[Gray Mage]

It is time of the Newbloom festival in the little town of Elkmeadow. Everyone's having a good time, the kids are listening to old man Truce's tales, the older ones are playing in one of the numerous games, trying to win prizes to impress the girls. Food and drink are abundant this evening. Laughter and music are neverending. The flowers are blooming, this is indeed a time for new beginings.

A man dressed in a sweat-smeared travelers coat walks through the town. His wolf follows him. The cheery mood does little to allay his nagging sense of danger.

I walk to the market, and start looking for a message board, signpost, or sign showing the road to adventure.

Croix is sitting down at a table, looking over his spellbook, and eating a fine piece of meat, near oblivious to the happenings around him.

I walk over to Croix. You seem like you know magic, stranger. I do as well. Perhaps you would be interested in trade? My name's Kiiran Snowmoor. I come from a trader caravan. I see the meat, and immediately come to the decision that a potential ally is worth some disgust.

Well then, it seems we should ask around, or look for some monsters to slay that would further our knowledge and power. Kiiran says thoughtfully.

We should try and find out if there are any bounties on people or monsters near here. Always better than looting the corpses. Kiiran says thoughtfully. MAybe the leader of this town would know of it.

"Good idea." Croix says. "I've heard there's a bounty out on a gang of Bandits outside the town."

We could probably handle that.Kiiran replies, grabbing his quarterstaff from the table.But I still think that we should wait until the festival is finished, lest we get injured with no-one to help us.

A young elf, dressed in somewhat worn leathers that don't match the feathered cap on his brow, arrives at the market. He seems to be looking for something, but the furrow on his forehead appears to indicate the search has come up empty. At length, he approaches the cluster of misfit individuals at the little cafe on the corner. "Pardon me, but would any of you perhaps know where one might find work in this town?" His voice is high and light, with an almost boy-tenor quality. He absently rakes a few stray blond hairs over his pointed ears and considers each of the three in front of him with inquisitive green eyes. He seems particularly intrigued by the well-behaved wolf, which seems quite out of place in even a backwoods town like Elkmeadow.

A weird looking tall reptilian walks into the market, dressed in scale mail with a greatsword slung across his back. He looks about noticing the grouping of people and thinks, "This will either be good, or really bad." He walks over to the group, "Whats your meaning on gathering here?"

A discussion was occurring, Kiiran says but nothing about you. You seem to be a meat-shield, judging by the sword.

The young elf glances over his shoulder, his eyes widening ever so slightly at the imposing presence of the lizardman and his massive weapon. However, he can't help but snigger just a bit when the man calling himself Kiiran dismisses the scale-armored newcomer. He tries to cover the expression with one fine-fingered hand, but the sound still comes through clearly enough.

I suppose you find the scale-covered idiot to be amusing as well? Kiiran remarks. His main redeeming quality is the magic of his sword, but I suppose he can't create that. Thus, he shall be put in front. He seems to be the best-protected, but scales are no defence from magic the likes that I wield. Plus, my wolf hasn't been fed in a day. Hmmm

Croix is standing with the others, hands clasped behind his back.
"Allow me to introduce myself: I am Croix Baxterous the Third, arcane warrior, champion of Boccob." he finally says.

Well I knew you were a spellcaster of some sort, but not the rest. Kiiran stands up, and starts walking off. I'm off to start trading, that merchant seems to have some interesting things.

Soon you find a merchant with some tricky things, although few are magical. The only one that is similar to the ones you're looking for is a coin with two heads, which he is selling for 1 silver. He says that he might have some on his warehouse though, so if you'd be patient he'd return shortly.

No, no, fighters are fine. You, in particular, seem to have an air of stupidity. You shall be accepted, for some less intelligent than I might mistake you for an ugly lizard, which might cause them to attack you, elongating my lifespan. Kiiran smirks. You can't do this, can you? A ball of fire springs from my hand, and Kiiran slowly moves it toward the warrior. Plus, you haven't told me your name. From this, I conclude that you are an assassin sent by the elves.

I cast project flame.

"I learnt to that when I was what but a child." Croix says. "Ghost sound!". The others hear a horribile screaching sound. "Dare I ask you could do that?"

"Names are for friends and advisaries and dare you to threaten me again, or else I will cut you in half with a flick of my wrist."

"Prestigidation!" Croix says. The air suddenly becomes very cold.

I can burn your face off. And you shouldn't move. Kiiran says. The fire begins to reach your face. The heat slowly rises. Meh. I have proven my point. And there is a merchant I must meet...

Croix pulls out his longbow, and begins to examine it carefully.

"I am a warrior, born and bred. A warrior of the arcane." Croix says, not even looking up from the longbow.

"Until you can prove that, my thoughts won't change, but that one is a pure and through over confident idiot."

"Fine. Throw a coin in the air, and I can shoot it out of the sky with an arrow." Croix says taking out an arrow.

Seeing the oncoming trouble brewing, Alexander backs off a little. "I'm... Alexander..." he says quietly, slightly bowing while walking backwards.

I'm no mage, but a trader and druid. The land fuels my power.

And, I just owned you, so I have reason to be overconfident.

Anyway, I have spent far too long here, and the trader is growing bored. We should all have dinner.

"Well I just ate a good chunk of meat a few minutes ago, but I'm still hungry. I could be up for another dinner." Croix says.

"I don't eat food with un loving mortals." Shal turns around and walks away from the group walking up to a guard and hailing him.

Meh. The loss of such an idiot could hardly be detrimental to our party. Kiiran walks over to the merchant, and picks up the the items promised.

Shal sighs thinking "Some people just want to have their tongues cut out and hung from their foreheads.

Derr, no one would notice my sword, it's not out yet so it's just a handle which could look like anything.

Suddenly the music stops and the crowd in the distance starts to disperse and flee in panic. Kids are crying and the fear is evident.

OOC:So, what do you do? Although I can guess what.

"Party," asks Alexander, "did you say? I take it to mean more of an adventuring party, as to... all this." He makes a wide sweeping gesture with his arms. "If so, I would be interested in... huh. I've forgotten to eat again. Perhaps I can join you guys for dinner?"

Hearing the screaming Shal flips his shield over his shoulder onto is arm and grabs a weirdly shaped thing off his hip and with a flick of his wrist a weird 'beam' of magic shoots out forming a sword shape. Shal runs directly towards the fleeing humans.

Kiiran runs towards the cause of the commotion with his wolf. As soon as I am 40 ft away, I throw a dart, and close to melee.

On the center of the commotion, three centipedes, the biggest you have ever seen are alerted by your presence and ready themselves for the attack. One of them is closer, while the other two are a little way back. Because of the people's hurry in avoiding the scene, most of the obstacles like tables and chair's lie on the side.

The young elf, patently ignored by the more "mature" humans and their discussion with the lizardman, starts to wonder whether he should find another locale when the noise breaks out, indicating something amiss at the fairground. He trails the others to determine the source, drawing the dagger from his belt and fanning out to the right to keep his sight line clear.

Starting at H-11, move to E-11 and ready an action to throw the knife should a centipede approach within 10 feet.

Shal looks over, "Hey, young buck. What are your skills? I might be able to use your help over here"

The young elf smiles wolfishly from his almost flanking position. "Have knife, will stab. For profit, mostly--I'm not the sort who just kills for grins and giggles. Who invited these big bugs to the party?"

OOC:My computer is having some problems that are easily fixed, but I won't have acess to Maptools, so I won't be able to update the map soon.

One of the centipedes in the back(B3) moves towards the lizardman (stopping at G2), hitting him with it's powerfull bite (3 damage). The Sangheili can feel it's venon flowing in it's veins( make a fort save with DC 10 to avoid 1 dex damage).

The mage tries to hit the things with his bow, but his shot goes wide and he misses it completely.

The centiped that was right beside it also chooses the paladin as it's target (stops at H3). It sucessfully hits his soft flesh, but wasn't able to penetrate deep( 1 damage). ( make a fort save with DC 10 to avoid 2 dex damage).

Envyn needs to tell me if he'd like an attack roll or not misses his intended target, his dagger hitting the monster's hard shell.

Kiiran hits, almost killing the last centipede, it seems like it can't go much longer. His wolf, however, isn't so lucky. And needs to be placed in the map.

Alexander readies his crossbow, ready to fire when needed.

The last centipede moves to G7 and tries to hit the druid, but fails.

Shal'Vadume managed to ignore the poison, but doesn't seem to want to attack.

The centipede that was right in front of Cake tries to hit him again, but misses.

Maxios' arrow hits the centipede that was fighting the druid, killing it.

The second centipede has better luck, and manages to eat a bit of Cake (2damage and should make a fort save or get 1 dex point of damage).

Without a flanking buddy, Envyn's dagger throw goes south and fails to hit home.

Neither Kiiran nor his wolf manages to land a hit on the centipedes.

Alexander's shot strays from the intended course and misses.

Cake's swing doen't connect with the vermin.

It's because an arrow isn't loaded in a bow, but a bolt is in a crossbow. They don't work in the same way, so the loading process is diferent: bow is a free action, crossbow is a move one.

Cake, you missed in your crit, but you did do a normal attack though that hits. I'm pretty sure you slayed the centipede beast

One of the centipedes manages to hit Cake again, and he can feel the poison flowing in his veins, trying to restrain his movements ( 1HP damage and DC10 fort save or get 3 dex damage).

The wizard's arrow flies high, much higher than he wanted to, passing over the centipede's head. (Maxios: You forgot the penalty for firing in melee)

The other centipede also strikes the fighter, dealing 4 HP damage and make the save for 2 dex damage.

Envyn's complete lack of luck makes him fail one more time.

The centipedes prove themselves to be fierce oponents, being able to avoid Kiiran's, his wolf's and Alexander's attacks. (Dragon and Zyborg: See my note for Maxios, because you need the penalty for firing into melee as well.)

The human warrior, however, hits one of the centipedes in a wide arc, completely bisecting it. (You can make another attack because of the cleave feat if you wish to.)

Envyn is practically cursing out loud as he switches the grip on his dagger while moving to flank the remaining centipede. He drives an overhand strike down, trying to break through the slithery insect's natural defenses.

Basically Cake, if you slay a monster, you can immediantly make an attack against another monster right next to you.
Also, you have to make 2 saving throws. Basically, roll a D20 and add your foritude modifier.

Croix reloads another arrow, and fires at the centipede.

The last standing centipede tries again to hit Cake, but misses.

Croix's arrow hit the ground a dozen meters away from the intended target.

Envyn hits the centipede directly in its guts, it looks like it's almost dead now.

Finally, the feral wolf finishes the job as he bites the vermin's torso.

Envyn grunts something to the effect of satisfaction as he cleans off his dagger and retrieves the two that had missed their mark. "Curious, it seems the wildlife didn't get their invite to the party. I suppose it's only natural for them to be angry." He glances around. "Anyone hurt?"

[zyborg]

"Hurt? Only my pride," Alexander sighs, looking sullen. "I'm not cut out to be a warrior, am I? Just a bard, I guess. If you need music for your journey, I might be a boon. Otherwise..."

[Maxios]

"Ha!" Croix laughs triumphantly as he kicks one of the centipede corpses.
"I'm fine." he say to Envyn.

"Well that was easier than expected"Cake said.

[Maxios]

"Indeed it was." Croix said.

[Gray Mage]

The crowd looks at you in amasement. From one of the sides an old man with a long white beard limps towards your direction. His dark green robes are dirtied and and he's leaving a small trail of blood as he aproaches.

"I thank you, strange friends, for disposing of those awfull vermin. How may I call our saviours?"- the elder asks.

[Dragon Elite]

I am Kiiran Snowmoor, good friend. Kiiran says, bowing.

[Mordae]

"Envynthiarus the wanderer, at your service." The young elf bows deeply, doffing his feathered cap in deference to the leader.

[zyborg]

"You probably don't care about my name," Alexander sighs, "As I was useless. I'll say it anyways, just for the sake of completion. I'm Alexander Grobbs. Pleased to meet you, sir..."

[Maxios]

"I am Croix Baxtero, warrior mage." Croix says. "By the gods man, you're injured!"

[Gray Mage]

The elder looks at his wound in his leg. "Those centipides sure did get a taste of me. Thanfully my bodyguard- he points towards a young blond man in the crowd-got me out of that situation quickly. Now, how could I thank the heroes that saved the night? Perhaps I could invite you for dinner in my house, and maybe give to each a small reward?"

[Maxios]

"That'd be much appreciated." Croix says.

[zyborg]

"Your bodyguard, eh?" Alexander eyes the old man suspiciously. "You... you are an important man, aren't you? Not that it matters if you aren't, we still need to get that wound taken care of." Then the old man invites them to dinner. "Uh... that would be great, sir... are you sure that you don't mind? I mean, having to share your food, your lodgings for awhile, after all this stress?"

[TheMagicalCake]

"Are you sure your ok? Those centapieds destroyed you"

[Dragon Elite]

Both of hose would be apreciated, after this stress. Kiiran says. But first, do tell us your name?

[Gray Mage]

"Don't worry about this wound, my bodyguard will take care of it soon."
When inquired for his name, the man laughs, "Hohoho, sorry I forgot to introduce myself, these kind of things come with the age. Come, walk with me." The old man leads you away from the crowd, that is beginning to revive the party, and his bodyguard trails behind, making sure you won't try anything funny. Behind you it's possible to start to hear the start of the flutes and lutes from the town's bards. As you walk, the man says,"My name is Drake, but if possible I'd like for you to call me your 'employer'."

[Mordae]

Envyn quirks one eyebrow at this last comment. "Employer? Pardon me, sir, but I didn't expect that driving off random vermin from a town's party would constitute a job solicitation or interview. However, I take it that your locale lacks a substantial guard force as none responded to the distress of the partygoers." He looks to the others to see if they find the situation as odd.

[Gray Mage]

"These are good points, Mr. Envynthiarus, but I don't want your talents wasted fighting vermin. As for our local guard force, I'm afraid that they are, how is it said, not in their best shape, with the constant attacks. You see, that wasn't the first time this peacefull little town has been attacked, and the 'guards' are nothing more than the local youth, most of them didn't have much fighting experience besides the ocasional barroom brawl. As for it not being an interview, I'm afraid I don't have any other options at the time."

[zyborg]

"So, you assume we are just going to work for you without ever being asked," asks Alexander, though not seeming too upset. "That's not always the best way to make a deal, but... what exactly did you have in mind?"

[Gray Mage]

"I don't see how I'm assuming that, as I'm currently asking you."

[zyborg]

"No, no," Alexander sighs lightheartedly. "I didn't mean you weren't asking. I was just referring to the somewhat subtle, off-handed way you asked at first. I don't mean to seem rude, either. I apologize if it comes across that way. So, what exactly did you want to hire us for?"

[Maxios]

"Whatever you hire us for, it'd be an honor for me to get it done." Croix tells Drake.

[Dragon Elite]

"I'm up for a challenge." Kiiran says, sheathing his darts.

[Gray Mage]

You see, there is an old abandoned temple in the forest nearby. This temple was famous because of the library it had, and many rare books are just standing there, rotting. We can not have that, do we?

[zyborg]

Alexander's eyes lit up at the mention of 'rare books'. "So," he asks, "what do you want us to do there? Secure the temple, retrieve the books, or something else along those lines? I would be happy to help, but... I probably would be late to return..."

[Dragon Elite]

"What are these books about? I don't know about my comrades here, but I wouldn't dare try and retrieve some tomes of Necromancy." Kiiran says.

[Mordae]

Envyn nods. "Indeed, I am quite willing to work for any purpose other than evil, should the recompense be sufficient. What are your terms, Master Drake?"

[Maxios]

"Count me in." Croix tells Drake.

[Gray Mage]

"I only need an especific tome, but don't you worry, its not a necromancy one. This book is guarded in a special room that should be located in the back of the library. There are some other books that could serve as bonus, but they're not essencial to me. As for a reward, how does a gem worth 50 gold pieces each? Of course, anything else you may find in the temple may be claimed by you."

[zyborg]

Alexander's grin grew even bigger. "That sounds perfect," Alexander says, "but how about a counter-offer. Instead, how about 60 gold each, but you can keep my gold? Surprisingly, I'm not in it for the money." After all, he thought, I'd probably spend it on strange tomes, and if none interest me, I could sell them for more than 50 gold.

[Dragon Elite]

I agree, the knowledge would be too good to pass up. However, I think that we need to know a bit more about the danger level near the temple. If the books are as valuable as you proclaim them to be, why haven't they been taken already? Kiiran inquires. Of coures, one can never have too much gold. He thinks to himself.

[Maxios]

"The gem's fine with me." Croix tells Drake.

[Gray Mage]

The old man is surprised by the bard's offer."....if that is what you wish, mister Alexander....."

As you walk, you can now see a beautifull manor in the distance. Along the path you are travelling sturdy trees form an arch, blocking the moonlight.
"Ah, we're almost there. As for you question, mister Snowmoor, there is in fact a reason. You see, although the books are valuable, not everyone can understand that. There is a pesky group of bandits- he says that last word with visible disgust, spitting afterwards-inside the temple. If it was not so, the books would already be mine."

[Dragon Elite]

"Ah." Kiiran says, shaking his head. "Bandits are just a nuisance, and we shall set off to take care of them tommorow, if my comrades here agree."

[Mordae]

Envyn smiles as the other shoe drops. "Now we see the twist. I agree that bandits should be easily dealt with, provided we are given enough information--numbers, habits, and other such sundry details as are available." He trails along behind the host, deferent but still somewhat suspicious of the scene.

[zyborg]

"Bandits, huh," Alexander says. "They sure are... wait... if we go in there and take books, doesn't that mean WE are bandits? I don't know... but what the heck. I'll do it!"

[Maxios]

"Bandit, eh? Croix says. "No problem. I used to be in the city guard of Da'hnk Arpork. I dealt with bandits every day."

[Gray Mage]

"No, my bard friend, it wouldn't be banditri to revover those tomes. There aren't many of them, I'd say about ten, give or take. Now, I don't particulary care what you do with them, just bring me the tome.

Now, are there any other question?"

[Maxios]

"None part-Wait! Are there anything else living in the ruins?" Croix asks.

[Gray Mage]

"Not that we're aware of."

[Maxios]

"Alright. Just making sure that when we go there we're expecting bandits and don't get ambushed by orcs." Croix tells Drake.

[zyborg]

"Hmm..." Alexander ponders for a second, then speaks. "Croix... good thinking." He then turns to the job offerer. "Are these bandits... human?"

[Gray Mage]

"It appears they aren't, althought I don't see how that's relevant."

[Maxios]

"Wait! They ARE orcs!" Croix asks Drake.

[TheMagicalCake]

"You sure Croix."

[Maxios]

"Well most likely they're orc, but they may be goblins."

[Mordae]

Envyn shrugs. "Well, be that as it may, I'm sure we can handle the challenge. After all, we only took minutes to dispatch a few harmless centipedes..." His smile carries with it the irony of his words, and he crosses his arms to rest both hands on the daggers at his belt.

[Dragon Elite]

"But I should rest and regain my spells before moving on. Anyway, it's getting dark. We'll leave early in the morning, tomorrow." Kiiran says, leaning on his quarterstaff.

[zyborg]

"If you can deal with my lack of skill," Alexander quips, "I'd be glad to help out. I think my services as a Bard might be better than my services as an archer."

[Gray Mage]

"So I assume there won't be any more questions then? "

[Dragon Elite]

"Nope." Kiiran replies.

[zyborg]

"Other than where this temple actually is," the bard replies, "no other questions from me. I assume that this 'forest' isn't hard to miss, but depending on the size, finding the temple might be a bit of trouble.

[Gray Mage]

"Oh yes, of course. Here, let me give you guys a map to it. It also shows some of the entrances of the temple, but there isn't a layout for the inside. Now, may I ask you if you'd join me for supper, as was promised?"

[Dragon Elite]

"Certainly. It always pays to know your employer." Kiiran says. I know, I know, terrible pun.

[zyborg]

"I agree," Alexander says, nodding. "Your invitation will not be refused - by me, at least, and I don't see anyone else rejecting it."

[Maxios]

"Supper's nice. I was in the middle of eating a ham when those oversized bugs attacked." He tells Drake.

[Mordae]

Envyn bows. "Your generosity is most kind. I shall be happy to accept your invitation."

[Gray Mage]

The man escorts you inside the manor, entering a grand hall. Marble walls surround you and a number of finely made vases decorate the room, two corridors lead from both sides of the room, while in front there is a large double door, a double pair of curved stairs connect this floor to the second. A butler welcomes you and usher you to the small passagewayto the right, while your employer ascends the stairs. His bodyguard, however continues to follow you, as silent as a mountain.
You finally reach the dinning room, where there is a long table set for eight persons.
"Please have a seat, gentlemen. The food will be served shortly."-the butler says before he leaves the room through a side door.

[Dragon Elite]

"It seems that this employer of ours is quite rich." Kiiran says, taking in the room.

[Maxios]

"Fancy." Croix says looking around. He then sits down.

[zyborg]

"This place is nice," Alexander remarks. "Thank you for the invitation." He sits down, and glances at his new 'friends'.

[Gray Mage]

The food arrives minutes after you're seated, as promised. As oposed as one would think, it's nothing fancy, being a simple roasted beef.

[Dragon Elite]

"I don't suppose you might have a light salad or somesuch?" Kiiran inquires while eying the beef suspiciously.

[zyborg]

"This looks delicious," Alexander says, eying the beef. "So, do we serve ourselves, or does someone serve us?"

[Maxios]

The food arrives minutes after you're seated, as promised. As oposed as one would think, it's nothing fancy, being a simple roasted beef.

Croix tears into his beef. "This is good!" he says, his mouth full of food.

[Mordae]

Envyn accepts his portion with equanimity, carving it into smaller bits and regarding the others with a casual eye. "I suppose now that we shall be working together, we had best know one another's strengths so that we may be effective in battle. As you saw in our fight with the centipedes, I specialize in daggers, both thrown and thrusted. I work best when I can stand opposite an ally against the same enemy, for my knives will find the most sensitive places that way."

[Dragon Elite]

"Quite a good idea. I am attuned with nature, and I can easily entangle our enemies. However, the grasping plants will try to grab us, too." Kiiran says, still waiting for his salad.

[zyborg]

After finally serving himself some roast beef and after eating some, Alexander sighs. "I'm good at... playing music." With that statement, he takes out his guitar and starts playing a tune. Perform: Stringed instrument - [roll0]

"Oh, and I have some skills in battle as a Bard..."

[Gray Mage]

Alex does prove that he's quite good at playing, his music soothes the spirit and is really pleasant.

"Oh yes, master druid, I'll see that it's provided right now."- the butler says, his voice is low and can barely be heard. Again the food arives as promised.

[Dragon Elite]

"Thank you, good man. Kiiran says, slowly eating the salad.

[Maxios]

Croix eats the new food in a minute. He's a hungry, hungry, battle-mage.
