Spell Duel: Marquis de la Nuit vs. Ghautar Bloodwing

Marquis de la Nuit - Beelzebub1111: This human is about 5'10" tall, has deeply tanned skin, Brown eyes, and blond hair. He dresses simply in loose, bright white clothing similar to that of a monk's garb consisting of a white vest, fingerless gloves, and loose pants tied with a sash. There is a silver ring with what appears to be an onyx gem on his left hand, and a silver wand with a red crystal at its tip on his belt. He keeps a light crossbow strapped to his back.
Ghautar Bloodwing - theterran: Reaching a height of 5'2", Ghautar is lean, and not terribly muscular. Like all Illumian, runes swirl about his head. A cape billows behind him as he walks. It is a light gray, and is very inconspicuous, though there are a few runes on the back of the cape that look similar to those whirling about his head. On his head, he wears a circlet, once sparkly, now seems somewhat tarnished. On his nose sits a pair of spectacle glasses, and these as well are small and unassuming, just as the one who wears them.
His robes are a dark rust colored red, with the crest of the Bloodwing Cabal emblazened on the front. Around the robe seems to be a makeshift belt of sorts. There is a pouch attached to the belt, and a stick haphazardly stuck there as well. Most of his belongings seem old, as if he acquired them second hand.

Moseys on up to W10, and stretches while he waits for his opponent to show.

Ghautar

Ref Only
Nothing to see here, just want to make him paranoid :smallcool:

Strolling into the arena, Ghautar plops down in D11 to wait out the hour...

Marquis
Marquis gives a friendly wave,"Greetings Ghautar, I was beginning to think that you wouldn't show." thinks for a moment. "Would it be impolite for me to ask what kind of arcanist you are?"

Oops, this will happen if there's no other interaction...

((While the two combatants wait, the referee on one of the roofs frequently looks at a golden pocket-watch and refreshes the wall of force effect in M/N7 to M/N14, too high for either of you to jump or look over.

This goes on for quite some time, and the referee calls out, "When this wall of force ends in about another minute, feel free to start the duel."))

You basically have another minute to prepare, either mentally or physically, whatever you like.

I'm guessing the two of you just go start->finish, and not one or more rounds in between to rest? (that could very well be done if you want...)

:smalleek: "Arcanist!?! Don't tell me I got in the wrong line again!"

Ghautar chuckles to himself...

"Seriously though, I'm a specialist! In fact, you could say that I'm rather focused as well!"

((If you can't notice the spell being cast in any way (due to the fact that you can't be seen and no verbal components in this case), you cannot attempt to identify the spell, s you have no knowledge of it being cast))

The referee stays on the roof of one of the buildings in the middle, stoic in expression, looking back and forth from side to side slowly.

I have LoS on you, so I see you step back and draw the wand...which provokes an AoO from the demon (10ft range)

[roll0]
[roll1]

I didn't look to see what was on the Wand, but assuming it's some kind of See Invisibility or something, you see me in:
P-11.

((You guys are going good, you can do that kind of stuff because it speeds it along, I'll just check in from time to time and give rulings or disallow things. Sometimes have the ref character actually do something.))

The referee nods, not really to anyone in particular, and looks amused at the appearance of the Demon.

Opposed Checks

An opposed check is a check whose success or failure is determined by comparing the check result to another character’s check result. In an opposed check, the higher result succeeds, while the lower result fails. In case of a tie, the higher skill modifier wins. If these scores are the same, roll again to break the tie.

The referee does nothing exceptional but stand up from the previously sitting position, as the duel begins to become a lot more decisive by the second.

Beelzebub1111
2010-10-21, 03:44 PM
It was a close one....I'll admit. If that Level check succeeded you would have been dead on the spot. I use the magic of the countered spell to cast one of my third level or lower spells as part of that immediate action..

Cute and Evil
2010-10-21, 04:23 PM
((Ghautar is rewarded the XP and GP stated in the OP, and you know you can always ask for a rematch, though I won't stand for you guys abusing this to let each other win every other time and level up fast, that's illegal as of now.))

As Marquis de la Nuit falls, bleeding, the referee jumps up, casting a spell of his own, which reveals to be Sanctuary, and the summoned animals are instantly disabled in their attack of the fallen caster. The referee further goes up to the duo, dispels the summoned monsters, and declares the match as over. "The duel has come to an end, Ghautar Bloodwing comes out as the winner." After that, he gets the Marquis' bleeding to stop, preventing his actual death.

((Some notes on the match: It's a nonlethal duel, and it said in the guidelines/rules that summoned animals should attack with nonlethal damage, though I presume you didn't realize this terran. Even if you did, I would let it happen, it would only affect your rep. :smallwink:)0

((Weapons that normally deal lethal damage made to deal nonlethal damage get a -4 to attack. This is also the case for weapons that normally deal nonlethal damage made to deal lethal damage. Despite you not knowing this, I doubt it would've gone a lot differently, you could've verbally instructed them to deal nonlethal damage, and probably still end up with the same result. :smallwink:))

theterran
2010-10-21, 05:44 PM
((Alright, from now on I'll instruct my Demons to deal nonlethal damage...I doubt they'll be too happy though...:smallwink:))
