what level would YOU allow a pally pc to have a nightmare as a mount?

Intelligence, Etherealness/Astral Projection (both 9th level spells) at will and fly 90 feet...

Well, a druid can have a dire lion at 10th level, which is the same CR. This creature is much more useful than that. I'd say 12th level, minimum.

this is going to be a lawful good version of the nightmare, white with blue flames. what to call it?

Hmm, Technically you can get one as a Cohort at 6th level with the Leadership feat.

Day Stallion?

Yeah, this would probably be the best if you want the opposing name for nightmare.

Peace,

Suncharger? Astral Stallion?

Just an aside: a blackguard from Forgotten Realms once had a nightmare of that color as a mount. Of course, you're free to mess around with it.

ok ok lol, so you guys like to name things! what about my other question, tribbles answered, but i was hoping for a few answers :P

think what we're going to do is give me a unicorn, with Pegasus flight speed and astral projection, but not etherealness.

6 HD plus 4 Cohort LA = cohort level 10. Leadership gets you it at 12th, then, just like your first suggestion.

Whoops, forgot about the HD. Interesting to know my 'balance sense' was more reliable

White horse, blue flames? Doesn't matter what you call it, your players will call it the name of a pokemon.

Why remove etherealness? The astral projection ability is actually more powerful than the etherealness.

A few negative levels can bring it down to Cohort ECL 5 (1 Hd + 4 LA) so by 7th. Meaing you get Leadership and don't use it till next level.

I'd avoid Day Stallion if your player is a Piers Anthony fan.

because astral projection is more flavorful for the game. etherealness is something that will make it harder to take me down, and thus ill trade it for the chance to have a flying unicorn without the wings
:D

sure, but it wouldnt be used as such in this game, plus it wouldnt be at will, probaly a 1/week thing

Except Astral Projection is essentially playing with a saved game. First, shift to another plane. Any plane works, but preferably one where you'll be relatively safe. Then have the mount project you and it onto the prime. While you are there, you interact with everything normally. If you are slain on the prime, you simply wake up back on the plane you are on, and the creature projects you astrally back into the prime.

There is almost no risk, because you simply project again when you fail.

Personally, I like the idea of a unicorn better. I tend to frown on creating "good" or "evil" versions of monsters. Yes, some monsters need fixing. But, if you want to have a nightmare as a mount, then play a different kind of paladin.

As for levels, I would second the 12th level (or there-abouts: 9, 10, 11) requirement. But, it would also depend on the rest of the party. A significantly powerful mount could upset the power balance of the party and break it. Then, there is how this mount fits in with the campaign setting (do paladins of this deity, in this campaign setting all ride such mounts? etc.) And, the reasons for the character having or wanting the mount (cool factor aside) must also be taking into account. So, there is plenty to consider.
