I've been thinking of replacing the 3.5 ed prohibited schools rules for specialist wizard with the 3.0 ed rules for future games I run. What I wonder is if the change in rules where due to balance issues or not. Obviously wizards don't need any help, but it would be nice to have magic schools other then necromancy and illusion dropped with some frequency.

Well, if your only gripe is that Necromancy and Illusion are the constant dropped schools at your table, have your players read a few wizard guides and watch them drop Evocation and Enchantment instead.

It's funny that this is common practice I only dropped necromancy last time I played a specialist cause my character was CG. Honestly my two favored schools to drop are illusion and enchantment because most if not all can be negated by mind blank or immunity to mind effecting. I know it's not the best route but having a few blasting spells at your disposal can come in handy (yes I know the orb line is conjuration and many spells provide the very nice SR:No effect). I made the above mentioned character long before I started reading these forums though I was thaught to optimize my pcs early on in my dnd career.

On the other hand you can't deny the usefulness of a well played illusionist either. In conclusion I second having your wizard player read a few guides to change their outlook. Also I don't remember off hand the 3.0 specialist rules though I'm pretty sure it had something to do with allowing schools.
