Our theme this month is...
Goodness Sake

Even in the darkest hour there is good in the world. Or, if there's not, there's goodness out of this world. Beings of benevolence are looking down, and there may be a guardian angel on your shoulder... or at least an archon with a sword.

What is it like in these upper planes and who are the celestial peeping toms dwelling within them? What if creatures of evil turned over a new leaf, and repented of their ways? Would the sexy god of war trade in his bare feet for some goody two-shoes? Let's see what you can come up with. Heaven help us!

There will be a First through Third place award for each of the following:

Goodest Avatar (anything roughly avatar size)
Goodest OotSatar (as above, but OotS based)
Best Celestial (any angellic being or creature from the upper planes)
Most Heavenly Scene (anything larger than above)
Best Rookie Entry (only applicable to those who have never entered these competitions before)
And, as always, the Best Overall award.

I'll also voice my opinion on which entry is the most kick-awesome in the form of a VT's Choice Award, which may be anything that tickles my fancy or was shamelessly tailored to my tastes (I approve of shamelessessness).

Rules

1. All entries must be posted by Dec. 31st at Noon, EST.

2. Every entry must include a bolded introduction as to what category you are trying to enter in.

3. Every entry must include an itallic introduction as to what your entry is.

For example:
Most Heavenly Scene
Argent Goes To Heaven


4. You cannot re-submit an entry previously submitted to an IA competition.

5. Do not use spoilers. It makes the judge's job that much harder, and they may do you harm.

6. Only the avatarist who created the avatar may submit it.

7. Please do not quote images. The entry/name will suffice.

It can, but keep this in mind. The judges are judging per entry, not per entrant. Many entrants have scored high... but only on individual entries.

One judge might like one of their avatars better than the other. As such, many have placed not at all, simply because while all of their entries scored well, each individual favorite was different for each judge.

I'd suggest posting only your best three or so for each category, otherwise you'll be competing against yourself.

Actually, the head is and the expression is not, and that's OotS standard. Many avatarists place the head off-center to the body and/or tilt the body diagonal for a pose to match that expression and look less weird.

Uhm, no. A condor's wings would still break pretty easily. They need to be hollow and light to allow you flight. If you give me an hour, I'll go over to our museum curator and ask him if I can break a few large bird bones :smalltongue:

Yeah, but condors weigh around 20 lbs, tops. Which would mean, even with very light bones, that an angel should weigh at least around 90 lbs.

Also, I've raised birds all my life of all sizes. The tamer ones have no problem being put on their back. Birds don't crush their wings from their own weight.

Now, granted, instead of extending from their arm area, angels would have them from the actual back. I'm still thinking they'd be as strong as arms. Then there is the fact that angelic creatures tend to be shown to be strong even for their size.

They'd just have really big wings. Considering 400 lbs. pterosaurs have been shown to fly, and they have to resist much greater forces than their own body weight.

What Tribble said - comparing wing that has to lift 18 kg with that of 68+ kg angel is still missing the right point on the scale :smalltongue:

Any wing capable of lifting someone has to be stronger than an arm capable of push-ups with that person's entire weight.

Ummm, you can crush a girl's arm by doing the same thing, easily :P

The point is, you need to spread the weight, not lie directly on that limb, which is what you want to do, anyway :smalltongue:

Sorry to say, but it seem a little messy.Have a look at the original, and then look up the mythical descriptions.

Anyway, what Tribble said - you're best making no more than 12 pictures to cover all the categories. And, of course, if this your first IA, you should add "Rookie Entry" to all of your pictures.

One nitpick, though, this fallen sword in the avatar-sized entry doesn't seem to belong to the rest of the picture - maybe remove it and zoom it a bit in? :smallconfused:

Plus, the colours remind me of Belldandy for some reason.

It's been mentioned already, actually: the goddess Amaterasu from Okami (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C5%8Ckami). In the game, she's usually in wolf form.

I decided to make (again) some experiments with shading, and it's the first time I'm happy about the results. Wings are made using Keveak's tutorial -it helped much.

And the Moon Rabbit story is pretty much as I drew it: Buddha came to the world disguised as a beggar. Fox, Monkey, Otter and Rabbit decided to do some good and gather food for him. Fox stole some milk curd, Monkey found some fruit, and Otter caught fish. Rabbit didn't know how to do anything except gather grass, which the human couldn't eat, so instead it offered its own flesh and threw itself on the beggar's fire. The beggar shed His disguise and, as the Buddha, caught Rabbit before it burnt and threw it into the moon as a reward for its selflessness.

The quote box is just a habit of mine from whenever I post images... I do it because it's the same color as the board background, and also so the image won't keep appearing every time someone quotes my post. If the judges prefer that the quote box isn't included, I'll remove it.

Working on my IA entry... it's not quite done yet, but I grabbed the main body of it, slapped a cape and Hackneyed EffectTM on and made a quick little avatar of it. I'd have waited until it's done and made an avatar of that, but the way things are going, it's a bit too wiiiiiiiide to fit in the avatar box.

It's not so much 'beings OF good' as 'being good'. Celestial stuff is preferred, but as long as the bad guys are acting in a jolly 'nice' manner I don't see there being a problem.

Out of curiosity, how you did these 'ribbons' on Ophan?

You mean the "wheels"? I did the swirly thing (basically a softer version of a star design I know), copy-pasted it, put them next to each other, rubbed out bits where they go behind one another, and then used the Paintbucket tool to put in the colour. I experimented with messing about with two same- or slightly different-sized circles, but it was a pain and didn't look very good.

Well, I must say, you're amazing at this. So much so, actually, that I wouldn't turn down a lesson from you sometime. For just recently starting this, you're a natural.

I don't post on the Iron Avatarist competition very often because I don't think I'm ready to play with the big boys after only a few months, but I expect to see you as a regular in these competitions.
