View Full Version : The Priest

Ok this is my first homebrew class and i want to hear suggestions for it; my original concept was to make a cleric that cannot really fight but cast better, please do not try to break it with rediculous things.

A devout follower to a god who can reach to his god to cast better and turn better than a cleric but lacks the physical training of one.

BAB: Wizard
Fort: Poor
Ref: Poor
Will: Good
Armor: Light
Weapon Proficiency: Simple

Level 1: Turn or Rebuke Undead / Spell Casting (Clerical)
Level 3: Extra Turning
Level 5: Bonus Domain
Level 7: Priest Turning
Level 10: Bonus Domain Spell

Turn/Rebuke Undead: At level one the Priest can Turn or Rebuke undead as Cleric

Spell Casting: Cast spells as cleric with greater amount. Based on Cleric Spell advancement.(At any given level add one to the max base amount of spells that can be prepared, not including domain. Thus allowing a priest to cast 5 level 0 and 2 level 1 spells, excluding bonus spells and domain.)

Extra Turning: As Extra Turning feat

Bonus Domain: At level 5 the Priest gains a bonus Domain to add to his repertoire.

Priest turning: Add +2 to your Turn Undead Roll

Bonus Domain Spell: At level 10 the Priest can gain a Bonus Domain Spell to ONE level, it can be changed at choice once per week at rest when restoring spells.

i am going to suggest that you use fax celesis Guide To Homebrewing (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10313)
just copy a class with spellcastying and fill it out

second maybe for Bonus Domain Spell maybe you get 2 bonus domain spells at every lv

3rd this isnt really going to work, it practactly a Cloistered Cleric (http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/UA:Cleric_Variant:_Cloistered_Cleric)
if you have complete divine use empowered turing
the damage will be multipleaded by 1.5

How aboot changing the Bonus Domain Spell at level 10 to give one bonus spell per Domain level?

And how is this similar to the cloistered cleric, ive looked at the two the only thing thats similar is the bab and armor proficiency.

Also, the casting like a cleric.

Honestly, this isn't even a new class. It's a cleric with some alternate class features ("alternate" as in, MOAR)...

This is a cleric with free DMM abuse and moar spells. I don't see why you went to the trouble to rename it.

After taking in the constructive criticism thus far ive come to these additions:

Bonus Domain Spell: At level 10 the Priest gains one bonus domain spell slot to all spell levels currently known. It happens again at level 20 granting one bonus domain spell slot to all spell levels known though it does not cause the total number of domain spells to go over two.

Empowered Turning: At level 6 the priest gains the Empowered Turning feat which multiplies turning damage by 1.5 after all calculations.

Basically in agreement with Aran Banks.

Ideally, it should be difficult to make something that casts better than a regular cleric. It already has full spellcasting and DMM, which allow it to fight better than any martial class in the game through a combination of divine power (not to mention any other buffs you feel like throwing on it) and Persist Spell via DMM.

The fact remains, however, that due to the same effects that make it strong the cleric can also be easily outdone by an ACF that gives poor BAB but better spellcasting. That same combination mentioned above can be used to make this guy just as good in melee as a base cleric, and can be done better due to the extra turning attempts. Then, the bonus domains give you access to bonus spells that can include save-or-dies, which are always helpful.

In short, even with all the seemingly dead levels (with no class features other than spellcasting past level 10 in the original draft), this could still be CoDzilla without any trouble.

This is cleric+.

Compared to Cloistered Cleric it waits 4 levels to get the extra domain and gets 4 less skill points per level (which make Knowledge devotion worse) but gets an extra spell of every level and Extra Turning. It might have worse Fort saves, but really clerics already get more spells than generalist wizards and with their domain spell more than specialist wizard, do they really need more spells? It's a power boost for sure, because you can prepare a spell for one more contingency, or one more situation, but do they need the power boost?

Very well i can see now that this class is pointless, thankyou to all who posted.

Here's the high priest (http://dungeons.wikia.com/wiki/High_Priest_%283.5e_Class%29), which exchages 1 spell/day at every spell level, along with fort save and a BAB drop for some fun class abilities. It has spontaneous domain access instead of spontaneous healing.

That's about the minimum magnitude of change you will need.

Sooooooo what schtick do you want this class to follow? It seems like you want it to kill undead, and if that's your plan... well, just get rid of the cleric powers and make it turn undead with some positive energy goodness. If you want it to be a healer, I have an excellent class (http://dungeons.wikia.com/wiki/Restorer_%283.5e_Class%29). For pew-pew holy lasers and buff powers, you could look at the curator (http://www.tgdmb.com/viewtopic.php?t=49091).

Or, y'know, you could pick somehting in between. What are you looking for here?
