Horses in my campaigns have always pretty much functioned as the bus you take to the dungeon, since I'm a city-slicker who doesn't know the first thing about them.

Is there any kind of "DM's guide to horses" that would help me go into more horsey detail?

They're big, insane animals that are more trouble than they're worth unless you have servants to take care of them.

Also, wikipedia is your friend (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horse).

They're insane and plotting against us.

Probably not what you're looking for, but I wrote a handbook for mounted characters (http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php?topic=7414).

Horses for Dummies, or whatever other non-fiction book you can get from your local library.

Also Horses are for Dummies. Let me tell you how to make a small fortune with horses. Start with a large one.

What exactly are you looking for? Descriptions of real horses? Behavior? In-game statistics?

I lol'ed.

@ OP: Why do you want more detail? "Bus to the dungeon" sounds like all you need to me, and if your players are happy too... if you make horses complicated they'll just switch to teleporting, mount spells, or hiring a caravan.

By "detail", I don't really mean making horses more complicated, just little tidbits of horse lore to put into descriptions for added verisimilitude.

Well, I'm just starting a new E6 campaign -- which means the PCs won't really ever outgrow mundane mounts -- in a frontier setting. Think Keep on the Borderlands meets Deadwood (alas, with less swearing, due to the forum's filter ;) ). Plus, one of the players is going with a mount-focused character.

I actually found a pretty decent Writer's Guide to Horses (http://www.lrgaf.org/guide/writers-guide.htm) just now, which seems like it'll suit me just fine.

Well, the Mount spell (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/mount.htm) is low-level, but I see your point.

Novel-wise, Mercedes Lackey seems to love horses too.

Well, you know, closest thing to sex with a nonthreatening male and all that jazz.

I got more of that vibe from her bird descriptions, especially in the gryphon novels. Skandranon's books in particular left me feeling vaguely unsettled after the third paragraph spent describing his majestic appearance.

But I digress. Jordan tended to describe horses in pretty fine detail as well.

They have massive eyeballs. Stallions don't have nipples. (And are the only mammals that don't.)

All right, I'm out of horse facts.

Horses act like a combinations of cats and a dogs, but with slower reaction times.

For the reference, you win at everything forever (not like you didn't already do that to be honest).
