Good day to you all..

This thread is mostly for new citicens who are looking to start in the town, but unfamiliar with the rules. If you want a mentor, or wish to be one, Please post your requests here. It is my personal recomendation that when choosing a mentor, that they have been registered for about 3 months or so, but that is only a reccomendation. Choose your mentor as you see fit.

It is recomneded that you include some information about yourself as well as your character when asking for a mentor. age, timezone, and basic "how you want to play your character" information would be a good place to start.

Weird Time Zones, yes

If it doesn't require any serious knowledge of D&D mechanics, I can certainly help people with not god modding and keeping characters seperate and that sort of normal, polite communication between people thing.

I don't DM D&D though so apart from the most basic PHB type questions, I don't have a lot of knowledge.

Incidentally, I like the concept. I hope it works out and people use it

So...what exactly do mentors do?

This mentorship program is for those that want to learn the ropes of an RP style game, as well as lead some driving storylines themselves. There are a lot of peticulars to role playing effectively, and having a Mentor will help newbs get better aquainted in the town.

Quick version: we tell you how to not piss people off... ;D

Nah, just kidding. We love our cuddly 7-foot tall bloody scythe-wielding silver skinned mayor, even if he can't spell. It's just a minor issue compared to things like stupidity, of which there's plenty in the world to go around, although I have not been gifted with such.

Atreyu the Masked LLama

I'll happy help out someone if they so desire. It may be the ego talking, but I think I can help write a good villian. Someone beyond "I'm evil because I say I am," and more along the lines of "I'm evil because I specifically targeted the 13 year old kit whenever I attacked." sort of thing.
Also, I can give good advice on entering the Town. A "how not to be be ignored" guide.

Llama, the Godruped storyline proves you can write a good villain.

AmberVael

The villains in this town need better motivations. Seriously, some are just like "I'm taking over town, cause I feel like it!" Even if that is your goal, you need something more behind it.
Heck, what really ticks me off is that people think villains have to be evil. You can have good and neutral villains too. Good villains are hard to create sometimes, but just take a look at that paladin in the Goblin webcomics.
As for neutral villains, well, I hope I am doing a good job at that with the Master. He has done some evil things, but he isn't exactly evil himself. He is simply attempting to uphold his Laws. Most people don't like his arrogant and crazy methods of doing things though.

If you want a fine example of a semi-villain one can really admire, look not further than my hero Trog. The guy's a morally-challenged scumbag, but he's utterly charming and compelling as well. I dream of the day I can create a character as deep and challenging as Trog.

I had me a idear:

I'm thinking I'd like to write up a guide for the Mentorship program, so we can make sure all our recruits are getting roughly the same information. While we do have the Welcome to the Town (http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=town;action=display;num=1154409815) thread, I'd like to create something a bit, ah...easier to read, and with some links to real-game examples.

Some topics, off the top of my head:

-Character Creation
-Roleplaying
-Godmodding
-Conflicts and Combat
-Death and Resurrection
-Town Commerce
-[Events]
-The Role of the Town Council

So here's the deal: I want input on this. I'd like to know if there are topics I'm missing, but what I reallu really really[/u] want are what you think are some good examples, that I could link to. Did you see a really good fight, or some awesome roleplaying? Maybe a chance to godmod that someone [i]didn't take? A cool way of dealing with the afterlife?

Whatever they are, PM me the links and I'll take a look. Don't post links here, that's now what this thread is for and it'll just get cluttered.

Again,

PM me the links.

Thanks in advance for everybody's input. With any luck I should be able to get this started next week.

Edited for clarity of thought.

But that does sound good El Jasepero, we could have a standard sheet for everyoe to have.

Also Ascobol, you will have no trouble finding a mentor, there is many willing people out there, basically you can pick one of those who said they wish to be a mentor themselves.

Ack, are we turning the Town into a rule-based game where you have to ask the Council to go through with every action?? Or did I misunderstand something (likely)?

I really like the freeform RP we have going on now, even if we have to OOC chat here and there to stop (usually unintentional) godmodders.

Hey,

I would love to take part in The Town; however, after reading all of the introductions to The Town I feel that I don't know where to begin or how to make a character that will stand out. I would like to have a mentor that can answer some questions and even help me create a character (I have ideas so maybe a mentor could help me fix them up a bit heh.)

Anyways I'm looking to create a silly little character. Nothing to big for a first character, but has enough rping value.

Besides that I'm open to anything! I'm in Eastern Time if that makes any difference. I also hope I can contribute to The Town!

Ack, are we turning the Town into a rule-based game where you have to ask the Council to go through with every action?? Or did I misunderstand something (likely)?

I really like the freeform RP we have going on now, even if we have to OOC chat here and there to stop (usually unintentional) godmodders.

No, we are keeping it free form, but this mentor ship program will help introduce new comers into the town enviroment.

And, sorry for not posting for a while, I have thought that maybe the format of this page should be changed, to be like the avatar requests. I am going to leave the list of mentors, but remove those looking for one. I think that if you want a mentor, post here, and let some one pick you up. I would also like to change it to where the council doesnt have to aprove mentors, they just have to be titans. (even that is optional, it is to the descretion of the mentoree...) Let me know what you think...

I'm willing to mentor anyone. Especially if you want to learn how to:

a) RP
b) Be funny
c) Have your character be a jerk,
d) all of the above
e) all of the below
f) use lists with way too many letters in them
g) I just wanted to put in a G because I've always wanted to do that. It's my life-long dream. Now that it's been accomplished, I'll need to do another one. Hmm.

Anyway, then I'm your man. Cat. God. Thing.

Real life rules don't apply unless you want them too, drink 100 beers, stay awake for 48 hours straight, but remember it is vaguely rooted within reality.

And most importantly of all, have fun with it.

No. Actually, you pick two possible mentors. The two 'chosen ones' enter an arena (during a thunderstorm) that I like to call the MENTORDOME. They then engange in an ancient ritual of mortal combat. They duke it out until one of them wins, and then that one will have the privelege of being your mentor.

Short version? Yeah, just pick one.

Mortia De Luna Draco

Mentor list: not a problem.

As for the removal of the Titan thing, that is just a person opinion of mine, and it has been discussed before. Please, don't be offended, but I feel that personal who are a titan have a little more experience to give out than other, as far as Roll playing is concerned. I modified it to say that it is only a recommendation, and no one need follow it. As I have stated repeatedly that it is only my opinion, it stays. I have made no (nor have the power to make) any requirements regarding titans running things.

Please, if this is to start a discussion, put it in the town hall, not here. I will be more than happy to discuss my reasons to anyone who wants to know them there.

Trouble is, Gaheris as a character doesn't tend to trust the Watch no matter where he goes. He spent half his lifetime watching them arrest him and others who turned to petty crime for survival while letting big criminals with money for bribes or muscle for threats literally get away with murder. He's highly unlikely to just sign up with the police.

Here in the town stats matter very little (unless you are in the arena, in which case I, as the judge, get very picky). Many characters are very unset in ability, and some use abilities that don't even exist. As long as you have an idea of you can and cannot do, you should be fine.
That being said, if you want to make a entirely set 3.5 character for the town, get in contact with me. AIM would be preferable, but email works as well.

Freeform RP. Basicly you create a character and describe what they do. The only thing you don't decide is what happens to any PC you attack, help, talk to or otherwise interact with.

(wonders if this is the best place to enter the town for the first time)
A pair of Thri-Kreen one black and one dusty yellow appear in the distance over a hill. Both have shortshords of differing colours in sheathes on their belts and back and both have coloured runes all across their bodies.
Also strapped to them are various adventuring tools like rope, pitons and strange metatic devices.
The Thri-Kreen remain un-armoured but they do adorn various magical items. Strangly, the lighter coloured one has a teddy bear tucked in its belt.
The dark one looks over at the light one and begins to speak in a strange gutteral language.
"This be where we find him?" It asks as it picks a piece of grit from its Chiten.
"I think so. But we shall see," The light one replies.
The both walk into the town.
Is this an ok entrance?
I'm compensating for the fact that I might start a "storyline" at some point.

One more question, What is an appropriate character level.
Lvl 20 would usually be the limit but in this game, what is the regular?

Flabbicus
2006-11-01, 07:14 AM
There is no regular per-se. But somewhere between 15-25 is appropriate.

2006-11-01, 11:25 AM
Yes, I think the general level is more towards 25 than 15, although you don't need a single level or even a rules compatible character.

If you have a concept that you can play then it can come into town. All welcome, the more the merrier

Thri-Kreen_DK

I think then I'll settle for lvl 25, allowing my characters to be at the higher end of the scale.
Besides, I get access to the perfect multi-weapon fighting feat =).

Hi, I'm new to D&D RPing but I've been RPing since before I can remember, but never D&D >_<

Yeah basically I need help in creating a character and other junk and stuff...

Destro_Yersul

Best thing to start is come up with a concept. Then flesh out the characters back story, and find a way fro them to arrive in town. If you've already RP'd, then we don't need to go over that. Biggest rule here is have fun. Second biggest is "No godmodding", but that's covered alsewhere. Oh, and welcome to the town.

Welcome!! Are you looking for a mentor, or just some start out help?

If you could please include what time zone you in, and what style of RPing you enjoy, we will see if we can find you the right person.

Well I formerly RP'd on Nationstates but got tired of the inconcistencies and continuity errors, so really i'm looking for something a little more rigid, I'm not great at huge posts, but i'm worse at short posts.

I'm in GMT and i'm not sure if I need a mentor, I mean it would be helpful to have one so it'd be a little easier to get into RPing and understanding what can and can't be done....

The Town isn't really very rigid. The rules are simple, don't control other's characters without permission and have fun. The suggested rules of play are in the stickied threads. The Town is freeform, stats aren't necessary for your character. The best place to start is in Trog's Tavern, engage someone else in conversation and go from there. The most active time for the Tavern is 5pm-11pm EST (which is -5 from GMT). It can be hard to get started so just be persistant. There are other players from the GMT timezone that you can talk to and get to know. Several possibilities are the Librarian, Ilev and Clover. Otherwise my character Gwen is in the Tavern now.

I have some questions now...

What's &quot?

Is there a limit on the amount of PC characters you can field? If so then what is it?

Is there any special mega complex ruleset on combat?

And lastly, is it recomended to post your character description in the Characters of the Town thread?

&quot is a glitch from the forum move. It used to be " but got changed somehow.

I don't think it was set, but 6 seems to be the max if you don't want to go crazy with keeping track of them...

No, you can use D&D rules if the other fighter agrees, or specific rules relating for the certain fight. Most people use free form.

Well... if you want to make a really long post regarding your character and elaborate on him/her then yes it is good. But its being overhauled right now and most people don't check it for updates.

Heya all,

I need some directions... I have some ideas for the character and post it to the characters thread soon. Also I pm'ed Ceika if she would be so kind to create me an avatar :-) But:

Where are you supposed to start? Or in other words: Is there a place where popping in for the first time is recommendable? I am not neither new to DND, nor to freeform, but I just have no clue which place to go first.

(( I am not requesting a mentor right now, I just need a "Go there first" from someone ;-) ))

The best place to appear is usually in Trog's Tavern. Go in, order a drink from the NPC Cosmo and start a conversation with someone.

Inari's Temple can also be a good starting point, as long as its not under attack, but the same warning can apply to Trog's.

Well, you are supposed to post in the streets thread when moving between buildings.
As for the edge of town, that would also be the streets thread.

I suppose that depends on how informed you want to be. You could either read a few thousand pages of posts, or just dive in and catch up as you go. Me, I'd choose the latter. :smalltongue:

Well, it would be best to wait until there is more activity in the Town. Tonight is pretty dead. Wait until there are a few people at Trog's and go talk to them. That's one way.

El Jaspero, the Pirate King

Trog's is certainly the easiest jumping-off point, though any of the other public areas that have fairly heavy traffic are good too. Hookah Hank's was quite the spot for a while, too.

*Raises hand* I'd just like to state that you'd definitely be on a lot more people's 'good' list if you didn't shorten words and used punctuation.

Just a suggestion, not trying to be mean. I don't really want to take an 'apprentice' right now, but I did want to help keep you from aggravating all of the grammar nuts here.

AmberVael

Despite the efforts of the most renowned RPGologists and D20ists, we are unfortunately unable to identify 'what its deal' is.
What little is known is that it is varied in form, extremely addictive, and is a freeform roleplaying game.
For a more complete description, see the "Welcome to Town" thread.

I've been on the boards here for a few months and now want to join the town, and have a question. Can we have pets or sidekicks? Mhy concept for a character so far is a mind flayer half-TBD (class TBD), and want a Gelatinous cube as a pet or sidekick. Or if I can find a way to pull it off, an intelligent gelatinous cube with a mind flayer sidekick.

Go ahead. Anything you want is possible here. I have several characters. One is a blatant copyright violation from the future, one is a trout obsessed lich who is more than a little crazy, and one is an anthropomorphic praying mantis who speaks really broken common. I also have a bunch of power hungry wizards who own a flying fortress. And those are just my characters! We're all about fun here, so welcome to the Town.
