I'm looking to run a PbP game with multiple DMs and CoDM's.

It's going to be very combat heavy, so the theory is that with multiple DM's updating monster/opponent movement the players will never be the ones left waiting leading to a fast game that holds interest.

Maps are the weak link.

Previous experience has shown that players greatly appreciate having maps showing where they and the monsters all stand, but map updating can be one of the more time consuming tasks for a DM. I once tried sharing the load by using inkscape and PMing map updates back and forth with a CoDM. It failed miserably.

So.

Has anyone successfully done map collaboration before, and if so how did it work?

Does anyone know of a web tool that could be easily updated by multiple people and made to work as a map utility kludge? Possibly a cloud-based spreadsheet utility that permits a customizable background?

Are there any recommended DM management utilities for keeping track of the hp/inventory/spell usages of several dozen creatures? (University student here. Must be free or cheap)

@V Oooo. That looks interesting. Thank!

Maptool (http://rptools.net/) for the win. If you want to pass it on to the next DM, all you'd need to do is pass the campaign file over.
