No, THIS (http://www.spiegel.de/img/0,1020,1529925,00.jpg) is a gaming table!

A 200 year old one, too. ^^

Now if they'll just let you mod it so you can use it for other games, it'll be perfect...

http://www.ultimategamingtable.org/I could handle this one.

The Sultan is in fact the highest level of all gaming table pwnage. I cry a little every time I look at it. :smallfrown:

However, the Emissary, Geekchiq's more basic gaming table, is also pretty nice. I could actually afford that one, if I saved for a year or two. A pity it's not available in a larger size, as my group is too big for it.

NO! THAT'S PATRICK!

...

what? either way, the Ultimate Gaming Table would be the one for me. the sultan seems to have far more doo-dads that i actually care for.

call me utilitarian or frugal, but the UGT fits me better then the sultan.

even if i was the heir to the gates' fortune/empire.

Pretty impressive, though I would have used standardized real dice for each player which a camera tracks and gets the numbers rolled, its just not the same with a dice rolling program :smallwink:

(standardized because not every d20 has the same numbers layout and the camera only knows the number facing the table but needs the one opposite)

Another thing that might be very interesting for future d&d sessions would be augmented reality http://vimeo.com/3515273 :smallwink:

(actually opposing sides of die traditionally all sum to the same number, so knowing the downside tells you the upside)

The opposite ends of a standardized d20 add up to 21.

The dice and monster animations would be agonizingly slow in a real game, but I imagine there would be options to speed up or bypass the rolls altogether (the game can just instantly randomize a number when the player hits the button after all). Hopefully the system would accommodate a lack of maps or a 'players explored areas' sort of map concealment system as well. One thing that bothered me was the circular wheel menu with writing at all kinds of odd angles running along it. That actually looks painful to deal with.

You can just turn your control piece to spin the menu, though.

The fact that you have to do that at all is the bad design part of it.

I know but there are none standardized dice out there (I have one in my "collection" thats why I wrote standardized ^^

To me it seems like it would mainly just slow down play with character set-up, people accidentally triggering the screen, etc. with little real benefit.

The Sultan, however, sounds awesome. The others are definitely what I'd go for if I didn't want to spend years saving, though.

How would you like the design to be improved?

It is. I tried the thing at PAX. It was basically a giant iPhone. I can understand why they gave you the option to rotate the text, but the display just didn't have enough pixels for it to look right. Fonts can't be rotated to arbitrary angles and be expected to look good when they're that small. I'd rather they assumed everyone would be sitting at one of the sides and aligned the text with that edge.

Video is still loading for me, so cannot comment yet, but it got me thinking about the other research I have done on this, as I would love to build my own multi-touch gaming table with under-projection for geeky gaming godliness(say that three times fast).

This blog has a pretty interesting build journal. part 2 has conmverting it to digital. http://tyrendes.wordpress.com/2009/04/20/how-we-built-our-custom-game-table/

there are also tutorials online on how to make a ulti-touch surface relatively easy.

That last one's definitely the kind of thing I'd love to get for my gaming group. I've considered a couple times doing something similar, but due to space would likely just end up projecting it up on the wall to avoid having to have a 5' tall table to accomodate the projector's throw distance.

I'd rather they assumed everyone would be sitting at one of the sides and aligned the text with that edge.

actually, I would think limiting the menu to being displayable towards each edge would be better (can turn the menu in 90 degree increments). It means the table doesn't restrict seating arrangements

Yeah I’ve seen that before, its pretty cool. The thing is that you can do the same thing on a tablet PC, granted it’ll be a little cramped (three at most at it most likely). While its smaller, its much easy to carry around and therefor better for portable on the go action. the idea is awesome. They need to make this stuff affordable.

Also that table is very beautiful. I’d hate to actually play on it.

If I win the lottery, this is my Second purchase. With ALL the bells and whistles.

A swanky Loft is the first. (Gotta put it somewhere, and a table THAT nice deserves its own room.)

The Sultan, however. DO WANT!!!

Not a big fan of the electronic table.
1)Looks like set up would take even more time
2)The dice animations are agonizingly slow.Just put out a picture of d20 and have a button that says 'roll', then do your randomization thing. I don't need an animation of all that. It's the same thing on DVDs where the menus all have transition effects.
3)Most DM's I've seen have been amazingly unprepared, regardless of the edition. That thing looks like it would create even more work for creating an adventure. And good luck being able to adlib when your party goes off the rails.
4)Perhaps if the creators had hooked a bunch of ipads together, so that each person has their own screen. Now they can sit lounging on a couch, rather than around a tiny table
5)An advantage to that thing, would probably be better for the larger games I play. Not rpgs, but tactical games, Kursk, D-day, Shellshock (which use little bits of cardboard, so one unit/man ends up with a dozen stacking bits of cardboard), or Axis&Allies and Risk, which use very large numbers of men and dice. The problem with those? Someone usually has long baggy sleeves they don't roll up, or the host has a cat/annoying sister.

6)This is a table I'd like to have. Don't have enough room for your party now that you've got more players? Pull it away from the wall, and let'er rip.

This combined with fog of war for each player in combat. Also nots to the GM or other players.

War games would be great on this. Battletech, Warhammer, 40K, what ever would rock. And no need to carry a ton of minies. Or risk braking lovingly painted minies.

I also would find that a pain to set up. Id rather use a big screen TV and maptools.
