Considering that they are both summoning specialist druids, I'd need Combat Reflexes to really make use of that much reach in this fight. What we need is some good AoE effects, I'm thinking.

@Kyeudo:Even without Combat reflexes, greater reach gives you, Increased damage (from die type and str boost), and flexibility in positioning (you can attack from 20 feet away, so it's harder for them to block you with summons).

If you don't want enlarge, I won't do it, but anisimovna is limited in AoE effects. If it's not transmutation, it needs to be off a scroll, where spellgifted doesn't affect me. I've got an idea, though.

Would you prefer me locking the low strength one in place with Sticky Floor, or Obscuring Mist for hiding/concealment?

If you want to Enlarge me, I won't object.

I would prefer Sticky Floor over Obscuring Mist. I never seem to get much out of concealment.

Should I be aggressive and rush to meet them or stay back? I'm thinking rush, so they can't get summons up so easily. I might get lucky with some Mark of Madness shots.


I will buy a masterwork breastplate.

@Kyeudo:I'll memorize one, and hold it in reserve. Make the growth a surprise. That'll let me get my AC buffs up in round 1, which will let me join you faster.

I think I'll go with grease instead. Shorter duration, but if I time it right, I can hit the goblin with it, and, even if he passes reflex, he'll still be flat-footed for one of your attacks. Since his only defense is AC, that'll do as much as possible. I can possibly hit the other with a ray of clumsiness, or something, to soften him up for you. Then there's still my offense, and the backup scroll that I'll save for in case the precocious doesn't cast.

Purchase: Scroll of Grease -25gp.

If I understand correctly, I need to succeed on a Reflex save against Aguacatl's entangle spell. Doesn't the selected corner also put Aguacatl, both riding dogs, and Tunatl inside the affected area, requiring them to save as well?

Question: If I can show grounds for a rewind to before I was DQed, would that put me back in the game? Because if so:

Scorer cast Heat Metal on my armor, but I was not allowed a Will save to resist the spell. My armor is an attended object and so gets a saving throw.

Lyir:As far as I know, DQs are based solely on lack of a response when one is expected. You did indeed receive a Will save, but as there were not yet any effects from the spell, that wouldn't be grounds for a rewind anyway.

Your Hide check is opposed by the Spot check of anyone who might see you. You can move up to one-half your normal speed and hide at no penalty. When moving at a speed greater than one-half but less than your normal speed, you take a -5 penalty. It’s practically impossible (-20 penalty) to hide while attacking, running or charging...

...If people are observing you, even casually, you can’t hide. You can run around a corner or behind cover so that you’re out of sight and then hide, but the others then know at least where you went.

Usually none. Normally, you make a Hide check as part of movement, so it doesn’t take a separate action. However, hiding immediately after a ranged attack (see Sniping, above) is a move action.

The bolded text is what I am doing. Running around a corner, and then hiding. It is also a seperate instance of movement, which is spell-like in nature (Comp Champ, p. 52). Since hide checks are attempted as a part of movement, it would seem that different instances of movement require new rolls.

The specific thing I am attempting is explicitly laid out in the hide skill description. Where is the justification for disallowing it?

This shows that it is part of the same action taken to move. I don't see a once per round restriction on the check. Any movement seems to qualify.

Since the hide check is a part of the action taken to move, it stands to reason that a different action taken to move would permit a different check.

In addition:
Action

Every time you have a chance to spot something in a reactive manner you can make a Spot check without using an action.

When I break LOS, and re-establish it, it is trying to spot something in a reactive matter. It's not the "something" that is the key, it's the "time". When I moved into E8, he had an opportunity to see me. That's one time.

When I moved into E20, he was no longer able to see me. Moving into E19 gives him the possibility to see me. That's a new chance to spot me, which should require a new spot check.

A spot chance is rolled for each opportunity to find something, not each something to be found. Thus, breaking LOS and re-establishing should represent a new chance to spot, and require a new roll.

Anisimovna:Regardless, the Arena precedent is one check per round, a measure I suspect was likely implemented to prevent the very abuse you describe, although it's been around longer than I can remember, so I can't say for certain. One doesn't get four free attempts to spot someone by ducking around a corner and back repeatedly (this ruling I do remember reading, but it was in a very old match - on Dawn Arena, if you want to look - and a cursory search isn't finding it for me), and the same applies to hiding.

@Sallera:It's one thing when the spotter tries to abuse it to get multiple spot checks. It's another when the spotter is trying to spot someone while they move from one cover to another, with changing ranges and spot modifiers.

In other words, gaming the system to look for the same thing a dozen times is different than darting between multiple forms of cover across varying distances in an effort to lose a pursuer. In the first, it's essentially the same spot check, vs the same cover, against a target in the same square. In the second, the cover changes, the location and circumstances of the thing being spotted change, even the modifiers which apply change.

In other words, everything about the spot is different. Different cover, different location, different distance. The example you described could well be an interpretation of the "each time you have a chance to spot" as "it's the same spot. You're looking from the same location andspotting the same thing through the same cover". The latter is not. It's a legitimate attempt to use multiple sources of cover across the arena to lose a target.

That's not an abuse.

The reactive spot is the only one that would involve one check for each chance to see, and that would typically be rolled by the ref. Thus, you wouldn't roll 7 rolls 'just in case'. The ref would roll one spot check for each instance where a character left LOS and re-entered elsewhere (which would be less common on clouds than it would be somewhere like here).

This also has the advantage of giving people more chances to spot a hiding character, which actually hinders hiding characters.

He could theoretically continue fighting. While I can't make an official call, I can say that the intent behind that clause was just meant to allow skipping of the formallity of killing a finished opponent so that the match could be called faster.

@Refs:I'm thinking about the chances of getting ahold of their scrolls and throwing them out of bounds of the arena.

Last I was told on an LOS, each of my opponents was using a heavy shield and holding a scroll. I've asked in the waiting room if Aguacatl drops any items or falls prone when I knocked him into the negatives.

Also, I'd like to know if Tierhuter's items in hand have changed any (scroll and shield) with LOS, if possible. If I no longer have LOS to him, I had it when I dropped Aguacatl. In that case, I'd like to know what was in the hands of each opponent, as of that time. Also, any visible effects, such as flaming hands or the like.

I know precedent is in favor of characters in 2v2 matches only being eliminated by actual death, or by both combatants being unconscious.

Lets give an official statement on this:


Being rendered unable to continue fighting, usualy by being killed or rendered unconcious by being reduced to negative hit points. This also can include such conditions as being rendered dominated (but not Charmed), permanently incapable of acting, or other effects.

The two key words here are 'usually' and 'permanently'.

By precedent being 'temporarily' rendered unable to fight does not count as a condition of loss. 'Unconscious' is potentially temporary in 2v2 if a team mate still stands, and (rarely) may be called 'temporary' in 1v1 if fast healing, regeneration or like is active (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=7969050).

But yes, in practice 99% of the time 2v2 elimination is only on actual death or DQ, with loss also typical if both are unconscious.

@Refs:I was under the impression that precedent was that the arena believes in Karma, and players generally make their own companion's attack rolls, unless they are not entitled to know that their companion made the attack. As Aguacatl has line of sight to his dog in I22, he is entitled to know that his dog is attacking.

Based on that, shouldn't he make the attack roll?

Well, speaking as a High Ref and not a Master Ref:

The way I understand it the Karm Principle applies to the PCs themselves.

In the case of animal companions / summons the refs may make necessary rolls for the creature when it is acting/attacking out of sight of the owner, although out-of-sight defensiveness rolls are occasionally asked for.

Any other ref thoughts or observations on historic Animal Companion behavior?

@Refs:In this instance, the attack is in line of sight of the owner, however. The player can see the animal making the attack. Knowledge of who it's attacking isn't necessary for the player to be able to make a roll.

Let's say that roll missed. If I managed to kill Aguacatl (AGAIN), and he was eliminated (AGAIN), and gained access to looking at all the match spoilers (AGAIN), he'd want a rewind.

The last rewind was a LOS issue that brought a dead player back to life because of a LOS error. If I'm eliminated, fine. But my opponent has all the information he needs to make the attack roll, and will not gain any information undue him by making it. I thought that defaulted to the opponent making the attack roll.

I understand why Refs make spot and listen checks. Even asking a player to make one would give the player the knowledge that something is there to spot. In cases where players would receive information they're not entitled to, refs can and should make the roll. However, I've not seen a single precedent where a player doesn't make the roll when he wouldn't gain any information.

In this instance, that's the case. The player knows his animal is making an attack. He even knows the square the animal is attacking. Since that is known, then he's gaining no information from being told to roll it that he doesn't already have. Therefore, it should default (IMO) to player roll.

@Scorer:It's a ref job to do things that the players can't, within the boundaries of the honor system. It's a player's job to do everything else. It's been stated that the Arena believes in Karma, and that generally, players are supposed to make their own rolls. Refs may make rolls in situations where being told to make a roll would give a player information that he shouldn't have (if the animal left LOS, for example, or spot/listen checks). This was not one of those situations.

I wouldn't want a ref stepping in and making one of my attack rolls, just as I wouldn't want my opponent making my opposed grapple check for me. If I had lost a match after a Ref made an attack roll which missed, and I had been in LOS of my mount/companion when it happened, I would ask for a rewind. And we've had quite enough rewinds. I would REALLY like to see this match play out with no more. I'm a big believer in luck. If it's unavoidable, that's one thing. In this case, it's not.

I didn't argue when you wanted the rewind that brought you back to life, despite the fact that the actual impact in the match was minimal (3 missed shots versus no shots attempted). I was frustrated at losing a kill I had worked for in that manner, but I chalked it up to "it happens" and tried to be a good sport about it.

I know that I should have hit with 1 attack there, and that it should have either disabled or knocked Aguacatl out (depending on how many HP Tierhuter restored the first time he healed you). I just need to know which, and what actions were taken. (For future reference, when you know I can see you, it speeds things up when you unspoiler the parts of your turn that I can see... Then I don't need to wait for a ref to sort everything out.)

So, you had to stand up... That means you were knocked unconscious... And you took a full round's worth of actions, which means you're not disabled now... Which means Tierhuter healed you again, for at least 2 hp. Which means that he's stacked his level 1 slots with cure spells (unless he had better luck finding a level 0 spell that heals 2+ hp than I did).

:smallsigh: I was afraid of that. I mean, I half expected it, but still, it makes it hard to shoot you to death.

I posted a request for LOS. I don't generally check spoilers without a ref or player telling me to, on account of possible information I shouldn't have.

For example, when you first told me I could open your spoiler, information about Tunatl's movement was in there, despite the fact that the animal moved somewhere I don't have LOS to. I tried to ignore it, but I don't want that happening without being told.

I'm waiting for a ref to give me LOS for tierhuter's action.

Tell you what. Provided the following are true: (anyone can read)1) My attack on Aguacatl in round 12 hit once for 4 damage.
2) That 4 damage rendered Aguacatl unconscious (which I would assume reduces Aguacatl's HP to at least -1).
3) Tierhuter cast a spell which rendered Aguacatl conscious and able to take both a move and standard action (requiring healing of at least 2 HP).

Then the only way I can see that all happening, is that Tierhuter has expended both his level 1 spells curing you, and cannot have any more left. If that's true, then:

Anisimovna, Round 13:

Standard: Ready an action:Attack Aguacatl with a volley if he attempts any action or ends turn.

Done.

Die Tierhüter then moves to E18, drops the scroll, casts a spell, and then picks the scroll back up.
Aguacatl then stands back up, and readies an action.
Tunatl apparently moves west back out of LoS.

Curiosity: why did Tunatl only move to G22 and not say, E19? Last I heard (Round 11) Tunatl's orders were to seek clockwise around the southwester point.

I believe I have cover from the animal at L13, which prevents AoO's.

In addition, it does NOT trigger your readied action, because you have no readied action to trigger. That was precisely what I was asking in the waiting room. Readied actions last until the beginning of your next turn. When your turn started, you may have Delayed it, but it still began.

When making a melee attack against an adjacent target, your target has cover if any line from your square to the target’s square goes through a wall (including a low wall). When making a melee attack against a target that isn’t adjacent to you (such as with a reach weapon), use the rules for determining cover from ranged attacks.
