Hello, your friendly neighborhood SP_Ninja, with another Pokemon LP. No, this isn't a Nuzlocke run, or anything strange like that.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/PokemonRedUpdate0_02.png
NOTHING STRANGE AT ALL

*ahem* More seriously, this is a Pokemon Red LP heavily inspired by a Pokemon Blue LP on the Something Awful forums. Like that LP the goal isn't so much "Play through a Pokemon game with an interesting story and engaging narrative while lampshading the weirder parts of Pokemon games" as "Prod the poor game with cheats and glitches as it screams for mercy that will never come." The story will play a backstage role as we traverse the glitchy wasteland that is First gen Pokemon. Also, this is my first LP so I should mention I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing. So yeah, this should be interesting.

I guess you viewers can start voting on our starter Pokemon, rival name, and stuffs.

I vote for bulbasaur as you're starter. No idea on the rivals name though.

Chapter 1: A Taste of What is Yet To Come

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/PokemonRedUpdate1_01.png
Here's the first place we're flipping story the bird. Screw you Professor Oak.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/PokemonRedUpdate1_02.png
It's a catchy name. Has that ring to it.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/PokemonRedUpdate1_03.png
Heh heh heh, nostalgia.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/PokemonRedUpdate1_04.png
The starting room, nothing to write home about. Well, let's get this party started.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/PokemonRedUpdate1_05.png
And now we start doing horrible, horrible things. This is the walk-through-walls gameshark code in action. There's a glitch that replicates it's effect, but that is much later and who cares about using gameshark for the sake of torturing a game?

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/PokemonRedUpdate1_06.png
By the miracles of gameshark we are able to do something we were told never to do. Go into tall grass without a Pokemon.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/PokemonRedUpdate1_07.png
The inevitable happens and we get into a fight. If you've played Pokemon you know things are screwy already. The Rattata's name is blanked out and the game says I have six fainted Pokemon. We have to send out a Pokemon, though...

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/PokemonRedUpdate1_08.png
...and so we send this monstrosity out. As you can see, when we send out our Eldritch Abomination the battle screen goes all sorts of crazy.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/PokemonRedUpdate1_09.png
When I click fight to try to attack the game resets itself. Intriguing, but it's not about to lead to more fun.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/PokemonRedUpdate1_10.png
After I go through Oaks spiel again we're back to our regularly scheduled madness. I know what you're thinking, what happens if you heal at a Pokemon Center with no Pokemon? There's only one answer to that question. Let's find out!

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/PokemonRedUpdate1_11.png
Good ol' Cinnabar Island. The location of the most famous Pokemon glitch (if not the most famous glitch period). You can see our destination, so let's go heal our nonexistent team.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/PokemonRedUpdate1_12.png
At the moment everything seems fine, besides the obvious fact that I'm healing Pokemon I don't have.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/PokemonRedUpdate1_13.png
Whoa, whoa, whoa, wait. What is THAT.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/PokemonRedUpdate1_14.png
OH GOD IT DOESN'T END!

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/PokemonRedUpdate1_15.png
An hour and a half later, whatever unholy abomination Nurse "Joy" unleashed is finished corrupting the world, meanwhile its servant is taunting us as we stand alone in the void.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/PokemonRedUpdate1_16.png
Aaaaaand, we're done for. For all intents and purposes this is the "Game Over" screen of this LP. Hopefully we'll be seeing less of it and more of interesting glitches.

Looks great so far, though you do plan on doing Glitch City and the Mew glitch at some point, right?

im sorry, but you really cant call those glitches since you forced the game to do something that within all normal limits could never happen, its not like theres an error in the coding or anything, you just make the impossible possible and the game has no knowledge of what should happen, so of course it doesnt work, although its still highly interesting

Most if not all glitches in First Gen Pokemon are accessible without cheating (as far as I know, anyway). As stated, a different glitch allows use of walk-through-walls, and some other things can set the number of Pokemon in your party to zero. Bigger glitches can even allow you to turn the item bag into an in-game hex editor of sorts (I am clueless about the inner workings of this, so I probably won't be able to show it though). I just take the lazy route.:smallwink:

@Rob_Roy Mew glitch and glitch city are in unless something goes horribly wrong (or considering the nature of this LP, right) and I am unable to get them to work.

Bulbasaur works for me... Call it Poppy. Or Opium. It seems fitting for this.

Is it wrong that I really want to see this specific playthrough (or one like it) narrated by the main character, as his world becomes increasingly unglued and falls to pieces around him for arbtrary reasons, like talking to people in a certain order... and even as it reaches the brink of some terrible destruction, it suddenly snaps back...and he has to watch it happen all over again, as more and more actions reveal a startling madness that may be just in his head?

I mean, I know that's not the point of this... But the idea appeals to me deeply.

At a certain point, if I can get the right glitch to work I'll be keeping a separate save-state to explore later. That spin-off may be narrated in first person if I can write it well enough.

And, of course, other people can contribute that sort of stuff if they want to. Getting fan-works for my first LP would be neat.

Re: Tentacool, Once we get to that part of the game our party will probably be filled with glitches (unless I cheat to get ??????). Cthulhu is a good nickname for said glitches, though, so I'll keep it in mind.

Re: All starters, I could cheat it in, but there is pretty much only one thing stopping me from stuffing our actual starter into a box early in the LP. All three just won't find space once we start catching glitches.

Update should be up today, sometime.

Glitch Notes I'm not going to show every glitch, especially minor ones or minor variations on previously shown glitches. These are explanations of what you're missing.

Chapter 2: It's Dangerous to Go Alone, Take This With You
http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/PokemonRedUpdate2_01.png
Making the game squirm feebly beneath the boot of our omnipotent cheats is fun and all, but we'll get nowhere fast by crashing the game. Let's go north like we're supposed to and get our starter.

Glitch Note: Where are you going Professor? If you stand on one of those barriers beside the grass the Prof. will still stop you (hence why we went to Cinnabar last time), but instead of taking you to his lab he walks horizontally in an endless loop, leaving you stuck in "cut-scene mode" unable to move.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/PokemonRedUpdate2_02.png
Our Bulbasaur, I forgot to nickname it, so I'll be taking suggestions for that until we get to the Name Rater.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/PokemonRedUpdate2_03.png
Heh heh, classic.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/PokemonRedUpdate2_04.png
Now we have our first battle against IDIOT, this fight is a joke, and takes extreme bad luck to lose.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/PokemonRedUpdate2_05.png
My point exactly.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/PokemonRedUpdate2_06.png
We hightail it to Viridian, the sooner we can get out of this mundane Pokemon stuff, the better. Pictured for posterity is a Pokemon Center with a nice nurse who doesn't seek to cause the apocalypse.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/PokemonRedUpdate2_07.png
To buy from the Mart (and thus get Pokeballs), you have to deliver Oak's Parcel and get the Pokedex. I wasn't going to have you watch any of this convoluted process, but this happened on the way back.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/PokemonRedUpdate2_08.png
Now we're back with the PokeMart. Nothing too special here...

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/PokemonRedUpdate2_09.png
...except the free Master Balls. Did I mention how easy Gameshark makes this process? The code is 01017ccf, if you were wondering.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/PokemonRedUpdate2_10.png
The Viridian Gym, you may know already that this gym is locked up tight, but what you probably don't know is that this door (and others like it) can be accessed with walk through walls shenanigans. Enter the door from any location except where you're supposed to and you're golden.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/PokemonRedUpdate2_11.png
It isn't exactly recommended though...

In other news I ground Bulbasaur up a bit on wild Pokemon.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/PokemonRedUpdate2_12.png
Second fight with IDIOT. Sand Attack, how I loathe you.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/PokemonRedUpdate2_13.png
This random old guy? He's important. You probably already know why, but I'm mentioning it anyway. On to Viridian Forest!

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/PokemonRedUpdate2_14.png
Kakuna actually looks pretty cool here. I'm not catching one, though.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/PokemonRedUpdate2_15.png
After much violence we find ourselves near Pewter and a tempting grass patch.

I'm not sure about catching it since Bulbapedia says viewing SUPERGLITCH can crash the game. Mainly, I just want to show SUPERGLITCH in action and stuff something interesting into this rather mundane update.

Also, it has a horrible special stat so anything that uses that type of move could murder it.

Now things get started for real, we're getting into some real first-gen glitchiness this update. Keep your arms and legs inside the LP at all times. Do NOT feed the glitch Pokemon.

Chapter 3: Epic Battles, Scary Glitches, Amazing Discoveries
http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/Pokemon%20Red%20Update%203/PokemonRedUpdate3_01.png
Welcome back, so, if you were wondering, SUPERGLITCH is a move. A lot of moves actually. It is the nickname of a bunch of volatile moves that scramble the games RAM at the slightest provocation. So far, .4 has neglected using its SUPERGLITCH move. I should also note that the encounter code I use can scramble sprites, this isn't what .4 actually looks like.

In short, SUPERGLITCH, and by extension .4, can screw up your game. Don't try to encounter one on an actual cartridge.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/Pokemon%20Red%20Update%203/PokemonRedUpdate3_02.png
And here we have SUPERGLITCH. This is rather underwhelming given the things SUPERGLITCH tends to do if you use it. The game froze here.

Glitch Note: A TM TRAINER is you! When you use SUPERGLITCH in battle it tends to trigger the TM TRAINER effect. You and/or your opponent's name changes to TM TRAINER followed by a long string of glitchy, glitchy text. The opponent's Pokemon gains a ludicrous amount of HP and is frozen and burned at the same time. The burn will generally destroy the huge life bar the Pokemon gained and faint it. The trainer you are fighting will then send out the Pokemon you just defeated again. The game almost always crashes after a battle in which SUPERGLITCH is used.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/Pokemon%20Red%20Update%203/PokemonRedUpdate3_03.png
I also defeated this guy. He seems sort of shady. Keep an eye out, I bet he's the Big Bad.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/Pokemon%20Red%20Update%203/PokemonRedUpdate3_04.png
Welcome to Cerulean City. You didn't miss much. I used walk through walls to skip Mt. Moon, Bulbasaur is no longer a Bulbasaur, and on the way here our new Ivysaur ran out of PP for attack moves and had to slowly leech seed several enemies to death. I'm going to Cerulean Cave as there is a Pokemon I need to pick up there.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/Pokemon%20Red%20Update%203/PokemonRedUpdate3_05.png
Here it is, if you were wondering about the two Pokemon the game says I have I caught another Pokemon since our Ivysaur couldn't escape from 'mon thirty or so levels above it. The extra is getting stuffed into a box.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/Pokemon%20Red%20Update%203/PokemonRedUpdate3_06.png
We are gaining references to other Pokemon LPs, collect them all, which won't be much because most LPs don't have glitchy abominations in their character's teams.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/Pokemon%20Red%20Update%203/PokemonRedUpdate3_07.png
Have you ever wondered what was in the grass just outside Pallet? This. I forgot I had walk through walls on so when I tried to leave Cerulean Cave I went out of bounds instead and got the second Game Over of the LP. On the bright side I caught a Magneton as the extra the second time I caught Chernobyl so I don't have to worry about that should I ever decide to actually catch a .4.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/Pokemon%20Red%20Update%203/PokemonRedUpdate3_08.png
Go up to the bridge north of Cerulean to start our first major glitch barring no Pokemon shenanigans. You'll meet this guy again.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/Pokemon%20Red%20Update%203/PokemonRedUpdate3_09.png
Gee, this isn't a curb stomp battle at all. Watching Chernobyl roast IDIOT's entire team was hilarious.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/Pokemon%20Red%20Update%203/PokemonRedUpdate3_10.png
After murdering five other trainers to cross the bridge you meet this guy. He seems nice, if a little passionate about getting you to join his club. We must decline this man's offer violently though since we have glitches to do.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/Pokemon%20Red%20Update%203/PokemonRedUpdate3_11.png
Go into this grass patch to find the 'mon we need for this glitch. If you fought the trainer over there then reset now because you screwed up. He's important.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/Pokemon%20Red%20Update%203/PokemonRedUpdate3_12.png
Abra is the Pokemon we are looking for. You will rip your hair out trying to catch one if you don't have Master Balls. I recommend picking up a Jigglypuff to put it to sleep before it runs if you're going shark-less.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/Pokemon%20Red%20Update%203/PokemonRedUpdate3_13.png
If you haven't healed at Cerulean's Pokemon Center do so now. Make sure you have Abra in your party then stand in this exact spot. Save your game here as there is quite a bit that can go wrong with this glitch. When you are ready step down and press start to open the menu as you are doing so.

Glitch Note: Oh god, what have I done. If you perform a variation on this glitch and do so incorrectly it is possible to corrupt an entire route of the game, rendering it permanently inaccessible due to being glitched out. Among other things, the menu can crash the game if you open it on the corrupted route, you move slowly, NPC sprites can teleport around, and you may be forced to battle trainers endlessly.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/Pokemon%20Red%20Update%203/PokemonRedUpdate3_14.png
If performed correctly your screen will look like this select Pokemon in the menu and use Abra to teleport to Cerulean. The trainer will spot you (am I the only one that hears the Metal Gear Solid spotted sound when this happens?), but Abra will still teleport you away. There is a chance your sprite will freak out but it is only a graphical glitch. Once you are back do not talk to anybody. Do not look at signs, and if you battle a trainer they must spot and walk at least one step towards you. You can not open your menu right now but that shouldn't be a problem. Head to Cerulean gym.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/Pokemon%20Red%20Update%203/PokemonRedUpdate3_15.png
Once in the gym battle this guy. Again, the trainer needs to move to you so if you are somehow surfing at this point in the game do not move up to him. Seriously, failing to be careful while the game is in its current wonky state can cause it to crash or the glitch detailed in the note above to activate (usually crashes).

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/Pokemon%20Red%20Update%203/PokemonRedUpdate3_16.png
The guy has a horsea and a shellder. Dispose of the horsea but this guy is important. Use growl on it six times (yes, this is why we caught CHERNOBYL). Once you do so you're free to defeat it. Head back to Nugget Bridge.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx77/SP_Ninja/Pokemon%20Red%20Update%203/PokemonRedUpdate3_17.png
As you enter the route the start menu opens by itself. Exit it and you immediately enter a battle. So, what unholy uber glitch can cause the start menu to open without our consent, and then attack us with it?

Also, level 1? I thought glitch-Mew was level 7?

The level of the encountered Pokemon depends on the what "stage" the Attack stat of the last Pokemon you encountered was. 7 is the base level (no boosts/drops), with 1 being the lowest and 13 being the highest. Since he used Growl 6 times, Mew was set to level 1 to match the -6 Attack drops.

Most glitch pokemon actually correspond to non-relevant pieces of game data. The game looks at the data, reads it as a pokemon, and barfs a monstrosity into your game. For all I know, .4 could actually be Pikachu's sprite read as a pokemon. Some glitches are so utterly ridiculously awesome (horrifying) I doubt they could be created on purpose very easily.

Basically, there are 256 slots for pokemon and only 151 legitimate 'mon. So if you use codes or glitches to encounter one of the slots without a legitimate 'mon you get glitchy monstrosities. The same goes for glitch moves like SUPERGLITCH.

Yeah, but then the games would have been finished really late and probably wouldn't have been as popular and we wouldn't be playing Pokeymans now.

I've heard that Green Version (which came out in Japan) was messed up somehow, so they released Blue outside Japan instead. Someone should translate that and do a glitch LP, there are probably even more there...

The only glitch I know is present in green but not in red/blue is the Dokokashira door (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Doko_kashira_door_glitch) glitch. Not too much of a loss compared to things that could have gotten lost like Missingno., glitch city, and ZZAZZ.

This is pretty radical. I quite enjoy it.

Keep it up~

Haven't been working on it too much to be honest, half due to laziness and half due to not knowing what to do next. Hopefully, I can get this done quickly when school is out for winter break since I already have an idea for a different, more cuddle-centric LP. Would anyone mind if I just skipped everything in between to get to the point where glitch city is feasible?

Skipping the lesser parts isn't much of a problem here, i'd say. Just get to the goods. (Since this is as far from a proper playthrough as it can get) :smallwink:

Currently, it looks like the LP is going to last four more updates. Some stuff in Cerulean, Glitch City, Missingno., and the finale (ZZAZZ). So, any suggestions for some other stuffs to do?
