View Full Version : Trapfinding? (3.PF)

We are once again in a party where no one is playing a rogue. We just hit level 5 with a druid, an alchemist, a sorcerer/fighter, a ranger, two barbarians, and a straight fighter. Now, thankfully PF is a lot easier on characters without trapfinding, but it would be kind of nice to grab it.

What classes are there that have trapfinding, and are there any other ways to acquire it?

Factotum(Dungeonscape), Rogue, Artificer(ECS), Barbarian ACF (uses survival, Dungeonscape), Ranger ACF (trades Track at 1st level, Dungeonscape).

So one or both of the barbarians can use retraining rules (PHB II) or just be allowed to switch it out. Also, da ranger could as well, retroactively adding Disable Device as a class skill.

Note, with the barbarian, only mechanical traps can be destroyed with their ability. They can still find magical traps IIRC, but they'll have to be dispelled or otherwise circumvented rather than disarmed.

There's a spell clerics have called find traps (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/findtraps.htm)... Also, IIRC, Kobold Domain clerics get trapfinding.

Edit: Spellthief and Scout (complete adventurer) and I believe Ninja (complete adventurer model) all have trapfinding as well.

So the ranger could go into Scout for a swift hunter build and get trapfinding to boot.

Trapfinding also works well as a homebrew feat if you toss in Search and Disable Device as new class skills.

It's a 1 level dip so it's not hard for the ranger to pick up. Disable device might be handy too, but you can always pay double for your ranks or use alternate ways around the traps.

Yeah, our original rogue player has now set our record for Most Character Deaths in a Campaign. It just might be time to get trapfinding on someone else for a change. :smallyuk:

Fun tip: the rogue searches for traps, but disabling them is at his option and sending the tank through the door instead of the rogue is an absolute requirement. Or ya give trapfinding to someone else. Don't need a full blown rogue unless you need lots of other skills too.

True. We just have to listen to our DM whining about how he won't adjust the encounters for our poor party planning. :smallsigh:

Early in the development of 4e, Trapfinding was a feat that let you use Perception to detect traps that rogues got for free. Since it was a virtual necessity for all adventuring parties, and basically a feat tax, Trapfinding was phased out and now anyone with Perception can detect traps. Of course, the rogue is still the best at detecting and disarming traps since it is one of the few classes that have Thievery and Perception as class skills.

Ask your DM to waive the Trapfinding requirement for detecting and disarming traps if nobody wants to play a rogue. This simple houserule removes the need for someone with Trapfinding to be in the party.

See previous post. Our DM is of the opinion that if we don't plan out a party to fulfill all the crucial functions then we have to figure out how to pick up the slack on our own. Although this being a 3.PF game it's not so bad as in 3.5.
