How would you go about doing so in order to balance between having creatures available without breaking the bank but also making it so that purchasing them isn't the equivalent of pocket change after 3rd level?

Has anyone seen homebrew dealing with this that they approved of? Or even just a pricing scheme for mounts/pets independent of this particular template?

Because its biggest advantage, giving some rubric by which to give prices to creatures that would probably be tamed and sold but which didn't have any kind of price printed in their entries is also its biggest point of contention with many finding the prices too cheap and thus banning it.

Really, the best solution would be for the DM to use the Warbeast template to create whatever "war-trained" creatures make sense in their setting, and then calibrating the prices of those with the prices of, for example dinosaurs in Eberron. As long as it's under DM control players can't abuse it unexpectedly.
