View Full Version : Spell-like Abilities per day, question [3.5]

If a creature entry says something like this:

Spell-Like Abilities: 1/day - lesser confusion (DC 14), dancing lights, detect chaos, detect good, detect evil, detect law, detect thoughts (DC 15), dispel magic, entangle (DC 14), permanent image (DC 19; visual and auditory effects only), polymorph (self only).
Per day, can the pixie use one of those abilities, or each of them a single time?

IRRELEVANT QUESTION:
Is there any reason that a victim of Entangle couldn't just cut the vines and carry on as normal? If not, isn't it kinda worthless, aside from possibly provoking an attack of opportunity? Or is it only useful against animals and other creatures without weapons?

Once each.

Re: entagle - because the spell doesn't give them that option. The entangled condition imposes a penalty on attack rolls, so it's easy enough to fluff the situation into saying that the entangling plants are restricting movement enough that trying to cut away at them is ineffective.

Once each. To your other question, yes they can cut themselves free. But it takes time to do that....which lets the caster run away or prepare something else sinister. It buys a little time, basically.

Thanks about the SLAs.

Oh, that makes sense. Thanks.

You can't cut yourself free by RAW. Entangle causes several vines to entangle and re-entangle. You could rule that you can't normally cut yourself free because there are so many vines that keep replacing themselves. A house rule might allow cutting yourself free if you have great cleave or otherwise destroy X vines while Y vines are replaced each round.
