the Alpha Legion and the Berserkers of Skatherax in orbit around the planet or on the surface. As for the armor, we again have unconfirmed reports of battle tanks, captured artillery and fighter-bombers. All contact has been lost with the planet, so intelligence is minimal. We believe the Enemy may have set up a base near or in the extraction site of the artefact."

Ticanus punches some commands into the cognitor and the image of the planet is magnified down to a spot on the surface. Having zoomed in, you can see an aerial view of a large excavation site that stretches quite widely and looks somewhat deep; like a large gash in the planet's surface. You can make out excavation equipment and buildings dotted around the site.

"The artefact may already be in Enemy hands. If so, liberate it. As for any further intelligence on the Enemy, aside from the orbital support provided by their warships, we have little else. We have not yet received reports of mutants or Daemons, however I would expect that these foes would remain hidden from most. And yes, Brother Azirel, weaken their leadership. The Enemy must be lead by commanders, it is up to you to find and destroy them if you can. Whether those commanders are simply Traitor Legion commanders or a foul denizen of the Warp, I do not know.

The excavation site has many tunnels dug into its pit which run deep underground." Ticanus presses another button and the image flips to horizontal with a tangled mess of red lines extending from the bottom of the excavation pit into all different directions at various lengths. "One in particular led to a chamber which housed the artefact." Ticanus highlights this tunnel. "However I am sure the Inquisitor would have attempted to move the artefact to a safer location once she knew the planet was under siege. We have no indication of where the artefact might be at this time, however.

As for the closest Imperial encampment, a fort garrison is present nearby and was fully manned at the time of the last transmissions from the planet. The fort garrison is roughly 3 kilometers west of the site and has access to heavy weapons and Chimera transports." Another few buttons are pressed and the image pans across the planet's landscape to a large, grey square situated in the middle of a large plain. Trenches and small bunkers scar the landscape around the fort and you can just barely make out gun emplacements on the fort. "Reports on the strength of this garrison indicate 3 regiments of Imperial Guard with 1 of those regiments patrolling the local area at all times.

Unfortunately there is little advantageous morphological information I can give you, Assault Brother. The site is situated in a large plain devoid of anything worthy of note: most of the natural landscape of this planet has been decimated due to the constant fighting. However it would be possible to initiate a quick, but controlled descent into the site using your jump pack.

The Inquisitor and her cadre had set up camp next to the excavation site and her last transmission placed her and her cadre there. Since the artefact appears to be what the forces of Chaos are after, it is likely that if she were there when the invasion occurred, she would have been captured, killed or fled. It is more likely that she and her cadre would have moved to a more secure or unknown location.

Noted Brother Azirel. Any further questions or do you wish to nominate a leader now?" Ticanus leaves the floor open.

Svari reviews the information in his mind before asking, "Are there any ciphers, any codes that the Inquisitor and her cadre are known to use, any special frequencies we could monitor to make contact with them?

I agree with Brother Azirel, command of the team should lie with those most experienced with a leadership position."

The Commander

"Indeed there is. The Inquisitor of the Chamber has provided us with the ciphers, codes and frequencies used by the Inquisitor and her cadre. Take a moment to study them." Ticanus presses a variety of buttons and soon the image projected by the hololith projectors changes to a list of words, runes and numbers, each corresponding to things or situations likely to need secrecy when transmitting details of them, as well as the frequencies to broadcast them on. You take a moment to make a mental note of these. (Treat Ciphers: Inquisition as a basic skill for this mission).

"A wise decision, but if a leader cannot be nominated, I shall choose one for you."

Svari commits the information to memory and is glad he thought of this, he did not wish to leave the Inquisitor and her cadre to die without purpose.

"I would nominate Brother Tristan, he has been a very competent leader. And he is the one I trust most in such a position."

Kaeste lets a dry mechanical cackle emanate from his throat. "Dramatically said, Brother Azirel. Perhaps if the Enemy will fall down and bleed merely to platitudes in His Holy Name, you might well be served best merely with a massive voxcaster for war gear. Please do test such a strategy and inform me of your results. I would be very eager to design you just such a weapon, should the need arise. I do, however, agree with the majority of your statement, and Brother Svari makes an excellent point. I likewise would like to forward esteemed Brother Tristan's name, if he would assent to take command."

As the Watch-Captain speaks the names of the Traitor Legions, Charon lets out a grumble. "Emperor give me strength to smite their foulness from this world."

Seeing that the briefing is coming to an end, he raises his prodigious bulk from the bench. His face still hidden by his lowered hood, Charon passes a list of the equipment he requires to a waiting serf and prepares to speak.

"We can determine a detailed strategy enroute, but before that we require a leader. I second Brother Weylin as team leader. All should be able to attest to his leadership skills and his experience with mechanized tactics may be useful against the Enemy's forces. I would also suggest we take an oath of brotherhood or glory. As this is our first mission as a team, we should dedicate ourselves to crushing all who stand against us. What say you, brothers?"

OOC:
Seems I took too long to post. My nomination was made while I typed. :smallamused:

I'm suggesting Oath of the Astartes or Glory.

Brother Tristan quietly listens to the briefing, his eyes focused on the once again blighted planet. He takes a moment to memorize the pertinent details, especially the ciphers. As Watch Captain Ticanus asks for questions, he continues to study the ground level maps, judging possible approach vectors and ground cover. The sweeping plain is much more suited to armored warfare then a tactical insertion.

He looks up as brother Charon speaks and gives him a respectful nod. There is honor in knowing where best you can serve he who sits upon the golden throne.

Azirel speaks, voicing concise questions. The answers that are provided by the Watch Captain paint a clearer picture of the situation, but, as always the fog of war still obscures much. No matter, the kill team will bring the Light of the God Emperor to the heretic scum.

Tristan is filled with martial pride as Svari nominates him as squad leader, and is quickly seconded by several others. He looks over at the Space Wolf and grins as he stands. “I am honored by your faith my Brothers. If it is the will of the Kill Team, I will lead. I have some experience with command and this planet. I commanded a Predator here over two years ago as part of the Storm Wardens contribution to the Crusade.”

OOC: Seems I also took to long to post. Any other suggestions for oaths gentlemen?

Brother Alyxander sits silent thrugh most of the briefing, content to let his Brother Marines speak first. Hearing their recommendations he raises his hand, "I too put forward Brother Tristan as my recommendation for leader. However I would like it stipulated that in the event that he be unable to command, that we nominate a Second. I humbly put myself forward for that duty." His face becoming more serious as he speaks, "We will bring death to the Traitor Marines, I say aye to Brother Charon's suggestion also. An oath to strengthen our minds and hearts against the foulness that is Chaos, that His Most Holy Emperor might hear, and grant us a boon." he stands up and walks over to the map of the excavation site, "Also I would recomend we aim to touch down somewhere between the fortress and the excavation site. The former being a potential site for reinforcement or, should the foul Traitor Marines be present, it may have been captured and perverted. This we should confirm before proceeding." he says, indicating a general area on the map, "What say you?" he regards his Brother Marines, and Watch-Captain Ticanus, but Brother Tristan in particular.

Tristan turns to Brother Alyxander. “A wise precaution brother, I second the motion for you to act as assistant squad leader. As to an Oath, it seems to me that an extraction mission does not lend itself well to an Oath of Glory. The oath of brotherhood, the Oath of the Astartes would serve our first official mission as a Kill Team best to my mind.”

He stands and joins Alyxander at the map. “You are quite right, the fortress must be addressed. If it still flies the Aquila then so much the better, but if it has fallen to the traitors, we must know.” Tracing a finger over the map projection he nods to himself. “I propose we should make our landing at night at the point brother Alyxander has indicated. The wreckage constantly falling from orbit lights the night sky like falling stars, it will cover our drop pod’s landing.”

Brother Azirel stands up, filled with content to see the kill-team's leadership in the experienced hands of his two brothers.

At first he turns towards brother Kaeste.

"Honourable brother, i acknowledge the importance of every weapon, every armor, every strategy employed against humanity's enemies. But it is in the Emperor and in the noble and heroic example of my Primarch, Sanguinius, that my faith lies unshakeable. We must not forget that the very name of our beloved Father is anathema to the forces of Chaos and by His eternal vigil we still exist and carry out His will. As for the special, expertly designed voxcaster, this is something that intrigues me brother and i would like to use our next available time, after we return to the Watch fortress to discuss and examine this potential at length and with further details. Perhaps set it to repeat continuously well-known catechisms and litanies varying according to the enemy we face or something along this plan".

Then he turns to face the rest of his battle-brothers as well and speaks up.

"I concur brothers. The nomination and selection of our mission leaders as primary and substitute, bears my approval as well. As for the deployment, indeed the cover of falling debris might allow us to descend like the Angels of Death we are upon the blasphemous forces of Chaos in the area. If the imperial forces in the area have been corrupted and compromised then after we have secured our primary objective and secondary objectives we can re-examine the tactical situation and decide our further course of action depending on the circumstances.

As for the oath, i agree that perhaps an Oath of the Astartes might serve best to indicate our first operational situation together, but i will also emphasize the dire threat of the forces we might face and i will support consequently an Oath to our Lord and Master, the God-Emperor, for only He may guard us against the vile profanity and soul corrupting powers of Chaos and it is indeed our faith the best weapon we can ever hope to bring against the enemies of Mankind".

Onissius speaks for the first time. his voice is low and mellow:
"I am happy that such esteemed battle brothers will take the lead. Let us then proceed to the plan:
I'd like to propose that we assume that the inquisitor moved the artifact, and we thus try to locate her first. I assume that will be the course of action of our enemy as well."

The Commander
2010-10-06, 08:10 AM
Ticanus smiles as you come to a more or less unanimous decision on leadership. "Then it is decided. Brother Tristan will be your leader in this mission. Look to him for guidance. It is also pleasing to see your preparedness in electing a second in command. I am sure Brother Alyxander will zealously take to the position of leader should your elected leader fall."

The Watch Captain listens to your exchange of tactics and concurs.

"I shall have drop co-ordinates of your chosen drop-site sent to the ship's navigation and pod crews.

I agree. It is unlikely the Inquisitor would have left the artefact at the excavation site once the planet was under siege. Unfortunately we have no information on her whereabouts or even if she is indeed still alive. Despite this, it is advisable to locate her last know whereabouts any way you can and attempt to learn of the location of where the artefact might be. And indeed, it is likely your mission will be a race against time against the Enemy. I do not have to remind you of the severity of letting an ancient piece of technology fall into the hands of Chaos.

Brother Tristan, you have heard the opinions of your Brothers. It is now time to choose an Oath to perform."

(Once you've chosen one, simply roleplay out some Oath taking ceremony, which is to be done here, in front of Ticanus, so that he may witness the Oath)

"The fortress should be able to provide transport to carry the artifact. I recommend we determine if it is Traitor held or not. I also agree with the Watch-Captain. An insertion on an enemy held world must move quickly, before they can muster forces to surround us or secure the objective."

Smashing his fist into his palm, his facade of calm cracks for a moment. "However, we cannot ignore the opportunity to smash the foul Traitors and assist in the liberation of this world. If the fortress is held by the enemy, we should wipe it from the map. No mercy for heretics," flecks of spittle flying from under his hood. After he finishes speaking, only a quickened breath betrays his loss of composure.

Moving to encircle Tristan for the oath taking, Charon unobtrusively moves to the opposite side from Svari. "Our first true test as a team. I have my eye on you, wolf..." Shifting his focus to the oath at hand, Charon makes the sign of the Aquila and bows his head, silently devoting himself to a successful mission and cleansing the filth of Chaos.

Tristan speaks the Oath of the Astartes solemnly, zeal underscoring his words. “We set out to serve he who sits upon the Golden throne, to safeguard his realm and bring his swift retribution to those who would turn away from his holy light. Before him, and his sons, our fathers the Primarchs, we swear as brothers, as Astartes, to recover and extract the artifact and the Inquisitor, and to bring fiery ruin to his enemies. The small golden icon held reverently in his hands, he joins the circle of brothers, lending his strong, noble voice to the prayer and the Oath of the Astartes. He looks to each of his brothers with eyes calm, showing an acknowledgement of their skill and courage. Then he closes them, his face looks up, his hands are clutched together at chest height, showing his devotion and faith.

"By your grace Allmighty Emperor, by your grace Primarchs of old, by your grace Father Sanguinius, we stand here before you and before the eyes of our honourable Watch Captain, to join our voices, to undertake an oath. An oath to confirm our bonds as brothers-in-arms, as servants of the Imperium, as mighty Angels of Death, as Adeptus Astartes. Heed our oath and sanctify it with your eternal power. Let each of us be the sword and shield of his brother, let each if us fulfill his chosen role in the tribulation that lies before us. Steel our souls with faith and trust to each other and to You. Lend us a portion of your might, the better to fight the horrors awaiting us. Alyxander joins the circle, making sure he is not next to Brother Onissius, old habits die hard. "I swear by the Holy Emperor to protect my battle-brothers, and purge our enemies, to compete this mission and beyond. Bless this union of brothers, oh Emperor, that we might have some of your strength to overcome our foes."

Once the oath giving ceremony is complete, Alyxander will add, "I believe it possible that the Inquisitor's course of action may even have been to bring the Artefact to the fortress. If it flies the colours of the Aquila we should check in with them."

Ticanus allows you to finish your Oath before speaking up and handing the beacon over to Tristan.

"A good Oath; may it serve you well in your mission. Unless there are any more questions this briefing is over." Ticanus presses a button on the cogitator and the hololith images disappear. "Serfs are waiting outside this theatre to take your armory requests, or you can choose to go there yourselves. Your ship, The Righteous Spear, departs in two hours from Void Dock C. Make your preparations, Brothers." With that, the Watch Captain signals that the briefing is over.

If you still want to make adjustments to your requisitioned gear, do so now

You file out of the briefing hall, some of you passing instructions to the waiting serfs and some of you making the trip to the nearest armory personally after returning to your quarters to equip your power armor and the rest of your wargear. Those of you that go personally are scanned and admitted entry by the large gun servitors that guard the armory doors. Moments later you leave carrying an assortment of wargear.

Soon enough, you are aboard the rapid-strike vessel 'The Righteous Spear', speeding through the system at speeds you have rarely seen before. Before long you hear klaxons sound and alerts rapidly come through over the vox systems. "BATTLE STATIONS! HOLD FIRE UNTIL ENGAGED! WATCH FOR FRIENDLIES!" The call is also made for your kill-team to prepare for planetary deployment. Rushing to the drop-pods, you occasionally hear the sound of tiny chunks of debris spattering against the side of the ship and the ship occasionally shakes as a nearby explosion rocks it. Once you have reached the drop-pod area, the tech-priests confirm your drop location and you are assembled in the pod, along with your wargear, and strapped in. Like the many other times you have been inside a drop-pod waiting for deployment, there is a strange sense of calm; like a calm before the storm. Your eyes linger on each of your Brothers for a moment before a red light begins to flash inside the pod and a tech-priest's mechanical voice chimes in: "Drop-pod Delta 2-1 firing in... 5... 4... 3... 2... 1... Firing."

There is an almighty boom as the drop-pod is fired from the ship. The chatter of debris is increased, sounding almost like rain outside the pod. The pod remains largely unshaken by explosions, your small size an unlikely target for any Chaos warships in favor of the massive ships of the Imperium. Suddenly you feel the massive change in gravity inside the pod as it breaches Khazant's atmosphere. Incredible Gs are strained upon you, but you have each been through dozens, if not more, drops and are used to it's familiar feeling.

No more than a minute after the gravitational change, your pod comes to an abrupt and utter halt as it slams into the surface of Khazant. A green light comes on inside the pod, your restraints release themselves and the pod doors come crashing down with a hiss and thud. Your mission has begun.

Help me uphold my Chapter's honour, steel my soul against the vile servants of Chaos, grant me strength and help me withstand any tribulation. For you are the Master of Mankind and my Father".

As Azirel's prayer comes to an end, he hears and feels the loud, thundering noise, indicating the drop pod's landing. The pod doors crash down and his restraints fall. Azirel visually and via vox-link checks for the status of his battle-brothers and jumps out of the pod, keeping himself low and scanning fir immediate threats in the vicinity. His trusted bolt pistol and chainsword are in his hands and every muscle in his body flexes and relaxes in preparedness. Inside his sealed helmet (that resembles a golden mask of piety and serenity, gifted to him as a coveted piece of wargear from his Chapter prior to his leaving for the Deathwatch), he is calm, all checking tests performed as if unconsciously, the relevant procedures as part of him as his own arms.

Azirel
The runes marking the status of your Brothers all return clear and healthy vitals

As you leave the pod you quickly take in your surroundings. It is night and you appear to be (as far as you can tell with your auto-senses) on a massive plain, scarred with dark craters and the tattered remains of bushes and trees. Battered and broken chainwire and tank traps lie strewn across the land and the sounds of distance gunfire and explosions can be heard. Across the horizon, you see tiny specs of fires burning and occasionally a larger spec which winks into and out of existance, signifying an explosion of some kind. Several hundred metres roughly South of you, you can see the wrecked carcass of a Chimera, stripped of all it's weaponry and most of it's armor.

What becomes more obvious to you is the massive horde of what appear to be Chaos heretics charging across the plain about 50 metres away from you. At first, they charge not at you, but to somewhere across to the West. However your less than quiet entry (especially in the local area) has not gone unnoticed and members of the horde closest to you shout and point at you. "ASTARTES SCUM! KIIIIIIIIILL THEM!" The horde then grinds it's charge to a halt to face you.

As the drop pod doors open, Charon ducks his head and steps out onto the surface of the Chaos held world. Clad in the black and silver armor of the Deathwatch, his prodigious size is further exaggerated. The heavy bolter in his hands appears almost toy-like in comparison, as the devastator scans the area for threats. Over his armor, Charon wears a pale ceremonial robe of symbolic of his chapter, but, unlike on the Watch Station, this robe has no hood.

A rumble issues over the vox. "Providing overwatch for enemy contact." Standing with feet planted like a titanic statue, he awaits further orders.

[roll0]

BS: 48 + 20 (full auto) + 10 (short range) + 30 (size?) : 108

Assuming size modifier is correct, that is 6 + 1 (explosive) * 2 (unrelenting devastation) = 14 magnitude.

Unless told otherwise, I'm assuming that the heavy bolter doesn't need to roll damage for firing at a horde (min damage of 12 + Pen 6 requires a hefty soak). If that is ever not the case (horde of Traitor Marines? :smallwink:), let me know.

(OCC: I'm not sure how you came up with those rolls, although I'll try and decipher them for you.

Your initiative is 1d10 + your agility bonus, which in this case is 4, not 3. You therefore have 9 for initiative.

As for the cohesion challenge (P.212) it is simply a 1d10, trying to beat your squad's current cohesion (in this case 7). You could spend a fate point if you want to enter it automatically... As for your roll, you rolled a 9, failing the challenge. You can either spend a fate point and enter Squad Mode automatically (and continue as normal on your turn) or you'll miss your turn (see Changing Modes, P.214).

And I'm not sure how you managed to come up with that Bolter roll... you first need to specify what actions you are taking (such as Half Action aiming and then Shooting, Firing on Auto, Going Prone, etc. A list of actions can be found on P.237 along with their descriptions). After that, you need to roll to hit. Only if you manage to hit the horde successfully do you do damage and even then you do not roll for it in the way you do single enemies (let me worry about that, if you doubt me, just check P.359).)

Ok, Initiative Order is:

Azizel (14)
Alyxander (11)
Tristan (10) - Turn Specified
Onissius (9) - Turn Specified
Kaeste (8) - Wins Initiative over Svari with an Agility of 42 to 40

BS of 44 plus 10 for short range, plus 30 for enemy size, +0 for semi-auto on the move = 84. [roll0]

Trying to get the rolls and actions right this time:
Onissius takes a half action move to take up place in the firing line
he then takes a half action to shoot one shot at the horde, who I gather is at close range which I believe gives me an additional +10

(OOC: Short Range is indeed +10, the Horde is also Massive, meaning you gain a bonus of +30. However, you mentioned that you removed your helmet upon leaving the pod. Without your helmet, you do not have the Dark Sight ability and you therefore incur the -30 penalty for shooting at a target in darkness (as it is night). Since you're fairly new to the rules and that's an easy thing to overlook, I'll allow you to actually still have your helmet on if you choose to)

Azizel
(OOC: That's not a problem. I intended to deal with Hordes straight away, not only to showcase the devastation, but to show you how to handle them mechanically before continuing. You're quite correct, 2 points of magnitude damage)

Drawing a bead on the closest heretic with your red-dot sight, your press the trigger on your Bolt Pistol and it roars once, sending blessed death hurtling towards the Enemy. The Bolt shell slams home into a heretic and continues to travel through several others as well. Not only that, but the explosive nature of the shell takes out a few adjacent heretic scum.

Brother Azizel aims at the foul heretics briefly before letting loose a single shot from his Bolt Pistol. The shell slams into a heretic and continues to travel through several others. Not only that, but heretics adjacent to those directly shot cough and collapse dead due to the shrapnel.

(OOC: Please in future specify what actions you are taking, as it avoids confusion on my behalf (such as Half Action Move, Half Action Single Shot, etc). You passed your Cohesion Test, beating 7, so you are therefore in Squad Mode. That means, however, that you do not benefit from Bolter Mastery (P.85), as it only functions in Solo Mode.)

Despite the unease, especially as one of your Brothers is a psyker, you put your trust in them and join their assault on the heretics. You fire a Metal Storm round from your Bolter at the heretics. Just before the shell hits one of the heretics it explodes forward, sending deadly hot frag into the Chaos scum. Dozens of heretics splutter and keel over dead. (Single hit (1) + Explosive (1) + Blast (2) = 4 Magnitude Damage, and yes, anything with a Blast factor is extremely useful against hordes, the horde loses additional magnitude per blast radius, so in this case it lost 2 extra magnitude).

Tristan
You move into the desired position just in front and to the right of your Brother, letting off a burst of shots as you do. The machine spirits of your armor seem to channel the destructive nature of the shells, as if whispering to the weapon in your hands, and both shells roar through the ranks of the unholy with deadly results. What was once two straight lines of roaring heretics is now two straight lines of dead and bleeding heretics, writhing on the ground in pain, a rather large hole in their bodies. Several heretics next to the lines also collapse to the ground dead; their armor and faces decorated with now crimson metal shards of shrapnel. (4 Magnitude Damage)

Onissius
(OOC: Remember you need to choose your starting psychic powers. I thought you already had done, but was mistaken. You can find them on P.81)

You move up to join your Brothers in their assault on the foul scum of Chaos. However your, perhaps, overfidence with removing your helmet proves to be your downfall. Unable to clearly see targets in the darkness, you misjudge the distance of the heretics and fire a shot at a lower trajectory than your Brothers. Unknown to you, you do actually a hit a grimy and blood soaked heretic in the leg, blowing it off completely and killing him in a matter of seconds due to the shock. However one heretic is nothing compared to the mass of them behind him.

In the few split seconds upon leaving the pod and spotting the heretics, large numbers of the ranks closest to you have fallen to your onslaught of holy fire. You stand in a glorious firing line, united as one, aside from Brother Svari, although nonetheless lends a hand to your efforts. The unholy horde still looks as determined as ever though.

The flurry of shots from your Bolter each find a suitably foul heretic and rend their way through the mass of unclean bodies before finally coming to a bloody halt several dead heretics later. Several lines of the Chaos worshippers fall under your deadly burst or from the resulting shrapnel. (4 hits + 1 explosive = 5 Magnitude Damage)

Svari
You level your Bolter at the Enemy and pull the trigger. *Click* *Click* The magazine in your Bolter must have been shaken out of place during the drop and you curse as your gun jams. (Seeing as you've got a full round of Metal Storm ammunition in your Bolter and this is the very first time you've fired it, I'll allow you to keep your full clip after you've unjammed and reloaded the clip. Aren't I generous :smalltongue:)

Charon
Last, but by no means least, your holy fire is added to that of your Brothers; having had to wait a split second for the ammunition to feed through your backpack. You direct your fire where the lines of heretic have not been touched yet and as you sweep your Heavy Bolter from left to right, you leave nothing but the bloody and broken bodies of heretic in your wake. By the time you release the trigger on your Heavy Bolter, scores of Chaos heretics lie dead and dying and you can't help but smile at the devastation caused by your trusted Heavy Bolter. (14 Magnitude Damage)

As your assault continues you hear the throaty booming of Brother Kaeste's Bolter next to you on Full Auto. You then hear a *click* *click*, originating somewhere in the direction of Svari. Those closest to the left flank hear a mumbled curse above the din of battle. The sound you hear next is the unmistakeable roar of a Heavy Bolter. Shells scream across the plain, cutting down scores of heretics like a righteous scythe of death. By the time the Heavy Bolter stops firing well over half the Chaos scum are dead or dying. A great tide of corpses paints the plain 50m or so away from you and the remaining heretics look to their fallen in a mixture of horror and anger.

(Horde is reduced to 21 Magnitude and was reduced by 25% from Charon's glorious Full Auto fire. The Horde must now test to become broken, however, becoming broken gives them the Fearless and Frenzy talents (they have the Blood Soaked Tide trait). It's Magnitude is also less than half it's starting Magnitude, so it does this test at -10. Horde's WP = 40 - 10 = 30 vs [roll0] And they've broken! Sort of...)

The remains of the Horde begin frothing at the mouth at the possibility of death soon at hand. Fuelled by anger and a twisted mind brought on by Chaos, the remains of the Horde drop their guns and unsheath their blades, raising them high in the air with a mighty and insane roar. "DEATH TO THE ASTARTES! FOR CHAOS!" They scream and begin to wade through their fellow heretic's bodies, preparing to charge. (Free Action - Drop Autopistols, Half Action - Ready Monoedged Blade, Half Action - Advance towards you 3m)

It is now Azirel's Turn.

(OOC: No modifer for the Horde now I'm afraid, their numbers have been reduced to below the Massive Target threshold. Even so, you easily hit with all 4 of your rounds. And as I said, unless you rolled a [1][1][1], you'll do damage. So in the interests of making things easier and quicker (I believe Executus said you had a 1 in 1000 chance of rolling that!), I'll assume you do actually do damage)

Your shells hurtle towards the advancing heretics and the effects of your Metal Storm rounds are much like that of the last time you fired. Each shell explodes forward just before it finds a mark, sending it's deadly payload of frag into the ranks of the Enemy. Dozens upon dozens of heretical scum cough and bleed profusely from the barrage of hot shrapnel, whilst several others die immediately as the rounds continue on their trajectory as normal, punching through their armor and their bodies.

(4 Hits x 2 Blast + 1 Explosive = 9 Magnitude Damage)

Brother Alyxander's Full Auto fire is a thing of beauty to behold as his shells of Metal Storm round explode into lethal frag just before slamming through several heretics. The resulting frag also proves to the demise of yet more unholy scum. What was once a rather large and perhaps formidable horde of Chaos worshipping heretics is now a clustering of insane and bloodied survivors of your unstoppable onslaught. Despite their catastrophic losses, they show no signs of fleeing or surrendering. Perfect, you think. You'd have accepted neither.

Your armor again seems to channel the destructive and deadly accuracy of your shells into the unholy bodies of the Emperor's enemies. Slamming home against the front ranks of the heretics, the shells continue on their lethal trajectory before coming to a stop several dead lines of heretics later. (6 Magnitude Damage)

Onissius
This time the hail of Bolt Shells that leave your Bolter find several marks cutting down several lines of foul heretics. Unknown to you, only a single shell flies harmlessly past the advancing heretics, unintentionally finding a gap in their numbers, and planting itself within one of the many corpses before exploding inside the dead heretic's body. (3 hits (1st initial hit, +2 degrees of success) + 1 explosive damage = 4 Magnitude damage)

Both Brother Tristan's and Brother Onissius' Full Auto fire thin the ranks of advancing heretics even more, leaving just a small group of screaming heretics left. Behind them is a scene of utter butchery; corpses litter the landscape, their bodies broken and their limbs scattered or simply blown to oblivion at your holy and sustained fire. Here and there, heretics not yet dead feebly claw at the sky from the ground, screaming in pain and anguish at not being a better servant for Chaos. They will bleed to death in a matter of moments.

Kaeste
Your spray of blessed Bolter shells mostly miss, however this is due entirely to the small amount of heretics left. Even so, a solitary shell flies perfectly into the middle of the last remaining group of heretics; smashing it's way through armor and flesh alike. The shell passes through several heretics and (although you don't see it), actually continues going after leaving a heretic at the rear of the pack, embedding itself in the ground; it's job done. The resulting shrapnel from the shell kills the few remaining Chaos scum and they keel over in dismay and anguish, blood flowing from enormous wounds to their bodies. In a matter of seconds, the last of them fall to the ground, dead or bleeding to death. (1 hit + 1 explosive = 2 Mag Damage)

Svari
Acting quickly, you release the magazine from your Bolter and slam it back into the weapon; hoping to clear the jam. Unfortunately by the time you have done this the last of the heretics have fallen and you curse your luck. No matter though, there will be other hunts you can revel in.

Brother Kaeste fires a short burst from his Bolter and this is enough to see off the last of the heretics who splutter and die slowly as a result of the shrapnel or die quickly as the shell rips through their bodies. A few seconds later not a single heretic stands before you on the plain just 40m away from you. Instead a mass of body parts, blood and occasionally a dying heretic amongst the countless corpses paints the scene in front of you. The Emperor would be proud!

(The Horde is destroyed, what do you plan to do now?)

(Since you failed your Awareness Test, and I was going to call for one if you wanted to look for the Fortress, you've unfortunately been unable to spot the Fortress)

Taking a sweeping look through your magnoculars at the plains in front of you, you don't seem to see the Fortress that you were so readily expecting; at least not in this area. You do see muzzle flash, distant fires of burning, unidentifiable vehicles and the occasional element of Imperial forces or Chaos forces roaming and clashing far from here.

Charon
Consulting your map, you determine your location as slightly South and West of your intended drop-zone. The Fortress lies North-North-West of your location by about 2 kilometres. The excavation site lies to the North-East about 3 kilometres. Judging by the direction the Horde of heretics were moving in, you're reasonably certain they were heading towards the Fortress. Scanning the immediate area, you can see no immediate threats. It would take you roughly 20 minutes to each the Fortress and 30 minutes to reach the excavation site.

You quickly spot the Fortress to the North-North-West of your position at roughly 2 kilometres away. Through the use of your magnoculars, you take in the situation.

The Fortress is under full scale assault by a teeming mass of Chaos troops, lead by, unmistakeably, a number of Chaos Space Marines. The Fortress' walls are pocket marked with craters, both large and small, and the walls around the Fortress are full of Imperial Guardsmen firing valiently into the crowds of Chaos below them. On parts of the walls, Heavy Bolter turrets rain death upon the vile servants of Chaos, although they seem to be few in number and you can make out some of the shells and wreckages of turrets destroyed along the wall. The Fortress itself is a tiered system of square 'blocks' and atop the highest 'block' you can make out sniper teams and crews of Lascannons. Towards the rear of the Chaos Hordes, you can make out several basilisks crewed by what look like Renegade Militia. Each one in turn fires a shell towards the Fortress and takes out a sizable chunk of the Imperial bastion. You count 5 basilisks in total (although you cannot see behind the Fortress).

Between you and the Fortress lies the remains of several Chimeras and a few Leman Russ Battle Tanks; all burnt out or with a gaping hole in the side of them and their weapons looted or broken.

Svari
You sense no immediate danger in the area. All you see, hear and smell is the death of the heretics before you and the smell of burnt fuel from the destroyed Chimera nearby to the South. You can, however, just make out, through your enhanced sight and hearing, a large battle waging just North-North-West of your position; although you cannot see clearly enough exactly what is going on. You do hear what you believe to be the sound of artillery though.

What’s more, we have an opportunity to deal a heavy blow to the enemy in the process, this will also ease our efforts to secure the artifact. So, let us show them the folly of treachery.”

He turns to the Space wolf, “Brother Svari I need you to scout ahead, bare North-North-West, quick and quiet. Recon only. Use the abandoned vehicles to screen you. Report any enemy contacts, but do not engage unless forced to. We need you to find us a safe route up behind those Earth shakers before they breach the fortress. Go brother, the emperor protects.”

He then looks to the rest of the squad. “Every-one else, single file, five metre spacing. We will follow in Brother Svari’s wake until we reach a point from which to knock out the enemy artillery. Brother Azirel take point, give Svari a twenty count then follow. Brother Alyxander, bring up the rear. Every-one, stealth is key, hold fire unless ordered otherwise. It's unmistakeable. Something is clearly amiss with the voice on the other end of the channel. The voice seems panicked and you can distinctly hear gibbering in between pauses of speech. The voice also does not seem very sure of itself.

"7?! Ah yes... errr... good. Good! The artifact?"

The channel cuts to static for a moment.

"Yes... yes, the artifact is secure. It is here. Please hurry to the City of Antehok. It is located roughly South of the excavation site; about 12 kilometres away. Once you arrive at the City, contact me again and I shall give you the co-ordinates of my location and the artifact."

You get a strong feeling that something is very wrong with the voice on the other end of the channel.

With Svari leading the way, you all reach the cover of the nearest destroyed vehicle: A Leman Russ Battle Tank with it's turret and some of it's front armor missing; a blackened crater in the armor where they should be. It's side guns are missing, probably looted. You all just about manage to seek cover behind it. From here, you can hear the roar of gunfire, coupled with the occasional boom from the Basilisks and the cries of the wounded, the insane and that of ordered shouts from the Imperials manning the walls.

The nearest Basilisk is just 60m away, almost facing entirely away from you. The Basilisk is crewed by a small team of Renegade Militia; whether they are Traitor Guard or just simple Chaos trained troops is unknown. Around the Basilisk is a small guardian Horde of yet more Renegade Militia. (Magnitude 15, including the Basilisk crew).

About 100m in front of the Basilisk is the edge of the Chaos assault. Chaos Heretics and Renegade Militia alike send volleys of fire into the walls, only to be answered by a return volley from the Guardsman atop the walls. Amongst the teeming mass of Heretics and Militia is a small handful of Chaos Space Marines, spread out over the battlefield. One such Chaos Marine is leading the troops directly ahead of you, pointing to weakened defences in the walls and firing off his own blast from his Bolter from time to time.

Although the walls are holding, you doubt they'd be able to withstand a seige for much longer.

Stay put. The Emperor Protects. Out.”

Tristan looks at brother Alyxander. ”We will go with your plan with a few refinements. First, this if fort Dorn,” he says, tapping the burnt out Leman Russ. “This is our rally point. Brother Kaestre see what you can do, quietly, to reinforce it. Brother Charon, you will set up here and provide Overwatch.”

”The plan is to break into teams of two, each team takes a different Basilisk. Kill the crew and guards. Load the Earthshaker, lay it in on the traitor marines, Fire one shell. Then, one brother will load again with a krak grenade attached to the shell on a delayed fuse, close the breach. The other brother will attach a krak grenade with the same fuse setting to one of the remaining shells. The enemy will be trying to retake the Basilisks, so withdraw to fort Dorn where brother Charon will be able to provide suppressing fire.”

”Brother Kaestre and I will take the center Basilisk. Brothers Alyxander and Azirel will take the Basilisk on the left. Brothers Svari and Onissius take the right. Brothers Kaestre, Alyxander, and Onissius will be responsible for firing the Earthshakers. Brothers Azirel, Svari and I will Load and spot. Questions?”

Such is the speed and lethality of your takedown that Brother Charon barely has to stop walking whilst you deal with the Renegade Militia. Indeed, such is the speed and lethality that no general alarm could be sounded and the main Hordes engaging the walls remain engaged in their assault, thinking all is well.

Despite this, however, it is likely that any long silence from this Basilisk will rouse suspicion and may expose you.

They then join together to form a flaming construct and hurl themselves towards the enemy. The Renegade Militia barely have time to raise their hands in a crude protective manner before the flames wash over them, engulfing them in fiery death.

Those that remain alive after the deadly psychic assault are immediately cut down by Svari's Metal Storm rounds, sending gore splattering over the Basilisk and silencing them before they even knew what hit them. The Basilisk is secure and the Horde engaging the walls are none the wiser.

He turns around to survey the casualties to his squad, only to find them all dead, and turns back to face his foes, contemplating fleeing. He does not get the chance. (4 hits * 2 Blast + 1 Explosive = 9 Mag Damage, Horde is destroyed)

His jump pack, his chainsword and indeed he himself roaring, Azirel descends upon the lone Militiaman, sweeping his Chainsword in a downward arc. There is a muffled roaring from the Chainsword before both sides of the Militiaman fall neatly away from each other as he is cleft in two, blood oozing everywhere and coating Azirel in the familiar colour of crimson. With this fight over and his bloodlust no where near satisfied, Azirel looks, almost hungrily, at the Hordes attacking the walls.

Azirel tries to calm himself, however the thought of letting the vile and treacherous servants of Chaos live another second angers him more and an almost feral indistinct pulls him towards the Hordes assaulting the walls at a run.

Seeing his Brother abandon the plan and run towards the enemy, Alyxander realises his Brother is lost to his battle Frenzy and he must act quickly to spot and fire for the Basilisk and turn it towards the Chaos Marine if necessary. By the time he reaches the Basilisk's bloody controls, Azirel is nearly within Charging distance of the Hordes, having slowed his pace slightly in the knowledge of a coming bombardment on the forces ahead of him by his Brother.

(Azirel may wait within Charging distance of the closest Horde (in this case, a Mag 40 Renegade Militia Horde assaulting the South-West of the Fortress), however if and once the shell from the Basilisk falls he must direct all his efforts into meleeing or getting into melee with the Hordes around him. The Basilisk Alyxander is using is not currently aimed toward a CSM. It can be repositioned slightly to the left to hit the one leading the assault on the West wall, however once that is done, the firing arc needs to be adjusted and then the shell will be fired, which will take a Full Turn longer than the other two teams who have already moved/calculated a firing arc.)

At almost exactly the same time, each of the three Basilisks you occupy unleash their payload upon the Enemy. There is a mighty BOOM! from the Basilisks as the loaders among you press the firing buttons and the vehicles shudder slightly. The shells whistle through the air for a moment before three massive, loud, white explosions fill the area where they land around the Fortress, lighting up the battleground and causing a slight rumble in the ground. The explosions are followed by a rain of mud and body parts and a cloud of red and white mist.

There is an almighty cheer from the defenders on the walls and the remains of the Hordes fighting the walls turn towards you in utter confusion. You hear other booms further away from you from Basilisks still in Enemy hands and their shells slam into the Fortress, taking out sizeable chunks of wall and Fortress Hub.

Alyxander and Azirel
(Since you mentioned you were aiming at the CSM, you don't get the Massive Target bonus of +30, just the +10 from Close Range. Even so, you hit him :smallwink: )

The shell screams through the air and neatly falls home above the CSM before exploding in spectacular fashion. Renegade Militia and Heretics just outside the blast range and thrown high into the air and then come crashing down again. They don't get up. As the smoke clears there is a large round circle of a gap between the Renegade Militia and the Heretics where the CSM once stood. There is absolutely no sign of him whatsoever and it is fair to assume he was vaporised in the blast. A large chunk of the Militia and Heretics also appear to have been vaporised. Both of these Hordes turn to your Basilisk with looks of confusion and utter disbelief at the complete and sudden loss of their commander. The Renegade Militia are visibly shaking with fear.

The first thing they see is Brother Azirel standing just behind them and although they cannot see it, there is a rather large grin on his face.

(The CSM is dead. Completely. 10 Mag Damage was also suffered to both Hordes due to the blast radius. Since both Hordes were Mag 40, that means that both must test WP or break. Roll Initiative. Renegade WP test = 35 vs [roll0] - They break on their turn. Heretic WP test = 40 vs [roll1] - They don't, which is a good thing. Renegade Initiative = [roll2]. Heretic Initiative = [roll3]. Azirel must move to melee engage the Renegade Horde on his turn, unless the Militia go first. The Militia are within normal Charge Distance, although the Heretics are further and requires Wings of Angels to reach them in one turn.)

Svari and Onissius
(Your Drive (Ground Vehicle) is tested against your Agility, which in this case is 40, not 34. It takes a Full Round to reload the Basilisk and you can only reload once it is your turn.)

The shell roars from your Basilisk and, after whistling through the air for a moment, detonates in glorious fashion within the ranks of the Renegade Militia, sending dozens flying and vaporised hundreds more. Body parts rain down upon the survivers and each one is coated in a fine red mist. They turn to face your Basilisk, shock and confusion rife amongst them. The CSM also turns to see what's happened and roars out in defiance.

"BY THE DARK GODS!!! YOU WILL PAY DEARLY FOR...."

His speech is cut short by the realisation of the dead Renegade Militia surrounding the Basilisk and the unchanged angle of the barrel.

"ENEMY AT THE REAR! THEY HAVE THE BASILISK! ALL UNITS! CHARGE THE BASILISK NOW!!!"

Despite the din of the battle, you can clearly his roaring voice and he rallies the Heretics attacking the walls to disengage and focus on you. The Militia look less than eager, being at the frontline.

(25 Mag Damage to the Militia, they are down to 15 Mag and must test to break. Roll for Initiative. Renegade's WP = 35 vs [roll4] - They break on their turn. CSM Initiative = [roll5]. Heretic's Initiative = [roll6].)

Tristan, Charon and Kaeste
Kaeste goes over the calculations in his mind, drawing upon the knowledge of how Basilisk trajectory works and speaking directly to the agonised machine spirits of the Basilisk. He then fires the shell which explodes out of the barrel and appears to head towards the CSM. Unfortunately the shell detonates just short and obliterates a large portion of the Renegade Militia behind him, sending gore and bodies everywhere. It seems the tortured machine spirits were unable to provide an accurate enough shot. No matter; the annihilation of Chaos is still pleasing.

The smoke has barely cleared when you hear the CSM scream out in anger and turn towards you.

"WHAT IN DAMNATION...."

He does not get a chance to finish his sentence as Charon unloads a hail of Metal Storm rounds towards him. Most of the shells scream home, peppering the Traitor in deadly hot frag. His armor visibly buckles under the immense bombardment and such is the enormous amount of punishment inflicted that his left arm disintergrates along with his shoulder and leftmost part of his chest. He lets out a cry of anguish as he falls to the ground; only to fall silent a moment later. A few of the Heretics around him also lie dead, the frag from the Metal Storm rounds finding a place in their bodies too.

Charon does not stop there though and proceeds to unleash another volley of Metal Storm rounds into the vile scum of Chaos; a small pile of spent casings piling up at his feet. All but one of the bullets gloriously coat the Heretics in lethal shrapnel or decorate their bodies with a giant hole. Well over half of them are dead by the time the Heavy Bolter falls silent.

(After working out all the damage done to the CSM, and factoring in True Grit, he ended up on Crit 8 to the Left Arm. He is most certainly dead. 25 Mag Damage to the Militia, they are down to 15 Mag and must test to break. 24 Mag Damage to the Heretics, down to 16 Mag. As per the OOC roll, they break on their turn. But of course, when Heretics break they don't flee, they go into a Frenzy. Roll for Initiative if you haven't already. Renegade's WP = 35 vs [roll7] - They break on their turn. CSM Initiative = [roll8]. Heretic's Initiative = [roll9].)

Tristan listened to brother Alyxander’s report about brother Azirel, followed by the dull thud when their earthshaker fired. Only a bad plan could not be altered in the field, he thought to himself. “Change of plans brothers,” he said over the squad vox net, “we hold the basilisks.”

“Brother Charon, shift your suppressive fire to the left to support brother Azirel. Brother Alyxander use the heavy bolter in the forward compartment to provide covering fire, or move to engage at your discretion. Brothers Svari and Onissius, reload and fire again, aim for the heretics. Brother Kaestre, reload, I'll get us into position to fire.”

Tristan dropped down into the driver's compartment and turned the vehicle East, toward brother Svari and Onissius' engagement for fear of the shell hitting to close to brother Azirel. "Once we knock out the infantry, we will try to silence the other enemy Basilisks still firing from the North."

Svari and Onissius
Initiative Order is:

Chaos Space Marine - 8
Svari - Wins Initiative over Chaos Heretics with a higher Ag Bonus
Chaos Heretics - 7
Onissius - 5
Renegade Militia - 4

(Onissius, you need to reload before you can fire again, that takes a Full Action, it is now the CSM's turn, followed by Svari)

The Chaos Space Marine raises his desecrated Chainsword to the air and roars.

"ANNIHILATE THEM!!! MOVE OUT OF RANGE OF THE CANNON!!!"

He then runs as fast as he can towards you, knowing he needs to get out of the range of your Basilisk's cannon. (CSM is now 70m away from you)

It is now Svari's Turn.

Tristan, Charon and Kaeste
Initiative Order is:

Tristan - 8 - Wins Initiative over Charon with an Ag of 44 to 40
Charon - 8
Chaos Heretics - 8 - Lose with an Ag of 30
Renegade Militia - 7
Kaeste - 6

Tristan brings the Basilisk around to aim at the Hordes to the East. He notices the Chaos Space Marine breaking from the Horde and running at full speed towards Svari and Onissuis' Basilisk, although he is still some distance from them.

(Due to your position, you're only going to be able to hit the Renegades. If that is a problem I'll let you veto your action)

The pile of spent casings continues to pile up at Charon's feet as more rounds spew forth from his Heavy Bolter, intend on finding an Enemy and putting him down for good. 8 of the rounds do just that and the already battered and confused Militia are hosed in a storm of lethal frag and shells. Only a small portion of the Militia are left when Charon's weapon falls silent. (22 Mag Damage from 30 = 8. Horde has already broken, although you're definately reinforcing that fact!)

The Chaos Heretics look down at their dead leader and brethren, then up at Charon and your Basilisk. "REVENGE!!! KILL THE LOYALIST DOG!!!" They drop their gun and run towards you, shrieking insane curses and gibbering all the way.

(Horde is Frenzied, Free Action - Drop Autopistols, Full Action - Run 18m towards you. Since I'm assuming Charon is standing in front of the Basilisk (so he could shoot at the Enemy), he would be closest and roughly 95m away. The Heretics had both their Autopistols and Monoblades drawn as part of the assault, so they need not ready their Monoblades.)

The Renegade Militia, having suffered heavy loses and not wanting to suffer anymore at the hands of Astartes, break from the assault and run off in all different directions. (Horde is broken and fleeing)

It is Kaeste's turn to act.

"Rest well, faithful machine," Kaeste whispered as he withdrew the mechadendrite. The screaming had quieted, slightly, and as he withdrew it was replaced with the far louder sound of dozens or hundreds of eviscerated heretics crying out their last. He understood then; the tortured machine spirit of the basilisk had no frame of tactical reference; it had guided the shot into the tight-packed mass of heretics, rather than aiming for their commander. He smiled, and then turned as Charon's heavy bolter opened up. The Chaos Marine went down in a spray of super-heated shrapnel and Kaeste's rictus grin grew wider. "Sleep well, child of the Omnissiah," he intoned over the Basilisk, and advanced out of the cabin, readying his bolter and firing a shot off at the encroaching heretics.

As Azirel runs towards the forces of the enemy, his rage boils inside him. Righteous anger and fury welling deep inside his soul awaken at the prospect of delivering the Emperor's vengeance upon those vile heretics. He rejoices as the sounds of desperation and surprise echo from among their ranks, while shouts of hope and courage can be heard from the faithful Imperial Guard troopers on the fortress. In front of him, the traitorous militia and the heretics. The grin in his face widens and as his vision closes in on them, his hands grip tightly his weapons, his chainsword starts whirring and he charges their decimated ranks, letting out a bone-chilling warcry.

Azirel and Alyxander
Alyxander begins the process of hefting the heavy shell into the now empty breech of the Basilisk's gun and securing the barrel door lock.

Meanwhile, the Heretics, having seen Azirel too, move slightly forward into the ranks of the Militia, trying to get within a decent shooting range. (Full Action Move, Heretics are now roughly 60m from Azirel)

The Militia, on the otherhand, decide not to stick around for the inevitable bloodshed at the hands of the Marine standing before them, Chainsword in hand and a jump pack strapped to his back. They decide fleeing is the better option and scatter in all different directions.

As the Militia scatter, the Heretics are left alone, screaming curses and firing pot-shots at the fleeing Militia out of pure spite. They are ill-prepared for the furious assault from Azirel as he guns his jump pack and lands directly in the middle of the mass of Heretics, cutting down dozens in a sweeping arc of roaring teeth from his Chainsword. Traitorous blood covers Azirel from head to toe, but this suits him just fine.

(Militia have broken and are fleeing, 4 Mag Damage on the Heretics from Azirel, bringing them down to 26 Mag. Depending on Alyxander's Initiative, it is either his turn, in which he may choose to reposition the Basilisk (Half Action) and readjust aim (Full Action) or the Heretic's turn)

Tristan, Charon and Kaeste
(OOC: I also forgot the Heretics were running, meaning a -20 to BS, although you still managed to hit them with a single shot)

Kaeste hops out of the driver's cab and fires a round toward the running Heretics. The shell flies through a line of bodies, sending deadly shrapnel out of each of them as it penetrates, killing a jagged line of vile Chaos scum before coming to a halt. (1 hit + 1 explosive = 2 Mag Damage. Horde is now at 14 Mag. It is Tristan, then Charon's turn to act.

Svari and Onissius
(It'd be a BS test this time, since you're actually firing the weapon and aiming yourself, rather than relying on controls to do it for you. And no, you can't spot from the driver's cab; your view is somewhat obscured by the armored panels. There is a 10% chance that all the ammo for the Heavy Bolter is gone (a roll of 91-100) [roll0], if all the ammo is gone, I'll let you change your actions - The Emperor really has abandoned you this mission, hasn't he!)

You check the Basilisk's Heavy Bolter and curse as you find it's magazine empty. Either the ammo was removed prior to the Basilisk being stolen or the vile servants of Chaos have extra Heavy Bolter ammunition somewhere... You don't know, but either way it's not here and it's not loaded into the Heavy Bolter.

Instead you hop out of the driver's cab and fire a burst off at the CSM running towards you, although you miss him, shells hurtling past his horned helmet.

The Heretics, not wanting to argue with their master, begin running towards you. (Full Action Run 18m - 82m from the Basilisk)

Onissius begins reloading the Basilisk, grabbing and pushing the heavy Earthshaker shell into the breech of the cannon and locking the barrel door. Svari feeds him a firing solution based on the last shot (I'm going to assume you're doing this automatically, since you're still next to the Basilisk) and Onissius fine tunes the aim of the giant gun. (Ready to fire next round)

The Renegade Militia, having suffered heavy casualties, decides fleeing is the better option and scatter in all different directions; leaving the Heretics and the CSM to fight the battle themselves. Both are unaware of their abandonment by the Militia.

The CSM continues his run and makes it inside the Basilisk's minimum firing range. "YOU CANNOT HOPE TO STOP ME, CORPSE THRONE DOGS!!!"

(Full Action Run 30m - CSM is now 40m from the Basilisk and is within the minimum firing range (a.k.a, you can no longer shoot him with the Basilisk) It is now Svari's Turn).

Metal Storm Shells hurtle across the battlefield and each of you see them mostly roar home into the Heretics, releasing their payload of frag moments before piercing their unholy bodies. Just about half of the Heretics fall to Charon's deadly onslaught. The surviving Heretics are driven on by the site of their dead brethren and their master charging ahead of them, but don't seem too phased by the bloodshed and battle around them.

(20 Mag Damage to the Heretics, down to 20 Mag left. Reduced 25% to 50%. Since they aren't actually below 50% strength, they don't suffer the -10 WP penalty. Heretic's WP = 40 vs [roll0] - They don't break.)

The Heretics, unphased by their early failure, continue to hack and slash at Azirel, hoping to cut down the huge Astartes.

(WS = 35 vs [roll0]. Damage, if it connects, is [roll1]R)

The Heretic's blades slice into the chest of Azirel, sending out flecks of blood and leaving small gaps in his power armor where the blades have managed to cut through.

(TB = 8, Body AP = 10, 26 - 18 = 8 Damage)

It is now Azirel's Turn to Act.

Tristan, Charon and Kaeste
Kaeste unleashes a round into the running Heretics (-20 BS from them running, so that cancels out the Full Auto Bonus). Due to the moving targets, only 2 of the shells slam home into the bodies of the Heretics, sending them flying backwards, a gaping hole in their bodies. A few more tumble over dead around them as shrapnel digs into chinks in their armor.

(1 DoS = 2 hits + 1 Explosive = 3 Mag Damage. Horde is now at 11 Mag. Is it Tristan, then Charon's Turn to Act)

Onissius lets fly another shell from the Basilisk, although the shell falls short of the Heretics, Onissius having over compensated for the Heretic's speed. A pillar of earth and smoke erupts in front of the servants of Chaos and very few are actually caught in the blast; the survivors getting showered with mud.

Meanwhile the CSM continues his run, knowing he needs to stop you from continuing to use the Basilisk against his troops. Onissius is ready for this however, and attempts to summon up a psychic fury. Tristan, Charon and Kaeste
Kaeste fires off a round from his Bolter, but none of the shells find a target; each shell flying harmlessly into the ground around the charging Heretics.

Tristan fires off a round at the distant CSM and it seems like his time spent aiming will pay off (see Svari and Onissius' combat to view results).

Charon's fire is almost just as ineffective, however a solitary shell manages to unleash it's payload of frag over a grouping of Heretics. They tumble, a blood mess, to the ground.

The remaining Heretics, driven onwards by the prospect of blood and violence, continue to run at Charon without fear of death.

(Full Action Run - 18m. Heretics are 23m from Charon. 4 Mag Damage to the Heretics leaves them on 7 Mag)

It is now Kaeste's Turn, followed by Tristan and Charon. (You've each posted actions incredibly quickly!)

Tristan, Svari and Onissius
(First I'll see if the CSM is aware that he's being shot at by Tristan. If he isn't, he can't dodge. Remember, he's more or less your equal, so he's not gunna be terribly easy. Awareness = 60 vs [roll0]. If he's aware, Dodge = 40 vs [roll1].)

For a moment, it looks as if Tristan's rounds will impact the CSM straight in his blasphemous head. However, using his superior senses and reflexes, he ducks and weaves to avoid both shots, continuing on his run.

Svari then charges at the Traitor Marine, a curse to to their name on his lips, and brings his Chainsword sweeping across him. Unfortunately, just before the sweep of the weapon, Svari stumbles on a rock and his Chainsword roars harmlessly in front of the CSM. In response, the CSM raises his own Chainsword and bellows: "Ah, finally some sporting prey!"

The Heretics, now desperate to join their master in close combat with an Astartes, continue to run forwards to join the fray.

(Full Action Run - 18m. 46m away from you).

"Warp take you, Psyker!" He spits through his helmet's vox.

(39 Damage - (10 Body AP + 8 TB) = 21 Damage = 8 Wounds left)

Despite the searing damage of Onissius' psychic power, the CSM sends a flurry of slices at Svari with his corrupt Chainsword; it's metallic teeth whirring, screaming for blood in an unholy tongue.

(26 Damage - 10 AP - 8 TB = 8 Damage. 0 Wounds left)

Alyxander fires the Basilisk shell towards the Enemy held Basilisk. The shell whistles through the air and at the very last moment the crew manning the Basilisk and those Renegade Militia around it leap for safety. Their efforts are in vain as Alyxander's shell lands almost directly on top of the Enemy Basilisk. The initial detonation is followed rapidly by more explosions as the ordinance aboard the Enemy Basilisk explodes also, causing a tremendous explosion and causing the ground to rumble slightly. As the smoke clears and the dust settles, a large, blackened crater is all that remains of where the Basilisk once stood. There are no visible survivors or even any body parts for that matter. A cheer goes up from the Fortress.

Meanwhile, the Heretics around Azirel continue to hack and slash away at him.

(Attack = WS 35 vs [roll0]. Damage, if applicable = [roll1] P2)

The Heretic's blades glance off Azirel's armor, yet again, leaving him unhurt by the unholy assault.

In the distance, the Renegade Militia and Heretics from the Northern assault are beginning to close. They are currently about 100m away from you and are running towards Alyxander's position; thinking the Heretics around Azirel have him covered. Bullets begin to plink off the Basilisk's armor. Alyxander also notices a lone CSM amongst the rank and file of Militia and Heretic. Not wanting to argue with their master, they ignore Svari and move to attack Onissius; moving around the duel taking place between Svari and the CSM.

(Full Action Run - 18m. Heretics are now more or less beside Svari, who may attack them, if he chooses to. 10m from Onissius.)

The payload lands a second later on top of the Western-most Enemy Basilisk and each of you hears, sees and feels a huge explosion as the ordinance aboard the Enemy Basilisk adds to the initial explosion. Meanwhile, the Renegade Militia and the Heretics from the Northern assault run to retake the Basilisk and eliminate you from the battlefield, in the name of the Dark Gods.

(Both Hordes run 18m. 82m from Svari.)

The duel between Svari and the Alpha Legion Marine continues and the CSM slices and stabs at Svari, hoping to finally injury the Loyalist Marine.

(Swift Attack - 1st Attack: 60 vs [roll0]. 1st Damage = [roll1] P4. 2nd Attack: 60 vs [roll2]. 2nd Damage = [roll3] - A whole lot of nothing...)

Perhaps it is Svari's melee combat finesse, the Traitor Marine's lack thereof, or Onissius' efforts to shock the CSM or some combination of the three that keeps the CSM's Chainsword from slicing into Svari. He gives a low, frustrated growl.

Svari, on the other hand, has more luck killing the Heretics. He cuts left and right into the running servants of Chaos at opportune moments. He fells many, slicing the unholy men in half at the waist, but they continue to run past him.

Onissius continues his Psychic assault on the Alpha Legion Marine. He shudders yet again at the powerful Psychic lightning, but appears otherwise unhurt. Steam casually rises from his armor. "KILL HIM YOU FOOLS!" He screams at the Heretics massing around Onissius. In response to this, Onissius simply quickly draws his Bolt Pistol and casually fires a single shot indiscriminately into the Horde massing around him. His Bolt travels through a great deal of Heretical bodies, shrapnel taking a few more with them, before it stops; leaving a line of dead Heretics in it's wake.

(1 Hit + 1 Explosive = 2 Mag Damage. Horde is at 13 Mag.)

Meanwhile, the Renegades and Heretics from the Northern Assault start to get closer to the action.

(Both Horde's Run 18m. 82m from Svari, 92m from Onissius.)

Now is not the time to be Temperamental, he admonished the weapon in his mind.

The heretics would be on brother Charon before he could unjam his bolter so another option was called for. "Grenade!" Tristan called to his brothers as he took a frag from his grenade dispenser and took a second to judge the angle before he lobed it at the fast approaching heretics.

Those Heretics not caught in the initial blast keel over and bleed to death from gaping holes and gashes in their body; a result of the lethal shrapnel of Tristan's grenade. By the time Charon finishes reloading, all of them are dead or dying a slow death from blood loss.

The Guardsman along the Fortress' Southern wall begin to disperse towards either the East or West sides of the walls, their jobs not done yet.

Combat is over for you three, although you are still subject to narrative time. What are your plans now?

Svari and Onissius
Svari sweeps his Chainsword downwards and knocks the Traitor Marine's Chainsword away. He then follows up with a mighty war-cry as he counter spins, Chainsword roaring in hand. The CSM barely has time to recover from the skilled parry and raises his Chainsword in an attempt to Parry Svari. This effort proves to be too little, too late, as Svari's Chainsword rips through his Power Armor and flesh on his Right Hand, causing blood to squirt for a moment as two of his fingers are removed from the grip of his Chainsword before the wounds clots. He fumbles his Chainsword for a second with a howl of agony which causes the Heretics surround Onissius to consider helping their master. After a moment he straightens up again, still holding his Chainsword, his audioable breathing a mixture of agony and anger.

(After accounting for AP, TB and True Grit, CSM is on Crit 6 Rending damage to the Right Arm and with 3 level of Fatigue)

Despite the dire situation their master is in, the Heretics obey their orders and attack Onissius, bringing their blades down upon him in a flurry of slices and stabs.

The Renegade Militia and the Heretics from the Northern assault continue to move closer to the action.

Svari decides that enough is enough. His duel with the Alpha Legion Traitor ends; now. In a flash of lightning, Svari's Bolt Pistol is in his hands and his Chainsword at his side. He levels it at the CSM and takes pause for a moment, no doubt uttering quiet litanies of curses at the foul Traitor, before squeezing the trigger. The CSM tries to step out of the way of the shot, but his efforts are in vain. Less than a second after the familiar throaty boom of a Bolt Pistol, the CSM's Right Leg explodes in an eruption of blood, sending small pieces of his unholy Power Armor and fragments of leg bone in all directions. The ammunition around his hip also explodes, creating a small explosion equal to that of a simple Frag Grenade. The Traitor Marine falls backwards and, his body still under the effects of pain suppressors and futilely attempting to combat fatal shock, spasms violently before laying still on his back. As the CSM falls, Onissius ceases his psychic lightning.

(CSM is very much dead. Since Svari is helmetless and may therefore take damage from the shrapnel and explosions, he must make a Agility Test of + 30 to shield his face from the debris. Alternatively he may hit the deck and attempt the same thing with a modifier of + 40. The latter, of course, means he is prone at the start of his next turn. Assuming damage is enough to hurt Svari of course... [roll0] I damage from bone and armor shrapnel. [roll1] X Damage (it says I, but surely it would be X) from exploding ammunition. So 5 possible damage to the head, unless Svari can shield himself.)

The Heretics surrounding Onissius begin to cry out at the loss of their master. They attack Onissius with renewed vigour, hoping to carry out their master's last order.

(Standard Attack - WS = 35 vs [roll2]. Damage is [roll3] Pen 2)

(Rerolling the Heretic's attack - (Standard Attack - WS 35 vs [roll0]. Damage is [roll1] Pen 2.)) - Missed anyway

Alyxanders hail of Kraken rounds slam into the charging CSM. Bolts rip through his Power Armor across his arms, torso and head. As the last shell hits, the resulting explosion from the shell tears the Traitor Marine's head and torso apart. Blood squirts everywhere and organs spill forth from the gaping hole in the Enemy's body. A large pool of blood forms before the bleeding finally stops. Several Heretics and Militia at the front of their numbers retch at the sight and give the corpse a wide berth.

Azirel continues to hack and slash his way through dozens of Heretics with great pride and thirst. He then gets a little ahead of himself and actually kills every Heretic that surrounds him, giving him a brief respite from the Heretic's blades and them a brief respite from his Chainsword. They seem tired and angry, a deadly combination... The Heretics are on him again in an instant though and the corpse pile around Azirel's bloodied feet continues to mount.

(4 hits, 1 initial + 3 for 6 DoS. Horde is at 9 Mag and must test to break at -10 WP. WP = 40 - 10 = 30 vs [roll2]) - They break on their turn.

The Renegade Militia slowly move closer to Alyxander's Basilisk, a little unnerved by the sudden death of their leader.

(Full Action Run - 18m. 64m from Alyxander.)

Meanwhile, Charon continues to run across the plains, now just about over half-way to Alyxander.

Svari, Onissius, Tristan and Kaeste
Tristan rakes the Basilisk's Heavy Bolter from side to side at the oncoming Renegades. (Horde is Mag 40, so you had a + 30 modifier to your test, so you actually hit! 40 Mag means + 40 to Pinning test = WP = 35 - 20 + 40 = 55 vs [roll3]) - They're Pinned.

The Renegade Militia halt their advance suddenly and dive out of the line of fire, they begin to retreat slightly as the ground in front of them explodes with Heavy Bolter shells and a few of their frontline fall to the raking fire.

(Horde is Pinned, Half Action retreat 3m from Tristan's position, 3 Mag Damage, 37 Mag left.)

The Heretics, undaunted by Tristan's fire, continue to surge forward.

(Full Action Run - 18m. 46m from Svari. 56m from Onissius, Tristan and Kaeste.)

Bullets fly past Kaeste as he works the Basilisk's controls without a care in the world, save for the task at hand. The blades of the Heretics come close to Svari, but the Heretics seem to have become weak at the death of their master and their blades miss mostly. The same goes for Onissius, who is also unhurt.

Alyxander calmly lowers his still smoking Boltgun, switching the ammo over to Metal Storm as a precaution, before climbing over to the driver's section of the vehicle. He looks from the charging heretics, to the controls of the basilisk, and finally off in the direction of the gunfire to the North, before his features, obscured by his helmet, set in a determined grimace. He revs the engine a few times before speaking into the vox, "I am making an attempt on the northern basilisks, support Brother Azirel," before flooring the accelerator of the tank and speeding directly towards the heretics, "FEAR THE JUDGEMENT OF THE RIGHTEOUS, SCUM!" He screams through his helmet's vox as his tank goes speeding towards the onrushing heretics.

Tristan shook his head as Svari reported his Basilisk's lack of Heavy Bolter ammunition. It would seem they stripped that ammo and placed it in this Basilisk given the abundance of extra shells in the cabin.

Alyxander, Azirel and Charon
(Rolled for Mag Damage OOC)

The Basilisk roars towards the Renegade Militia, squishing what was left of the CSM along the way. It would appear that the tortured machine spirit inside the Basilisk is thirsting for revenge. Bullets ping and crack off the armored hull of the driver's cab with increasing intensity, but Alyxander remains safe. From the view slit in the driver's cab, the masses of Renegade Militia stand before him, forming a well-drilled firing line. They don't even seem to move as Alyxander approaches at break neck speeds. It is only at the last second do the ranks of Militia begin to break rank and attempt to dive out of the way. A series of sickening crunches and heavy slams against the hull tell Alyxander he has the broken bodies of Renegades under his Basilisk's treads. Screams echo for a fraction of a second before being drowned out by more crunching. Alyxander maintains good control of the Basilisk as it tears over the Renegades and eventually he stops hitting Militia and sees the Heretics not far from his position.

Somewhere on the walls of the Fortress, a Sergeant makes a mental note of this tactic employed and reminds himself to discuss the max speed details of the Basilisks on Khazant next time he visits a vehicle depot.

(15 Mag Damage. Horde must test to break. WP = 35 vs [roll0]) - They break on their turn.

The Heretics ahead of Alyxander, having witnessed the death left in his wake and the blood on his Basilisk's treads, begin to flee from the approaching metal hulk.

(Full Action Run - 18m away from Alyxander)

Meanwhile, unaware of the carnage being wrought on their brethern and frankly, too insane to care anymore, the Heretics around Azirel, through a combination of combat fatigue and anger, enter a frenzied state; determined to avenge their fallen laying at their feet. They attack Azirel with renewed vigour, however the blades do nothing except glance off Azirel's Power Armor.

(Horde is Frenzied, although doing 1d10+4 Damage, Pen 2, the Horde isn't going to hurt Azirel, even with the highest possible roll)

It is now Azirel's Turn.

Tristan, Kaeste, Svari and Onissius
(OOC: Ah yes, my mistake, edited that now)

Tristan, still firing the Heavy Bolter inside the Basilisk, turns his attentions towards the charging Heretics and let's loose. A few Heretics at the front of the Horde fall to the surpressing fire; their bodies tumbling to the ground.

(Hard Pinning Test, WP = 40 - 20 (Hard Test) + 40 (Horde Mag) = 60 vs [roll1]. 3 Mag Damage regardless. Horde is at 37 Mag.) - They're Pinned.

The Renegades, no longer under fire from Tristan, regain their combat composure after retreating a little further from the spray of Heavy Bolter fire.

(WP Test made OOC. Half Action before then to retreat another 3m. Horde is 80m from you.)

The Heretics, this time, are the ones to retreat from Tristan's raking fire. They move cautiously back from the spray of Heavy Bolter shells and back towards the ranks of Militia.

Kaeste fires the Basilisk and the shell booms out of the cannon with a massive roar. The shell remains airbourne for a second before detonating on top of the Enemy Basilisk. The shells aboard the Enemy Basilisk add to the resulting explosion, creating a massive explosion several dozen metres in size and rocking the very ground. When the mud and the smoke settles, a large crater is all that is left with all but a few scattered pieces of metal and scraps bone and flesh an indication of a foe that was once there.

Meanwhile, Svari slices the legs out from underneath a few Heretics scrambling onto the Basilisk he and Onissius are now sharing. They tumble, bleeding profusely, to the ground underneath the Basilisk. The rest of the Heretics remain out of reach of Svari's hungry Chainsword.

(1 Mag Damage from 1 basic success. Heretic 1 Horde is at 9 Mag and must now test to break at -10. WP = 40 - 10 = 30 vs [roll0]) - They break.

The distant explosion of one of their held Basilisks, the loss of their master and the surrounding 4 Astartes is enough to tip the Heretics over the verge of insanity. They scream foul curses to the Emperor and the Astartes, or dark prayers to the Ruinous Powers, and bring their blades down upon Onissius and Svari; having dropped their guns in favour of a more direct appoach.

(Horde is unable to damage Onissius, as damage is 1d10+4 Pen 2. So even with the max roll, Onissius would remain unhurt. Svari may only be injured on his head. Standard Attack on Svari - WS 35 + 10 (Frenzy) = 45 vs [roll1]. Damage, if they get lucky, is [roll2].) - No more scars for Svari yet.
