Greetings Playground, I have a player who is having trouble enjoying, RP wise, a wizard of his. Basically, he is playing a mildly Optimized Blaster (Focused on fire and nothing but, everything that isn't fire, he converts to fire). I ended up helping him through with the initial build, so he has little/no skill in the field of optimization.

He is mildly bored at the thought of just taking straight wizard levels and waiting for Archmage bores him. He's looking for an prestige class (doesn't care about power level of the class) that has a vast amount of RP value so that he can have a fun RP "plot" like the other party members.

I'm thinking of recommending the Elemental Savant, but am not sure what we could get from that, and how to do the "peaceable contact" with proper impact.

Details: He's 6th level, he is NG going on CG, and is an Old category human roleplaying the mentality of a 10 year old child (he is still developing RP skill). He is playing a Focused Specialist Evocationist, he likes using Sculpt Spell, and has banned Abjuration, Enchantment, and Necromancy.

Dragon Magazine generally allowed.

Give him Searing Spell from Sandstorm, and let him have his fun.

For a 6th level Wizard, there are several great prestige classes.

I wrote up a list for a player of mine recently and i'll post a few that your guy might be able to qualify for.

Master Specialist (CMage)- easy to enter in to

Mage of the Arcane Order (CArc) - requires Cooperative Spell and is a bit complicated, but has lots of flavor as a mage who is part of a vast order that is connected by their shared magic pool

Paragnostic Apostle (CC) - easy to enter in to. turns your arcane wizard into a holy arcane wizard

~

Some more powerful examples of PrCs include:

Dweomerkeeper (CDivine web enhancment)
Halruuan Elder (Shining South)
Incantrix (PGtF)
Initiate of the Sevenfold Veil (CArcane)
Sentinel of Bharrai (BoED)
Shadowcraft Mage (Races of Stone)
Tainted Scholar (Heroes of Horror)
Void Disciple

~

As far as favorful and not too weak prestige classes go, I would suggest:

Alienist - Magic and Aliens put together = tons of flavor

Sand Shaper (Sandstorm) - This PrC is better for sorcerers since they gain tons of free spells, but the class has some crazy fun features and is extremely flavorful. The wizard walks around with tons of sand that they can do all sorts of fun stuff with

Techsmither (Faiths and Pantheons) - I've always wanted to play this class. You get to build a construct called a Gondsman who follows you around and acts as your personal bodyguard. It's pretty cool.

*will add more as I think of them*

A while back was helping a friend come up with a background/reason for why a wizard was a blaster focused on fire.
Basic idea: He's from the glacial north, (past the artic circle), where the dark and the cold are the killers. Life requires light, and warmth. Both of which are provided by fire. Furthermore, most of the monsters which threatened life on a regular basis were heavily vulnerable to his fire spells.

Perhaps if you let him retcon his history into the above, it wouldn't much matter if he took wizard for the next 8 levels or not. He could have a good time just working from that.

Ummm, why does he need a PrC to have a hand in roleplaying the plot? He wouldn't need the Halruan Elder PrC to roleplay as a Halruan elder. Doesn't need to have levels in Spellguard of Silverymoon in order to have a vital role in protecting the city.

Full damage to things normally immune to fire
Wizard 3/ Master Specialist 2 / Elemental Savant 4/ Sacred Exorcist 1/ Silver Pyromancer (E:FN) 5 / Elemental Savant 5

Otherwise for half damage to things normally immune to fire
Wizard 3/ Master Specialist 4/ Elemental Savant 2/ Sacred Exorcist 1/ Silver Pyromancer 2/ Elemental Savant 8

Silver Pyromancer turns your fire damaging spells into half fire / half sacred damage at level 2 of the prestige class. At level 5 of the prestige class it turns your fire damaging spells into all sacred damage.

Well, its that he wants interesting class features other than a spell level, and wants something with interesting fluff associated with these class features. I earnestly would try to convince him that the build is fine as is, and agree with you on this, but I don't find his idea, or his foundings, unreasonable, and if it helps inch him into better creative thought and roleplaying, all the better.

one thing that might appeal to him, its the Bonded Summoner from the minitures handbook

it is a 1/2 casting class and you can get elemental resistance, turn into a fire elemental and get a fire elemental for a familiar, starting at medium size and going to elder.

its a class you can enter at level 5. IF hes all about fire having a fire elemental and having the option to turn into an elemental at level 10 of the class might interest him

Peaceable contact with a fire elemental is as easy as summoning one and talking to it in Ignan. I'd assume you could learn Ignan from most scholars who study the planes.

Mage of the Arcane Order could offer some RP potential. You could provide advice 'in character.' It may even be able to offer some experimentation with spells in a safe environment (ie, Blasting summoned monsters), plot hooks, not to mention the advantages of the PrC if the player wants to branch out his tactics a little.
