FOR ALDERAAN AND THE REPUBLIC

It is a dark time for the
Rebellion. Although the Death
Star has been destroyed,
Imperial troops have driven the
Rebel forces from their hidden
base and pursued them across
the galaxy.

Evading the dreaded Imperial
Starfleet, a group of freedom
fighters led by Luke Skywalker
has established a new secret
base on the remote ice world
of Hoth.

The crew of the light freighter
Boboqueequee Express
has been assigned to a
resupply mission for the hidden
Rebel command base...

The crew, consisting of a Duros pilot, a Force adept, two Rebel-aligned Mandalorian warriors, and a fledgling officer, have managed to unload their supplies, and have begun refueling for their next mission. News of the legendary Commander Skywalker's disappearance and subsequent retrieval and recovery were the highlights of the week, up until Skywalker's smuggler friend and self-proclaimed reluctant Rebel, Captain Solo and his Wookiee companion Chewbacca shot down an Imperial probe droid. The news is clear: the Imperials are coming. The evacuation has just begun, but an even worse event has altered the emergency plans: an entire flotilla of Imperial Star Destroyers has dropped out of lightspeed within sensor range. The Emperor's right hand, Darth Vader, has come to Hoth with his personal fleet.

All starship crews have been paged for an immediate meeting with the base commanders, General Rieekan and Princess Leia Organa.

Alexis walks through the carved ice tunnels of the base, dressed warmly in some winter-weather gear. "Kriffing Hoth," she says as she makes her way towards the meeting. "I know it's well hidden, but couldn't they have picked something warmer?"

She looks around the area nearby for any of her fellow crewmembers of the Express and if they're nearby.

Alexis looks at Berk as he lights up a death stick. "No thanks," she says, tempted to order him to put the foul-smelling narcotic out but deciding against it. "As for the other planets, I haven't seen those personally," she adds. "But I hate the cold."

"Sure kid why don't you fly your tail around the outer rim for a while, then you can decide the name of ship that won't get noticed."

Alexis shrugs at Berk's comment. "For some reason," she says, "being in space has never bothered me, temperature-wise."

She continues walking through the halls of the base. "Anyone have any idea of what this meeting is about, save for the obvious. I don't think this is going to be like the Yavin evacuations."

"Of course it's not going to be like the Yavin evacuation. With such agreeable terrain, the damn Empire's probably going to utilize a large-scale ground assault," Cabur says as he emerges from a side corridor, well armoured and armed to the teeth as always, "Besides I agree with Berk, this planet isn't so bad. It was a good choice, too much luxury would make our warriors soft. They need to be rugged and hardy if they wish to survive, nothing better for that than a harsh world like this."

"I agree. The cold helps keep the troops on their toes. Although it does increase the number of people I have to treat. As for the Empire, I just hope I get to take a few of them down in the evacuation." He appears out of a side hall wiping blood off his gloved hands with a rag. "Amputations, so messy."

Berk says this as they enter the briefing room, where General Rieekan and Princess Leia are just beginning to brief the starship crews (mostly other smugglers and small-group teams, the heavier transports already in action) on the plan. Rieekan looks up and replies. "Unfortunately, we don't have that long. We're expecting sightings of Imperial ground forces within moments, and we have neither the supplies nor manpower to defend against a full assault."

He moves to a board, which displays diagrams of his plan. "We've already begun loading the medium transports with as much as we can. In order to get the transports into space, we need to lower the shield. The base's ion cannon will fire some shots to clear the Star Destroyers from the transports' path. Each transport wave will be escorted by fighters and light freighters to keep the TIEs off their backs."

Leia steps up. "In the meantime, the crews will be needed to help with the evacuation procedures, both loading the ships and helping the field troops delay the Imperial walkers."

Evla feels the tension permeating through the room, flavored with a bitter dash of desperation. Leia in particular seems worried about something... though her presence in the Force is slightly stronger than the others, even Rieekan's, so it might just be that she's easier to read right now.

Most of the assembled group seem to mumble along in agreement with Berk and Alexis. Leia is about to speak, but Rieekan steps in for her. "We were hoping that some of the pilots would be willing to help Rogue Squadron skirmish with the Imperial forces while they waited their turn. We have just enough speeders adapted to the weather to include a few more pilots."

A couple hotshots begin to agree with Rieekan, though whether it's out of a sense of duty or a vague opportunity to impress the Princess of Alderaan is unclear.

"That's what I like to hear. Everyone looking to hop on a speeder should report to the south hangar. If you think you'd better be suited for manning the defenses, head to the east barracks. If you're still keen to keep loading the transports, just find a crew and start working. If there are no other questions, you are dismissed."

Rieekan nods. "Like I said, we're still waiting confirmation from the forward stations, but we know it will be a full ground assault, likely with the Empire's finest. The flagship in orbit is none other than the Executor, Darth Vader's personal command ship."

After the meeting is over and the crews dismissed, Cabur heads to the hanger. First to store his rifle and its ammunition aboard the Express and then to join the others at the speeders.

He spares but two words before stowing his scattergun, pistol, bandoleer, and vibroblades in the cargo compartment of the speeder and boarding it with Elva.

"Don't die."

Alexis opens the canopy of the landspeeder and peers inside, studying the controls. "Not too different from what other speeders I've flown," she mutters as she climbs in. Two young men in standard-issue orange flight suits slip into the gunner seats behind Berk and Alexis. Alexis notices that the pre-flight checklist specifies the comm frequency... and it's obvious from the given frequency that this wing isn't part of Rogue Squadron.

As you boot up the speeders and tune in to the right frequency, you hear a human male's voice crackle to life over the comm. "Good morning, kids, and welcome to our little ad-hoc squadron. I'm Commander Pryce, and Command has decided to call us the "Gundarks." We'll be covering the transports' launch pads. If any Imperials manage to wander over this way, you'll have to take them out before they alert the main force. If they concentrate their forces on the transports before they can get off the ground, it's all over."

Ke'gyce heads off to the barracks, where he meets a Rebel trooper with an impeccable mustache and cold-weather gear. He offers a handshake and a warm greeting. "So, you're that Mando battle-medic I saw in the med-bays earlier, right? I'm Captain Wes Antilles. Good to have you on board. We'll be manning part of the main defensive line... we need to hold off the Imps as long as we can. To do so, we'll need to give ground to the plastic boys in a way that'll make 'em chase us. Shoot a couple, back up a bit. Shoot some more until they take down the turrets, back up some more. Got it?"

(Note: Antilles is a fairly common Human surname. You can't shoot a pistol on Corellia without someone with an Antilles relative hearing the shot.)

The first few minutes of battle are relatively quiet for the Gundarks, though Pryce does patch in a comm from Commander Skywalker, regarding the fearsome assault walkers on the main front:
"That armor's too strong for blasters! Use your harpoons and tow cable. Go for the legs!"

Soon after, Pryce spots a few blips on the radar, over a hill and outside line-of-sight for the turrets. Referring to the ad-hoc formations of your little group, he comms over to you, "Wing two, check it out."

Heading out over the hill, you spot an AT-ST and a few speeder bikes, the Imperial gray-and-white color scheme acting as accidental camouflage. Luckily, there's no snowstorm right now, they aren't particularly trying to hide, and your target-acquisition systems are online, so their unusual advantage is rendered moot anyway.

-------------------------------

Antilles leads Ke'gyce and the squad over to their first defensive line, outfitted with an anti-personnel turret (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/DF.9_anti-infantry_battery) and a fairly decent-sized trench system. Within moments of hearing the more forward stations comming in their retreats, the slow mechanical chink-chink-thud of an Imperial walker is heard. The squad's spotter holds his left hand up and signs in his report: Advance crew. AT-ST and troops.

Alexis's shot etches two parallel marks on the speeder's lightly armored skin, weakening the hull integrity but missing the avionics. Berk's shot comes up just short, the twin bolts flanking the walker's "neck" and vaporizing a patch of snow on the other side.

(Cabur can still attempt to make an attack of his own with the gunner weapon, but to use the harpoon he'll need to wait for Evla to work with him on that)

Alexis and Berk's gunners make use of their pilots' passes to make shots at the bikes, trying to help focus fire on the one that Alexis damaged.
[roll0]

[roll2]
[roll3]

The bike, taking two more relatively light hits (for vehicle weapons), skids and crashes on the ground, disabled but not destroyed. The trooper formerly piloting the bike, though a touch shaken, manages to tumble off safely.

(You can give them orders to focus fire on different targets, or to use their harpoon guns instead. If you don't give them orders or specify you're going in for a cable run, they'll continue to use their repeating blasters.)

-------------------------------

Thinking for a moment, Antilles nods, then thumbs his comm. "Gunny, Give us some supporting fire against that walker while we start on the troops." Taking his thumb off the comm, he pops his head over the trench for a moment, then drops back down and motions towards some of the troopers and Ke'gyce. "You take the squad to the right. The rest of us take the squad on the left. Ready? Go!"

Cabur's strike hits the walker by a narrow margin, but the dazzling burst of fire scorches nearly every panel on the walker's backside at least once. A solid barrage of hits, but it'll take a while for hits like those to strike anything important enough to disable the mech. (Total damage: 31)

The walker turns its head at its peskily strafing opponents, and the pilot and co-pilot each fire their guns at a speeder: one barrage at Berk, another at Evla.

[roll2]
[roll3]
Remember, you've got DR 10, and Berk has Vehicular Combat. The speeder's threshold is only 26, though, so you may want to reroute power next turn. I'll let the pilot reassign the Engineer position to the gunner (pilot generally takes all otherwise unoccupied positions on a vehicle) as a free action.

The two remaining speeder bikes turn and angle their bikes and guns up to attack Alexis's speeder, in revenge for their downed compatriot. The trooper on foot signals to the other bikers, one of which ends his sweep heading towards the lone soldier to let him hop on.

(Where'd that bonus to attack come from? It should still be +6. The Pilot check, however, should be higher: you add the vehicle's Dex less its size modifier (total +4 for these speeders) to the Pilot check. Also, I just realized your stats are way too high for some reason. One 20 I can believe, but two and no stat below 10 is just unbelievable. You've got the rough equivalent of 50-point buy. Was it always like that, and I missed it for this long? :smallconfused:)

At any rate...

Also: this is why I dislike Battle Meditation: unless you take multiple talents for it, it's worse off than Born Leader. Provides the same type of attack bonus, but requires allies to remain within 6 and takes both a full round and a Force Point to activate.)

Alexis's shot unfortunately goes rather wide, melting some of the snow beneath the bike.

---------------

Ke'gyce's attack would have missed the trooper squad, if it wasn't for the supporting fire that his trooper allies were giving him. Combining their fire, the stormtrooper squad fires back. Alexis frowns as she sees the two new combatants on the field, the scout walkers marching in to aid their now destroyed comrades. "I got one of 'em," she says as she turns her snowspeeder towards the nearest AT-ST, "but I'm going to need some help."

She nears the walker and then presses down on the trigger of the craft.

"Two on one? That hardly seems fair. I'll take the other one then." Berk comments as he peels off on the other AT-ST.

Trying desperately to utilize the malfunctioning targeting optics, Cabur pulls the trigger of the blaster cannon and and hopes vainly for his attack to hit. It is all for naught as the bolts fly wildly off the mark impacting on the snow around the AT-ST as it continues its advance.

The fight against the two walkers erupts as the six speeders trade laser fire with the Imperial armor. However, most of the fire goes horribly astray, with only a few shots actually hitting... fortunately, it's all Rebel fire striking one of the walkers (AT-ST 1: 43 damage).

Alexis feels fortunate that the AT-ST neglected to fire at her in its latest attack, knowing that it likely targeted more dangerous foes. The young rebel turns her snowspeeder around again, and begins a very short strafing run against the walker before piloting the craft around to begin another run.

"Gr... Blasted Imperials. I'll show you how Mandalorians wage war."

Cabur once again takes aim and fires a burst at the AT-ST that Elva fired at.
