If you're referring to all the comments about "character x is not related to character y and the resemblance is just because stick figures look so similar," they mean that stick figures lack a lot of distinctions if you stick to on style like the giant does with OotS. There are a lot of stick figure styles, but sticking to one sort of...style(?)...of stick figures limits the number of options.

That said, Rich's style actually leaves room for a great deal of variety between characters while still allowing him to use 'cookie cutter' figures for mass generic individuals (like the hobgoblin army).

As far as similarly, or even identically, drawn characters being related goes, look back through the archives that feature azurite soldiers and compare them to Kazumi and Daigo during the escape and their wedding. You'll probably realize, like I did, that Kazumi looks exactly like every other female azurite soldier while Daigo looks exactly like every other male azurite soldier. I highly doubt that their families' are solely responsible for every member of the army.

Of course, thats is sort of the point there isn't it? They WERE just another of the faceless crowd NPC's untill we discovered they did actually have names and became important characters. They themselves recognise this as they are even saving Daigo's last name in case he needs to use it to stop from becoming a nameless npc that gets killed.

To me, their looking just like every other azurite soldier was intentional.

1. Kimono. Just the way it sounds.

And really, the point isn't that there are several ways of drawing stick figures - although I will say that "pregnant" and "baby" don't apply to most characters! - but that you're still limited by the constraints of the genre. They've all got round heads and minimally detailed bodies.

Lets face it, most characters are distinguished by the following:

- Hairstyle
- Haircolor
- Skintone
- Clothes
- Facial hair

if you take that away what is left? You can tell if they're male or female, but thats pretty much it.
Or give Tarquin a beard and a different haircut and take his armor away and he looks like the bearded gladiator.
All those minor details that seperate real humans from one another you can't really do.

So saying "Gosh they both have red hair, Girard must be Ian Starshine" is really just silly.

One thing that has always impressed me about Rich's art is his ability to express such a wide range of emotions in his (heavily abstracted) stick figures.

I mean, the figures are really simple at their core, but still complex enough to convey a surprising amount of body language: A figure's pose, the inclination of its head, the details of its expression (And if you go through the comic and look, there really are more details than you think), and so on. It's the combinations of the little things that makes his art so effective, I think.

I don't know, just putting that out there.

Oh I'm not saying that all of Rich's stick figures look the same. They don't.
Which I find highly impressive that even despite the very limited amount of actual details he manages to make each character look distinctive (unless they're supposed to be "face in the crowd" NPCs).

I've read serveral "real" comics where I have serious trouble recognizing the characters when noone calls them by their name.

Which is exactly what I was getting at. :)

Height and body type (male, female, etc.)

Height and body type (male, female, etc.)

True, forgot those, And i'm also talking about characters of the same species obviously, that a human and a lizard or a dragon look different is obvious.
But basicly its still that all have the same round head, (almost) all males the same square body and (almost) all females the same round body, and yet the Giant manages to make each character so unique that they're easily recognisable, unless they're intented to be faceless.

However due to the limitations of the art-style it's basicly impossible to have family resemblence and such. I mean Roy doesn't look that much like his parents, sister or granddad, except maybe for the skin-tone. But if it wasn't said "This is his dad" then there wouldn't be much beside that to connect them.

Someone ought to make a version of Sp-studio (http://www.sp-studio.de/) for OOTS.
