So I'm in the initial stages of planning a wizard for a new campaign. It's Forgotten Realms, and legal books will (most likely) be Core, all Complete, all Races, PHB2, the environment books, and all Forgotten Realms books. Incantatrix has already been specially banned, as has ToB, MoI, Psionics, and other setting-specific stuff. Other books (like Drow of the Underdark, Heroes of Horror, Lords of Madness) will probably be legal, but the DM isn't positive yet. MIC will probably be mostly usable.

I'm set on being a wizard, more specifically a Diviner or Conjurer. I'll probably also be the party's only arcane caster, at least the only full arcane caster, so I'd like some flexibility. For race, probably human, strongheart halfling, or something that provides an Int bump. I also like the idea of being a heavy metamagic user (see my previous Arcane Thesis thread.) Evocation will almost certainly be banned if I specialize.

If I go Diviner (banning Evocation), I'm thinking

Diviner 5/Master Specialist 3/Loremaster ?/Something Else ?/Archmage 5

and I'm not sure what ACF/variants, if any. If I go with Conjurer (banning Evocation and probably Enchantment), I'd go

Conjurer 5/Master Specialist 10/Archmage 5

and I'd probably try to fit in Diversified Casting for a couple enchantment spells (Otto's Irresistible Dance, Dominate Monster.) If I go Focused Specialist (banning Evocation, Enchantment, and probably Illusion)

Conjurer 5/Master Specialist 3/Mage of the Arcane Order 7/Archmage 5

Either Conjurer build would probably use Abrupt Jaunt as well.

I'm now, at Il_Vec's suggestion, tossing around the idea of being a Beguiler/Wizard/Ultimate Magus, for skills, more metamagic shenanigans and for Beguiler to cover banned schools (Evocation and Illusion or Enchantment)

Any thoughts on builds, races, feats, etc. are, as always, appreciated. I'm particularly interested in anything Realms-specific, such as regional feats, that would be fun/useful.

Just a note, don't you qualify for Master Specialist at Conjurer 3, not Conjurer 5? Why delay entry?

Bonus feat? It can also be ACFed for a Domain granted ability or the Spontaneous Divination ability in CChampion.

Thats pretty worth delayed entry in my book...

I'd go with one of the Conjourer options. You'll find SOOOO many more useful Conjourations than you will Divinations at each level, and with Spontaneous Divination, you'll never be without the right tool for the job.

Conjourer5/DivineOracle2/Loremaster3/X3/Archmage5 is pretty solid. I like a splash of Wayfairer Guide in there as well. Its really easy to qualify for and allows you to bring an extra person when you Teleport. 1 level doesn't lose any spellcaster levels either. Divine Oracle and Loremaster double-dip on the prereq of Skill Focus: Knowledge(Religion), and then Loremaster gives you a bonus feat to replace it with something useful. DO also gives you access to the Commune spells (which is AMAZING) and a funny form of Evasion that is pretty awesome on its own.

Stick Mindbender 1 in there at some point, too. Ridiculously easy to qualify for (for non-Good), increases spellcasting, and grants permanent telepathy.

Remember, if you're going for that first level in Mindbender, make sure to pick up the Mindsight feat from Lords of Madness. It's like blindsight, only better.

I like the ideas so far, especially the Mindbender/Mindsight combination, but for flavor and balance purposes I am going to try and avoid too many 1 level dips, as my DM doesn't like salad bar characters. We'll see how that goes.

What do you folks think as far as races? Would I be better served (in a point buy system) going with Human, Strongheart Halfling, (both for feat, Halfling for small size) or some Elf for the Int bonus? I am thinking about going pretty heavy on the rays, so Halfling is the current front runner.
