View Full Version : Mechanically, what's the most fun class you've ever played?

Title says it all. A new campaign's starting in a week, and I'm trying to figure out what I want to play.

A sorcerer specialised in battlefield control, and especially gaseous/breath themed weapons was pretty fun. My concept of him was an infernal-themed circus performer with a mask... having a cool concept and some diversity but mostly within the same general theme of spells that in some way could appear to be his breath meant there was both consistency and options.

Factotums seem to be pretty fun, too. Can do just about anything with them, including make stuff up on the fly.

Unarmed Swordsage/Teflammar Shadowlord. Shadowpouncing with maneuvers is so awesome.

Also Paladin of Mystra (Sword of the Arcane Order) with Battle Blessing. Was pretty cool. Although that may have just been the campaign, which was awesome, and I was practically the main character.

Although that Fey Bloodline Sorcerer was really cool too... I love dominating people. (Not that way you dirty-minded people)

If you have access to the book "Charge!", there's a PrC focussed on breaking things with a zweihander. I believe the class was Doppelsöldner, although they may have called it Landsknecht.

I don't usualy enjoy playing pure melee, but that was pretty darn fun.

Beyond that, my favorite would have to be a Cleric. Decent combat, and some fun spells to back up the party.

this was a campaign with plenty of house-rules, mentioning; ignore LA, 3 bonus feats at level 1... it was great fun and still is...

half-ogre TWF tripper, combat reflexes, and high AC.

ranger 6, swordsage 4, blood claw master 2. from here we changed to Birthright campaign setting - playing as leaders of countries - and I continued in swordsage for skillpoints. But that was great fun, and even (at least I think) doable without the houserules.

this character was retrained from a Tempest(CAd, I know:smalleek:)... the swordsage made it really fun. And I must try me some more swordsage or warblade next time I play 3.5. Or my GM allows 3.5 in our Pathfinder campaigns.

As you don't specify game, I'll include the following:

AD&D: rogue (so versatile without magic aids! you can leave your footprint in almost every situation)

D&D 3rd ed: warlock (all that cool powers that can't be used up, I really love this class due to the coolness of the invocations, no matter if they are not powerful enough or versatile enough. I particulary love the one allowing you to remove your eye, grow it spider legs and using it for spying)

D&D 4th ed: I particulary don't like this edition because there are too many "special effects", and the benevolent healing rules (you go from almost dead state to completely refreshed just taking a nap) reminds me of a videogame. However, playing a warlord wasn't bad at all.

Other RPGs:

I just discovered the Dragon Age (paper & pencil RPG). I thought it was lame, but now I've played, I just say: it's soooo enjoyable! Quick, simple, fast, efficient, fun. I don't want to stop playing!

OD&D: A Magic-User. Love the one spell a day at level 1 and then you can fight just like anyone else. :smallamused:

AD&D: The monstrous amalgamation I played in my Dad's game as a kid. I was like a cleric/fighter/wizard thing. Totally fun, but really strange. Probably had almost nothing to do with the rules.

D&D 3.5: Binder, hands down. The ability to say "eh, I'm bored with this, let's be someone else today!" is too enjoyable to pass up.

D&D 4: N/A. I didn't like anything I tried.

It wasn't one class so much as the combination thereof that made this awesome, but I adored my Binder/Incarnate (who eventually went Chameleon). You think Binders and Incarnates can play a totally different role every day? You have no idea what they can do together. (It didn't hurt that the party didn't know what my actual class was, either. Great times.)

Factotum prestiged into Chameleon. There's something I just really love about the Chameleon class - the Factotum gets to do a tiny amount of everything all at once; really it's just a skillmonkey who gets a couple spells and isn't bad in melee. Chameleons on the other hand are less generalists and more like morphic specialists - they can actually choose a different role every day and fulfil it fairly successfully. It's really like you're playing a different class every time you decide to change roles, which is great if you're like me and keep changing your mind about what you want to play before your current character is even dead. I liked playing it so much that I homebrewed a base class version so that you don't have to wait until 6th level to actually start playing the character concept you wanted to.

Binder without question. Built in roleplaying potential when you fail pacts, recharging abilities so you don't wind up saying "Sorry, out of spell slots, we're done for the day", being able to change your ability list every day...

You've obviously never met a berzerker go goes into an infectious rage, inspiring others in the party to be more aggressive. Or a keen tactician, who barks orders to the other fighters in the group, setting up brutal strikes. Or the Dragon-blooded bard who simply roars, and everyone's weapons are imbued with draconic fire. Or the heavy metal guitar soloist, who inspires his party members by rocking with an awesome riff. Bard are freaking badass.

Rogueish mulitclass characters that add a lot of miscellaneous bonuses to hit and damage. Rogue/Swashbuckler/Swordsage/Factotum. Wizards are fun too but the sheer joy of picking up a new damage die from a class or a manoeuvre is better in the low levels at least.

For one-shots, any kind of a beaststick, playing the BSF after a stressing weeks is great, those days I just turn my brain of.

Normally? ToB or any casting class, I love the tactical aspect of the game, and those classes give me the best toys to do just that.

Dragons are always fun too. Add a few levels in a synergistic class, but mostly play the monster.

Bard.

I have a character who is a raptoran bard fluffed as a harpy obsessed with magical trinkets. There's something strangely fun about having sharply limited spells/day - unlike wizards or sorcerers where one rarely runs out of spells, it actually feels like a special resource to be used wisely. Add music, lots of skill points/skill trick, UMD and medium BAB, and there's a class which rewards creativity, restraint and teamwork, but always has something to do.

I think I'd enjoy psychic warrior, White Raven martial adepts and a party-buffing archivist for similar reasons.

3.5e: ToB classes, followed by warlock. (I've yet to try a factotum, or a Binder, or an Essentia user, but they look fun.)

4e: Warlords = fun.

Other games: I liked my blaster mage character in M&M a lot.

Warlock: sure not the most powerful class, but not exactly weak either. Plus nowhere near the bookkeeping as other casters.

Psion: nearly the same power level as wizard, but magic system that is a whole lot more intuitive and versatile.

I have three favorites, for different reasons

1. Dungeoncrasher - This version of the fighter is ridiculously awesome! ever play a half-ogre fighter with knockback? no? WHY THE HELL NOT?! At level 6, you can smack people around like dolls, which, if they hit a wall or other solid object, deals massive damage on top of you power attacked strike. Combine this with that tactical feat that gives you options in a bull rush and you have an unstoppable knockdown machine! sure, It's not quite the battlefield control that tripping is, but that doesn't matter when every time those orcs get close enough to hit you you hit them so hard they fly off the bridge and fall into the ravine below. So cool.

2. Wizard. playing a Tiefling Wizard is remarkably cool, especially when you go Malkonvoker. ignoring the already awesome fluff, the Infernal Bargainer feat for better planar binding spells on top of the already excellent boosts that Malkonvoker gets create a class that's even more powerful. I particularly like, at high levels, summoning up Balors to be my personal bodyguards. Golems? pah. I've got my character's great grandfather to boss around, and it's awesome. That said, nearly any kind of wizard floats my boat, as long as conjuration and transmutation aren't taken away. by that point your idea of optimization is pretty flawed to begin with.

3. Incarnate. Ah, the versatility, and the fact that you can say, "My charactert walks into the tavern. His belt is made of blue fire, he has blue tinted shades on, and a scarf that seems to be made from the souls of the dead as it waves in the wind" at level one.

I really can't decide which one I like more, when they're built correctly, but I end up playing the Dungeoncrasher more, since I can convince DMs how awesome it is without causing ungodly breakage of their mind to the point where they think factotums are overpowered. plus, many of them refuse to even try and understand incarnum. Pfah.

My favorite will always be something rogue-ish. The Rogue is just classic, but Beguiler is my favorite blend of illusion and stealth. From time to time I also like to play a Barbarian something akin to Logen Ninefingers. Less often, I like the Knight class for when I'm feeling like playing a more honorable character.

I'm gonna one-up FMArthur and say Factotum prestiged into Chameleon and Master of Masks. Master of Masks has about 4/10 caster progression, so you still get all of the casting power of the Chameleon, as well as the ability to switch your playstyle every day and use masks for on-the-fly power changing.

I love lots of classes. But the most fun I've ever had had to be with the Druid. There are just so many things you can do; and being an ally of basically every natural creature ever tends to make for really, really interesting stuff. And having the option to spontaneously convert into Summons for epic versatility. And being a spellcaster. And having Wildshape.

Really, the best thing about Druid is that they have infinite options on multiple fronts; they can literally do anything, any way they want. And I do love nothing quite as much as doing everything just the way I want it done. And making Tornadoes is one of my favorite past-times; right up there with Earthquakes and Skyscraper-sized Scorpions :smallcool:

I have to say, I am a fan of roguish characters. I really enjoy the tactical aspect of trying to get sneak attack damage in while tumbling around and trying to coerce your party into helping. And if they don't, well... you are probably faster and stealthier than half the party.

That said, I have been having lots of fun with a switch hitter Ranger with the Sword of the Arcane Order feat. Throw in Shooting Star substitution levels, and you are good. (both found in Champions of Valor). I love a ranger that can cast arcane spells. reminds me of the good old days.

Sorcerers seem to be my forte. My first couple characters were paladins, and I love me some paladin, but my sorcerers...
It may have something to do with the fact that, should I desire, an relatively tough enemy can disappear without a chance to do anything. Then, when I don't want to just kill everything, I can start throwing out my support spells. Lesser Orb of Fire, Melf's Acid Arrow, Fireball and Energy Substitution: Fire got me through to level 8, leaving a total of 8 spells known for supporting my friends.

In AD&D I think it was my Bard, because in those days, you could have a longsword and cast Magic Missile and Fireball...

In 3.x, I think it's a close toss-up between my Evil-Samurai-flavoured Psychic Warrior, my TN crazy Necromancer/Pale Master and my Naruto-reflavoured Monk/Cleric. That said, all three of those were fun characters as well as fun from a mechanical standpoint.

Shadow Pounce gives you a full-attack. Maneuvers require standard actions.

Now, back on topic: 3.5 bards are very fun and I love them. Since I played bards the most, I guess they tend to spring to mind easily, but I like anything with skills, magic and melee capacity. 4e bards are a joke; they don't do anything the 3.5 bard does and they don't even have instruments.

Eh, not much of play experience to speak of. Does homebrew counts, because right now I'm playing Swordmage and although it's still early it has quite interesting mechanic. Like incantations being attack action that can be full-attacked (so works with pouncing above, thanks for the idea :smallwink:)

I usually play casters though, so I probaly can say that arcane casters in general is fun for me to play.

They seem really weak at low levels. They get better at high?

I just played a Binder for the first time last night, and it worked out fine. I spent a feat to get martial-weapon proficiency: Greatsword and was basically a fighter with tricks. Did you know that one of the level 1 vestiges gives you an at-will activateable fire shroud that deals 1d6 fire to anyone who hits you? I was mowing through mooks one hack at a time last night, and the few that got hits in on me burned for it.

That's not even getting into the OTHER tricks that I had squirreled away. Took the feat that lets me access vestiges as if I were two levels higher... So I can use the one who grants me at-will invisibility and a watered down sneak attack capability, OR the one who gives me a temporary suit of full plate armor, shield use capability, and DR 1/piercing. I'm saving those binds for situations where we know there's a bad spot coming and our backs are to the wall.

So, yeah. At level 1 I was making the GM blink. We'll see how things go over the next few levels, but I have the feeling it'll be fine.

I really like Swordsages, to build and to play. However, I never got to use them in an actual RL game, so I can't really compare them to what I played there: as good as PbP can get, RL is better.
So, online: Swordsage, RL wizard. If I played both RL, probably still wizards, but I can't really say.

Wu Jen actually (the second worst too due to a DM being a jerk on day).
It was fun trying to be a awesome with my limitations (not being a normal Wizard).

Killing things like Hydras/Fire Giants with 1 4th level spell each (snake Darts). Even got a Pearl of Power 4 so I could recast.

Second favorite was my Binder/Warlock/Swordsage nameds Harry.

Base classes: It's a bit of a hard one here but I would have to say Psion is my favorite out of all of them. I'm a sucker for "I set you on fire... WITH MY MIIIIIIND!" That said, if it's a caster, chances are I will be quite fond of it. Not to say I don't appreciate a melee class every so often...

PrC: Ultimate Magus hands down but the Elocater takes a close second. Primarily, I just like the feeling of being able to say "I have a spell for that!" that the UM allows me to do... The Elocater is just awesome for the sheer level of inanity one can pull off if one specializes as a Nomad. It's great when the NPCs/Monsters/BBEG has absolutely no idea what you are going to do and where you are going to be next.

Yes, however when you use a swift/move action to teleport, you make you full attack and use a maneuver, + an extra stunning attack first from that monk Tactical Feat.

Well, in my case the most fun class was bard/dirgesinger. Want to be a Jack Skellington? That's the class for you, sure i optimize it a little with sublime chord and dragonsong lyrist, but that's not the case. I remember when my bard with his dance-zombies have their first performance... Good times.

Mhmmmmm....sounds like I need to try a binder.

Why??? :smalleek:

Knight of the Sacred Seal gives you MWP and Heavy Armor prof. for free! you don't even lose Binding levels! Save your feat and wait, I say.

Binder 6/KotSS 5/Binder +9 gives you 16 BAB at 20 too! Hopefully you can retrain :smalltongue:

I'd have to say Warlock.

You know what bugs me? Why does the motivator call out "4E Psions"?

Because earlier editions did not have Warlords?

Ah, I aim to go Knight of the Sacred Seal. The GM's quite reasonable, and I figure he'll let me retrain. And until then, I've got a kick-arse weapon. :D

At levels 1-2, Beguiler is my favorite. After that, wizards. I want a bunch of crazy awesome options at my fingertips. I'm able to reel it back easily enough (or get the DM to nerf Planar Binding, etc. beforehand) where everyone contributes and it still feels like I'm playing the wizard intelligently.

As DM: Hellfire Warlock/Binder, with a Wizard/Tainted Scholar close behind.
As player: Sorcerer.

A Sun Elven Bard. Never made it past level 3. Wasn't optimized. I just loved the freedom of a long life and being able to go in any civilized or semi-civilized town and not worry about money. Go to an inn, perform, make some friends, get laid. Get on your horse tomorrow and go somewhere else. The possibilities are endless. It doesn't even matter what gender you are.

Duskblade for me, you're tough and you can nova like crazy. Unfortunately the game died before I managed to get to swordsage13/warblade1/jade phoenix mage 6 (that, btw, is just a crazy awesome build)

I'd honestly hafta say the most fun I ever had as a player was with a beguiler/shadowcraft mage.

I also enjoyed playing a (Races of War) Samurai.

The most fun I ever had was with a bad*** fighter/rogue who was polite and a brutally efficient killer and enjoyed killing as a recreational activity. The party found out 3 weeks later he was evil.

Warblade. More specifically, the CG Warblade Gore Spinebreaker, professional door slayer.

We should put a running tally in the OP; Beguiler seems to be immensely popular.
Are we a bunch of sneaky nerds? :smallwink:

I have a different favorite class every time I run across a neat new mechanic or find a cool build (basically every other week or so), but I think my two all-time favorites are Beguiler and Crusader. So fun and so easy to just use out of the box.

My favorite so far has been a gnome swordsage specialized in Shadow Hand maneuvers. It was a PBP game, so I styled her maneuvers as techniques that are drilled into students as semi-hypnotic abilities triggered by strong emotional responses or memories, and the online style of the game allowed me to incorporate that fluff into each combat post.

To use an example, if I was going to use the teleport maneuver, my character would focus on her memories of the time she fell from a cathedral and nearly died, while to use one of her Tiger Claw maneuvers that involved bleed damage, she recalled the time that the party cleric was killed by dire wolves.

Awesome character, and both the great mechanics and the great fluff for swordsages made it possible. I've been dying to play a crusader or any of the ToB PrCs (especially eternal blade and JPM) ever since then.

I'm tempted to just state Beguiler straight out since it's my favorite class in the game to actually play. However, the word "mechanically" in the title leads me to suspect that's not quite what you're looking for.

So instead I suppose I'll say Binder.
