It might be a little bit early for some people still, but I wanted to see all of you crazy roleplayers and the wacky costumes you come up with this year.

I was in the process of making inquiries towards starting this thread.

No worries, though, saves me the boggle. And I'll have the snappies of my own as soon as I get my hands on a camera not soaked in vaseline.

Backstory requested.

The story is illegal in eighty countries. Like, the actual act of telling the story. Or maybe it was just a colorful way to say, "the only camera I've got, my webcam, is crazy blurry."

Theater stuff prevented me from having time to acquire a good costume. With stuff in my room I think I can put together an old-timey journalist outfit (Just a suit and a hat I have with a card that says "Press" in it). I have some other ideas, but they're all basically set-ups for a quick joke that requires an explanation.

I threw something together in a half hour for a Halloween party. I think it looked not bad. I'm a half mutant type thing.

Awesome costume Jack Zander, very convincing and a cool concept too. I'm going to a costume party this year but I haven't actually gotten the final piece of my costume yet (borrowing it off a friend) so can't take any preliminary photos.

This one is a little better lit.

I'm planning on shaving the beard and letting the mustache grow in about halfway. Its really hard to tell in the pictures but it's there a little bit already.

This year is the first when I'll be unable to trick or treat myself, so instead I'm giving out candy. I WANTED to be the Wicked Witch of the West, but my mother suggested that it could make children cry in terror (would've made me cry in terror had I gone up to a door and found the dog-threatener herself staring down at me). So instead:

MORWEN, the nice, and rather sensible, witch from the Enchanted Forest Chronicles!

This shall be done with the aid of a black dress, glasses, and a stuffed cat. :D

I made a vault dweller costume, had troubble with the 3 in 13 so I had to make it a vault suit from vault 101.

My son is Link, the costume is all hand stitched, I did most of the shirt and all of the hat, my wife did the rest of the shirt, some fakeout boots, and the white link wears underneath is sweatpants to keep warm. The blue nerf sword looks like the master sword and we picked up a shield for him at a mideval fair... Looks awesome.

Pics when I get them.

Aw crap, Halloween is this weekend, isn't it? I need to get my costume together. If I can find a lab coat, I'm going as genderbent Medic from Team Fortress 2, and if I can't, umm... Not sure. But I actually have plans this year, so I can't just wear my Trek Shirt and be a random crew member again.

Okey dokey. I've been working on my costume for about a month now. See, my school has a costume competition each year. Last, I made a Venom costume. It turned out okay.

This year, however...this year will be amazing.

My real costume this year is Ezio, complete with hidden blades. Yeah.

But the real fun will be on halloween at my house. While my wife is giving out candy, I'm going to hide in the bushes with my pumpkin mask and chainsaw. Then, when the kids are walking away, I fire up the chainsaw and chase them. Oh yeah.

Amusingly enough, I actually carry more weaponry than that on my person when in costume.

A full sword, sharpened and carbon steel, a similarly sharpened carbon steel dagger, three pocket knives, and a flagon of mead.

Yes, a flagon of mead is a weapon. Don't you go to bars? :smalltongue:

My proposed costume isn't really supposed to be scary. At all, especially given that I am probably the least intimidating person to ever walk the earth. For me, dressing up is more of a "I may be too old for Trick-or-treating, but at least I put in the effort of assembling a costume, unlike my peers who just threw a cape on over whatever they were already wearing. Candy?"

Ah yes. I too am too old to trick or treat but will hopefully get away with it. I mean my costume cost me:

$20 Hat
$20 Shirt
$30 Cover-alls
$30 Airsoft Ak47
$50 First Aid Kit
$-- Self-assembled Boomer Bile
$-- Bottle of Peelz, given to me by the school nurse
$-- Borrowed Crowbar

So, that's $150 before we factor in shipping and handling... glad to know I have my priorities straight. :smalltongue:

a good old fashioned lady of disrepute costume is always worth a laugh (if the costumed individual is male).

all you need is grapefruits, anything else helps but the grapefruits are the essential thing.

Is it wrong to say you might be mistaken for Zoro?

I can understand being mistaken for Zoro to someone who saw Zoro without ever seeing The Princess Bride. To people who know who Westley is, I think the costume is pretty much instantly recognized.

When I was making my costume and buying the items I needed, I had to explain to Pay-Less Shoe Store why I needed help sizing the most expensive pair of women's boots for myself. The clerk looked at me funny after I asked him if he ever saw The Princess Bride. I gave up and just told him my character looks a lot like Zoro. He leaned forward and said, "I understand" then wrote his number on my receipt. Oh well...

That Artificer costume is what I went as last year. I modeled it mostly on the example artificer from the 3.5 eberron handbook and Harry Dresden of "The Dresden Files".
on the costume was:

a sling full of wands (light up) a blasting rod a bandoleer of potions (food colored water) a scroll box tied to my belt 4 rings (I took the extra rings feat) an amulet a staff with a caged raven and a backpack with maps and a bedroll.

If I haven't already done so, here's my Medic costume from two years past:

I'm going to be a caveman this year. I've already found a fur-patterned type of fabric that just needs a hole cut in it for the head and now all I need is a sufficiently big stick to serve as a club.

Kind of fitting, considering I spent half the summer working on an Ice Age digsite.

So I'm just here wondering if any of you cosplayers know where one might find unusual sewing patterns? I'm looking for a Venetian Masquerade "Zendale" which is a type of satin hood worn over a cloak, and I'm finding it near impossible to find one.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

And more on topic, last year I went as Rorschach. The costume was pretty cool, but someone stole my hat. Off my head. In the middle of a crowded hallway. Directly underneath a security camera. I never did get reimbursed for that hat...

I also frequently cosplay as a zombie, as Seattle is inexplicably obsessed with them, and therefore holds huge numbers of zombie events with massive turnouts. I'm part of the world record for largest zombie walk ever.

Also, the OP is clearly the Dread Pirate Roberts. I got it immediately.

The lack of girlfriend is a bit of an issue here. If only the simple "club someone over the head and drag to cave" days were here again...*j/k, as I'm not that kind of a jerk*

Speaking of which, I managed to get a club, which was, as in the PHB, so easy to find and fashion that it cost nothing at all. Now to hunt some mammoths!

Dress in all pink and duct tape a shoe to your head. You are now chewed bumble gum.

Or wrap yourself sticky side out in duct tape and attach candy wrappers and popcorn kernels all over yourself. You are now a movie theater floor.

*sigh* I envy you guys all so much. We don't have Halloween here. :smallfrown: And I'm one of those people who loves to cosplay but never have a chance to. We do have carnaval in February but that's freezing degrees so you can't really wear fun outfits without freezing because the fabric is like tissue paper.

:smallfrown::smallfrown::smallfrown: I wanna celebrate Halloween too, I even have an Aqua outfit in my closet just sitting there.

You can always wear something underneath it to keep your warm, or stay inside (or inside a bar).

Alternatively, don't be unhindered by the seasonal festivities and limitations of your local culture! Dress up anyway!

...

When one of my brothers worked at a newspaper his Halloween "costume" was Clark Kent.

He wore a shirt and tie like usual, but he had a Superman t-shirt on underneath.

If you lived here you couldn't wear outfits without freezing either. Its usually between -15 an -20C at Halloween.

It's always freezing here in Minnesota on Halloween. I eventually learned to always dress up as someone who wore loose clothing, that way a jacket goes under the costume. Then you're just fat!Whoever you're dressing up as.

Saskatchewan. Every year it's always freezing, and don't get me started about all the snow.

Actually I don't think it quite gets down to -20 most years. Probably -15 at the coldest and that's in the evening, so I guess I was exaggerating a bit. My point still stands though.

See, Florida has the opposite problem. We're still creeping in to the upper 80s F, if not 90s. I'm going as the White Rabbit this year which will consist of a shirt, vest, and jacket (plus the necessary ears, pocket watch and umbrella). This will be...sweltering. Plus the humidity.

I will be keeping a small vial of fake blood on me so if I need to take off the jacket and vest, I can dab some around my mouth and go as Bunnicula*.

But yeah, it's great for the sexy!Character costumes, but sucks for modest folks like myself. My courtesan costume included an ankle length skirt...it's depressing when you're actually going to Halloween as a whore and yet look like one of the least whoreish women there.

So stoked about the White Rabbit. :D

I'd post a pic if I had one decent...

But here goes. Imagine it... black jeans, black shoes, black t-shirt.
Black hawaiian shirt, open, covered in palm trees and coconuts (my lovely genuine rayon shirt with wood buttons. Le squee.) under a black toggle coat. Yes, black is nice.
Fingerless canoe gloves. Black flat-cap pulled down over one eye with a 2 of spades pinned to it. And other crap.

Carrying a small paddle with symbols (elemental, alchemical, and astrological) drawn on it.
Wearing 4 belts.

And I said I was an alchemist.
Yeah.
Mostly I just ran around and hit people with the paddle. I shouted in their ears that they were now TURRRRNED TO GOLLLLLDDDDD, played a victory guit---um, paddle solo... and paddled away.
And I fought a leprechaun.
Yeah, by "alchemist" I meant "excuse to be an idiot".
I actually only wore it to my school-day-where-you-wear-your-costume-day thing.
Tonight I handed out candy, sitting on the porch in a sweater blasting my guitar at people.

Giving away all the chocolate Pez (ugh) and chocolate Tootsie Rolls (overrated). Keeping aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaall the other-flavored Rolls and Pez to myself.

If you notice, I actually have a denim jumpsuit. Most people that dress up like ellis just wear jeans. xD

So, I went around collecting spare change for UNICEF, like I planned to do. But so many people insisted on giving me candy anyway that I ended up with about two pounds of candy as well as however much money I earned.

Now, as promised, pictures! Weaponry and costume both (I take my costuming very seriously, you see). Word of warning: these were taken approx 10 minutes ago by someone (me) who has no skill with cameras at all; also there may be a mouse/laptop in the background of a few. YE BE WARNED.

Also, lots of large pictures ahead. YE BE WARNED2.

First, the accoutrements (ie. the bladed weaponry). I carry all three of these on me when in full costume:

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u250/bloodydoves/PA310044.jpg

The bigun:

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u250/bloodydoves/PA310048.jpg
This is a one-handed blade I picked up from my Dad a short time ago. She's the main combat weapon here... or would be, save for two issues. First, she's not sharpened, and I lack the money to have it done professionally and the time to do it myself. Second, and more importantly, she wasn't stored well by her first owner (not my Dad), and so has some corrosion along the blade. Now, she is a show piece. 440 carbon steel though, so if I was to fix her up and sharpen her, she'd be combat ready.

The middle child:

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u250/bloodydoves/PA310047.jpg
Got this one as a kid. Stainless steel, she's a showpiece. She's damn sharp though and can cut just by touching her. Not sure why she was sharpened so much, but there you have it. She's at my right side usually (the bigun is at the left, as you'll see later). I don't wear her in the following photos.

My baby:

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u250/bloodydoves/PA310045.jpg
Just bought this one like two weeks ago. 440 carbon, originally unsharpened, but Dad and I put an edge on her in an afternoon. Now, she's wicked sharp. I wear her at my right, but not in the following photos. I love this dagger so much it hurts.

Now, the actual costume. Understand that what you're about to see is entirely homemade (save the weapons and my jeans, since I've not gotten around to acquiring good pants yet).

Level 1:

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u250/bloodydoves/PA310049.jpg
Here we have the vest, shirt, a 100% pure turkish silver chain I wear with the costume, and a great look at the staff (also homemade).

Level 2:

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u250/bloodydoves/PA310050.jpg
Little blurry, sorry. This is the above, but with the bigun added to my left side.

Level 3:

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u250/bloodydoves/PA310051.jpg
God, blurry again. D: Sorry folks. This is the above, but with my cloak included, which I'm quite proud of. It's a badass cloak, IMO, homemade, tough as nails, lasts through basically everything and then some (worn the thing through hailstorms and thunder and lightning before, so far, she's undamaged).

I recall seeing news that K-Mart as an independent entity ceased to exist quite awhile ago. Perhaps Sears is running then as a front or somesuch. That happens from time to time, and would make a lot of sense. Just was surprising, is all.

Are you talking about the defunct office building that nobody uses anymore, or the Sears tower? The one is rather pathetic but indicative of the downfall of Detroit and environs, the other is a freaking huge office building.

Also, I have heard it alleged that K-mart bought Sears rather than the other way around. Don't know the details though. At any rate, K-mart still exists rather muchly.

... Thetsy, that is epic.

Thanks . I'm pretty sure its my favourite costume I've ever done. The only problem was as the night went on the green hair spray began to run and ended up in my nice shirt, it hasn't come out yet and it looks like we're going to have to bleach it out and hope it doesn't damage it too much :smallfrown:.

Yeah these are great costumes and a nice choice for a matching duo, it looks like these would have been a bit of effort to get going or did you already have most of the stuff?
Yes, actually. The only thing we didn't have already was Krimm's tie. My mom used a bunch of white fabric that she seemed to have just lying around to make the toga. Krimm had found the branch for my staff a while ago, I just washed it and we used some of the white fabric as the cloth on top and burned it to look like a torch (one of Demeter's symbols). That whole process took maybe a half an hour.

We both have a lot of nifty accessories and articles of clothing lying around that naturally contribute to costumes. Like Krimm's terrifying goat skull staff; he made that years ago!

Also, everyone else who complimented our costumes: Thanks! We appreciate it!

We didn't even plan to be a matching duo, we sort of conceived of our costume ideas independently and then we were like, "Oh, you're going as that? I'm going as this! *brofist*"

Not sure which office building you're talking about. Also, Sears Tower is in Chicago, not Detroit. The RenCen is the main building of the Detroit skyline. The tall building with the GM logo on the top.

K-Mart headquarters isn't in Detroit, anyway. It's in Troy, about ten miles north of Detroit.

And no, K-Mart did not buy Sears. Sears bought K-Mart. Which means that K-Mart sells Craftsman stuff now, and Sears sells Joe Boxer stuff. Also, your Sears card can be used at K-Mart. And you can get a Sears card at K-Mart.

And thanks for the compliment, thetsyman!

Close up of the Dread Pirate Roberts.

Also, I got a hold of the book. I suggest everyone read it. This is by far my favorite passage:

William Goldman's The Princess Bride. Chapter 1: The Bride, page 47.

"I love you," Buttercup said. I know this must come as something of a surprise, since all I've ever done is scorn you and degrade you and taunt you, but I have loved you for several hours now, and every second, more. I thought an hour ago that I loved you more than any woman has ever loved a man, but a half hour after that I knew that what I felt before was nothing compared to what I felt then. But ten minutes after that, I understood that my previous love was a puddle compared to the high seas before a storm. Your eyes are like that, did you know? Well they are. How many minutes ago was I? Twenty? Had I brought my feelings up to then? It doesn't matter." Buttercup still could not look at him. The sun was rising behind her now;she could feel the heat on her back, and it gave her courage. "I love you so much more now than when you opened up your hovel door, there cannot be comparison. There is no room in my body for anything but you. My arms love you, my ears adore you, my knees shake with blind affection. My mind begs you to ask it something so it can obey. Do you want me to follow you for the rest of your days? I will do that. Do you want me to crawl? I will crawl. I will be quiet for you or sing for you, or if you are hungry, let me bring you food, or if you have thirst and nothing will quench it but Arabian wine, I will go to Araby, even though it is across the world, and bring a bottle back for your lunch. Anything there is that I can do for you, I will do for you; anything there is that I cannot do, I will learn to do. I know I cannot compete with the Countess in skills or wisdom or appeal, and I saw the way she looked at you. And I saw the way you looked at her. But remember, please, that she is old and has other interests, while I am seventeen and for me there is only you. Dearest Westley---I've never called you that before, have I?---Westley, Westley, Westley, Westley, Westley,---darling Westley, adored Westley, sweet perfect Westley, whisper that I have a chance to win your love." And with that, she dared the bravest thing she'd ever done: she looked right into his eyes.
He closed the door in her face.
Without a word.
Without a word.

Yes, that's right. Westley slams the fricking door right in buttercup's face when she professes her love to him for the first time. It's a shame they cut that part from the movie.
