I've been working on a music "album" of sorts for a couple years and the music is finally done. The problem is, I'm not sure what to label myself as genre-wise. The music is entirely MIDI based, but I'm not really sure what to call it. What genre do you think it fits into?

You can listen online to Shriker here (http://www.kongregate.com/collabs/sounds/Makensha/shriker) and Land of My Heart here (http://www.kongregate.com/collabs/sounds/Makensha/land-of-my-heart).

Or you can download the whole set here (http://host-a.net/Makensha/OFTH.zip) as a zip file. Some of the names are not final.

I dunno. The first one sounds like boss fight music. :smalltongue:

Genre is the worst thing that ever happened to music. Don't worry about it.

Now that I am done giving you my philosophical viewpoint here is what those two songs probably fall under. Heavy Metal and Melodic Metal.

Castlevania music.
I get that a lot.

As nice as an idea that is, it really doesn't work well.

Me: I make music!
Other: Really? What type?
Me: Uhh... MIDI
Other: What's MIDI
Me: Sounds made by computers
Other: Ok, so is it like dancing music?
Me: Not really, more of...?

Categories exist so that when you say Black Metal, people (well, some people at least) automatically have a rough idea of what it sounds like.

Interesting. Thank you.

Usually I make them listen to it. I don't try to fit into a genre, genres fit around my music.

And that sounded incredibly egotistical, not what I meant at all...

I don't conform to the world, the world conforms to me!

I know what you mean as those two songs do not represent the whole "album" with perfect accuracy. But there are still many ways that putting something down into a genre is helpful. Makes it easier for people with interest in your style to discover you.

And besides, sites such as MySpace require you to define your music into a genre.

Sounds pretty cool, whatever it is. Metalish. Look into retracking the parts with an actual band... that'd sound awesome. ^.^
