Leslie Nielsen, the actor best known for starring in such comedies as Airplane! and the Naked Gun film franchise, died Sunday of complications from pneumonia at a hospital near his home in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. He was 84.

“We are sadden by the passing of beloved actor Leslie Nielsen, probably best remembered as Lt. Frank Drebin in The Naked Gun series of pictures, but who enjoyed a more than 60-year career in motion pictures and television," said a statement from Nielsen's family released through his rep.

Surely, you can't be serious. :(

Damn, his movies are about the only ones I grew up with that can still get a laugh out of me...

Surely, you can't be serious. :(

Sadly, I am.

And don't call me Shirley.

Same here. I actually sat down and watched Airplane! last week when it was on AMC. Introduced some younger family members to it. At least his legacy will carry on.

...dammit. Just... dammit. Leslie was a great comedian who brought light and laughs to many lives. He'll be missed, that's for damn certain.

Dracula: Dead and Loving It for me. It's hard to beat a Nielsen/Brooks combo.

This is truly sad, but at 84, I'd say that he had a good run. I think that we should be happy that he gave us so much to smile about, & not mourn his passing. He lived his way, & we should all be so lucky. He was a great comedic actor (& a damn good serious actor, as should not be forgotten), so we should honor his memory with a laugh.

"Sad news? What is it?"

"It's information on current events that leaves one feeling less joyful than they were before they heard it, but that's not important right now."

Awww. Sorry to hear that. As someone else just said, at 84 he had a pretty good run.
Silly, silly man.

Sad face...

My mom saw it on a news ticker thing. Here's what the announcement said:

"Leslie Nielsen died of pneumonia in the hospital (the building with all the patients)."

Even in his death, he lines are quoted.

A sad day indeed. He was great and by far my favorite.
But 84 years is a good run, indeed.
RIP Leslie. You brought many laughs to me and my friends.

Sad news, Leslie Nielson's movies were always particular favorites in my household growing up. Even when my dad was succumbing to cancer he'd still quote lines from Naked Gun and others to make us laugh. He actually would request a bump in his pain medication by quoting Nordberg (Heroin, Frank... Heroin).

We'll have to watch the movies again this week to honor the memory of a really gunny guy.

Surely you jest? Will you all stop calling him Shirley?

Man, this has been a terrible year for comedians. I did not see very much of his work (mostly just Airplane!), but what I have seen has made me laugh very hard indeed.

That is sad news. :smallfrown:

Every time I watch the Airplane! and Naked Gun movies I discover something funny that didn't occure to me before. I bet Leslie still has some aces up his sleeve. :smallwink:

Why hasn't anyone found a cure for death yet? There's a lot of folks who need to be cured.

The odd thing is he was selected for that role because he was a ordinary character actor, doing the absurd lines dead seriously. He became known for being funny because he wasn't.
The jest was surely that was it was not meant to be, at least by the actor.

Gleaned this from a classmate's computer screen at the library today. We both were like "huh, that's a damn shame" to some degree.

No more Fully Undressed Firearms. :(

I salute you Leslie Nielsen, and laugh at you at once. May it accompany you with all the other ones you've evokes.

He will be missed. I'll probably be one of the few looking to watch Forbidden Planet in tribute to him.

Damn, one of the few truly brilliant comedic actors. RIP, he will be missed.

This really brings home how old some of my favorite actors are. When Patrick Stewart or Sean Connery kick it, I'm probably going to sit in a corner and cry for a while. :smallfrown:

I heard about this Monday morning on the news. Sad, sad day. :smallfrown:

You know what else is terrible about this? One of the greatest comic actors is dead at 84... while Christopher Lee, my favorite serious actor, is 88. :smalleek:
