Is there a feat that would allow you to automatically stabilize went dropped below 0? Even if it is 1/day or something, will still suit my purposes, but am hoping for few or no prereqs.

Yes, there is. (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/feats.htm#diehard)

Out of curiosity can you take Item Familiar (UA) (I know there are problems with the feat) and give it the Orisions ability? Then it could just heal you for 1 pt every round?

Alternately, get a +19 autohypnosis (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/skills/autohypnosis.htm) check. Since it's a flat DC 20 to resist dying and natural 1's don't automatically fail on skill checks, that will do. This is a little tricky to do without taking up your item slots and if autohypnosis isn't a class skill, but we can't all have gravy and rainbows.

Stupid? Maybe. Overpowered? Caltrops aren't difficult to avoid via other means (flying or teleporting, for example), memorization is cute but rarely a game-changer, resisting dying can be done other ways, fear immunity is not hard to get, poison save DC's generally don't keep up with leveling well but monster poisons might be an exception, and pretending to have diehard is uninspiring.

It's a skill which lets you do things you otherwise couldn't. To be able to do these things reliably costs a fair number of skill points or other resources. To my mind, it's in line with what a skill should do, whereas something like Gather Information or Iajutsu Focus is kind of silly to have as a skill rather. What, specifically, do you find overpowered about it?

Edit: looking at the Epic uses... by the time you can make DC 50 skill checks without custom items you should be immune to mind affecting effects anyway. Similarly, by the time you can hit DC 60 then the temp HP or DR are not a big deal.

Frenzied berserkers don't die when frenzying, even well after -10

Spending an action point automatically stabilizes you at your current hit point.

No action points in the campaign, but Fearless Destiny from Races of Destiny - exactly what I was looking for.

High-level Crusaders with the Immortal Fortitude stance can do it almost indefinitely.

And at level 20, Knights get the ability to survive a number of rounds equal to their charisma.

The Knight (PHB2) get's the capstone Loyal Beyond Death: he can fight on beyond -10 as long as he has uses of his Knight's Challenge to burn...

Tempting Fate luck feat (CS) - you can spend a luck re-reoll to auto stabilize, or spend a luck rereoll to be stable at -9hp on an attack that would normally do enough damage to kill you 1/day.

Scarab of Stabilization (MIC) - auto stabilizes you, and allows you to avoid death from damage once.

There's also the Periapt of Wound Closure (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicitems/wondrousitems.htm#periaptofWoundClosure).
