STAR WARS

THE RISING SHADOW

There is unrest in the Galactic
Senate. Several thousand solar
systems have, without warning
declared their intentions to
leave the Republic.

This separatist movement,
whose leadership is unknown, has
made it difficult for the limited
number of Jedi Knights to maintain
peace and order in the galaxy.
Border conflicts and petty wars
spring up like wildfire.

Senator Amidala, the former
Queen of Naboo, is returning
to the Galactic Senate to vote
on the critical issue of creating
an ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC
to assist the overwhelmed
Jedi.

And far above the planet of
Corsucant, and ancient starship
appears from hyperspace...

Coruscant, high orbit, 1300 hours Galactic Standard Time

With a sudden jolt and a violent shaking, Revan's small starship dropped back into realspace. The Jedi cursed as he saw that he was in a gravity well, and a massive planet glittering with the lights of a completely urban surface loomed in the viewing port of the cockpit. Revan's ship was a small freighter of the Dynamic class, same type as his old Ebon Hawk, if a touch slower and less modified. The Jedi shook his head as he pulled back on the controls, activating the braking-thrusters and slowing the spacecraft. He felt dizzy, ill almost, and curiously distended, like his body had just been stretched and then snapped back to its original size. What had happened to him? Where was he? And then Revan remembered: Way out in the Unknown Regions, he had been pulled in by a black hole... pulled in past the event horizon. All had been darkness and pain for the longest time, until now. He had been thrown back into space.

"Thank the Force," Revan murmured as he shook his head again to dispel the dizziness. A hailing notice blared and Revan flicked a switch to take it. A pale holographic head of a man with some kind of uniform on appeared on the console of the ship.

"Unidentified starship, this is Coruscant Ground Control, please identify yourself," the head said. At that moment, Revan realized two things: Firstly, he was back in the Galaxy that he knew. Second, he hadn't given his little ship a name.

"This is the, uh, Intrepid, Dynamic class, registration number 4741209," Revan replied, giving the name as the first word to come to his mind. There was a long pause before the holographic head reappeared again, with a half-confused, half-amused expression.

"Pretty old junker you've got there, sir, but you are cleared for landing. Proceed to the coordinates we have sent," The man said, and then his hologram disappeared. Briefly flicking his eyes to the screen of the ship's navicomputer, he set it on autopilot and leaned back in his seat, rubbing his eyes wearily, while the ion engines activated and the newly christened Intrepid began its descent.

Meanwhile, inside a bar planetside....

"Hey!"
Skaven continued sipping his drink, assuming the ruffian two seats down was talking to someone else.
"Hey, you!"
Skaven finally turned his head.
"Want to buy some deathsticks?"
Actually, I'd love to.

As the newly named ship descents...

A mechanic dressed in dull practical clothes looks up through his protection goggles at the old ship and stands up with a bolt.

"Woah! A Dynamic class! I gotta see that"

With this the young Togruta runs off the deserted platform of the governor's ship and down to an old pathway to the one that would soon belong to the mysterious starship, ignoring the long fall below.
This would all seem very reasonable had there not been a much closer and much safer way that he could have taken, but Qait Tee had no time for common sense when a new starship was in town.

"Amazing! And the ion engines are still running, it must have a good master"

He say, to nobody in particular as he watches the ship land, perhaps standing a bit too close for most people's comfort but ultimately out of danger.

A dark clothed woman walks through the halls of the Jedi Temple, passing by others like she was the only person there. The hint of a smug smile could be seen on her face and her stride betrayed self-confidence. She had just been given a position within the Jedi order and couldn't believe how easy it had been. Of course, she had to thank her master for that. He had managed to pull strings and through others had gotten members of the Jedi council to believe Maya's story and accepted her into the Jedi order, without them realizing it was him pulling the strings.

Now... let's see where I can find my quarters. Maya thought with a grin.

An alien can be seen looking out into the Coruscant sky from a balcony in the Jedi Temple. Nobody was ever able to figure which alien species the small orange reptilian humanoid. It kind of bothered him, because it made it hard to blend in if you are the only one of your kind in the civilized galaxy. He speaks Common and understands every language he has ever encountered, so communication is never an issue.

Anyone with any sense in the force can sense a hint of the dark side in Pikk. It always makes him nervous to be in the Jedi Temple, but he is all the time because he wants his former master, whom he knows is keeping tabs on him, to know that he is not a threat to anyone.

This is a different situation though. The small reptile's tail slides across the ground nervously for its master has sensed a disturbance in the force. Looking through a disembodied scope, he watches intently at the obsolete quasi-freighter making its way to Coruscant's surface.

The grey jedi lets out a comment. Interesting.

[Minutes Earlier]

Above the skies of Coruscant an aging transport, too unimportant to be given a name, even by the Captain himself, prepared to land. It had been preparing to land. Transports such as these were not high on the priority list, and sometimes it could be as long as a week before they were granted clearance to land in one of Coruscant's perpetually overcrowded space ports. The few dozen on board were the lowest of the low. Aliens and refugees of every description, from such far flung planets and out of the way star systems that in fact it was the brown skinned human woman who looked out of place, wrapped in a thick green cloak to keep out the cold. It had been far too long since she had been in any sort of climate controlled environment, and the thermogenerators were set to very, very low.
Aside from her species, there was very little to indicate that Kalya Shaanti did not belong with the assorted dregs of the galaxy that sat with her in the transport, waiting to land into a 'better' life. Certainly, her clothes were as plain, if not plainer, than their's, and the dirt and grime in the lines of her face and hands, coupled with the streaks of white running intermittently through her hair gave her the impression of a young woman grown old before her time (when in fact, the opposite was true). Few would be able to tell that this woman, blending in so perfectly with the gathered refuse of the population of a million worlds, was in fact a Jedi Master, finally returning home after more than a decade in exile.
The time display over the boarding ramp exit to the front shifted. 1300, it said. And with the number came a rippling through the Force, though of course only one of the passengers' number was capable of feeling it. And if that one woman pulled the hood of her cloak over her head, no one paid it any notice. She was probably just settling down to sleep. They had been in Coruscant's congested spacelanes for many hours, and in all likelyhood, they would remain so for many hours yet. It would take a Jedi to change that.

A man in brown robes, hood pulled low over his facial features, sat down beside you. From within the folds of his robe, he produced a stack of bills, Republic credits. He slid the stack across the bar top to sit directly in your view. It is not clear how many credits are in the stack, but they appear to all be 100-credit bills.

"There's more where that came from" the man said "My employer has need of a man with your unique abilities"

You find your quarters in the East Wing of the Temple. However, outside of your door, you see two Jedi, most likely Knights, talking to each other quietly and discreetly. You don't need to be able to read minds to tell that you are the topic of their conversation.

It takes an additional 15 minutes for your transport to touch ground at the starport. Of course, it will take another hour to get through Customs. You feel another ripple in the Force, stronger and closer than the last. You feel the need to get through Customs faster, but the line is unmoving, and the officer at the front seems to be taking his sweet time in checking everyone's papers. How to get through?

Pikk

"You felt it too?" said a voice behind you. Someone had apparently heard you talking to yourself. You look behind you to see Master Ki-Adi-Mundi is standing behind you, a distant look on his face, all his concentration focused on the skies above.

Qait Tee & Revan

Revan descended the opening ramp of the Intrepid, while the ship hissed and steamed all around him, venting the used atmosphere of the ship's interior and replacing it with the comparatively fresh air of Coruscant. Revan was garbed in his brown Jedi tunic with loose, light brown trousers, and tall leather boots, which his pants were tucked into. Immediately, he spotted a young Togruta in plain mechanic's clothes standing closer to the Intrepid than anyone should have been during the landing cycle.

"You are either very brave or very foolish to stand so close to a landing starship" Revan said to the Togruta jokingly, with a smile.

Maya kept moving until she reached the door to her chambers and the Knights. She stopped in front of them with a calm smile on her face. It was to be expected that people would talk about her. It wasn't every day that a Jedi was dug up from the middle of nowhere in space and then excepted into the Order without much fuss. She had a lot of 'sucking up' to do, to put it nicely.

"Good afternoon." She said in a friendly and polite manner. "May I help you?"

The Togrutan mechanic turns his head to look smilingly at the Jedi

"Why should I stand further away? I might never get a chance to see a Dynamic class land again"

He ducks down to inspect the ship from a lower angle

"Impressive, how does it still function after all these years?"

-He thinks out loud, apparently forgetting that the owner of the ship is right there.

It is one thing, it is another thing for it to attract the attention of a Jedi Master, and a Councilor to boot! Pikk is following the force adept. He feels like he's something so alien yet familiar at the exact same time. Is Master Mundi looking at a completely different disturbance?

His emotions and thoughts are easy to sense. Though this may or may not be intentional.

Kalya is a patient person. Of course, she also has little respect for Republic incompetence in times of strife, and is very good at avoiding notice. She simply walks past the line and the gate, becoming as insignificant as a fly, at least to the inattentive. It's possible that an unusually sharp-eyed, alert or assiduous guard could penetrate her veil of deception, but given the location and situation, it's pretty unlikely. Certainly, the customs officer does not seem in fit mood to notice her as she goes right past.

Among the people waiting in line for Customs was a Zeltron woman. She was looking decidedly uncomfortable standing in the press of the crowd, surrounded by so many people. She could feel their impatience, sense their annoyance, their unhappiness. It was all pushing in on her, threatening to suffocate her under a wave of negative emotions. Analla couldn't wait to get out of here. Maybe she'd hit up a bar, one of the nice ones. Or one of those clubs where the dance party never stopped.

Now, if only she could get out of this damned line...

Revan and Qait Tee

Revan smiled at the Togrutan, half amused and half confused by the boy's statements. Why, the Dynamic was one of the most reliable light freighters in the Galaxy! Sure, it might be rare, since Core Galaxy Systems decided to manufacture them one at a time, but they weren't THAT rare. And they were pretty new as well, they'd only been operating for a few years now. Reliable and easy to maintain, they were just about the perfect choice for a lone spacer like Revan, True, Intrepid was not as fast or agile or modified as Ebon Hawk, but Revan had done some touch-ups of his own on the ship's hyper and ion drives, and it was a good ship, essentially.

"I'm not entirely sure what you mean" The Jedi Knight said, with a laugh and a gentle smile.

"I bought this ship off the line at Kuat just about two months ago. Hard to get a hold of, considering Core Galaxy builds them individually, but it was a good investment. You really haven't seen a Dynamic before?" he asked, as it dawned on him how odd it was that a mechanic on Coruscant, the heart of the galaxy, hadn't seen a freighter of the Dynamic class before.

Skaven

The cloaked man casts his gaze about furtively, as if on the watch for something or someone. He then slips a small piece of paper onto the bartop in front of you. On the paper is scrawled an address for an apartment in the Lower City Slums.

"We can't talk here, too many eyes, too many ears" he explains.

"Go to that address, you will meet my colleague there. He will have more information on the cargo"

Maya

The older of the two Jedi Knights regards you with eyes like chipped granite. His skin looks tough and leathery, as if he has spent two lifetimes on hot, windblown worlds like Tatooine. He certainly doesn't look like the kind of individual who would be a serene Jedi Knight. When he speaks, his voice sounds like he's been smoking a pack of deathsticks every day since he was an infant.

"Apprentice, Master Windu wishes to question you. He requests your presence in his offices as soon as possible" the old man says.

Pikk

Master Mundi's face was dreamlike, almost as if he wasn't quite aware of where he was or what he was doing. His eyes focused and unfocused as he stared in the direction of the starport. He seemed to regain control of himself, and puts a hand to his brow, as if feeling an immense headache.

"I must ask a favour of you" Master Mundi said.

"I have matters I must attend to here at the Temple. Could you go to the starport and seek out this Force presence. It feels old, very old, but unfamiliar. I have never felt any like it. Would you do that, and bring back whomever or whatever it is?" he asks.

Kayla Shaanti

The ripples in the Force have become a steady throb as you stand on the exterior balcony of the starport, while a line of repulsorlift taxis in their famous yellow Coruscant livery waited for exiting travellers from the port. You feel that it is coming from the west of your position, from one of the civilian landing bays, rather than the larger commercial landings, from which you just left. Whomever or whatever it is, it certainly isn't being careful about its extremely noticeable Force presence.

Analla Keltar

You wait. The line shuffles ahead a few more paces, and then you wait. The bored looking customs officer at the front stamps a few passports, and then you wait. The waiting seems to go on forever and ever. This is, by far, the worst part about interplanetary travel: Customs. Each world was different, but each one was inconvenient in its own way.

At last, after much waiting, your passport is stamped and you are freed into the main terminal. Free at last! Free at last! Thank the Force Almighty, free at last! Ahead of you, the autodoors slide open, and you see a line of waiting repulsorlift taxis, painted bright yellow and black, as all Coruscant public transit was.

This time it was the Togrutan's time to be confused

"But-how?-Two months-what?!"

Shaking his head to regain his senses he gains a little bit of coherence

"Am I still in Year 13*?"

The time should be unknown to Revan but the fact that an entirely new calender exist might lighten him to the amount of time he had been gone.

*Following the Great ReSynchronization-based calender, it's equivalent to 22 BBY which is the year of the second prequel. Only problem is that it means Before the Battle of Yavin and is not official in universe before 25 ABY so Qait is going by the old calender

Pikk hears the Master speak the first sentence, disengaging from his observations and turning to the Master to better hear his request. It was no secret that he didn't trust the Jedi 100%, but it would be an opportunity to explore this unusual presence in the force. It will be done. Not like he had anything better to do.

Pikk will then depart for his transport. Cayya may see the small unidentified alien walking by.

Mmm... Where too first? The landing bay, or the temple?
Kalya heads west on foot, walking towards the persisting disturbance. She moves swiftly and purposefully, and bystanders soon find themselves unconsciously moving out of her way to let her pass, stepping aside for a second, before resuming their day to day lives. She almost reaches for the all too familiar weight of her lightsaber, but stays herself immediately. There's no need for such an object currently, after all. Still, it is useful for one to know where one's own tools were. Pickpockets were becoming more bold by the day.

Qait Tee & Revan

Revan furrowed his eyebrows, extreme confusion now plain on his features. Year 13? Year 13 of what? Scratching the back of his head, Revan cast a look around the urban skyline of Galactic City, the vast metropolis which covered Coruscant entirely. The skyscrapers and other towers and apartment blocks looked a little unfamiliar. Their architectural style was different, even the repulsorcars seemed different in design. Something was different, but he wasn't sure what.

"Year 13? I'm not sure I follow you? Isn't it the 21,094th year of the Republic?" Revan said, a strange feeling of anxiety creeping up from the pit of his stomach.

Pikk

As your transport comes to circle the starport, you spot an unusual site. A Dynamic class light freighter, practically an artifact, but looking as new as if it had been built just this year. The Force presence, exuding waves of power in an almost careless manner, was centered on the landing bay with the Dynamic parked in it.

Analla

The Toydarian taxi driver grins, or at least makes an alien approximation of a grin, and speeds off. It is clear that he is a typical Coruscant cab driver: Alien, odd-smelling, and with a poor grasp of Galactic Basic.

"'Ey, how are you today? Where you wanna go, eh?" the Toydarian remarks, and as he weaves in and out of air traffic at a suicidal speed, you can tell that it would be appropriate add "bad driver" to the characteristics of a Coruscant taxi driver. The Toydarian looks in every direction except in his lane, cuts off far larger vehicles, swivels in his seat to talk to you, and generally does everything EXCEPT keep his eyes on the sky.

Kalya

Coming to the landing bay, you spot a Togrutan mechanic, speaking with a man in Jedi robes. Or at least, the Jedi robes that you used to see people wearing in the illustrations in history textbooks. You didn't think anyone dressed like that anymore. Given the fact that this 'Jedi' was standing next to a flying antique like a Dynamic, you guessed he must be some kind of reenactor or historical enthusiast. Who could the Force presence be from though? This close, it was difficult to tell whether it was the anachronistically-dressed man or the Togrutan.

Pikk's transport was a totalled car found in the undercity a while ago. Pikk made fixing it up a hobby. It works better than it probably ever did before, it even has a hyperdrive! Maybe not a top-of-the-line hyperdrive but it got the ship from System A to System B just fine. It's got some space, but only someone as small as Pikk could possibly fit in the driver's seat.

However, this was a suprise. A model ship like that hasn't been seen in millenia. Maybe its owner found it and fixed it up like Pikk would have done. No, those model engines are quite antique as well. Maybe it was preserved in the vaccum of space, waiting for someone to turn on the engines. Highly unlikely if not outright impossible. But the force brought it here for a reason.

Pikk circles the spaceport briefly before descending. The individuals on it may see a very short reptilian alien in grey jedi robes walking towards the Togrutan and the oddly dressed human. Force adepts can sense his presence fairly easily.

Realising that the Jedi believed himself to be thousands of years in the past he suddenly becomes much more interested

"Are you 3940 years old?! You must have seen everything! Did you really have T3 droids back then? "

A man was sitting outside the Landing Bay. The man seemed... different from most. He exuded the sense of a Jedi, but at the same time, merged with the background. For those who were Force-Sensitive, it was even worse. There was a reason that the Force-Sensitive glared at him. The natural balance of the Force was maintained in him. Dark and Light, each in equal measure. For those inclined to believe, this was an abomination. The man smiles, reflecting on old times. There was a reason the Gray Jedi are resented. Those of the Gray were more inclined to ignore the Light, and when Light ruled the Gray remained steadfast in their beliefs. The man had been called a Sith any number of times. He ignored it, pitying those who believed the Force to only lean towards Light. He reads the holodisk, blissfully unaware of his surroundings.

Sitting alone in a luxury suite high up in the Coruscant skyline, is a representative of the planet Naboo, the infamous Jar-Jar Binks. Most believed him to be a clumsy, naive creature who nevertheless showed great care in attempting to aid his people politically. Most people are stupid of course, and this image was far from the truth. Jar-Jar the fool was merely an act put on to lull others into a false sense of security, for under that mask lurked a cold, calculating, and ruthless creature unafraid to dirty his hands.
He was thinking of the future currently, the senate would have a meeting soon, to address the issue of the Sepratists, and he plotted what he would say to rile them up for war. His thoughts were interupted by the hologram of a trusted spy saying, "Sir, I have news that may interest you. A ship designated Intrepid has recently landed, it is a Dynamic class, and appeared with no warning whatsoever. It appears to only have a single occupant, a Jedi it seems."
Jar-Jar nods, and replies, "Indeed, you have piqued my interest, keep an eye on this suppossed Jedi, see what he does and where he goes, and report back if there is any suspicious activity."
The spy nods and bows, and the hologram fades to nothing. With that he will continue to plot out his speech, but resolves to inform his benefactor about the suppossed Jedi.
