Okay, so I have some plans for an epic Vote Up thing, but I want to do some lesser projects before I tackle that one, building up to the big stuff, as it were.

As such, I'm starting with something simple, a monster, for 3.5e D&D.

As for the voting rules: Only one vote per person, made in bold. Your first vote shall be counted, and I will count them as soon as I see them, so please don't edit your vote/vote before you're really sure.

Celestial is listed in the types. Does this refer to Good Outsiders, or some obscure type found in source books I don't own?

If the former, I vote Celestial. If the later, I vote Outsider.

He was making a villain, not a regular monster. He was also thoroughly against an animal-, ooze-, or vermin-based villain, whereas I had no such qualms. It's like comparing apples with powerful antagonist apples with class levels.

I vote High Voice, Low Pain Threshold. Either that or High Octane, Low Blow. Or maybe High Times, Low Calorie. Nah . . . in the end let's go with High-Brid, Low-Comotive.

Sometimes, arcane experiments go horribly, horribly wrong. What was intended to be a great new spell or magic item instead has become a monster unleashed from arcane magic.

A swarm of amorphous blobs, each of which represents a spell. Each of which IS a spell, distilled into its most dangerous form. Its form in which it has gone from energy to matter.

The first thing such a swarm tends to do is kill its own creator, and extract more magic from there.

This swarm is known as the Spellswarm.

Spell Capture

Whenever a Spellswarm's Spell Resistance prevents a spell from affecting it, the spell fails entirely. Instead, the spell is added to the Spellswarm's spellcasting repertoire.

Additionally, whenever a spellcaster with unspent spell slots is affected by the spellswarm's swarm attack, one of his highest still available spell slots is likewise captured. Which spell it is is chosen from the available spell slots randomly.

In the case of a spontaneous spellcaster (like a sorcerer), only a spell slot is lost, and the spell is chosen randomly from spells known of that level.

In the case of a prepared caster (like a wizard), both the spell slot and the spell prepared in it are lost, and the spell is chosen randomly from the prepared spells of that level.

Lost spell slots are regained whenever the spellcaster would normally regain spell slots.

Whenever a spellswarm captures a spell, no matter how, it recovers a number of hit points equal to the spell's level squared. These hit points can't exceed the spellswarm's maximum hit points.

Spellcasting

A spellswarm can cast the spells it has captured, additionally, it starts out with the following spells:

Magic missile * 3
Color Spray * 3
Burning Hands * 3
Scorching Ray * 2
Web * 2
Fireball * 1

All spells are cast at Caster level 8 or the minimum caster level to cast the spell, whichever is more. Saving throw DCs are 15 + spell level

Innocous Form

By using its innate magic, a Spellswarm can pretend to be a pool of water or other liquids. This transforms it into 3750 gallons of liquid. Transforming into this pool takes a full minute, transforming out of it is a move action.

If a spellcaster enters a Spellswarm in innocous form, the Spellswarm can choose to capture spells as though it was using its swarm attack.

While in innocous form, a spellswarm cannot move or perform any actions but transform back out of its innocous form.

Interesting creature though.

.... Where's it's shape changer abilities? A pool of water? There's like 3 oozes that do that already, without the shapechanger subtype. :smallconfused:

I'm not familiar with any which explicitly transform into a pool of liquid.

Some of the ones in MM can pretend to be them, and one in monsters of Faerun hides as a pool of water.

Which ones in the MM? I'm pretty sure there aren't any.

And Faerun is not something I'm familiar with.

I'm away from my books, but if you ask people in the IRC, they can tell you. A lot of oozes can appear as certain liquids.

A pretty cool monster, InaVegt. This contest went fairly well, from what I saw. I hope that you enjoyed it, & I'm glad that someone out there appreciates firsthand how difficult these contests can be firsthand. I remember when I had to do an incorporeal ooze swarm... :smallsigh:

Will you be doing another such contest? I'd be interested to see how you'd handle a different set of votes. I was planning to do another series of VUAMs after my current project is truly complete, but I don't wanna step on anyone's toes.

You haven't included the save DC for the Distraction ability.

Standard practice is to transcribe the swarm traits relevant to the creature [weapon immunity etc].

Only thing i can remember that can look like water in the MM is a Phasm, though this has a unique ability. For a true feeling of shapechange, it might be worth tacking on the ability to congeal into one blob...

Yeah, it doesn't really count as a 'shapechanger'. Also, you forgot DCs and whether its abilities are (Ex), (Su), or (Sp). Can it suck psionics too?

Other than that, it's epic.

Can it suck psionics too?

I think that depends on the DM's transparency rules.

Personally, I'm more interested in how it reacts with Incarnum.
